The World War II Oral History Club will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. at St. Anne’s Retirement Community, 3952 Columbia Ave., Columbia. The club will welcome Lancaster County resident Rosette Lobel, a Holocaust survivor. Lobel was born in France and grew up under Hitler’s regime during the five-year Nazi occupation. The club meets at St. Anne’s on the last Tuesday of each month except December. All WWII veterans and family members, as well as those who have an interest in WWII history, are invited to attend.

Servant Stage will kick off the new year with concert titled “A Million Dreams: Songs of Inspiration.” The original revue will showcase vocals, tight harmonies, and original arrangements of a wide variety of uplifting songs, ranging from Broadway and pop tunes to sacred songs and spirituals.

“It’s a diverse program, but each song has an encouraging or inspirational theme,” said Servant Stage executive director Johnathan Bauer. “This is a great show to beat the winter blues.

The arrangements, vocals, and harmonies are just exquisite, and the costumes are gorgeous.”

The cast includes Lancaster performers Ric Zimmerman, Sarah Poague, and Kat Prickett as featured vocalists, with Kayla Klase as female vocalist - swing.

Mount Joy Minnie To Return For Quirky Tradition

In the 10 years that Mount Joy Minnie has been popping up out of her tree stump on Feb. 2 to predict either a welcome early spring or six more blasted weeks of winter, the groundhog has been correct eight out of 10 times, according to Minnie’s “handler,” Nancy Shonk.

“She just has that feeling,” Shonk said. “She’s competing with the big boys, so she has to be pretty accurate.”

The “big boys” are, of course, the famous Punxsutawney Phil and Lancaster County’s own Octorara Orphie, who rarely agree on a winter forecast.

Minnie was Lancaster County’s first (and only) female groundhog, thanks to the vision of the late Bob Myers, an eccentric, fun-loving Mount Joy businessman who hosted Minnie’s first Groundhog Day appearance in 2008.

After Myers died unexpectedly in July 2008, the festivities were put on hold the following February. Trinity Lutheran Church, 47 W. Main St., Mount Joy, will hold its 11th annual clothing giveaway and community meal on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The event is open to anyone who is in need of clothing. No one is turned away, and there are no qualifications to participate. Organizers ask that participants take clothing that is needed and be respectful of others in attendance. The doors will open at 9 a.m.; no early-bird shopping will be permitted.

Event organizers noted that the clothing giveaway serves two purposes: It is a way for church members to answer the call to serve and take care of others, and it also helps to promote a “reduce, reuse, recycle” lifestyle.

All sizes of clothing will be available, with items for newborns through adults.

In previous years, the event has offered coats of all sizes, as well as men’s and women’s suits. Organizers also hope to have a selection of accessories available, as well. They are accepting donations of any item that helps to complete an outfit, including shoes.

The church is accepting donations from the community of new and gently used clothing. Donations may be dropped

In previous years, church members have served 350 people at the community meal. Event organizers noted that Trinity Lutheran Church’s congregation is committed to finding ways to help and serve the community, and the church also supports the Mount Joy Food Bank and the Donegal Power Packs Project.

Members of the congregation support the clothing giveaway and community meal in a variety of ways, including by donating clothing and baked goods, sorting and organizing donations, and helping on the day of the event.

The annual event is organized and supervised by Trinity’s congregational members and friends. The church’s BOLD Youth Group begins sorting and organizing donations on the Wednesday evening before the event, and adults and youths work steadily for the following two days to ensure that everything is categorized by gender and size.

Items will be placed throughout the church building. Items for men and women will be located downstairs, and shoes, coats, and children’s items will be located upstairs. Stationed throughout the church to offer direction and assistance to sale attendees will be volunteers wearing name tags and T-shirts that state “Live Generously.”

Trinity’s Fellowship Committee will organize and supervise the community meal that will take place on the same day.

Serving will be from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and meals will be available to eat in or take out. The menu will include ham, mashed potatoes, baked corn,

Senior Living at Mount Joy

The annual LancasterLebanon Music Educators Association (LLMEA) County Chorus Festival will take place on Saturday, Feb. 2, at Donegal High School, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. Students from Lancaster and Lebanon counties auditioned to take part. More than 200 students will participate, rehearse all day, and then perform a concert for the public in the evening.

This year, nine Donegal students successfully auditioned and will participate.

The concert will begin at 5:30 p.m. Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for students.

