Mud sale will offer food, fun and bargains
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“There is a little bit of something for everybody, and there are always bargains to be found at the auctions,” said Tom Walsh, describing the Penryn Fire Company and Limerock School mud sale. “You never know what you’re going to find.”
The mud sale will be held on Friday, March 17, and Saturday, March 18, at the fire company, 1441 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. Friday’s activities will kick off at noon, and Saturday’s events will begin at 8:30 a.m.
Starting at noon on Friday, chicken barbecue dinners will be available for people to pick up, said Walsh, who is the chair of the mud sale committee. “Later in the afternoon, by 5 p.m., they can sit and dine in or take it to go,” he stated.
Taking a seat at the table
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
MargaretThatcher once said, “If you want something done, ask a woman.” There’s a whole lot getting done in Lancaster County, because for the first time ever, all of the Chambers of Commerce in the county are led by women. Each woman brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to her role, but all of the leaders share a common goal: They want to make their community a great place to live and work.
Denise Grove, who started her role as executive director of the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of
Commerce in February of 2022, said the job offers her a way to really connect with others. “As a lifetime resident of Elizabethtown, I had a strong desire to work where I could make a difference and be a part of strengthening our community,” she remarked, a sentiment shared by Heather Valudes, who has been president and CEO of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce since June of 2022. “I love Lancaster and the work that we are able to advance to make our employer community as strong as possible,” she said, noting that the Lancaster Chamber is countywide and represents nearly 1,500
businesses, almost half of the county’s workforce.
For Ashley Zell, who became executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce in January, the job brings a chance to get to know her community. “The friends and connections made and the interaction with the Chamber members and community at our numerous different events are definitely the biggest rewards of this position,” Zell said.
The women also remarked that holding the job offers a chance to see their communities thrive. “It’s seeing kids dancing at the farmers market,” commented Rebecca
Branle, who has been executive director of Venture Lititz since August of 2021. “It’s celebrating big wins with merchants. It’s watching this town become ever more alive with art, culture and community pride.” Her perspective matches that of Kristie Schmid, who has been executive director of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce since March of 2021. “I love seeing our community respond to the revitalization in town, the increase in businesses and the new community events,” Schmid said. “It’s fulfilling to put your time into something and then see others have pride in it as well.”
At 5:30 p.m. on Friday, the auctions will start. Friday evening’s auctions will feature grocery items, including frozen meat. A tool auction will also be held on Friday.
Multiple auctions will take place on Saturday. “We are expanding quite a few categories this year,” Walsh stated. “We’ll have crafts and quilts, shrubs and trees, tools again, antiques and collectibles, produce, sporting goods, sheds and swing sets.”
Food will be available all day on Saturday. “We’ll serve more chicken barbecue dinners, subs, hamburgers, hot dogs, breakfast sandwiches, sausage sandwiches, chicken corn soup, drinks and assorted baked goods,” Walsh remarked. “These are the good Amish baked goods.”

Proceeds will benefit both the fire company and the Limerock Parochial School, which is the Amish school network in the area. “It would be impossible for us as a fire company to do this by ourselves,” Walsh noted. “We were approached by the Amish community in 2005, and they asked if we’d be interested in doing this for both them and the fire company, and we wholeheartedly signed up for it.”

Baron teams compete in district playoffs
BY ERIC PYLES
The prevailing thought in the high school basketball world is that the games become tougher once you reach the district playoffs. If that is true, someone forgot to tell the Manheim Central boys’ team. The Barons recently posted two wins with an average margin of victory of 14-points.
The first of those wins came on February 23rd when Central topped Muhlenberg by a 64-54 count. Manheim started slowly, allowing Muhlenberg to build a 14-9 lead over the initial eight minutes of action. The Barons began the work of digging out from that five-point hole with a 1411 edge in the second quarter.
Central inched a bit closer in the third, holding a 19-18 advantage that made it 43-42 entering the final stanza. The Barons found another gear in the fourth leading to a 22-11 run and the 64-54 final.
Only seven players saw action for Manheim with all seven scoring, led by Trey Grube’s game high 21 points.
Aaron Enterline was the only other Baron to reach double digits, finishing with 12 points. Collin Neiles and Jackson Tracy each added eight points. Chase Book followed with his seven-point game and Zachary Banner chipped in with six points with Mason Rogers cleaning up the final two points.
The D3-5A semifinals saw
Manheim Central blow right past Mechanicsburg, 70-52, and on into the 5A title game. Grube dropped another 21 points with Enterline and Book joining the double-digit club, with 18 and 11 points, respectively.
