4-H Clubs To Start New Program Year
2270 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, will offer beginner non-credit American Sign Language (ASL) classes from 6 to 8 p.m. from Tuesday, Jan. 7, through Thursday, Feb. 27. Students will meet once per week on either Tuesday or Thursday. There is a cost per student, plus a fee for books. All courses will be taught by instructors who are deaf. Youths ages 5 to 18 who are interested in horses and ponies are welcome to join one of two Southern End-based 4-H horse clubs. The Rough Riders 4-H Horse and Pony Club meets at the Next Gen Senior Center, 184 S. Lime St., Quarryville, at 7 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of every month. The Hooves & Hearts 4-H Horse Club meets at the same time at Stehman Memorial United Methodist Church (UMC), 485 Indian Run Road, Millersville. Both the Rough Riders and Hooves & Hearts clubs are open to youths ages 8 to 18. The Cloverbud Horse Program is open to children ages 5 to 7. “You usually want to choose a club based on

The Rough Riders will meet on Thursday, Jan. 2, at 7 p.m. at the senior center, and the Hooves & Hearts will meet on Thursday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. at Stehman Memorial UMC. Parents are expected to stay for the meetings. “We rely very strongly on parent participation, particularly with young children,” Fairchild said. Horse ownership is not required for club membership. 10th Annual Glen Lapp Volleyball Tournament Scheduled
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania has announced George Swartz as Volunteer of the Year for 2020. Swartz was recently selected for the honor by the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s board of directors from among the museum’s corps of more than 150 active volunteers. Swartz retired from globetrotting for a living following a 35-year career as a corporate pilot for Armstrong World Industries. He is now indulging his many interests, including world travel; amassing railroad memorabilia like lanterns, tools, and insulators; and creating model train layouts. Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) will hold its 10th annual Glen Lapp Memorial Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 4, and Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020, at Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS), 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The tournament will be divided into two divisions with a maximum of 20 teams playing in each division. Division B will play beginning at 9 a.m. on Jan. 4, and Division A will play beginning at noon on Jan. 11. Lancaster Mennonite High School graduate Glen Lapp was killed on Aug. 5, 2010, when he and nine others were ambushed in a remote area of Afghanistan. The 10th annual Glen Lapp Memorial Volleyball Tournament will be held on Saturday, Jan. 4, and Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020. The event raises funds for the Glen D. Lapp Endowment for Student Aid.

The BIA Pillar Awards recognize member companies and their professional achievements. Award categories included Advertising and Marketing, Professional Achievement, and Company Achievement. Glen was killed on Aug. 5, 2010, when he and nine others were ambushed after holding an eye and dental clinic in a remote area of Afghanistan. Glen, who was a nurse, had first traveled to Afghanistan in October 2008 through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in partnership with International Assistance Mission. To reach the village

Before becoming a nurse, Glen attended Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), where he played volleyball and earned a degree in math. Following graduation from EMU, Glen worked as the dorm supervisor at LMHS and coached volleyball. He later completed a Johns Hopkins accelerated course to become a

