Students in the cast and crew of the Manheim Central High School (MCHS) spring musical are thrilled to be presenting “Into the Woods,” the wildly popular and musically sophisticated show featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. A modern mash-up of classic fairy tales, “Into the Woods” brings main characters from “Cinderella,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Rapunzel,” and other beloved tales together in a story about a baker and his wife and their wish to start a family.

Sharp explained that the new event is designed to raise funds for the community projects that the Women’s Club of Manheim is involved with and contributes to.

The bingo is replacing the club’s traditional fall benefit auction.

According to Sharp, the Women’s Club of Manheim contributes more than $10,000 a year to the community. “One hundred percent of everything we raise goes

back into the community,” emphasized Sharp.

The club has contributed funding to projects and groups including the Manheim Community Library Summer Reading Program, Secret Santa gifts for students in Manheim Central School District (MCSD), Manheim Central Food Pantry, Manheim Historical Society, scholarships for senior girls at Manheim Central High School, MCSD elementary Run for Fitness and All Pro Dads, banners in Manheim, Aaron’s Acres, and activities for residents at Danner Home and Pleasant View Communities.

Thus far, designer purses that will serve as bingo prizes have been sponsored by the following businesses: Manheim Auto Auction, Diehm & Sons, Baron Insurance Group, JBT Bank, Heistand Automotive, Kountry Kitchen Family Restaurant, Hondru Dealerships, CPRS Physical Therapy, Law Office of James Clark, Young & Young Attorneys at Law, and Ferrellgas. “One of the messages (of ‘Into the Woods’) is that the happy ending that you wish for isn’t always what you need,” stated senior Nina Bonanno, who will portray a witch who casts a spell on the baker, played by senior Johnny Brown, and the baker’s wife, played by senior Elise Deppen.

“My character makes bread.

That’s his passion,” said Johnny with a laugh. “My main goal is to undo the spell the witch put on my house.”

Throughout the show, Elise said, the audience will get to see different sides to the classic fairy tale characters - including their downsides. “Everyone learns their own lesson through their flaws and the consequences of what they do,” noted Elise.

The witch, for instance, often appears cruel and harsh, but Nina said her character is actually a loving, caring mother. “She really does care for Rapunzel, but she doesn’t know how to show it,” said Nina. “One of the hardest parts of playing her is being able to show both sides, and also her songs are very challenging.”

As a whole, the MCHS cast members agreed that the music in “Into the Woods” lives up to its reputation of being difficult. “A lot of people say that you have to be a musician for this show. You can’t just be a singer, because you actually have to read that music,” explained junior Paul Hurst, who portrays Cinderella’s prince. “We have a lot of great musicians and a lot of good chemistry between characters.”

Sophisticated as the music may be, the students are smitten with its beauty and believe audience members will be, too. People may recognize songs from the 2014 Disney movie version of “Into the Woods” featuring Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, and

“We want (Door Frames) to have less of a traditional church vibe, because we understand that a lot of people have been hurt by the church,” explained Meghan. By meeting outside of the sanctuary and in the evening, organizers are hoping that new people will feel welcome to attend. “We want people to get together and worship and be in the presence of God,” stated Meghan.

In addition to her role at the church, Meghan works at The Bake Shoppe at Country Table in Mount Joy. She

plans to return to serve on staff at Gretna Glen Camp & Retreat Center in Lebanon for its programs this summer.

In February, St. Mark’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 27 E. Main St., Mount Joy, hired Meghan Brenneman as its new director of contemporary worship. Meghan’s primary role will be planning and leading the church’s contemporary worship service, which takes place at 10:45 a.m. on Sundays, following the traditional service at 9 a.m.

Born and raised in Mount Joy, Meghan grew up attending St. Mark’s UMC and is a 2015 Donegal High School graduate.

Meghan’s mother, Pam Brenneman, was instrumental in establishing a contemporary worship service at St. Mark’s UMC before she died in 2011. Pam played the piano in the worship band as well. Meghan said that she dabbles in piano, but the guitar is

her strong suit. She began playing guitar in middle school. As she developed in skill, she was asked to join the worship band at St. Mark’s UMC and has been playing with the group ever since.

Aside from Sunday services, Meghan is excited to launch a monthly Sunday evening contemporary service: Door Frames.

