Lititz To Host Ice Walk

The town of Lititz is known for a festival that is normally held in mid-February, but Holly DeKarske, executive director of Venture Lititz, wants to make it clear that the event that will happen in downtown Lititz from Friday, Feb. 12, through Saturday,

Feb. 20, is not that event.

“We are not calling it Fire & Ice because it’s not (that),” said DeKarske, who made it clear that Fire & Ice will not be held for 2021.

Instead, it will be replaced by the 2021 Lititz Ice Walk, which will include more than 50 ice sculptures and extended hours at many stores and restaurants.

Lititz’s 2021 Ice Walk will feature more than 50 ice sculptures for visitors to see from Feb. 12 through 20.

Drive-Through Meal To Benefit Retirement Community n Saturday, Feb. 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community will offer a curbside pickup meal as a fundraiser for the residence. The pickup will take place at the LCBC Manheim Campus, 2392 Mount Joy Road. The snow date for the event will be Saturday, March 6.

The meal includes chicken from Peters’ Barbecue, gourmet cheese potatoes, sweet and sour saucy green beans, applesauce, a dinner roll with butter and dessert. Proceeds will benefit the facility, which provides skilled nursing and rehabilitation care for seniors regardless of their ability to pay.

“ With a passion to serve seniors with lower incomes, Mount Hope is home to 50 residents who need nursing care,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement. “Most seniors at Mount Hope do not have financial resources to cover the cost of their care. A gap of approximately $150 exists between what a senior is able to pay and the cost of their daily care.”

The drive-through meal provides a way not only to support seniors, but also to serve a warm meal in a dreary season, Wilson noted.

“Mount Hope has not done a large banquet-type drive-through meal before this, but I thought up the idea because winter tends to be very cold and gray - the ‘winter

blues’ - and people might not feel totally comfortable yet with going out to a restaurant for dining,” she explained. “This is a safe option and a nice way to help support a local nonprofit and of course enjoy some wonderful home-cooked Lancaster County comfort food on a cold winter day.”

This year has been particularly difficult on residents of Mount Hope, Wilson remarked, adding that the retirement community continues to look for creative ways to cover the unanticipated increased cost of safely providing care.

Not only will proceeds from the meal help seniors continue to stay at Mount Hope, but the money will also cover additional expenses.

On Jan. 27, a devastating fire ripped through Christine and Jeffrey Polynone’s house at 35 Cider Press Road in Manheim.

Although the couple managed to escape, the house was destroyed.

Now, their daughter Michelle Levengood is organizing a fundraiser to help the couple rebuild and recover.

“I grew up in that house,” said Levengood, who has three siblings. “It was a total loss. They were able to get out with the dog, but one of their cats died in the fire. The other was seriously burned and is in the care of W hite Oaks Veterinary Hospital.”

The Polynones are lifelong residents of the Manheim area. They did not have insurance on their home. “My mother tried to get homeowner’s insurance, but they wouldn’t cover her because of the heating source in the home,” Levengood explained. “She also tried to get renter’s insurance, but she was denied.”

Jeffrey, who has colon cancer, is on disability.

Christine works for the United States Postal Service. “My mom and dad are very humble people,” Levengood stated. “They are not the type of people to ask for handouts or donations.

They would give the shirt off their backs for someone.

I just wanted to do something to help them out.”

She set a goal of $100,000 to help her parents build a new home, even though her parents resisted asking for help. At press time, her GoFundMe page had raised close to $5,000. She also created a Venmo account to accept monetary donations, and she said she’s been overwhelmed by community support for her parents.

“There have been so many people who have supported this, whether they are donating money or household items or just sending prayers,” she said. Although donations of items are appreciated, she noted that she currently has nowhere to store them, so she is looking for monetary donations instead.

Levengood is the chief operations officer of Mako Construction in Palmyra, and the company donated its excavation services to clean up the site of the fire.

The Red Cross donated money to help the couple with clothing, food and toiletries.

Currently, Jeffrey and Chrstine are staying with Levengood’s sister in Mount Joy, but they are looking for a more permanent solution.