This time around Manheim wasted no time taking control, finishing off the opening frame holding a 26-15 lead. The cushion ballooned to 27points at the break thanks to a 15-9 run through the second quarter. A 14-10 edge coming out of the break pushed the lead to 31-points but Mechanicsburg claimed the fourth 1815 to shrink the final margin to 18-points.
While the sailing in the District 3-5A bracket has been nothing but smooth for the boy’s squad, the Lady Barons hit a snag on February 24th, falling to York Suburban, 4440, in their quarterfinal tilt. The loss ended Central’s district title hopes but not their season as the Lady Barons moved to the consolation side of the bracket for PIAA tournament seeding.
As for the game opposite York Suburban, Manheim Central controlled the opening half leading to a 25-19 lead at the break. Suburban came out of the break on a mission leading to a 10-6 edge in the third, but Manheim still held a slim, 31-29 lead heading into the final frame. Central’s struggles continued in that final frame, allowing the Lady Trojans to steal the
win with a 15-9 edge om the quarter.
Maddie Knier collected a game high 24 points in the loss. Abbie Reed added nine points while Kylie Kroll (five points) and Payton Snyder (two points) finished the scoring.
The Lady Barons used the frustration from that loss as motivation in their February 28th consolation game with West York, leading to a comfy 56-35 victory. While the win was the main story, Knier stole some of the spotlight for herself, becoming just the eighth L-L female to crack the 2,000-point barrier thanks to a game high 25 points pushing her career tally to 2001. She also became Manheim’s all-time leading scorer, male or female, passing Taylor Funk’s 1977 career points.
Despite the 21-point victory on the back end, Manheim stumbled out of the gate leading to a 9-8 West York lead heading into the second quarter. Knier and the rest of the Lady Barons got on track in the second with the senior scoring 10 points during Central’s 21-7 burst. That made it a 29-16 game at intermission with the Lady Bulldogs trimming that lead down to 38-27 after three quarters.
Another hot frame came in the fourth for Central with Knier netting nine of the team’s 18 fourth quarter points, setting the final at 56-35.
BOWLING
Manheim’s bowling season came to a close on February 25th with Hailey Kowalski’s participation in the District 3 Championships. Kowalski made the short trip to Clearview Lanes for the qualifying round, finishing 27th in the 40 person field.
Kowalski’s high in qualifying, 190, came in the third game with the senior adding games of 141, 166, 164 and 136 to finish with a 797.
WRESTLING
The remaining members of Central’s wrestling team made the trek to Spring
Grove High School on February 24th and 25th for the 2023 edition of the District 33A Championship. Two Barons, Brett Barbush and Braxton Keiffer, performed well enough to keep their season alive.
Keiffer went 3-1 at the district tourney, suffering his lone loss in the 114-pound championship bout to Manheim Township’s Kaedyn Williams. Keiffer’s run to silver started with a 16-0 tech fall win over Daniel Boone’s Jackson Drumheller and continued with a quarterfinal pinfall win over Isaiah Jackson (Gettysburg). Keiffer’s final win of the weekend came over Cedar Cliff’s Keegan Zeigler, 11-5 in the semifinals.
Barbush also went 3-1 over the two-day affair but did so in the 160pound bracket where a finals loss to Shippensburg’s Dominic Frontino left the senior holding a silver medal. Barbush kicked off his weekend with a pinfall win over New Oxford’s Lane Johnson, adding an 8-0 major decision win over Conestoga Valley’s Luke Needham
and an 11-7 win over Gettysburg’s Jaxon Townsend before falling in the finals.
Two of the three remaining Barons managed just one win before bowing out of the tournament. Barrett Keiffer was the first, picking up his lone victory in the opening round of the 127-pound bracket. Keiffer topped Exeter’s Joey Henderson by a 2-0 final before losses to Luke Mentzer (Chambersburg) and Jerry Battoli (New Oxford) ended the freshman’s season.
Brodie Daugherty claimed
the remaining victory, knocking off Waynesboro’s Titus Mong via pinfall in the first round of consolation action at 172 pounds. Daugherty suffered both his losses via pinfall, falling to Wilson’s Blaise Eidle in the opening round and to Cocalico’s Jonathan Rathman in the consolation bracket.
Wyatt Kupres was the final Baron to compete at Spring Grove, but the senior was unable to find his footing. That resulted in losses to Twin valley’s Ean Winchester and Red Land’s Ethan Eisner.