The public is welcome to attend Door Frames, which meets at 7 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month in the third floor of the St. Mark’s UMC Ministry Center, located adjacent to the main church building at 37 E. Main St., Mount Joy. The evening will begin with a time for drinking coffee and hanging out, followed by what Meghan described as an intentional time of worship and prayer.

Flinchbaugh from pg 1 the scheduled programming. “(Lead Now) is a cool opportunity to be able to grow as a leader,” said eighth-grader Trace Forry said. “It (develops) good life skills to have, because at some point in life you’re going to have to lead.” Trace leads chapel programs at MCDS, an experience that he said has already taught him to be more organized as he coordinates programs with both students and faculty members. Trace said that the projects he and his classmates take part in stretch them in new ways and afford them the chance to meet new people.

Some of the other efforts that Lead Now students have helped with this year have included serving a meal to people in need at City Gate Lancaster, hosting a baby shower for an MCDS teacher, and planning a special school lunchtime with intentionally mixed-up seating and conversation starters.

4-H Club Seeks Volunteers Every year, youths from towns across the country participate in 4-H clubs, including a club in Mount Joy. This local club is seeking volunteers, who are necessary to its operation.

The 4-H youth organization aims to develop citizenship, leadership, responsibility, and life skills in 8- to 18-year-olds through project-based learning.

There is also a Cloverbuds sector for 5- to 8-year-olds. At the club’s monthly meetings, youth members participate in a business meeting, an educational and/or service-oriented program, and games. Refreshments are available.

The club also offers various

projects that youth members can select to complete. Topics include foods, sewing and beekeeping. These projects are led by volunteers from the community who specialize in their respective activity’s area. Project work is completed at meetings held separately from the club meetings, with dates and times dependent on the activity and the volunteer leader’s schedule.

In Mount Joy, Jess Graybill is the calligraphy project leader. Graybill joined 4-H as a club member when she was 8 and became a volunteer when she became too old for club membership. She has taught the calligraphy project for 13 years.

Joy Helsel became a leader for the first time last year after being involved in the Mount Joy 4-H Community Club for eight years because of her

children’s membership. Her first activity as a project leader was to guide participants in the candy making project.

Each year, new projects are added, and returning projects need new leaders. New volunteers may join at any time, and they may choose their level of involvement within the club.

The Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (NECTFL) has announced that it has awarded the NECTFL Teacher of the Year award to Megan Flinchbaugh of Lancaster, representing the Pennsylvania State Modern Language Association (PSMLA). Flinchbaugh, a teacher of Spanish in Manheim Central School District, received her award on Feb. 14 at the annual NECTFL Awards Ceremony at the NY Hilton Midtown in New York City.

Students in Flinchbaugh’s classes are immersed in Spanish from the very first day of class.

Known for demonstrating passion about teaching and learning, Flinchbaugh engages her students in tasks where they take what they learn in the classroom and use it beyond the four walls of the school in an authentic way. She aims to have students look through the lens of both language use and culture, whether they are conducting an interview with a native speaker from the community, attending a cultural event where Spanish is spoken, independently reading an authentic children’s book about a famous

Hispanic personality, or watching a television show in Spanish. One of her current students noted that Flinchbaugh has inspired her to pursue a major in Spanish education.

Flinchbaugh also provides sessions at state, regional, and national conferences on a wide range of topics of interest to world language educators.

Each year, the Northeast Conference chooses its Teacher of the Year from among the candidates selected by the states in the Northeast region.

This individual then represents the organization at the National Language Teacher of the Year competition at the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Convention in November. The award for the National Language Teacher of the Year is intended to elevate the status and the public profile of the language teaching profession at the state, regional, and national levels by recognizing the individuals chosen for this award.

program open to MCDS seventh- and eighth-graders, had planned three stations that the seniors could rotate through, and the morning concluded with a musical performance by several students.

MCDS administrator Justin Sauder explained that Lead Now began at the school four years ago and is open to any student in seventh or eighth grade who is interested in honing and developing leadership skills. “We meet about every two weeks and have a discussion on leadership values, and they volunteer their time for projects that they come up with,” Sauder said. The anticipation is that the hands-on service opportunities in Lead Now will allow each student to develop a working knowledge of what leadership looks like and entails, as well as to discover his or her God-given gifts and talents.