“They are pretty much homeless right now,” Levengood noted. “They need to

find a place to live while they raise money to rebuild, and it needs to be a place that’s pet friendly.”

Losing everything in the fire has been devastating for the family, she stated.

“My mom had items from my pop-pop, who served in Vietnam. There were things that are irreplaceable,” she said. “We’re taking this day by day and just trying to keep looking ahead.”

Church To Offer Free Chili, Soup Ruhl’s United Methodist Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, will offer free chili and bacon corn chowder soup for takeout on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 10 a.m. to noon or until the food runs out.

The chili and the bacon corn chowder soup will be homemade in the church kitchen. The chili recipe is mild, not hot and spicy.

Refrigerated soup will be distributed in takeout containers, and community members may drive up to the carport to pick up the food. It will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, so no reservations are needed. Pint and quart

containers will be available depending on family size, and there will be a twoquart maximum per vehicle to enable the church to bless more people. The purpose of the event is to share the love of Jesus.

The church previously held a soup takeout event in January and gave away all 175 quarts of chicken corn noodle soup in 30 minutes. The church is planning for more attendees at the upcoming event.

A free takeout ham dinner is being planned for Saturday, March 27. Reservations will be required, and details will be announced later.

School Sets Open Houses Hershey Christian Academy, located at New Life Church of Hershey, 99 Valley Road, Hummelstown, will host open houses for families that are looking for a Christ-centered private school in the Hershey area.

Open houses will be available on Saturday, Feb. 20,

from 1 to 3 p.m. and on Monday, March 15, from 9 a.m. to noon.

DriveThrough Spaghetti Dinner Planned Faith United Methodist Church, 1290 Fruitville Pike, Lititz, invites the public to its first-ever drive-through spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Sunday, Feb. 14, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Attendees may drive into the church parking lot, where they will be met by masked and gloved team members.

Minimal-contact and no-contact dinner pickup options will be available. Each meal will include spaghetti, meat or plain sauce, salad, bread, a sweet treat, and a beverage.

There will also be gluten-free options. In honor of Valentine’s Day, flowers and candlelight will be added to the meal as well.

The Ice Walk will include a variety of sculpted creations.

The plan is to place interactive pieces near the Lititz Springs Park and the Lititz Post Office, with these pieces interspersed with smaller pieces that families can visit as they stroll through Lititz.

“There will be a couple of the larger sculptures that are carved in place on display by Feb. 12,” said DeKarske.

“They will be there as long as Mother Nature allows.”

Smaller pieces, which will be carved before delivery, will be brought by freezer truck from DiMartino Ice Company of Jeannette. DeKarske will have a freezer truck available in Lititz to hold those so they can be gradually placed. “On the one block, we will put out some at the beginning, and every couple days we will add more,” explained DeKarske, who has arranged for a group of volunteers to place the

Lady Barons Upend Lancaster Catholic

Tyson Hayes is enjoying the ride.

As head coach of the Manheim Central girls’ basketball team, he has watched his team take its lumps and grow from losses last year. Now they are seeing the fruits of their labor.

The latest success came in a 4847 home win against Lancaster Catholic on Saturday, Jan. 30. The victory is memorable, as it broke the Crusaders’ 46-game winning streak against Lancaster-Lebanon League opponents.

Central’s super-sophomore Maddie Knier hit a jumper with 1:25 left in the game to put Manheim ahead.

Knier also had a late blocked shot to help secure the win.

After trailing 24-23, Manheim built a 37-29 third quarter lead, behind four 3-pointers in the quarter.

Abbie Reed had 13 points and Rachel Nolt added 10 in a back-inforth contest.

“Yeah, it was a good one from start to finish,” Hayes said. “Just unbelievably proud of the team; they’ll have a memory that those eight can share for a lifetime.

“We consistently made plays in the biggest moments, whether it was getting a stop, hitting a big shot, or getting a rebound when we had to have it. They also never shrunk in big moments throughout the game. We kept our composure and never panicked. They are buying in and are getting better every night. It’s going be a fun ride with this team.”