For some of the Chamber leaders, the role is a full-time job. For others, it’s something they do in addition to other employment. As a financial adviser for Edward Jones, Jona Green serves as head of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce on a volunteer basis, but she’s just as committed to that role as she is her paid job. “The biggest reward is absolutely the connection to our schools and community,” said Green, who has been leading her Chamber since March of 2022. “Our reach is large, but our heart is rooted in service and making more things possible for our members.”
Although each of the Chambers faces its own challenges, the directors all project positivity when it comes to their communities. “Right now, we see the biggest challenge for a number of our members to be finding enough employees,” said Kerry Meyers, who stepped down as executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce after more than 11 years and is now executive assistant to Zell. “And for our small shops in Mount Joy, it is getting customers in their doors. We need the community to support small local businesses.”
Liz Ackerman, who has been executive director of the
Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce since January of 2019, said her organization faces a challenge of keeping pace with expansion.
“We are growing at an exponential rate,” she explained, noting that she values maintaining a close connection with all of the Chamber’s 430-plus members. “We pride ourselves on knowing every member’s name and understanding their needs.”
For some of the directors, being a female leader in the world of business has been a challenge they’ve faced with grace. “I have learned to embrace my leadership style and not shy away from opportunities to lead,” said Grove, noting that she attributes her success to surrounding herself with strong female role models. “Confidence in yourself is key. We all belong at the table, so be brave enough to pull up a chair. If you are afraid, do it anyway.”
That’s a feeling Branle said she understands. “My worst enemy has always been the negative voice in my head, telling me to question my worthiness,” she stated. “If you, too, have a voice like that, learn to tell her to be quiet.”
As committed as they are to
their Chambers, all of the women have managed to find a work-life balance.
Meyers has been married for 45 years and loves spending time with her two children and five grandchildren. Zell is raising a family of three with her husband, and they enjoy hiking and attending Faith Bible Fellowship Church. Valudes is the married mother of twin daughters, serves as secretary for the Paradise Township Lions Club and helps with Girl Scouts. Grove and her husband enjoy spending time with their seven children and eight grandchildren, and Grove is active with the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown, where she will serve as president beginning in 2025. Ackerman and her husband are raising two children, and she describes herself as a “serial volunteer” with numerous organizations. Branle and her husband have three children, and the family loves to bike, travel and play “very competitive family football games.” Green and her husband are
raising two children who are active in their high school’s marching band, and she joked that her favorite hobby is “networking.” Schmid has been married for 22 years, has three girls and loves to read, shop and explore local breweries.
As for advice for other female leaders, each woman referenced striking a balance between being assertive and being kind. “Work with integrity,” Zell stated. “Be willing to humble yourself. Be respectful of others in the workplace and the community.”
Ackerman advised that women should also be kind to themselves. “Own your talents and always accept a compliment,” she remarked. “This is one of the hardest things to learn, but recognizing your strengths, especially when someone points them out to you, provides a confidence that will reach far beyond anything you can read in a book.”
And don’t underestimate what you can achieve, Schmid said, adding, “Never limit yourself. Find your passion and put your all into developing it so you can bring your best to the table.”

On the third Monday of each month, the Lancaster County Postcard Club meets at the Farm & Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. During the meetings, which are open to the public, members gather to discuss postcards on a wide variety of topics. Each meeting features a specific theme and includes a talk from a guest speaker who focuses on that theme.
In January, the club creates a schedule of which themes will be incorporated throughout the year, and the topic of the club’s meetings can be anything from railroads to boats to hometowns. For its meeting in January, the club had members share postcards relating to their favorite holidays. On Feb. 20, the topic of the meeting was cartoons and humor, and attendees participated in a member’s market to buy and sell postcards.
Jere Greider of Mountville has been a member of the postcard club for over 20 years, first becoming interested in them while adding to his collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia. After Greider found a Coca-Cola postcard, he began to shift his focus to collecting postcards from around Lancaster County.
communicate with others who lived nearby before the invention of the telephone, as a way to stay connected with each other. Today, postcards are primarily found in tourist attractions, but many vintage cards still circulate in antique stores and on the internet.
“Postcards cover every topic imaginable,” Greider said. “We have so many antique stores and outlets here in central Pennsylvania where you can find them.” Besides combing through local antiques stores, Greider often finds items to add to his collection by searching for postcards on websites like eBay. Throughout his many years spent collecting postcards, Greider has learned more about the market and what people are seeking. Currently, he is focused on collecting postcards that originate from the Mountville area and the surrounding towns.
During the March meeting, set for Monday, March 20, at 7 p.m., the Lancaster County Postcard Club will share postcards from various places of worship. For more information, search for “Lancaster County Postcard Club” on Facebook.
