Bringing joy to hospitalized children
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
It’sno fun for a child to be in the hospital, but thanks to Northwest EMS, pediatric hospital stays are a little happier. Northwest EMS collects toys for Child Life, an initiative that provides new toys to children who are hospitalized.
Northwest EMS started the partnership with Child Life in 2021. “Our office manager, Luci, had a granddaughter in the hospital in November and December of 2020, and visits were limited,” explained Lori Shenk, community outreach manager for Northwest EMS. “Her granddaughter, Taylor, had a lot of anxiety about being there, but every day that Taylor was in the hospital, members of the Child Life team would visit her. They played cards with her, did puzzles, played board games, and they developed a friendship with her.” Taylor got to keep
Indoor yard sale will have something for everyone
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Bargains abound at the indoor yard sale at Ruhl’s Church, but the day is about more than just scoring a deal. “I think people like to come and socialize with everyone,” said Barb Dunmire, one of the event volunteers. “We have a lot of the same stand holders year after year, and people come out looking to just talk to each other. It’s fun.”
The 23rd annual indoor yard
sale will be held on Saturday, March 11, from 7 to 11 a.m. in the fellowship hall of the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.
More than 30 vendors will sell a variety of items. “The sky’s the limit on what you might see for sale,” said Kris Gray, one of the organizers. “There will be antiques and collectibles, kids’ clothes, toys, household goods, puzzles, truly anything you could think of. You never know what’s going to show up.”

every toy and game she received during her stay.
“The Child Life team members would come in and distract her during procedures, and their presence made the biggest difference for her,” Shenk said. The then-10-yearold mentioned Child Life to her grandmother and suggested it might be a project Northwest EMS would like to take on.
All four Northwest EMS stations - in Maytown, Brickerville, Elizabethtown and Manheimparticipate in the program. Toys are collected year-round at the stations, and Shenk delivers the collection to Penn State Health Children’s Hospital and Lancaster General Hospital throughout the year.
“Doing something like Child Life is important to us, because we want to support our community,” Shenk shared. She noted that the stations are always accepting donations of new, unwrapped toys for children
age 17 and under. “It’s easy to pick up a toy to donate, and people should not just think about what their child would like, but think about something any child would like,” she recommended. “The dollar store and other discount stores are excellent places to get activity books or craft supplies.” Other suggested donations include board books, Legos, dolls, DVDs, video games and Play-Doh.
“W hen someone drops off a donation, they should be sure to tell the person who receives it at the station that it’s for Child Life,” Shenk stated.
Northwest EMS stations are located in Maytown, 186 Rock Point Road; Brickerville, 10 Hopeland Road, Lititz; Elizabethtown, 380 W. Bainbridge St.; and Manheim, 60 W. Colebrook St.
For more information on the Child Life program or on making a donation, contact Shenk at 717371-8282 or lshenk@nwems86.org.
Going old school for a cause
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
If the winter blues have you feeling low, head out for a fun night guaranteed to raise your spirits. Iron-Leg Corp. will host a Back to the ’70s and ’80s Dance Party on Saturday, March 11. The event will be held at Club Twenty3, 1703 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, from 7 p.m. to midnight.
“Come out, dust off your platform shoes and help support a great cause,” said Sean Laukhuff, vice president of Iron-Leg. “Come enjoy the night with friends and dancing and just let loose.”
The festivities will feature ’70s and ’80s music from a DJ, a photo
booth, a signature Iron-Leg drink and a silent auction. “We’ll have lots of sports memorabilia, memorabilia from the ’70s and ’80s and really something for everyone at the auction,” Laukhuff commented. People are encouraged to come in their best ’70s and ’80s costumes, and a costume contest will be held. “ We’ll award prizes for the best male, best female and best couple,” Laukhuff noted.
Proceeds from the party will benefit Iron-Leg Corp., a Lancasterbased nonprofit organization that raises funds for children in need of prosthetics. The organization was started by Matt Millhouse and See Old school pg 5