Seventeen students are part of this year’s Lead Now program. At Pleasant View, the students planned and implemented stations of sports-themed Jeopardy, charades, and improv storytelling - all of which PV residents seemed to enjoy. Wolves At The Library Author To Discuss Book About Pennsylvania Sanctuary

Chuck Rineer, wildlife photographer and author, easily recalls the first time he was introduced to wolves up close and personal

by his friend Bill Darlington, founder of the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania, 465 Speedwell Forge Road, Lititz.

In the late 1970s, Rineer and his kindergarten-age son were invited to the Darlington home. “We went in the house, and he told us to sit on the couch in the living room and to stay there,� said Rineer. “He opened a door and these little fluff balls came out. They were the first two (wolf) pups they had.�

Many years later, Rineer began volunteering at the sanctuary, and he took his first photos of wolves. A few years ago, Rineer wrote the book “ Wolf Sanctuary: The Wolves of Speedwell Forge.� He will give a multimedia presentation on the book and his experiences at the sanctuary at the Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, on Tuesday, March 10,

beginning at 6 p.m. In addition to the book, Rineer’s photos have been included in a number of publications, including National Geographic Magazine online photo library.

Rineer served in the military for nearly three decades and then worked with the military for 10 more years before going back to his love of photography. He began taking photos of birds of prey around 2000. One day while on his way to the Conowingo River to take photos of eagles, he recalled his introduction to wolves through Darlington. He learned that Darlington had passed away from cancer, but representatives of the Wolf Sanctuary invited him to visit, and he volunteered there for more than a dozen years, taking nearly 60,000 photographs of the wolves that lived there over that time. “I fell in love with the animals,� said Rineer, who noted that wolf pack dynamics are similar to human family interaction. “There is so much to be learned about them and the way humans act,� he said. “Unless you have spent a lot of time with the animals, you wouldn’t realize that, but they are family-oriented and

perspective on their behavior. “Their body language is something I have studied extensively while photographing them,� he said, noting that the position of the tail or ears give clues to the observer, but that the eyes are the most fascinating. “Intimidation is one of their best aspects of (wolf) body language,� he said. “If they know you are fearful, they will tease you. They will scratch in front of you and snap at you.� His years in the wolf enclosures have given him the experience to be in close contact with wolves. “If they intimidate, you stand upright and stand your ground,� he said. “In five or 10 minutes, they will walk away and go about their business.�

Rineer said that packs will have both alpha and beta males. “The beta is kind of the peacekeeper,� he said, adding that each wolf in a pack has a role and that all the wolves are aware of their own role and the roles of others. “It goes down to the omega (wolf), and he is kind of a jokester,� said Rineer. “(The omega) is always trying to keep it lighthearted and happy.� Alpha females have their role in the pack as well. “The alpha male is boss, but the alpha female is in charge,� said Rineer. “She has a lot of regulatory options she can play.�

Rineer recalled a photo that he did not take that depicts his experience with two of the wolves at the sanctuary. Denny Binkley, his friend and spotter during his time as sanctuary photographer, took a photo of Rineer in close contact with two wolves. “I was sitting on a little mound of dirt, and Cheyenne came up and sat in my lap and Loci came and sat beside me,� said Rineer, who noted that wolves do not normally like to be around people. “You usually see them from far away,� he noted. “We are the only enemy that they have.�

Railroad Museum Offers Programs The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, offers family-friendly and innovative education and preservation programs. Also, the museum’s world-class collection of about 100 historic locomotives and vintage railroad cars includes everything from classic wood burners and mammoth steam locomotives to sleek, electric-powered and diesel engines. A number of authentic locomotives and railroad cars are open regularly for visitors to explore.

In addition, the museum will offer a variety of special events throughout the year. Special

seniors age 65 and over and children ages 3 to 11. Children age 2 and under may visit free of charge.

There is a separate fee for most special events.

Manheim Central’s Brandon Henry and Austin Howard were two of about 200 bowlers to compete in Regionals at Leisure Lanes Friday, Feb. 28.

Neither senior made it out of the first round, as both struggled to adjust to the oil pattern used for the tournament. It was a heavier oil shot, different from the normal house shot they were used to, Barons’ coach Alan Sides said.

Henry rolled games of 210, 179, 177, 233, and 183 for a total of 982 and finished 48th. Howard rolled games of 157, 179, 193, 178, and 215 for a total of 922. He fell out of the top 50 bowlers. The tournament only ranks the top 50.

