Bringing “Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka” to life

Catch a performance of “Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka” by Encore! Home School Productions and be prepared to experience a wide range of emotions, cast members said.

“This is a super funny show, but it’s also very heartfelt, which I think is a little unexpected,” said Brock Sunday, a senior who plays Grandpa Joe in the production.

“You might not think of this story as super heartfelt or meaningful, but there are a lot of parts that are emotional.”

“Willy Wonka” will be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, April 4 and 5, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim.

The musical follows Charlie Bucket’s magical journey inside Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. Audiences will meet a cast of quirky characters, including the eccentric Wonka and the energetic Oompa Loompas. As the story unfolds, it highlights the importance of kindness, honesty and humility in a family-friendly adventure.

Learning to embody a geriatric character has been a fun challenge, Brock said of playing Charlie’s grandfather, who joins his grandson on the factory tour.

“I have had so much fun trying to figure out the physicality of this character,” he shared. “He’s old, but he’s got a sense of youth to him. He’s spunky.”

The show features a cast of performers ranging from elementary school-age children to high school students. Students come from towns throughout central Pennsylvania, including Landisville, Mount Joy, Elizabethtown, Harrisburg and Hershey. Encore!

Home School Productions has been providing homeschool and cyberschool students with theatrical opportunities and staging theater productions for 25 years.

For senior Ian Riethmiller of Camp Hill, playing the iconic title character has been a lot of fun.

“I think it’s really important to take the character in my own direction,” he said, noting that while he’s never watched the 2005 movie “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” featuring Johnny Depp, he is familiar with the 1971 Gene Wilder version. “I’ve also read the book multiple times. It was one of my favorite books as a small child. I’m trying to take things from myself and put them into this character so I’m not copying anyone.”

Playing Wonka has also presented a challenge because the character is complex, he said.

“Wonka is such a diverse character, and he’s doing all sorts of different things at different times,” Ian explained. “He’s sort of putting on a show inside of this show. For the first half of the show, he’s undercover as the Candy Man, catching the audience up on what’s been happening. Then in the second act, Wonka is fully on stage, and audiences will feel like they’re part of

the story just as much as the kids on the tour are.”

Brock, who lives in Annville, noted that audiences will find the show entertaining and interesting, and he added that it’s full of comedy.

“There are so many scenes that are so funny that we as a cast have struggled to get through in rehearsal without laughing,” he said.

The show features well-known songs such as “The Candy Man” and “Pure Imagination,” as well as lesser-known, but equally entertaining numbers, Ian said.

“You should come see ‘Willy Wonka’ because it’s going to be a good time,” he said. “There’s also a really strong message of making sure that somehow, someway, you get to be doing what you love. Whether it’s your main job or your side job, you should always be chasing those things in your imagination. Chase those things you love, because overall, that’s what’s going to make you happy, and in turn, that’s what’s going to make the rest of the world a better place as well.”

Tickets for “Willy Wonka” are available at www.itickets.com/ events/482303 or via the Encore! website at www.encorehsp.org.

Each year, the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy travels through the county, bringing smiles to the faces of people along the route and raising funds for children facing life-threatening illnesses. You can be part of the fun by joining the event as a Make-A-Wish clown.

Participating as a clown is a fun and easy way to support the effort, said Amy Nolt, whose clown name is hArMonY.

“Pretty much anybody can be a clown,” she said. “I used to be very introverted, but I love doing this.”

To help people get into clown character, Amy holds classes at her Lititz home.

“We teach people how to put

When young people ages 8 to 12 who attend Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Power Camp asked for more sports to be offered at camp, area representatives Diana Roth, Kyle Martin, and Emily Johnson responded. This year, the New Holland camp will offer baseball and track and field in addition to five other sports, and the Manheim camp will offer lacrosse, in addition to six other sports.

The New Holland Power Camp

will be held at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, from Monday, June 16, to Thursday, June 19. The Manheim Power Camp will be held at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim, from Monday, July 14, through Thursday, July 17.

Roth said that the theme for this year’s camps is “Glory,” based on II Corinthians 3:18. The faith-based curriculum will focus on the question “What are you chasing?” by examining

on makeup, how to choose their clown name and outfit,” she said. “We teach them clown etiquette and give pointers on how to interact with people.”

Clown opportunities are available for people of all ages, she said, and no special skills are required.

