L-S Heroes Visit Students

ARRIVING LATE?

Fifty Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School seniors made their first of four visits to Hans Herr Elementary third-graders in October as this year’s league of High School Heroes. They handed out trading cards and brought showand-tell-style favorite items. Each Hero sat down with several small groups of third-graders to discuss their high school lives, including future plans, hobbies, and personal best practices. Teachers nominate High School Heroes at the end of junior year, and rising seniors are invited during the summer. Heroes train to be mentors by participating in a series of lessons based on positive decision making and drug- and alcohol-free lifestyles. High School Heroes have varied interests and extracurricular activities, including sports, music, agriculture, and academics, so that every elementary school child can feel connected and inspired. Faulkner Chevrolet helped spearhead a campaign, alongside Faulkner BMW, in conjunction with The Salvation Army to bring Christmas cheer to 75 children throughout Lancaster County. It was the first collaboration between the two Faulkner dealerships and the local Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program. The Angel Tree Program is an annual event. Children ages of 2 to 18 can request gifts, and the Lancaster community supports the

efforts to grant their wishes. Children provide their size for a new jacket and request hats, gloves, and scarves to keep them warm during the winter months. Requested toys include crafts, board games, dolls, stuffed animals, and more. The goal is for donors to give what they are able and bring joy to children during the holiday season. Faulkner Chevrolet general manager Chad Berger organized the dealerships’ participation in the project.

Middle-schoolers in the Project-Based Learning program at Lancaster Mennonite School hosted their first-quarter exhibition night on Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. Exhibition nights are public presentations of projects at the end of each school quarter, offering family and friends the opportunity to see what students have been working on and empowering students to be able to present and demonstrate their projects in a professional way. Exhibition nights showcase work by students in the Project-Based Learning program, which is unique to the Lancaster Campus Middle School. The students had spent the months leading up to the exhibition night researching regions of the world that are experiencing a water crisis, and then they problem-solved, prototyped, analyzed, designed and built solutions. From focusing on a water shortage in India to hurricanes in the Bahamas, the students created desalination filters, rain

catchment systems, hurricane simulators and redesigned groundwater wells. They also developed new water carrying systems to give women the opportunity to attend school. At the exhibition night, students presented and demonstrated their projects. More than 200 guests attended the public event and heard first-hand about the global water crisis around the world and the students’ solutions. The middle school’s theme for the next quarter is “The 100 People Project: A World Portrait,” and it focuses on people and populations. The aim of this project is to select and present a sample of 100 people from the Earth’s population of 7.5 billion people, with the 100 individuals representing the global population, proportionate to annual global surveys and statistics. The project will capture these people in film, photography, music and text. This world portrait will be used to make an introduction between the peoples of the Earth

and to facilitate an understanding of the diversity and commonalities among people. The project aims to help participants better understand who humans are as a species and to inspire people to see the world in a new way.

Exhibition nights are open to the public, and the next one will be held on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020, at 6 p.m. at Lancaster Mennonite Middle School on the Lancaster Campus, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster.