Dr. Anthony T. Leach will conduct the chorus. Leach, professor of music/music education, is director and founder of Essence

of Joy Alumni Singers. He served as conductor of the Penn State University Choir from 1994 to 2015 and taught undergraduate and graduate courses in choral music education. Currently, Leach teaches a graduate music education seminar and coordinates the African American Music Festival at Penn State.

Leach holds a doctorate in music education and a master’s degree in conducting from Penn State, as well as a bachelor’s degree in music education from Lebanon Valley College. Leach taught music in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York City for 14 years. His choirs have performed throughout the U.S. and around the world. Leach also serves as a conductor of the Essence of Joy Alumni Singers and Essence 2 Ltd.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture is encouraging businesses to obtain the required spotted lanternfly permit to ensure they are complying with the spotted lanternfly quarantine orders. As the next phase of the spotted lanternfly life cycle gears up, now is an ideal time for businesses to learn how they can jumpstart this spring’s fight.

There is no cost to businesses to obtain a permit. Under the law, businesses in Pennsylvania need to take the online permit training and exam and receive a permit for their vehicles. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture continues its work to contain and minimize the spread of the spotted lanternfly while also keeping commerce flowing in Pennsylvania.

In November 2017, 13 Pennsylvania counties - Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Delaware, L a n caster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Philadelphia, and Schuylkill were placed under quarantine to help stop the spread of the spotted lanternfly. States with spotted lanternfly populations are also required to follow the permit requirements for Pennsylvania.

This will help prevent the movement of the pest from other states into Pennsylvania.

The spotted lanternfly permit training teaches business owners, managers, and designated employees how to comply with the quarantine - an important legal designation to help stop the spread of spotted lanternfly - to ensure each of their employees are complying with the law. The quarantine order directs businesses, residents, and county authorities to follow guidelines to prevent the movement of the certain articles that contain any living stages of the spotted lanternfly, including egg masses, nymphs, and adults such as logs, stumps, or any tree parts; nursery stock; crated materials; and trucks or vehicles not stored indoors.

By investing time and personnel to inspect vehicles to safeguard against transporting insects, people can help to ensure this pest does not reach farther beyond those counties that are already quarantined.

As part of the spotted lanternfly quarantine agreement beginning on Wednesday, May 1, The Department’s Bureau of Plant Industry will begin to perform inspections and verification checks to confirm that businesses are properly permitted. Failure to take the permit exam and educate employees could result in possible penalties and fines.

Barons Rally For a 5-point Win Over Solanco

Charlie Fisher says his guys have “really brought it and are playing with a sense of urgency.”

That was the case Tuesday, Jan. 15 when the Barons’ boys’ basketball team put the throttle down and beat Solanco 58-53.

Central led 19-10 after the first quarter, but the Golden Mules had a huge second quarter, going on a 20-4 run to take a 30-23 halftime lead.

Then it was gut check time, as the Barons kept battling back.

“What a game,” Fisher, Manheim’s head coach, said. “From there (halftime) we just battled the whole second half and chipped away. Their lead got as big as eight and we just kept attacking.”

Fisher said senior guard Cam Sell did a great job controlling the game and sophomore guard Cam Eberly had his best offensive game of the year.

Central chipped away behind 18 points in the third quarter and playing strong defense to hold Solanco to

seven points in the final stanza.

Sophomore forward Colton Book made two huge free throws for Manheim down the stretch to pull away for the victory. Senior guard Chase Marquette paced the Barons with 12 points, senior guard Chase Brenize added 11 points and Book collected 10 points.

During the Barons’ recent success Fisher says Marquette has been hitting 3-pointers, Drew Mummau is playing excellent in his role off the bench and Brenize is turning into a defensive specialist. Fisher also noted that Evan Hosler brings a nice spark off the bench and does all the dirty work.

The result did not go Central’s way against Cocalico in a low-scoring 44-37 loss Friday, Jan. 18.

Manheim trailed 7-5 after the first quarter and 16-10 at halftime. It was pretty even in the second half as both teams scored 13 points in the third quarter and the Eagles outscored the Barons 15-14 in the fourth.

Marquette led Manheim with 11 points, including a 3-pointer. Sell added 10 points and Hosler netted six.

RIFLE Steve Waddington, the Barons’ rifle coach, was not unhappy with the way Manheim shot this week. The opposition just shot better. The Barons lost two matches to teams with scores of 499, a point away from perfect scores.

Manheim Township outshot the Barons 499-492 on Tuesday, Jan. 15.