Central beat Garden Spot, 48-28 on Feb. 3. Hayes said the team is coming into its own, fighting on every possession and buying into their roles.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL The Central boys lost to a talented Lancaster Catholic squad, 60-43 Jan. 30 in Lancaster.

Catholic led 8-7 after the first quarter and pulled away late in the second to take a 23-14 lead at intermission. The Crusaders stretched the lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Barons 25-14 behind strong defense and key rebounds that led to easy transition points on offense.

“We knew what we were getting into,” Barons’ coach Charlie Fisher said. “They never let us get into a groove. We cut it to two late in the second quarter and then they went up nine in like a blink of an eye. That really hurt. We were ready for the transition, but we ran out of gas a little bit. I wasn’t thinking we’d run out of gas in the second quarter.”

The Barons missed five straight three-point attempts in the third, which led to fast breaks the other direction. Fisher said they had a game plan and didn’t quite follow that plan.

“That’s the problem when you shot a lot of threes,” he said, “if they aren’t going in, it’s tough to beat. I thought our guys played really hard. I thought they played aggressive. I thought they did everything right. We let it get away too soon. You have to keep it close.”

Cam Eberly had a team-high 10 points, Collin Thompson and Matt Siegrist each added 6.

Siegrist hit a 3-pointer with 6:30 left in the third to make it 27-17 Catholic, but the Crusaders went on a 14-4 run to lead 41-21 with 1:40 remaining in the quarter.

The Barons bounced back to beat Garden Spot, 61-45 on Feb. 3. MC trailed 27-13 before rallying for the win. Trey Grube had a team-high 19 points. Eberly added 12 and Zachary Benner had 10.

WRESTLING Manheim competed in a trimeet, beating Octorara 38-32 and losing to Cocalico 60-7 Jan. 30.

Uriah Warner bumped up to 138 pounds from his normal 132 weight and earned a major decision to secure the win for Manheim over Octorara.

“He never stopped looking for points and wrestled tough the entire time,” Barons’ coach Billy Chamberlain said. “He never gave the kid an opportunity to be in the match.”

As a senior, Barbush is leading by example.

“Gabe is showing the ability to listen and try new things,” Chamberlain said. “Brett Barbush is a leader and is always looking to score and be dominate,” Chamberlain said. “It is nice to see all his hard work paying off.”

BOWLING The Barons lost 7-0 to Cedar Crest at Canes Lanes Jan. 28. They lost game one 955-824, game two 850-762 and game three 938-658.

Jesse Hurst had a match-high 613 on games of 211-215-187.

Freshman Holly Hunt rolled a 167-151-139 for a 457 triple.

Freshman Landon Statts had a 139-121-152 for a three-game 412. Sophomore Hailey Kowalski had a 391 series with her highgame being a 163 and senior Cole Shontz had a 371 with his highgame being a 144.

SWIMMING On the road, the boys swimming team lost to LampeterStrasburg 95-55 and the girls lost to the Pioneers 137-26 on Jan. 28. Overall, Barons’ coach Heather Fittery said the kids swam well.

The 400 freestyle relay team, consisting of Bode Sipel, Owen Kupres, Paetyn Knepp and Mason Weaver posted a winning time of 4:15.01. Finn Schmidhuber took 2nd in 200 free with a good time of 2:25.52, Fittery said.

RIFLE The Barons swept a double header, nipping Elizabethtown 870-868 in its home match and 494-486 in the away match.

At home, Anna Haldeman had a perfect 100 score. Kami Groff fired a 98 and Trevor Frey, Gabby Fittery and Nate Sauder all posted a 97. Ellie McCabe, Rodney Sauder each had 96. Kyler Groff fired a 95 and Genna Eberly notched a 94.

The way match saw Groff, Haldeman, McCabe and Nate Souder all register a 99. A new name in the top 5, Eric Kreider, had a 98. Manheim coach Steve Waddington emphasized that every score counts.

The away match went better, he said, emphasizing that they were lucky to get the win in the home match as their score was less than stellar.

“You don’t normally win when you shot (that low),” he said.