Regionals marked the end of the season for Manheim’s bowling team and a strong run for Henry, who finished 26th out of 36 in the boys’ District Three Singles Tournament Feb. 21 at Clearview Lanes in Mount Joy. He had scores of 172, 174, 214, 201, 181, and 131 for a six-game total of 1,073.

The top six bowlers advanced.

Howard, did not qualify for districts, but made Regionals by being only 6/100th of a pin from the field and having one bowler drop out.

Henry and Howard were two of five seniors on Manheim’s team. The others included Oren Martin, John Greenwald and Joey Noble.

Even with the departure of five seniors, the future looks bright for the Barons. They will return juniors Cole Shontz, Sarah Rhodes and sophomore Joshua Shaw. Sides said the crop of junior varsity bowlers are progressing and should do well. The projected starters should be freshmen Jesse Hurst, Ethan Howard, junior Catey Sides, sophomore Caden Hartman and a spot to be determined.

SWIMMING Manheim Swim coach Heather Fittery received a call last Wednesday night, two days before her swimmers were set to compete in the District Three Championships at Cumberland Valley High School.

There was a mistake and all five entries for the Barons were classified incorrectly for Class 2A when

Manheim was competing in Class 3A. The mistake wasn’t caught until several days after everything was announced and posted on social media and the newspaper. “They didn’t catch it right away because they had been looking at the wrong classification for next year which is Class 2A,� Fittery said. “It is very frustrating. So next year we are looking forward to getting swimmers into the meet.�

He was also incorrectly qualified in the 100 free and was part of the 200 free relay team with fellow seniors Luke Weaver and Ethan Harner and freshman Wyatt Kupres. On the girls’ side, sophomore Olivia Faulhaber was incorrectly qualified in the 50 and 100 free.

Next year the Barons will compete in Class 2A in districts and this will not be an issue, Fittery said.

A group of Hempfield School District teachers will run summer technology camps for students this summer. The camps will be based on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). This will be the 10th year that Hempfield teachers will offer their expertise in the summer to students looking to learn something new and have fun in the process.

This year, five teachers will offer camps in movie making, digital photography, robotics, and, new this year, video game design and computer programming.

The camps are open to all students, even if they do not attend Hempfield schools. While the camps are held in Hempfield facilities, they are not sponsored by the school district. We are seeking a self-motivated full-time Water and Wastewater Lab Technician to join our team in Manheim, PA and become an integral part of our team. The successful candidate primarily performs routine laboratory analysis and related tasks under the supervision of the Operations Manager.

Candidates must possess reliable transportation, a valid PA driver’s license, and live within 30 minutes of our facilities.

Strong safety awareness and a good record and understanding of safe work practices are essential.

FT PARTS RUNNER Rohrer’s has an opportunity for a Parts Runner in our Service Center. You’ll use a company vehicle to pick-up and deliver truck, auto, heavy equipment, and machinery parts and other equipment. Additional duties include inspecting and storing parts, basic maintenance and clean-up duties. Candidates must possess a valid PA driver’s license, a good driving record, be able to lift and push/pull up to 75 lbs. Previous experience or knowledge of auto, truck, and/or heavy equipment parts is a plus, but not required.

DSAA Sets Programs Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA), 78 E. Main St., Mount Joy, will offer its Certified Family Recovery Specialist (CFRS) series of programs. Unless noted otherwise, the programs will take place on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Topics will include the following: The Addiction Process, March 13; Addiction and Family, March 20, 9 a.m. to noon; Crisis Intervention Strategies for Peer Supports, March 20, from 1 to 4 p.m.; A Common Vision of Recovery, March 27; Do You Hear What I Hear: Lessons in Effective Communication, April 3; PeerBased Recovery Support Services, April 10; Family Healing and Recovery 101, April 17; Advocacy, Support and Systems Navigation, April 24, from 9 a.m. to noon; SelfCare and Resiliency Building, April 24, from 1 to 4 p.m.; CFRS: From Surviving to Thriving, May 1; Ethics and Boundaries for Family Peer Supports, May 8; and Confidentiality, date to be announced.

The CFRS credential is for adults who have been directly impacted by another person’s substance use disorder. A CFRS shares their experiences with other families to provide recovery support services. A CFRS is trained to help families move into and through the recovery process. Individuals who complete the CFRS series will be eligible to obtain board certification through the Pennsylvania Certification Board. It is preferred that attendees complete the entire series.
