Fun and fitness with Scottish country dancing Manheim soccer club seeks players
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
At fields in local parks, boys and girls are playing soccer, but they’re actually doing more than that, said Adrian Young, president of the Manheim Soccer Club. “We play soccer, but we want to encourage having fun above all else,” he explained. “We want to encourage teamwork. Soccer is really secondary.”
The club is looking for new kids to join for this season, which will begin in early to mid-March, depending on the weather. The season will run until the first week in June. A fall season will run from
Red Rose Scottish Country Dancers. If you’d like to be a part of an international activity, now’s your chance. The group will hold four weeks of basic classes on Tuesdays from March 7 through 28. The classes will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Manheim Train Station, 210 S. Charlotte St.
early August through the first weekend in November.
The Manheim Soccer Club is open to youths up to age 12. “We have everything from U6 to U12 teams,” Young stated, noting that players as young as 4 years old have joined. “We have intramural, rec and travel levels. We try and make sure we have a spot for any kid who wants to play.” The U6 and U8 teams play against other teams in the club, while the U10 and U12 teams compete in the Lancaster Area Recreational Soccer league. The club is open to both boys and girls, and games are played on Saturdays and Sundays.

Experience is not necessary to play, Young noted, adding that soccer makes a great sport for anyone to try. Soccer, he said, is the most popular sport in the world. “It’s a great way to get some exercise and to learn to be a part of a team,” he commented. “I think every kid should join a team at some point just for the experience of being part of a team.”
In addition to soccer players, Manheim Soccer Club is seeking coaches for every level, Young said, explaining, “We are a volunteer-based club.”
He encourages anyone with an interest in the sport to sign up, either as a player or as a coach. “If you’re looking to get out in the sun and have some fun, there is a place for you,” he remarked.
For more information on the Manheim Soccer Club, call Young at 717-333-0440 or email him at adrian@adrianyoungteam.com. Information on the club is also available on the club’s Facebook page, and a registration link is available at www.manheim soccer.org.
Discussion program planned
The Exploring Growing Together Discussion Forum will hold sessions on Thursdays, March 2, 9, and 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 E. Market St. Participants will gather in Room 103 on the church’s lower level.
Led by Debbie Graffox, the group will discuss “Justice: What’s the
Right Thing To Do?” by Michael J. Sandel. The book, based on a course Sandel has taught at Harvard University, focuses on the role of justice in society and on the moral dilemmas citizens face.
Attendees may bring a lunch to eat during the discussion. Masks are optional for attendees.
In the case of inclement weather, the forum will follow Warwick School District’s schedule. If school is delayed or canceled, the discussion group will not meet.
For more information, contact Linda at 717-626-0745 or raven303@ptd.net.

“You do not need any experience at all to enjoy this,” Leyh stated. “You don’t have to come with a partner. … At the basics class, we’re going to learn the footwork involved with Scottish country dance.” She said the classes will also feature party dances called ceilidh to break the ice. “We’ll use those as warmups for fun to get people moving, and then we’ll learn one of the steps and put it into some easy dances,” she explained. Members of the Red Rose Scottish Country Dancers teach reels and jigs, which are fast dances, as well as strathspeys, which are slower dances.
Leyh has been involved in Scottish country dancing since she saw a demonstration more than 25 years ago in Elizabethtown. “I fell in love with it,” she recalled. “I thought, ‘Wow! I want to do this!’” She joined a group in Harrisburg, but when the group realized a lot of the members were making the drive from Lancaster, someone suggested they start a local group. “They appointed me to do that, and I thought, ‘Well, we’ll give it a go. It won’t work,’” she said with a laugh. “Our club actually marked our 25th anniversary during COVID.”
Leyh said she loves many things about Scottish country dancing. “It’s a neat activity, it’s fun and social, and it’s great exercise. It’s really good mental and physical exercise,” she noted, adding that she has participated in workshops and dances throughout the region as well as in other parts of the world. “We are a very hospitable group. You always know you’re welcome.”
Leyh emphasized Manheim is a particularly cool place to try Scottish country dancing, because the region was settled by Scots. “This is part of our heritage,” she stated. “Scots have always done this type of dancing.” All of the dances taught by the Red Rose Scottish Country Dancers come from books published by the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, and new dances are written every year.
“I like to encourage young people to come out and try this,” Leyh commented. “It’s a nice way to meet other young people with a common interest. ... Everyone should give it a try. If you like music, if you like moving, getting some exercise and meeting new people, come join us. It takes a while to get really comfortable with it, but we’re patient.”
Participants should wear soft-soled shoes and wear a mask to classes. For more information or to register for classes, call Leyh at 717-615-7511.

