Baron Elementary School kindergartner Makenna Linder fought a battle with a rare form of cancer when she was 3 years old, and now at age 6 she is battling another form of the disease. On Friday, Jan. 17, her classmates, school, and community are planning to rally around her in a tremendous show of support through a #PinkOutForMakenna. Makenna’s teacher, Julie Reed, wanted to make sure her student felt an abundance of love from her 21 classmates as she began undergoing chemotherapy treatment. Reed also wanted to find a way to support Makenna’s family - which includes parents Matthew and Amanda and brother Bradyn, a fifth-grader through both the financial and emotional tolls of the process. In 2017, Makenna was diagnosed with a Stage II
Wilms tumor that necessitated the removal of a kidney. “Her right kidney was so enlarged that it was pushing on her left kidney, relayed Amanda. Amanda explained that once Makenna had the kidney removed, she was deemed cancer-free. Makenna underwent 18 weeks of chemotherapy treatments that were considered preventative, and she returned to Penn State Children’s Hospital for follow-up appointments every three months for the following year. “She bounced back pretty quickly, shared Amanda. “She dreaded (the check-ups) at first, but then she was healthy so it was just something she got used to. By the end of February 2019, Makenna was cleared to go six months before her next check-up. In November 2019, the doctors discovered that Makenna’s body had another rare form of cancer: rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), or as Amanda said, “We just call it rhabda. Makenna began receiving chemotherapy treatments See Makenna pg 3
A #PinkOutForMakenna will take place on Jan. 17, when students in the Manheim Central School District and everyone in the surrounding communities are invited to wear pink in a show of support for Baron Elementary School kindergartner Makenna Linder. Makenna is currently undergoing treatment for her second battle with cancer.