“Some people do magic tricks as they walk around. Some people do balloons. We had an acrobat last year, but you don’t have to be able to do anything other than be available to walk around, talk to the kids, take pictures with the Wish kids,” she said. “Some

people like to hand out stickers or little items to give away.”

This year’s Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will be held on Saturday, May 10, at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. A family fest will

begin at 9 a.m., and the truck convoy will kick off at 1:30 p.m. Since 1990, almost 12,000 trucks have driven in the convoy, and the event has raised more than $9.2 million, granting wishes to more than 900 children in the Susquehanna Valley.

Amy and her husband, Mark, have been organizing the clowns for about 10 years. Amy has been involved with Make-AWish for almost 30 years.

“I started in college as part of a clown ministry,” she said, noting that when the previous clown organizer found out Amy had clowned in college, he invited her to help out with the convoy.

to cover 26 miles with a few people is a little daunting.”

When she says people of all ages can participate as clowns, she means it. “We take any age,” she said. “Our oldest clown last year was 85. Anyone under 13 must be accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult.”

If people are interested in supporting the fundraiser but don’t want to dress up as clowns, there are opportunities to walk the route as a non-clown as well, she said.

For her character, Amy dresses in a rainbow-striped outfit covered in music notes. Her husband, whose clown name is Teed Off, dresses as a golfer.

The clowns entertain the crowd before the truck convoy departs from the Manheim Auto Auction and then walk along the convoy route, spreading joy as they go.

“We try to cover the entire 26-mile route, but we need help to do that,” Amy said. “We had 14 clowns last year, and that was a big number for recent years. In the past, we’ve had as many as 40 clowns. Trying

Clown classes are held on an as-needed basis, and Amy said she’s available to teach a class on any Saturday or Sunday in April, except for Easter Sunday, April 20.

“I invite anyone who is interested to come to a clown class and learn more,” she said. “The clowns just add a little more fun to the convoy.”

For more information on volunteering as a clown, call or text Amy at 717-587-9841.

SOUP & SALADS

Hop on over for a pancake breakfast

Celebrate the season of Easter at St. John’s Episcopal Church when the church holds a pancake breakfast. The event will take place on Saturday, April 12, from 8 to 10 a.m. at the church, 239 E. Market St., Marietta.

The meal will feature pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit, juice, coffee and special Easter treats. There will also be Easter egg painting for all children starting at 9:30 a.m.

The Easter Bunny will be on-site for pictures and will also hand out candy to all children age 12 and under.

“The breakfast is a great way to start the Easter season with the community,” said Nancy Kulman, church secretary. “The members enjoy cooking and sharing with members of the community, especially the children. Our bunny loves being with the children, getting pictures with them and giving out candy. The children are also invited to color Easter eggs following their meal. It is a great time of fellowship and celebration of spring, new beginnings and Easter.”

Proceeds from the breakfast go back into the community, Kulman

said, although organizers purposely keep the admission to the event low, with a goal of covering their costs. Any extra funds raised will benefit nonprofit organizations.

“Typically, we donate to local causes such as the Donegal Food Bank, the ECHOS winter shelter and Columbia Animal Shelter,” she said.

Holding the breakfast is a way to bring people into the church, connect with the community and potentially encourage people to attend services.

St. John’s Episcopal Church holds Sunday services at 10:30 a.m. Sunday school for children of all ages begins at 10:15 a.m.

For the Easter season, the church will hold a Palm Sunday service with procession at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 13. The Maundy Thursday service will be held at 7 p.m. on April 17, and the Good Friday service will take place at noon on April 18. On Saturday, April 19, an Easter vigil will be held at 7 p.m. On Easter Sunday, April 20, the church will hold its service at 10:30 a.m., with an Easter egg hunt immediately following the service.

There are separate prices for the pancake breakfast for adults and children ages 5 to 12. The event is free for children age 4 and under. Tickets will be available at the door.

For more information, call the church at 717-426-3189.

Church posts Impact

Sunday, women’s group meeting

Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, invites community members to attend Impact Sunday on March 30.

The guest speaker will be Matt Maher, pastor of Landmark Church in Ocean City, N.J. He is a former professional soccer player in North Carolina, New Jersey, and Philadelphia; the author of books such as “U May B the Only Bible Somebody Reads: R U Legible?”; and the host of the podcast “Rechurched.” His Decisions Determine Destiny program has reached more than 500,000 high school and college students. He is married to Sarah, and they have two children. To learn more, visit www.truthover trend.com.