There’s something for everyone at the indoor yard sale at Ruhl’s Church.
The event will also feature food for sale, including egg sandwiches, homemade chicken corn noodle soup, hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches, baked goods and beverages. A table will again be set up with new and used Bibles and devotional materials for people of all ages, offered for free. “We did that last year, and it was very well received,”
Gray stated.
Proceeds from the event, including stand holder donations and food sales, help to fund the missions and ministry activities of the Sunshine Sunday school class. The adult class organizes and distributes food boxes for local families in need at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter and supports the church’s participation in filling shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse at Christmas. The class also hosts a banquet for senior citizens, sends cards to homebound people, donates winter coats for children and supports three local ministries.
Dunmire said the yard sale is a fun event for everyone, whether they pick up some new items or not. She added, “Come out and have some great food and socialize.”
Doors will not open until 7 a.m. for the sale. Free parking is available in the church’s large lot, and the building is handicapped-accessible. Neither pets nor smoking is permitted inside the building, and masks are optional. For more information, call the church office at 717-665-3400.

Laukhuff, who were looking for a way to give back to the community when they realized they could raise funds for a cause close to home.
Millhouse’s son, Parker, was born without a right leg, so Millhouse and Laukhuff created Iron-Leg in 2020, named in Parker’s honor. The organization has a mission of not only paying for high-end prosthetics for children and youths age 18 and younger, but also making sure recipients receive therapy to learn how to use them. Iron-Leg has helped children in Lancaster and York counties, raising thousands of dollars. Each prosthetic can cost between $5,000 and $50,000.
Last year’s dance party, held at The Village Nightclub, raised close to $10,000, a goal Laukhuff hopes to meet again this year. Additional fundraisers for the organization include a golf tournament and a car show.
Laukhuff noted that Iron-Leg is looking for board members who have a passion for making a difference in a child’s life. “If you have a heart for community and a desire to give back, we’d love to talk to you,” he said.
In the meantime, he hopes to draw a good crowd to the dance party, adding, “It’s winter, and we’ve all been cooped up inside. Get out of the house and come to a party.”
The dance party is for people age 21 and older. Tickets may be purchased for a discount by using a QR code found on Iron-Leg’s Facebook page. Tickets will also be available the door. For more information, visit www.ironleg.org.

Old school
Sean Laukhuff with a ticket to the dance party
BY ERIC PYLES
The old saying, “There is a first time for everything,” most likely had nothing to do with basketball, much less high school boys’ basket-
ball but it still applies to Manheim Central. The Barons used a 49-46 semifinal win in the LancasterLebanon League Championships to earn their first ever finals trip but the ‘firsts’ ended there as Hemp-
field posted a 57-46 win to claim the L-L crown.
The championship tilt started well for Central with Manheim jumping out to a 12-8 lead after the opening frame. The Black Knights
controlled the second frame, doubling the Barons, 16-8, giving Hempfield a 24-20 lead at the break.
A slim 16-15 edge in the third for Manheim put the teams just three points apart with eight minutes remaining. Hempfield controlled those eight minutes, outsourcing Manheim Central 18-10 during the frame, making it a 57-46 final.
Trey Grube netted a team high 19 while Zachary Benner finished with 10 as the only other double-digit scorer.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Having already bowed out of the L-L tournament the Lady Baron hoopsters shifted their focus to the District 3-5A playoffs where Section Two foe, Warwick, was waiting. Central had little trouble dispatching the Lady Warriors, collecting a 47-26 victory that earned them a district quarterfinal game as well as a PIAA-5A playoff game.
Maddie Knier was the star of the show as the lone player in double figures. The senior’s 19 points were not only the game’s high mark, but
also pushed her career total to 1952 points, moving her past Hilary Waltman and into first place on Manheim Central’s all-time scoring list.
BOWLING
Central’s bowling team, like the rest of the L-L League, split their time between Palmyra Bowling and Leisure Lanes for the singles portion of the post-season. Up first were the Lady Barons and the girl’s singles championship at Palmyra on the 16th. Hailey Kowalski tallied 825 pins over her six qualifying games, placing her 23rd in the final standings. Sara Lewis was two spots back in 25th thanks to her 794-qualifying tally.
Over on the boy’s side, it was Ethan Howard taking the top spot for Manheim, finishing 30th after a 1013 qualifying score. Jesse Hurst was two spots back in 32nd with his 1008 while Landan Statts finished 47th after his 951-qualifying round.
WRESTLING
What do you get when you send 12 Manheim Central wrestlers to compete in the District 3-3A Sectional round at Hempfield High School? You end up with seven podium finishes, including five that will move on thanks to their top four finishes.
Brett Barbush was the top Baron, grabbing gold at 160 with a perfect 3-0 day. Barbush opened with pinfall wins over Devin Forney (Elizabethtown) and Gabe Sanchez (Warwick) before using a 14-4 major decision win over Central Dauphin’s Michael Beers to capture gold.
Braxton Keiffer just missed joining Barbush atop the medal stand, settling for silver after a 114-pound finals loss to Manheim Township’s Kaedyn Williams. Keiffer’s two wins came over Luke Hitchcock (Central Dauphin) and Palmyra’s Joshua Smith.