“This was just enough to tie this match.” Forcing MC to go to its 6th shooter, who tied E-Town’s sixth shooter. The same was true with the Barons’ seventh and

eighth shooters tying. It all came down to the ninth-ranked shooter on both teams. Fortunately, Manheim had the better ninth and final score shot in Nate Sauder.

“It is a lesson that every shot in the match might just count,” Waddington said. “Anna Haldeman and Kami Groff shot well in

both of the matches. Freshman Nathan Sauder has been also showing great promise along with twin brother, Rodney, and underclassmen Genna Eberly, Kyle Groff, Gabby Fittery, Riley Sauder, and Natalia Winkler. I feel they are all showing improvement.”

BRK Announces Fecik’s Retirement

Friends In Action Intl. staff members gathered for a meeting in July 2018.

Headquartered in Middletown, Friends In Action Intl. has spent more than 25 years assisting missionaries in remote locations with infrastructure projects that help the Gospel reach indigenous people groups. The organization is seeking additional volunteer staff and other volunteers in multiple areas. Open positions include human resource director; communication assistant; missionary partners to Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, and West Africa; Spanish-speaking liaison to Bolivia work teams; work team leaders to Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, and Bolivia; and full-time shipping personnel.

Currently, FIA is at work in six countries on 10 projects.

From water projects in West Africa and Vanuatu to hurricane-rebuilding efforts in Nicaragua and Vanuatu, FIA serves close to a quarter of a

million people each year.

In 2020, the organization provided construction assistance to over 1,200 people in Vanuatu and Nicaragua. In addition, the nonprofit sent medical or food/water provisions to close to 8,000 people from Bolivia, Moldova, West Africa, Papua New Guinea, and Vanuatu. More than 225,000 people had a chance to hear the Gospel, many of them for the first time, through the organization’s outreaches.

Over 80% of FIA’s headquarters’ staff are volunteer or privately funded so more donated dollars can go directly to projects and indigenous villagers.

B.R. Kreider & Son Inc. (BRK), an excavating, paving and site management company based in Manheim and Quarryville, recently announced the retirement of Michael Fecik, executive vice president and CFO, effective on Friday, Jan. 29.

Fecik joined BRK in 1996 as controller. In 2000, he was promoted to vice president of finance. From 2005 through 2014, he held the dual roles of president and CFO. Since 2015, he has acted as both executive vice president and CFO. In addition, Fecik navigated BRK through the challenging economic landscape of the years leading up to 2010 and earned the Turnaround Specialist Award in 2015 from Pennsylvania financial industry leaders.

His analytical skills enabled BRK to maintain a high level of customer service while preserving employee jobs.

Fecik is a member of the Airplane Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), a member of the national Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA), a member of the Elizabethtown Family Business Center CEO Group, assistant treasurer of Pennsylvania Dutch Council of Boy Scouts of America and treasurer for the Lancaster International Piano Festival.

A graduate of Spring Garden College in Philadelphia, Fecik is a member of St. John Neumann Church and resides in Manheim Township with his wife, Deborah. Resources offered by YNC’s three partners means a continuum of care when a patient living in the greater community is ready to come on campus. “Sometimes we are just going in to provide that support until the person is ready to move,” explained Kiralfy, adding that having a relationship with the patient and his or her family can help start a conversation about or ease a transition to a higher level of care.

The advent of COVID-19 has affected safety protocols for in-home care. “We have tried to mitigate that risk factor by not crossing over caregivers from different campuses and limiting the number of caregivers that see a client,” said Kiralfy. “A lot of folks want to stay in their homes. (To help them) to do that safely, we are making the appropriate modifications for those folks.”

At a time when aging in place has become a focus for the elderly, three entities in the Lititz and Manheim areas have come together to provide in-home care. “We are using our continuum background to support those who want to age in place to make sure they’re doing that safely,” said Leanne Kiralfy, executive director of Your Neighborhood Connection (YNC), a home care agency that was formed by the collaboration of Luthercare and Moravian Manor of Lititz in 2015 and recently added partner Pleasant View Communities of Manheim.

COVID-19 has created a larger niche for in-home care, and Kiralfy noted that YNC is qualified to offer necessary services on and off the three campuses. “ We don’t only serve clients on campus, but we reach out and serve the greater community as well,” she noted.