Participants may attend one or more of three sessions: “The World Apart: Are You Falling Apart or Set Apart?” at 9 a.m.; “Discerning the Devil’s Playbook,” which examines Scripture and Nazi Germany, at 10:30 a.m.; and “Truth Over Trend: The Ruin and Redemption of March 7,” featuring Maher’s testimony of his journey from being a soccer player to receiving a prison sentence. Refreshments will be available at 10 a.m., and a light meal will be served at 5:30 p.m.

Chiques Church’s upcoming events also include the Neighbors Sharing and Caring meeting for women of all ages and preschool children. The program will occur on Tuesday, April 1, from 9 to 10:45 a.m.

Lu Ann Wise will speak about the omnipresence of God. Topics will include the wonder of nature, stories in history, and acknowledging God’s presence in everything one does.

Wise resides in the Manheim area and is retired from teaching in Manheim Central School District. She continues to be active in the school district through coaching track and serving as a volunteer adviser to the Interact Service Club. She also volunteers at Teen Central Youth Center in Manheim. Wise

is a member of New Beginnings Christian Fellowship and is active in women’s and children’s ministry. She is a wife, mother, and grandmother. She seeks to encourage women in their walk with God.

During the program, child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners. No preregistration is required. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information.

the quest for individual glory versus reflecting God’s glory. In addition to baseball and track and field, the New Holland camp will offer basketball, field hockey, flag football, lacrosse, and soccer. Roth and Martin are the camp directors. The Manheim camp, which is directed by Johnson, will offer baseball, basketball, field hockey, soccer, volleyball, and wrestling, in addition to lacrosse.

Camps begin at 9 a.m. each day and run until 3:30 p.m. Lunch is provided. Each day has a different dress-up theme. Although the themes for this year’s camps have not been chosen, Roth noted that Wacky Wednesday is always a favorite. Each day begins with worship featuring a worship band and a speaker, usually a local pastor, who speaks on the camp theme. “The speaker at the New Holland camp will be Petra pastor Brian Coles,” reported Martin. The campers enjoy some Dance Dance Revolution time before heading outside for up to 90 minutes of skill work in their chosen

sport. Following lunch, a testimony is given by a high school student or college intern. Afterward, campers practice and have more huddle time before taking part in a group competition, enjoying a snack, and joining in a closing assembly.

Volunteer coaches who work with the children are often high school, college, or club coaches, and many serve for both weeks. Interns assist the directors and coaches.

According to Roth, interns who have helped out at camp previously “know the drill,” so they will be given more leadership responsibility.

“They will lead debrief time at the end of each day and be in charge of group competitions and games,” explained Martin. Huddles, groups of five to seven students, are overseen by a huddle leader.

Huddle leaders are high school students who lead, guide, and encourage campers. About 50 huddle leaders are needed for a camp of 120 to 150 students, which is the number expected at both camps this year.

Student participants are also given the chance to take

part in Coins for Campers, a competition between boys and girls to raise funds for similar camps in the Philippines and Myanmar. Martin stated that in 2024, the goal was to raise $5,000 for the other camps and that the goal was surpassed.

There is a cost to attend camps. A sibling discount is applied when more than one child from a family attends. Some financial assistance is available. Readers who wish to register a child for camp may visit www.lancaster fca.org/camps. Questions about financial assistance may be emailed to droth@ fca.org. Specific questions about the Manheim camp may be sent to emilyjohn son@fca.org.

School to present “Singin’ in the Rain”

Mount Calvary Christian School (MCCS), 629 Holly St., Elizabethtown, will present the musical “Singin’ in the Rain” on Thursday and Friday, April 3 and 4, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, April 5, at 2 and 7 p.m.

Based on the classic film, “Singin’ in the Rain” is set in the 1920s. It follows

Monumental Pictures and its two biggest stars: the charming Don Lockwood and his glamorous yet vocally challenged co-star, Lina Lamont, as they navigate the tumultuous transition from silent films to talkies.

MCCS’ production includes songs like “Good

Morning,” “Make ‘Em Laugh,” and the iconic title number, complete with on-stage rain effects. This show features 38 MCCS students in grades six through 12.