The boys’ basketball team will be playing for their first ever LancasterLebanon League Title after topping Cedar Crest 49-46 in their L-L semifinal clash that took place February 15th at Conestoga Valley. The two sides played nearly even-up through three quarters with the Falcons holding a slim 33-31 lead. Central turned it on down the
stretch, posting an 18-13 edge in the final frame to collect the 49-46 victory.
Trey Grube posted a team high 16 with Aaron Enterline adding 13 points.
Central earned their semifinal slot with a 59-56 thriller over Octorara on the 13th. The Barons opened hot, jumping out to a 21-13 lead after the first. Octorara began their slow climb back in the second with a 14-13 edge and took a few big steps
in the third with a 15-12 advantage. The Braves posted another 14-13 edge in the fourth, leaving Central holding a three-point win.
Manheim’s final regular season game took place February 9th with the Barons topping Warwick 65-56. Central used Grube’s 27-point game to take control early, their 31-22 halftime cushion able to withstand Warwick’s 14-8 run through the third frame. Manheim Central regrouped heading into the final quarter leading to a 2620 edge and the 65-56 final. Zach Benner netted 13 points as the only other
Baron in double digits.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Twenty wins in a high school basketball season is quite a feat with only a handful of programs reaching the marker each season. The Lady Barons are one of those squads this season, using a 56-22 thrashing of LampeterStrasburg in the Lancaster-Lebanon League quarterfinals to improve to 20-3 on the year. The victory was not only Central’s 20th of the season, it was also their 14th in a row, quite a feat in its own right.
Manheim took control of the game over the middle two frames, outscoring L-S 32-10, turning a 9-6 game into a 4116 romp. The Lady Barons did not let up, posting a 15-6 run through the fourth to set the 56-22 final.
Maddie Knier collected a game high 28, including a staggering 13 of Manheim’s 17 second quarter points.
Kaylie Kroll just made the double-digit club with 10 points.
What took Manheim Central nearly seven weeks to build, came to an end on February 14th when the Lady
Barons dropped their LL semifinal game with Columbia by a 51-29 final. Columbia controlled from the opening whistle putting Manheim in a 15-3 hole after the first. The deficit grew to 33-10 at the break and 47-19 heading into the final quarter. Manheim was able to post a 10-4 edge in the final frame to trim the deficit a bit to 51-59.
Knier netted a team high 16, putting her at 1933 points for her career leaving her just shy of Hilary Waltman’s program record 1937 points.
Manheim Central closed out the regular season back on February 9th, topping Warwick by a 59-38 final. The Lady Barons were fueled by Knier’s 32 points which split nicely by halves, 18 and 13. Central opened an eight-point lead in the first but really got going with a 17-5 second quarter run, sparked by Knier’s 14 point frame. A nearly even second half put the final at 59-38.
BOWLING
The bowling team had their L-L title dreams dashed in the quarterfinals where they dropped their match opposite Ephrata by a 2-1 final.
RIFLE
After finishing the regular season in a three-way tie for first place with Ephrata and Manheim Township the rifle team headed to Conestoga Valley on February 11th for the LancasterLebanon League Individual Tournament. The Barons managed to place two shooters in the top 25, led by Nate Sauder and his 8th place tally of 199 and one center. Genna Eberly ended up 21st after shooting a 197 with three centers. The L-L also handed out All-Star nods, awarding the 10 highest averages over the course of the regular season. Sauder was one of those AllStars, finishing with a 99.1 average.
SWIMMING
The Manheim Central swimmers, along with the rest of the LancasterLebanon League descended on Wil-
son High School February 10th and 11th for the 2022-2023 edition of the League Championship Meet.
Just one Lady Baron participated but Ashley Mellinger came home with a gold and a silver medals for her work.
“She swam well, improving her times,” said head coach Heather Fittery. “We are looking forward to seeing what she can do at the District meet.”
Mellinger’s gold came in the 100 butterfly where the freshman clocked a 57.94, nipping Garden Spot’s Kayla Parry by 0.29 seconds. Mellinger’s silver came in the 200 IM where her 2:09.04 was just over a second off Mia Perry of Garden Spot.
The boy’s team made their lone podium trip during Friday’s festivities, with Anderson Pilsner, Chase Kirchner, Bryce Steach and Bryce Garber combining for a 1:50.20 in the 200 medley relay, the seventh fastest time of the day. That same quartet accounted for seven of the Baron’s 10 individual events.
Pilsner finished 14th in the 200IM (2:15.22) and 12th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.25. Garber was just off Pilsner’s pace in the 100 backstroke, finishing in 13th with a 59.26. Garber’s other solo race was the 50 freestyle where his 23.50 slotted him 11th.
Chase Kirchner also took part in two solo events, finishing 18th in the 100 butterfly (1:03.47) and 25th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.91. Steach turned in a 1:00.42 in the 100 butterfly, good enough for 15th place.
Avery Kirchner ended up 16th in the 500 freestyle with a 5:30.07, and Ryan Moreno took part in Manheim’s final solo event, placing 24th in the 100 freestyle.
The Baron’s 400 freestyle relay team posted a 3:56.14, leaving Avery Kirchner, Moreno, Caleb Bower, and Chase Kirchner in the 10th position. Pilsner, Avery Kirchner, Steach and Garber finished 11th in the 200 freestyle relay, posting a 1:40.70
“We had a great weekend of swims,” added Fittery.

