50 Years Of Helping Small Hands Zion Lutheran Preschool Marks Anniversary By Chelsea Peifer

This school year marks the 50th anniversary of Zion Lutheran Preschool, which Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church launched in 1969 in the education wing of its facility at 2 S. Hazel St., Manheim. Lifelong church member Donna Rhodes explained that the vision for the preschool came from two women. Sylvia Miller and the late Dolores Sachs were instrumental in establishing Zion Lutheran Preschool after seeing the need

for another program to serve children in the Manheim community. Originally, classes were offered only for 4-year-olds, but the program was a success and quickly expanded to make room for 3-year-olds in the following years. The late Darlene Rambler was the third person whom Rhodes recalled staffing the preschool along with Miller and Sachs. Other women from the church got involved too as the program grew, including Rhodes, who began as a volunteer teacher’s assistant before eventually becoming a paid assistant. From 1987 to 2010, Rhodes served as director at Zion Lutheran Preschool. See Zion Preschool pg 2

Transforming Plastic Bags Into Mats Of Love

Celebrate The Mystery! By Chelsea Peifer

By Chelsea Peifer

Cindi Selph set out to learn how to crochet after having a conversation with a friend about people who crochet plastic bags into sleeping mats. “I went online and got inspired by all of the YouTube videos,” recalled Selph. With sewing and knitting skills already under her belt, Selph was able to quickly teach herself how to crochet the plastic bag yarn more commonly referred to simply as “plarn.” Selph reached out to Mount Joy Helping Services to see if there might be a need for the 4-by-6-foot plarn sleeping mats See Mats Of Love pg 3

Holding up two sleeping mats crafted from plastic bags are Mats of Love participants (from left) Heather Anderson, Mary Brubaker, Mary Rost, and Cindi Selph. Members of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Mount Joy and the local community meet regularly to create the mats, which are then distributed to people experiencing homelessness.

The year is 1944. The Second Great War is raging on throughout Europe and in the Pacific, and Americans back home are doing everything within their power to support those serving abroad. The enigmatic owner of the Mount Hope Estate is funding a USO tour to help brighten spirits on the Pacific front, but danger is lurking at the estate. That is the setting for the mystery soon to unfold and be solved at this year’s Murder at Mount Hope Mansion, a now-annual zfundraising event planned by the Friends of Manheim Community Library.

The Friends invite the community to enjoy an interactive dinner theater experience at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, at Mount Hope Mansion, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim. A four-course meal will be served, and then guests will assemble in the mansion’s Theater Room for a time of interrogation and comedy. See Library pg 5