Freshmen shooters represented Manheim well with Anna Haldeman shooting a 100 and Ellie McCabe notching a 99. Andrew Cunrod, a junior, also shot a 99. He shot last year and has been in some matches this season, but everything clicked well for him against the Blue Streaks.

Against Ephrata, the Barons shot a 495.

“It was a respectable score,” Waddington said, “but not when the other team shoots a 499.”

Waddington also noted the improved shooting of Stone, a sophomore, who was born with a deformity with her arms (both arms are short), but has overcome this to show continued growth in her shooting.

She uses a wobble stand while shooting. Her elbows are her wrists.

“She’s phenomenal,” Waddington said. “She holds her weight up with her arms and she shoots a 100.”

Besides shooting, she also surfs. In fact, she missed a week of the rifle season to surf in a competition in California for the United States Surf Team. Waddington said Stone could be a top five shooter or be battling for a top five spot now if she did not miss that week.

MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition SWIMMING Tuesday, Jan. 15 the girls’ team beat Cocalico 77-66. The Lady Barons had some outstanding performances.

Olivia Faulhaber won 50 freestyle (27.45); 100 free (1:02.34) and the girls went 1, 2 and 3 in 100 free with Ashley Hartzler (2nd, 1:05.60) and Lily Redcay (3rd, 1:06.61).

The 200 free relay team of A. Hartzler, L. Redcay, Ellie Fittery and Faulhaber clocked a winning a time of 1:58.17.

Chamberlain said McCord looked the best he’s seen him look this year. Usually he wrestles at 182, but he moved up to 195 as part of a strategy to gain more points in the lineup. The coach noted that Betancourt and Zeamer set the tone for the team as leaders on the mats in practices and in matches.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Barons played well in the first and fourth quarters, but struggled in the middle quarters, scoring only 11 points, against Solanco in a 64-38 loss Tuesday, Jan. 15.

“We let them speed us up in the second quarter causing us to take quick shots,” said head coach Amanda Burns. “It wasn’t a great shooting night and we missed a lot of layups.”

Kamryn Miller (six points) hit two 3-pointers in the first half to give Manheim momentum. “Miller is gaining confidence at the varsity level,” said Burns. “We like what we see.”

Burns added that freshman Paige Snyder also did a great job of getting to the foul line, shooting 5-for-6.

Junior guard Laura Good led the Barons with 11 points. Junior guard Kassidy Michael added eight points, including a 3-pointer, and freshman center Paige Snyder chipped in seven points.

The Barons started off slow, only scoring 10 points in the first half, and despite a great effort in the second half, came up short in a 50-38 loss to Cocalico Friday, Jan. 18.

Seniors Of The Month Honored Mason Nissley and Shiloh Harrill have been selected as January’s Seniors of the Month at Manheim Central High School. The Manheim Women’s Club sponsors the Girls of the Month and honors them at a dinner meeting at the end of the year. The Boys of the Month are sponsored by the Rotary Club of Manheim. Both students are invited to a luncheon at Pleasant View Town Square North in the month they were chosen. Seniors of the Month are chosen by the professional staff of the high school based on academic achievement, character and involvement within the school and community.

Mason, 17, is the son of Phil and Christie Nissley of Manheim. He has been a member of the varsity soccer and varsity volleyball teams for his entire high school career, and for soccer he was voted Best Leader and Rookie of the Year in his junior and freshman years, respectively. For volleyballl, he was a Section 2 first team All-Star for three years, a Section 2 MVP in his sophomore year and all-state for two years. Mason is a member of the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Spanish Club and Student Council. He has served on multiple mission trips into Lancaster city with his youth groups.

Mason plans to attend college to major in business and play volleyball.

Penn State Extension Lancaster County’s annual meeting and social event will be held on Thursday, Jan. 31, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a social hour and food in the food court.

Throughout the evening, attendees will learn about the Lancaster County Extension and 4-H STEM learning opportunities. Dr. Troy Ott, associate director of the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences at Penn State University, will present “Truth About GMOs and Your Food: Separating the Myth From Reality.”

The presentation will address the following questions: Are there genetically engineered (GE) animals in agriculture? Why were they developed and are they really needed? What would be the reason a farmer would want to use a GE plant or animal? Are GE foods safe for people and the environment?

Are there negative consequences of feeding GE crops to animals or humans? Can people just avoid GE? Should people really be modifying genomes? What about unintended consequences? What developments are on the horizon for genetic engineering?