“That’s our mission.”

YNC, which is located at 706 Rothsville Road, Lititz, offers a variety of services ranging from companion

care to end-of-life support, as well as licensed practical nurses who can administer medications and treatments.

Kiralfy noted that with inhome safety as a priority, companion services may include helping with meals, meal planning, going to the grocery store, light housekeeping, checking mail, bed linen changes, and laundry.

Personal care services include dressing, grooming, and bathing. “We work hand in hand with some cases that involve hospice,” said Kiralfy, noting that hospice services may stay with a patient for a limited amount of time, but additional caregivers can make it possible for people to stay in their homes at the end of life. Memory issues are a factor for many clients, so safety evaluations are part of protocol and partners located on the three campuses may be consulted. “Our partners have been in business more than 100 years combined, so we have those resources to pull from,” shared Kiralfy, who noted that choosing which caregivers to place with which clients and offering additional dementia,

In the last month we have gotten takeout at least five times, ordered two DIY breakfasts, and got our Christmas dinner there. It is our new favorite,� said Toni Hershey. “I have also really enjoyed sharing places we love with the group and making sure longtime favorites - like Sushi One keep getting business.� “Thanks to this site, I’ve discovered a lot of new

favorite restaurants that I have been driving by for years - Gracie’s and Three Sisters Park (in Ephrata) to name two,� Deb Gifford commented. “I just love how this has been such a positive group to work together and help local businesses and their employees,� Christine Cipoletti said. “I have tried new restaurants and some that I hadn’t known about. This is such a useful Facebook page.�

Business owners have commented to Volker that the group has made a positive impact on their businesses, especially for caterers who have been able to transition from preparing food for events to food for families.

Although the orders now state that restaurants may partially open for indoor dining, Volker believes that takeout will be a major part of their business plans. “The landscape of the restaurant industry has changed, permanently,� she suggested. “Takeout’s not going anywhere. People are used to eating in the comfort of their homes now.� “Lancaster County Take Out� is a public group, and new members are always welcome.

Effort Aims To Provide Support United Way of Lancaster County (UWLC) will launch Share OUR Stimulus, a fund for stimulus check donations to be distributed to individuals who have experienced setbacks due to COVID-19.

Inspired by the national campaign Share the Stimulus, UWLC will facilitate donations to be given as a onetime gift to people who apply for assistance through www.uwlanc.org/stimulus.

“With capacity limitations this year, Lititz is hoping nearby towns will be able to help with offering food, entertainment and lodging,” he stated. “Manheim wants to help fill that need, and we at Horst Arts are doing our part.”

Main St., Manheim. “Say It With Paper is a couples-only event that involves creating a fun word or image on a 9-by-12inch hangable board using scraps of paper, glue and stencils,” said Jason Horst, owner of Horst Arts.

“Our String Art Date Night is also a couples-only event that has each of you trying your hand at classic string art using a board, nails, string and templates, while each couple enjoys individual chocolate fondue at their table,” he explained.

On Sunday, Feb. 14, Horst Arts will offer Galentine’s Junk Journal at 3 p.m. “Our Galentine’s event, on Valentine’s Day, involves creating a junk journal that contains special pockets, decorative papers, envelopes, buttons, etc., that can be used for recipes, as a travel log or any number of purposes,” Horst said. “Galentine’s celebrations are for ladies and their friends to celebrate friendship. Traditionally it’s for those not in relationships, but our event is open to any lady - as long as they don’t bring their significant other.”

Matt Musser, CPA, has returned to United Zion Retirement Community as its chief financial officer. During the last several years, Musser was the controller at Community Action Partnership and then the controller at Mennonite Home.

Prior to that, Musser was the controller at United Zion and a senior manager at Baker Tilly. He is a Cocalico High School graduate and received his bachelor’s degree in finance and accounting from Millersville University.

Musser said that employment in senior living communities gives his work a strong sense of purpose as he can see the impact it makes on the lives of the residents. He noted that he likes the small community atmosphere because it allows him to get to know the residents and staff. Musser’s aims at United Zion include ensuring the organization’s long-term financial viability.