“Hello, Dolly!” frompg 5
Dolly also solves romantic problems plaguing Ermengarde Kemper, played by Jada Correll, and Ambrose Kemper, played by Lincoln Everett.
In the end, Dolly provides Horace Vandergelder, played by Steve Rau, with a suitable wife as well. The cast of more than 25 will also feature Jess Zeidler as Ernestina.
“‘Hello, Dolly!’ is a spectacular show,” said Burton, who noted Cavod Theatre was in a good position to stage the dance-heavy musical because Cavod Performing Arts trains dancers. “We have been able to utilize their strengths,” she said. Burton noted that large numbers including “Before the Parade Passes By,” “Put on Your Sunday Clothes,” and “Hello, Dolly!” call for families and townspeople in the ensemble. Both Amy Rau and Burton said they were blessed to see lots of teens and children at auditions.
Amy said that the songs themselves are joyful and memorable. “You cannot listen to ‘Put on Your Sunday Clothes’ without smiling ear-to-ear,” she said. “The music is so much fun.”
“You leave singing these songs,” added Burton, who is also enjoying working with the cast members practicing the Broadway classic. “The seasoned leads are thrilled to have the opportunity to play these iconic roles, and we are getting to teach the younger ones about this historic show.”
Tickets, which are discounted for students, may be purchased at ww.cavod.org, by emailing info@cavod.org, or by calling 717354-3355.

PUBLIC AUCTION
Not easily broken
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Dayspring Christian Academy’s Remember America Speaker Series team makes decisions based in prayer and with reverence to Scripture. The choice of three speakers for this year’s event is rooted in Ecclesiastes 4:12, which reads in part, “A three-ply cord is not easily broken.”
Selection to include Pottery & Stoneware, China, Glassware, Folk-Art & Woodenware, Trade Signs, Miscellaneous, Furniture, Artwork, Metalware, Rugs. 717-664-5238 • 877-599-8894
“Our team started thinking about how our school is in partnership with parents and churches in educating our children,” said Lisa Becker, events manager with Dayspring, which is located in Mountville. That threestrand cord of family, church, and education became the basis for this year’s banquet, with a speaker chosen to represent each of the three strands.
The 2023 Remember America Speaker Series banquet will be held at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 29. The featured speakers will be author and Fox News host Pete Hegseth, speaking on education; actor Kirk Cameron, speaking on family; and worship leader Sean Feucht, speaking on the role of the church.
Hegseth came to the attention of the Dayspring team when a school staff member read his book “Battle for the American Mind: Uprooting a Century of Miseducation.” Dayspring headmaster Dan Stone explained that the first community schools in America were instituted for the purpose of teaching children to read in order that they might learn from the Word of God.
“In a Christian society … the community schools taught Christian values,” said Stone, who added that changes in education began to occur in the 20th century. Hegseth’s book outlines those changes and proposes classical Christian education as a remedy. “As a Principle Approach school, there are elements of classical education (at Dayspring),” noted Stone.
Cameron is well-known for his part in the sitcom “Growing Pains” and for several family-focused films. Most recently, Cameron’s “American Campfire Revival” has encouraged the family of faith to embrace principles that may bring blessing to America.
Feucht is a worship leader, author, and missionary. “When it comes to the church, few voices have been as loud in calling God’s people to engage the culture and redeem it for Christ,” said Stone.
“It all ties together,” said Becker of the three speakers. “The mission of the Remember America Speaker Series is to remind Americans of their unique heritage of liberty that was founded upon biblical principles. We felt that a three-strand cord is one we wanted to illuminate … to bring people together.”
Dayspring senior Caroline Hostetter of Pequea Township will also present her winning oratory, “America: A Legacy of Honor and Liberty,” at the banquet.
Tickets to the event may be purchased at www.DayspringChristian .com. Readers who wish to sponsor a table may call 717-285-2000, ext. 211.