Manheim’s other Keiffer, Barrett, ended up one spot lower on the podium, finishing third in the 127pound bracket after his 4-1 day. Barrett opened with wins over Justin Oliver (Manheim Township) and Ben Farr (Hershey) but had his title hopes derailed with a semifinal loss to Hempfield’s Seamus Mack. Rebound wins over Palmyra’s Xavier Hoffer and the bronze clinching win over Etown’s Austin Reitmeyer followed.
Two Barons enjoyed fourth place runs at Hempfield starting with Brodie Daugherty at 172. The sophomore went 2-2 on the day starting with a win over Hershey’s Matthew Locklier. Daugherty fell to eventual champ Kevin Olavarria (McCaskey) in the semifinals but rebounded with a win over Central Dauphin’s Arthur Ruud to stay alive. A loss to LampeterStrasburg’s Jaiden Newton in the consolation finals left Daugherty holding the fourth-place medal.
Wyatt Kupres was the other fourth place finisher, doing so at 285. Kupres opened with a win over Penn Manor’s Carter Rachor but saw his title hopes crushed by a quarterfinal loss to Donegal’s Nicholai Brotzman, the eventual champ. Kupres ripped off three straight wins to land in the consolation finals where Lampeter-Strasburg’s Treson Spahr came out on top. Those three straight wins were over Caleb Rainey (Susquehanna Township), Ryan Hottenstein (Elizabethtown) and Cory Schaffer (Hershey).
Manheim Central also collected two fifth place finishes, one from Noah Templin and the other from Blake Fasnacht. Templin did his work in the 215-pound bracket, going 4-2 on the day. Templin opened with a win over Hempfield’s Nicky Bruno only to fall out of the championship bracket with a loss to McCaskey’s Jose Garcia. Wins over Susquehanna Township’s Rayshawn Johnson and Hershey’s David Essis led to a setback opposite Tyler Quinter (Milton Hershey). That loss dropped Templin into the fifth-sixth place match which he won over Central Dauphin’s Luke Nye.
Fasnacht earned his fifth-place medal at 107, going 2-2 in the process. The sophomore opened with a loss to Penn Manor’s Riley Evans while ending his time at Hempfield with a win over Journie Rodriguez to nab fifth place. In between was a win over Milton Hershey’s William Olson and a loss to Solanco’s Caden Rutt.
Rocco Daugherty picked up Manheim’s final podium finish, taking sixth at 189 pounds. The senior opened with a win over Palmyra’s Kadin Jones but consecutive losses to Bryson Cantrell (McCaskey) and Eli Poyer (Central Dauphin) set up a rematch with Jones that went to the Palmyra junior.
The four remaining Barons combined for four wins before seeing their season come to an end. Logan Forrest went 2-2 in the 152-pound bracket with wins over Milton Hershey’s William Dick and McCaskey’s Eh Klu Soe. AJ Hondru (145) and Jake Hess (139) had one win each while Cody Hess (133) was unable to crack the win column. Hondru’s win came over Lampeter-Strasburg’s Josh Heisey while Jake Hess picked up his victory by pinning Solanco’s Andrew Smith.
