Brian Fulmer never planned to become a social media influencer, but that’s where he finds himself today. That is, Fulmer is the man behind the curtain of the Strasburgtoday Facebook page. Fulmer started the page five years ago after he began blogging to fill the vacuum created by the shutdown of Strasburg’s borough-specific newspaper. The blog never caught on, but the Facebook page eventually exploded. “The first 100 followers were the hardest, but then some big stories happened. That’s when it really started to climb,” Fulmer recalled. “Once it hit 300 followers, it really started to speed up.” Page follows now exceed 1,000, a significant number considering that Strasburg has 3,000 residents. To create content for the page, Fulmer reads local newspapers and follows all of the relevant Facebook pages he can find. His general goal is to list events that are coming up and anything going on around town, such as chicken barbecues, obituaries, borough news, and street closures. Fulmer posts clips from newspaper archives from past centuries to show what was going on in Strasburg back then. On Sundays, he posts a picture of the week and an inspirational post. He also tries to do a question of the week or a food-related question each week as well. The historical posts typically generate comments of gratitude, and the highlighted pictures have been a hit as well. “I gather those (photos) from

Contactless Amish Farmland Tour Offered

The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership recently awarded its first Mira Lloyd Dock Partnership Diversity Awards to Rafiyqa Muhammad of Harrisburg and Kristen Thomas of Lancaster. The women were recognized for their conservation and urban beautification work in underrepresented portions of their communities. The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership presented the awards during the Pennsylvania Forestry Association’s (PFA) virtual annual meeting. The PFA also bestowed its Mira Lloyd Dock Outstanding Woman Conservationist Award upon Sally Zaino during that meeting. The Keystone partnership presented Muhammad, Thomas, and Zaino with $5,000 worth of trees and supplies each, to help advance their efforts. Thomas was nominated by Shea Zwerver, policy specialist for the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and Karl Graybill, environmental planner for the City of Lancaster. She is being recognized for her work with under-represented residents in Lancaster city and for establishing Lancaster Tree Tenders. Thomas has led Arbor Day activities as well as street tree and riparian buffer planting events involving members of the community. Third-graders can ask questions, chat with the older students, and receive trading cards for each Hero they meet. High school English teacher Susan Rettew leads a high school committee to select Heroes from each year’s current junior class. Chosen students are invited during the summer and trained in time for their first visit. Thirdgrade teacher Jo Carole Dodson coordinates the program at Hans Herr Elementary School. Rettew thanked Dodson, the Heroes and the thirdgrade teachers for their parts in making the program possible this year. She also recognized Adam Zurn, who created the Heroes’ trading cards.

The PPL Foundation announced the winners of its Bright Lights grants, which honor the people who are working to transform lives in their communities. The grants’ name comes from the idea that the winners are the bright lights powering progress and making a difference. The PPL Foundation awarded a total of $100,000 in grants to help illuminate the outstanding contributions of individuals working in the nonprofit sector. Ten Bright Lights grants of $10,000 were awarded in recognition of the honorees to the nonprofit agencies they support.

A selection committee of field experts selected the winners for not only providing outstanding career preparation but also for intentionally reaching out to and supporting diverse populations that typically are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers, including students of color, low-income students, and females. As part of the award, the winning programs, in partnership with the Aspen Institute, have selected 44 outstanding students as Siemens Technical Scholars. They will each receive a scholarship of $3,500 to $10,000 to continue their education or pay student loan debt. These diverse scholars will share their stories to demonstrate the economic and personal opportunities available through STEM careers. City Announces Interim Police Chief Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace was scheduled to bring the appointment of John T. Bey as interim chief of police to City Council on Nov. 24. City Council planned to vote on the appointment at its regular meeting on that date. Following a thorough background investigation, Bey was introduced to City Council earlier in November and the Community Police Working Group on Nov. 23, and he planned to participate in City Council’s public meeting on Nov. 24. After the council’s approval, he was scheduled to join the Bureau of Police on Dec. 7. Bey has an extensive background in law enforcement, including expertise in communications, community policing, effective recruitment of minorities and women, managing budgets and resource allocation, and education and training.

He retired in November as superintendent of the 193rd Special Operations Comptroller Flight, 193rd Special Operations Wing, of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard in Middletown, and he previously served as the chief of police for the Middletown Bureau Police Department from October 2014 through May 2017. Prior to that, he spent 25 years with the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP). During his time with PSP, Bey served in a variety of supervisory roles including patrol unit supervisor, patrol section commander, and criminal investigation section commander. Additionally, he served as a negotiator for the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) and led the Heritage Affairs and Recruitment and Special Services offices. During his time in Heritage Affairs, he investigat-