registered nurse in one year. During his adult life, Glen lived in six states, serving people from all walks of life as a registered nurse. He worked at Lancaster Regional Hospital and for the Traveling Nurses Association, which took him to New York City and Oregon. He also worked in a government clinic on a Native American reserve in Supai, Ariz. The tournament is organized by Mark Leaman and Kevin Groff, with help from Glen’s cousin Joel Lapp. Leaman and Groff played volleyball for LMHS and were coached by Glen in 1992 and 1993. The initial tournament held in Glen’s honor was organized by his cousin Tim Lapp. From the tournament and other donations, the endowment has received almost $50,000. Funds are used to provide scholarships to immigrant and refugee children at the school. Play during the tournament is “Glen-style,” which means there are no officials. Glen-style play will be explained to the teams prior to each tournament. Registration for the tournament is now open, and those interested in taking part are encouraged to sign up soon as the spaces for teams fill up quickly. Members of the Garden Spot FFA participated in the West Lampeter Fair, held from Sept. 25 to 27. At this year’s event, 14 Garden Spot FFA members exhibited projects, including market swine, market goats, market lambs, market steers and dairy beef. Jessica Herr entered hay and recieved Best of Show. During the market swine show on Sept. 25, Jordan Martin received second in his class, and Owen Risser won first place in his first class and second place in his second class. Tobias Leaman’s hogs, exhibited by Stephanie Mays, placed third and fourth in their market classes. Leah Welk won first and second place in her classes, and Gracie Hess placed third and fourth in her market classes. Junior FFA member Jaclyn Martin received second and third place in her market classes. Garden Spot FFA members also exhibited in the market lamb show on Sept. 25. Leah Welk received Grand Champion Lamb, and Grace Hess received third and fourth place for her lambs. In the market goat show, Leah Welk received Grand Champion, and Katie Ranck received two fourth-place awards and one sixth-place honor. This year, Garden Spot
FFA collectively invested 320 community service hours at the fair, helping with setup, teardown and the food stand. FFA chapter president Jessica Herr was crowned fair queen on Sept. 25. Competitors represented 16 clubs from Lampeter-Strasburg High School. Jessica will represent the West Lampeter Community Fair at the state contest in January 2020. Garden Spot FFA members participated in Upperclassmen Livestock Evaluation Contest on Sept. 26. The Hans Herr FFA, Pequea Valley FFA, Grassland FFA, and Manor FFA chapters also participated. Also on Sept. 26, the dairy beef and market steer show was held, and seven Grassland FFA members placed within their classes. In the market steer show, Jordan Martin placed second twice within his classes, Jaclyn Martin placed third and fourth within her classes and Jared Risser placed second twice within his classes. In the dairy beef section of the show, Tyler Stoltzfus placed second and fifth in his classes, Bryce Good placed first and second within his classes, Alexis Rohrer placed second twice and received Champion Novice Showman within her classes, and Danae Ranck received
Grand Champion Dairy Beef and Champion Senior Showman. On Sept. 27, the underclassmen had a judging contest so that current agricultural education students can learn more about how to judge animals and crops. The youth livestock auction also took place. Among the animals auctioned off were Tobias Leaman’s two pigs. Tobias had been diagnosed with bone cancer over the summer and, due to his condition, was unable to continue caring for his pigs. FFA members took on the responsibility of finishing his market hog project. The proceeds from the sale of Tobias’ pigs were returned to Tobias’ family to cover medical expenses. The community raised more than $20,000 to go toward Tobias’ medical expenses and future endeavors. That night, members of Garden Spot FFA, Manor FFA and 4-H gathered to show their support of Tobias. Local companies and individuals collectively invested $39,250 in Garden Spot FFA youth livestock exhibitors at the fair. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 600 Gap Road, Strasburg, preserves a collection of about 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars and houses a vast library and archives, a working restoration shop, an immersive education center, and a museum store. He went on to graduate from the Piedmont Aerospace Institute, where he learned everything about aircraft, not just how to fly a plane. Swartz is proud of achieving more than 74,000 hours of flight safety. His knowledge of mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and various other processes has served him well not only in his career as a pilot but in building his own home and in his model train hobby. Swartz’s love for trains began at age 4, with American Flyer pieces, which he still collects. Swartz is a regular volunteer on the Pennsylvania Middle Division operating model train layout located in the museum’s second-floor gallery. “Volunteering at the museum is so much fun, and I love every moment of it,” Swartz said. “The camaraderie is terrific, and everyone - volunteers and staff - is so upbeat. I particularly enjoy interacting with our patrons and making amazing connections with people from all walks of life.” A native of Lancaster, Swartz currently resides in Lititz. He is the father of an adult son and an adult daughter, whom he readily helps with home renovation projects. Until recently, he and his KPETS therapy dog Sunny visited nursing home residents. Fairchild noted that the Rough Riders club had 13 teen leaders last year, and part of their responsibilities was partnering with new club members. One youngster did so well with her teen leader that she advanced to statelevel competition. “We interact like a family. You look up to your teen leader, the president, (and) the vice president, and when you have gone through the program, you teach others,” Fairchild said. “You get this neat mentor/mentee thing going on.” 4-H offers opportunities to compete in competitive trail riding, driving, and Western, English, and saddle seat styles of riding. The Rough Riders have two fun shows a year, which are held at the Columbia Riding Club, 1800 Franklin St., Columbia. Lancaster County 4-H also hosts a local competitive show, and club members can advance to district and state levels. “I love 4-H because we try to expose the kids to all the disciplines,” Fairchild said. “If we can expose them to all the opportunities out there, then they can cre-
ate connections to be involved in whatever becomes their lifetime interest in riding.” 4-H members have gone on to compete in high school rodeo, Pony Club, racing, and polo, Fairchild said, adding, “They are the foundation of who are running the horse programs in the area.” There is a cost to join a 4-H club. Rough Riders holds a sub sale in February to raise money for activities and for charity. Club members vote on recipients for the charitable donations, which usually are related to horses. The other portion of the proceeds goes to the senior center, the Columbia Riding Club, the Maryland-based stable where the summer campout is held, and the costs of hosting a show, including renting the grounds and buying trophies and ribbons. Additionally, the club offers pony rides at the annual Rubber Ducky Race and Festival and splits the proceeds with the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development. The event, held at the Eden Resort and Suites, raised more than $160,000 for farmland preservation. Jeff Swinehart, chief operating officer for LFT, announced that over the past year, the organization worked with 11 farm families to preserve 650 acres of Lancaster County farmland. Since its start in 1988, the nonprofit has protected a total of 504 farms covering more than 30,600 acres. Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding attended the event and spoke about the ongoing importance of farmland preservation and Lancaster County’s foundational role in the movement in Pennsylvania. He cited the partnership between the Lancaster County Agricultural Preserve Board and Lancaster Farmland Trust as a model for achieving success in preserving what is special about Lancaster County. Faulkner Chevrolet joined local Lancaster County police departments and first responders in November to support the 2019 Beards for Brothers campaign. The campaign was started by Officer Bill Watt of West Hempfield Township. Each year, officers select a first responder or organization from the community who is currently battling cancer or provides care to those battling cancer. This year, the Beards for Brothers campaign raised money for Police Sgt. Harold E. Gainer Jr., who retired after 25 years of service in East Hempfield Township. He also served two years in the United States Marine Corps, serving his country with distinction fighting in the Vietnam War. In January of this year, he was diagnosed with a form of leukemia. Also supported through the fundraiser was Andrew Etman, an EMT volunteer
and firefighter, was diagnosed over the summer with stage 4 diffused large B-cell nonHodgkins lymphoma.
