DSAA Invites Community To New Programs

Humankind Water sells bottled water, organic tea, and lemonade with a greater purpose in mind: funding clean water projects for people around the world. “We exist to get people clean drinking water,” stated Meg Foltz. She serves as vice president of marketing for Humankind and as director of missions for the kindHuman Foundation, the nonprofit organization set up in conjunction with the company specifically to provide wells or water filtration or rain catchment systems to communities where people desperately need it.

by Humankind at the kindHuman Foundation “Made For This” fundraisers at SUPPLY in Manheim on March 13 and at Merion Tribute House in Philadelphia on March 12. The kindHuman Foundation funds clean water projects for people in need around the world.

Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) executive director Stacy Emminger and assistant director Lexi Mercado want people to know that DSAA is open and available for them. “ We’re open to everybody,” said Emminger. “We consider ourselves a community recovery center, and when we have these programs we want people in recovery to come, but we also want people in the community to come.

Our goal is to bring people together.”

1952. The structure remained vacant until Melvin’s father and mother, Mary Eby, purchased it in 1955 and converted it into a dwelling that they moved into in 1957. Tragically, John died unexpectedly from a massive heart attack at age 56 in 1958. Mary continued living in the schoolhouse-turnedhome until 1985, when she moved to a retirement community.

“The deed to my parents said that if they wanted to sell it at any time, the church would have the first chance to buy it,” explained Melvin. Erisman Mennonite Church bought the schoolhouse in 1985, and since that time it has been used for youth group and small group activities of the congregation.

Elder Rich Nolt shared that in recent years, church members developed a vision for remodeling the structure back to its original glory - and then some. Nolt said the purpose for the renovated space is to foster connections and provide a cozy, welcoming meeting place beyond the typical church setting.

Project coordinator Dennis Nissley said work will begin in mid-March and should be completed by August. Exterior renovation plans include replacing the current windows with larger windows resembling those that would have been part of the original schoolhouse and installing a bell tower. Interior renovations are planned to convert the main floor into an open space that will be used for events. The space will also include a handicapped-accessible restroom and entrances, as well as a small kitchen.

Built in 1884, the schoolhouse originally served as Lincoln School for students in grades one through eight. Manheim resident Melvin Eby, a lifelong member of Erisman Mennonite Church, attended Lincoln School from 1939 to 1947. His ties to the building do not end there: His father, John Eby, went to school there before him and became ordained as a minister at Erisman Mennonite Church in 1945. Melvin can recall being dismissed from school on a Wednesday morning with his classmates to cross the dirt road - now South Erisman Road - to attend the meeting at the church where it was announced that his father would become the minister. At that time, the minister at Erisman was responsible for preaching on three Sundays each month. The fourth Sunday service only included Sunday school, Melvin said. Mennonite ministers were unsalaried in those days, so John also worked on the family farm and operated a plumbing business.

Melvin and his siblings walked approximately 1 mile to the Lincoln School. “Our school was one of three schools in Rapho Township named for presidents who were killed in office: Lincoln, McKinley, and Garfield,” noted Melvin. He has good memories of teacher C. Emerson Rohrer instructing the group of 30 to 40 students and of recesses spent playing baseball.

When the local grade schools consolidated in 1951, Melvin said, the Lincoln School building became available to purchase. For one year, the schoolhouse served as the home of Manheim Christian Day School, before the private school moved to its Lebanon Road location.

“Similarly, every gallon of our lemonade and tea that is sold gets 50 gallons of clean drinking water to people in need,” Foltz noted.

Based in Manheim, Humankind is actively involved in projects in Uganda and the Dominican Republic and has worked in Malawi, Tanzania, India, and Haiti in the past.

Humankind has also provided clean water as part of disaster relief efforts in locations including Nepal, Texas, and Flint, Mich.

“While our focus is primarily in meeting international needs, we are more than happy to help locally as needed,” commented Foltz.

For the past four years, the kindHuman Foundation has hosted a fundraising event for the public, but this year organizers have upped the ante and are hosting not one, but two fundraisers, themed “Made For This,” at locations in Lancaster County and Philadelphia.

