The 35th annual Crispus Attucks Community Center MLK Breakfast will be held from 7 to 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, returning to an in-person gathering at Millersville University with the addition of a livestream option. The event will be held at Marauder Courts at the Student Memorial Center on Shenks Lane. The event’s master of ceremonies will be Jeremy Jenkins from WGALTV. Pedro Rivera, president of Thaddeus Stevens College, is this year’s honorary event chair.
The event is a time for the community to come together, to foster relationships, to dialogue around the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.,
and to confront issues of inequity and injustice. This event, the center’s largest fundraiser, annually raises $100,000 - nearly one-third of the center’s yearly budget.
Marc Lamont Hill, who previously spoke at the 2018 MLK Breakfast, will present “And How Are the Children … Now?” “And how are the children?” is a traditional greeting passed amongst the Masai in Kenya. The greeting acknowledges the high value of children and their wellbeing, and it acts as a measure of how the community and society is faring. The goal is to always be able to answer the greeting with “All the children are well.” Hill will speak about how people can collectively
work to build a better community and world, one where they can say, “All the children are well.”
A Philadelphia native, Hill is currently the host of BET News and a political contributor for CNN. He has received numerous awards from the National Association of Black Journalists, GLAAD, and the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. He is the Steve Charles Professor of Media, Cities, and Solutions at Temple University. Prior to that, he held positions at Columbia University and Morehouse College. He is a founding board member of the nonprofit organization My5th, as well as a board member and organizer of the
Philadelphia Student Union. Hill also works closely with the ACLU Drug Reform Project, focusing on drug informant policy. He received his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, and he is the author or co-author of several books.
New this year, three ticket options will be available in the spirit of access and inclusion. These ticket options are an inperson ticket, a discounted livestream ticket, and a paywhat-you-will in-person ticket. To purchase tickets, visit www.caplanc.org/MLK or contact Kristy Aurand at kaurand@caplanc.org or 717299-7388, ext. 3032. Sponsorships are also available; for details, contact Aurand.

Boehm’s United Methodist Church (UMC) will hold a Christmas Eve service on Saturday, Dec. 24, at 10 p.m. in its historic Boehm’s Chapel, 13 W. Boehms Road, Willow Street. The church will also hold a 7 p.m. service in the main church building. Boehm’s pastor, the Rev. Joan Trout, will lead both services.
The historic Boehm’s Chapel is known as the first church built for Methodist worship in Lancaster County and the fourth-oldest Methodist house of worship standing in the country. Originally constructed in 1791, the church was rebuilt and rededicated in 1991 to resemble what the chapel looked like in its early days.
For more details, email secretary@boehmsumc.org.
First Presbyterian Church Lancaster, 140 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will display artworks by Dorothy Thayne through Tuesday, Jan. 3, as part of the installation “Art of the Icon: Process as Prayer.”
First Presbyterian Church Lancaster is committed to creating beautiful and original expressions of worship centered in Christ throughout the year and in a variety of ways. Over the years, art has become one of the many focuses of the church to help convey its members’ faith and connect with the
greater Lancaster city community. That tradition continues with the current art installation.
Thayne, a Lancaster County artist and iconographer, is displaying more than a dozen icons showcasing her 30 years of focusing on the art of iconography. An icon is a work of art painted in a prayerful manner using a symbolic visual language and images that originate in early church tradition. According to Thayne, an icon is not simply a holy picture; it illustrates a spiritual reality, not a photographic reality. The word
“iconography” comes from “graphia,” referring to the acts of writing and painting - both word and image, and “icon,” which comes from the Greek word “eikon” and means “image.”
Subtle artistic nuances create styles that differentiate the icons of one culture or time period from another. Thayne’s icons, which are painted in the Byzantine style, are a source of sacred art for both the Western and Eastern Catholic churches.
Materials of the highest quality are used to create an icon: pure gold leaf; natural pigments from the Earth, bound with the yolk of an egg; and a base of wood covered with a gesso of chalk and marble dust. The paint is then applied in many layers resulting in a translucency that gives the icon the quality of inner light. The process of creating an icon has many steps, and it may take Thayne months, if not years, to create a piece.
The community is invited to visit First Presbyterian Church Lancaster during open hours to view the installation. For more information, visit www.fpclancasterpa.org or call 717-394-6854.
The Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum recently opened its first public-facing location in 40 years at 410 N. Lime St., Lancaster. The museum opened with an event on Dec. 10.

caster County area. The organization’s mission is to preserve and protect the rich medical heritage with special attention given to Lancaster County, and its vision is to uphold this mission through education, exhibition, and research.
The museum includes an iron lung from the 1950s polio epidemic and exhibitions on ophthalmology, dentistry, family medicine, and pandemics and prevention, as well as a hands-on section to
learn the five skills all doctors must know and a community space to showcase artworks by local artists.
Admission will be free throughout December.

Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) sold its former New Danville Campus property located at 393 Long Lane, Lancaster, to Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning on Oct. 21. LMS unified all students from the former Locust Grove and New Danville campuses on the Lincoln Highway campus for the 2022-23 school year, starting in August.
The mission of LMS is to provide a Christ-centered, high quality education for prekindergarten through 12th-grade students in a diverse community that nurtures them to become creative and innovative learners who are prepared for college, a career, and life and are empowered to change the world through Christ-like love, peacemaking, and service.
LMS’ unification has allowed the school to update
and expand its facilities and to hone in on key curriculum priorities of faith formation, fine arts, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math), outdoor learning, and world languages. It has also allowed for collaborative learning opportunities across grade levels with the goal of fully utilizing and effectively stewarding the resources of its 95-acre Lincoln Highway campus.
The upgrades to the campus are intended to help the school serve the needs of students at every age and provide new spaces such as a new elementary MakerSpace and art room, new high school science labs, new media centers, and classroom upgrades, which are designed to support new curriculum initiatives to help students grow in their understanding of the world and discover their purpose in it.
The Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning are subsidiaries of Milton Hershey School. The Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning are for children
from birth to age 5 and provide weekday care and education for early childhood learning. Their program covers all the costs for those who qualify.