People will be treated to entertainment by celebrity sand artist Joe Castillo, who appeared on season seven of “America’s Got Talent.” Castillo will present an artistic interpretation of a life

impacted by the efforts of kindHuman. Foltz shared that organizers chose the theme “Made For This” because it speaks to the purpose and ability of all people to be difference makers and impact the world together.

The Lancaster event will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, March 13, at SUPPLY, 280 S. Oak St., Manheim. In addition to entertainment by Castillo, the evening will include an open bar and a buffet dinner catered by Simply From Scratch. Signature cocktails incorporating Humankind beverages will also be served at the bar.

The Philadelphia event is planned for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, at Merion Tribute House, 625 Hazelhurst Ave., Merion Station. Attendees in Philadelphia will experience the same format and entertainment as those at the Lancaster event, with a catered meal from Catering

by Rich.

Five additional meetings are planned for April through August, where club members will participate in a business meeting (run by member-elected club officers), games, service projects, programs/activities and end-ofyear recognition. Choices will include babysitting, beekeeping, cake decorating, canoeing/camping, floral design, photography, rocketry, sewing, and woodworking.

The Lancaster County Conservation District is planning its 46th annual tree seedling sale. All trees and perennials are preordered, and orders are due Monday, March 9. Orders will be ready for pickup during a one-day distribution on Wednesday, April 8, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

DSAA staff and trained volunteers are also available to listen and talk and to point people in the direction of helpful resources.

“The goal here is to make recovery commonplace. Recovery should be expected, because anyone that is struggling with addiction can recover, and it’s becoming easier to find resources,” Emminger shared. Providing a space for connection is an important part of the recovery process, she added, so that people have aftercare when leaving a treatment facility. DSAA aims to offer that as well as consistent support for people with loved ones facing an addiction. Programs centered on

DSAA, which also now stands for Delivering Supportive Approaches to Addiction to encompass the organization’s goal to reach people well beyond the Donegal area, moved into its new space at 78 E. Main St., Mount Joy, on Oct. 1, 2019, and began hosting weekly 12-step yoga sessions and other events for the public.

DSAA is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to noon on Thursdays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Free computer

education, prevention, and awareness are also offered.

Ongoing programs include a Moms in Recovery Coffee Hour from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays and 12-step yoga from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. Children are welcome to join mothers at the coffee hour; however, separate child care is not provided. At yoga, mats are provided. Both programs are free of charge.

The 12-step yoga is led by instructor Kim Stoltzfus, who is registered in Yoga and the 12 Steps of Recovery (Y12SR).

A Family Support Group, open to people of all ages who have a loved one at any stage of addiction, is offered at 1 p.m. on the first and third Mondays of each month and at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month.

Depending on scheduling needs of those interested in attending, times and dates may be adjusted.

Dayspring Christian Academy (DCA), 120 College Ave., Mountville, will host former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee at its next Remember America Speaker Series event on Friday, April 17. The doors to the event venue, the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, will open at 6 p.m., with the pre-meal program beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Gallery seating, for those who will attend only the featured presentation, will open at about 7:20 p.m. A VIP reception with Huckabee will be held prior to the evening’s festivities, with attendance by invitation only. Tickets to the reception are included with event

sponsorship packages starting at the $2,500 level.

The theme for the event is “Living Stones of Liberty … for Such a Time as This.” During the program, DCA fifth-grader Jessie Krieger will give her Headmaster’s Oration Competition-winning oration, titled “Liberty Outdated?”

“Jessie’s title matched well with the Remember America Speaker Series mission,” commented DCA marketing director Lisa Becker.

The event is ex pected to draw 1,500 to 1,600 attendees, certainly the largest audience Jessie has ever faced. “I’m really excited and really nervous all at the same time,” she said.

He described Huckabee as warm and welcoming, noting that those characteristics serve Huckabee well in his role as a pastor. “He’s a great exemplar of (passing on our faith to the next generation), and he can challenge us with credibility,” Myers added. “People tend to listen to him respectfully because he’s respectful.”

The program will also include performances by DCA choral groups led by Lindsey Stauffer. While the singers are primarily in the upper grades, 15 members of the lower school’s Joyful Noise group will join them on stage.

Additionally, a display of artifacts and media from the Faith and Liberty Discovery Center will be available for

attendees to view. The center is opening on Independence Mall in Philadelphia this year and is sponsored by the American Bible Society.

As the April 17 event is marking the 10th anniversary of the Remember America Speaker Series, a special video presentation that includes clips of previous speakers will be part of the program. Becker related that DCA has hosted more than 18,000 people at series events.

“We completely credit God with the ability to walk with the community,” Becker said.

“We’re blessed and grateful that Lancaster has embraced this event and the school,” Myers added.

Church Plans Stephen Ministry Workshop Palm Lutheran Church, 11 W. Cherry St., Palmyra, will host a Stephen Ministry Introductory Workshop on Saturday, March 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and refreshments will be served.

The half-day workshop consists of three sessions designed both to enhance participants’ caregiving skills and to help congregations explore ways to expand their caring ministry. “The needs for ongoing care in congregations and communities are often much more than pastors can handle alone,� said pastor Carl Rabbe, one of four Stephen Leaders who oversee Palm’s Stephen Ministry. “Palm has been enrolled in Stephen Ministry for over 30 years and

has been equipping our members to provide quality one-toone Christian care for decades.�

The workshop is sponsored

by Stephen Ministries, a St. Louis-based Christian organization that has been providing congregations with training and resources for Christian caregiving since 1975. The workshop will be led by Kathy Hollenbeck, a trained Stephen Minister and Leader. Since 2012, Hollenbeck has been a member of the staff at the Stephen Ministries Center in St. Louis, where she is a key member of the operations team. She communicates with pastors and lay leaders, conducting research and providing consultation for their ministry needs. Prior to joining Stephen

Ministries, she, along with her husband and three sons, ministered in Uganda in East Africa for more than 10 years.

In the first session of the workshop, “Ministering to Those Experiencing Grief,� participants will learn about the stages of grief and how to minister to people in each of those stages. Attendees will seek to gain the skills and confidence to better care for individuals who are grieving.

The second session will provide an introduction to the Stephen Series, a system of lay caring ministry through which

congregation leaders can equip members to provide one-to-one Christian care to people in need.

Since 1975, more than 13,000 congregations representing more than 170 denominations have implemented the Stephen Series.

Since 1986, more than 50 members of Palm have undertaken 50 hours of training to become Stephen Ministers.

Palm usually has an average three to five active Stephen Ministers at any given time.

Bentancourt Grabs Fourth District Crown

In the semifinals, Betancourt earned a 1-0 victory against Carlisle’s Rafael Portilla, a now four-time state qualifier. Betancourt could have pushed the action, but Portilla, content to not take any chances, didn’t even shoot in the third. He was hoping Betancourt would make a mistake.

“That didn’t happen,” Chamberlain said.

There was no conservative wrestling in the finals. Betancourt earned a 16-0 technical fall.

Cumberland Valley’s Ruston Dzielak came after Betancourt and 18 seconds into the match Betancourt had him in a bear hug and put him on the mat.

“Will lets other wrestlers dictate the match,” Chamberlain said. “This kid went after it and Will was like, let’s go for it. The CV kid had three pins coming in, but Will was the better wrestler. He was pushing and scoring and that was awesome, because it forced Will to open up and wrestle. It showed him what he can do when he opens up.”

Two other Manheim wrestlers competed in districts. Brett Barbush, 195-pound freshman, met a tough opponent who had previously gone to states. Barbush was pinned at 1:31. To his credit, he fought back and earned two falls in the consolation brackets before suffering another loss.

“He showed a lot of grit to shake off the loss and compete the way he did,” Chamberlain said “He went out free and just wrestled.”

Senior Connor Zeamer lost his two matches at 145 pounds, but even though the tournament didn’t go the way they wanted, Chamberlain said Zeamer is a fighter and doesn’t hold back.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Lady Barons’ season came to an end Tuesday, Feb. 18 in the first round of the Class 5A District tournament.

Manheim, the 11th seed, lost 4235 to sixth-seeded Lower Dauphin, which hosted the game. The Barons started off strong, jumping out to a 13-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. But the Barons went into a scoring slump in the second and third quarters, scoring only four points in the second to trail 21-17 at halftime. They stayed cold in the third quarter, netting only six points to fall behind 3223 after three quarters.

They heated up in the final quarter, outscoring the Falcons 12-10, but it was not enough the close the gap on the final outcome.

Sophomores Rachel Nolt (7.3 average), Summer Bates (2.1) and freshman Abbie Reed (2.8) will return next season. The team scored 1,153 points

this season. They averaged 48 points a game, while yielding 41 per game.

They also made 77 three-pointers this season.

BOWLING Sunday, Feb 16 was the USBC team tournament at Dutch Lanes in Akron.

Junior Catherine Sides and freshmen Jesse Hurst, Ethan Howard and Hailey Kowalski participated.

Kowalski had a 369 series, Sides rolled a team-high 505 series, Howard had a 421 series and Hurst, the team anchor, rolled a 502. The team finished in second place with a score of 2,060, only ten pins out of first place.

“I feel they did well in their first team event bowling together,” Barons’ coach Alan Sides said. “It was good experience for the four of them.”

More than 200 students from school districts and independent schools throughout the region converged on the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center’s (LCCTC) Brownstown, Mount Joy, and Willow Street campuses on Feb. 14 to compete in the District 4 SkillsUSA Competitions. Career and Technology Education students brought their skills, experience, and techniques to take part in dozens of different competition categories from Automotive Skills Technology to Criminal Justice and from Job Interview Skills to Dental Assisting.

The day of competitions culminated at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster, where winners were announced and awards were conferred. The school’s Principle Approach curriculum includes many in-depth field study experiences, including time in Plymouth, Mass., to study the Pilgrims; Boston to study John Adams’ family; Gettysburg; the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter in Kentucky; and New York City. Nearly 40 standholders are slated to participate in the event, and organizer Kris Gray noted that there will be a variety of merchandise for shoppers of all ages and interests.

In addition to yard sale stands, members of the congregation will be running a food stand where people may purchase food including egg sandwiches, homemade chicken corn noodle soup, hot dogs, and baked goods.

Proceeds from standholder donations and food sales will help to fund the missions and ministry activities of the Ruhl’s UMC Sunshine Sunday school class. Gray explained that the Sunshine class organizes and distributes food boxes for local families in need at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. The class also plans and hosts a special banquet for senior citizens at Ruhl’s UMC, sponsors a child through Compassion International, and provides funding for new Bibles to be given away at the God’s Clothing Closet event held at the church each August.

Gage volunteers at his church’s free meal services. He plans to attend college to become an agricultural teacher.

Tenaya, 18, is the daughter of Jeryl and Dorinda Metzler of Manheim. Throughout high school, she has been involved in Baron Stage and ALPHA. She became a member of the National Honor Society and the Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society in her junior year. Additionally, she received the 10th-grade English Award.

auction in her junior year.

Tenaya is a member of White Oak Church of the Brethren and has been a part of multiple youth group activities. After high school, she plans to transfer her Advanced Placement credits, as well as the college credits earned at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, through dual enrollment in her junior and senior years, to Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences. She hopes to complete the college’s two-year Associate Degree in Nursing program, become a licensed RN, and then join the workforce as she completes her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree online.

WATER/WASTEWATER LAB TECHNICIAN Manheim Area Water & Sewer Authority is a Water and Wastewater Authority that offers stable leadership and growth, views employees as valuable resources, and rewards success with competitive pay and benefits.

We are seeking a self-motivated full-time Water and Wastewater Lab Technician to join our team in Manheim, PA and become an integral part of our team. The successful candidate primarily performs routine laboratory analysis and related tasks under the supervision of the Operations Manager.

This position comes with a full benefits package: Health, RX, eye, dental, life insurance, disability insurance, pension, vacation time, paid holidays, etc.

Responsibilities:

Clean and maintain wastewater laboratory and equipment, perform water and wastewater laboratory analysis on process and quality control tests, collect samples from various MAWSA locations, communicate test results to the licensed operators, perform other duties as required; including all MAWSA departments.

Qualifications:

This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, preferable knowledge of chemistry/biology, preferred two year certification related to water/wastewater industry, some experience in a lab setting. The ability to lift and carry 60 pounds and wok under inclement weather conditions are necessary. Candidates must possess reliable transportation, a valid PA driver’s license, and live within 30 minutes of our facilities.

Strong safety awareness and a good record and understanding of safe work practices are essential.
