Model railroaders use small trains to make a big difference
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Six years ago, Al Strausner and his grandson Matthew Palmieri started an annual tradition that combines their love for model railroading with the desire to give back to the community. Every December, the two train enthusiasts set up a model train display at West Willow United Methodist Church (UMC), 118 West Willow Road, Willow Street. The event allows Strausner and Palmieri, now 17 years old, to share their

passion with members of the community in addition to benefiting nonprofits in Conestoga and Quarryville.
Strausner and Palmieri’s display returned to West Willow UMC on Dec. 7, and it will be open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 14, 21 and 28, and Sundays, Dec. 15, 22 and 29. Admission will be offered by donations of nonperishable food items or cash; all proceeds will benefit Conestoga Area Food Bank and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries in Quarryville.
Although the display features many of the same models as previous years, Strausner and Palmieri typically arrange the

pieces differently to offer visitors a unique experience every year.
“We switch it up every year,” Strausner said. “Nothing stays the same except the track.”
This year, the locomotive-loving duo has joined forces with a few other railheads to expand the event; the display at West Willow UMC will include an addition from Ben Stiles, and a second layout will be set up by Chris and Justin Trout at their home, located at 1729 Hans Herr Drive,
will be open to the public during the same hours as the West Willow UMC layout, and the couple will also offer admission by donations of nonperishables or cash for Solanco Neighborhood Ministries and Conestoga Area Food Bank.
“We try to change it up a bit to make it interesting for people,” said Palmieri. “People always love pointing out the models they had in their own Christmas setups as

For many people, volleyball is a casual, fun game you might play at the beach with your friends or family members. For Lampeter-Strasburg High School (LSHS) senior Megan Platt, the sport is much, much more. Platt recently finished her volleyball career at LSHS, where she played as a starter on the school’s varsity team for three years. Platt also helped carry her team to first place in the section twice during her time playing at the high school level. Although her time as a Pioneer is at an end, she doesn’t plan to put the volleyball on the shelf any time soon; after Platt graduates from LSHS in the spring, she will attend the University of North Carolina at Wilmington to play Division I volleyball. “(The University of North Carolina at Wilmington) reached out to me at a tournament one time, so I decided to check it out,” Platt said. “I immediately fell in love with the campus and the team

atmosphere. Once I saw it, I wanted to be there - it felt like home.”
During Platt’s last season as a high school volleyball player, she was named the Most Valuable Player in Section 2 at the Lancaster-Lebanon League volleyball banquet. Every season, the section’s coaches hold a vote to recognize a player who works hard, brings good energy to the

In November, Lancaster-based screamo outfit Fragile Like Life After toured to celebrate the release of its latest EP, “A Long Look At A Short Distance.” The fall tour marks the band’s third time hitting the road this year, and the EP follows two albums and a single that Fragile Like Life After has released since 2021. The expedition served as an opportunity for the threepiece project to showcase the fresh material as it trod new
ground - creatively and literally. Fragile Like Life After comprises bassist Adrian Alicea, guitarist Max Ludewig and drummer Chris Copeland, who formed the band in 2021. The three Millersville University alumni met through school a few years prior, and they had already become close friends by the time the band took shape. Fragile Like Life After’s debut album, “I Thought I Saw A UFO But It Was Just Five Months,” laid the foundation for a sound as distinct as its name, taking

kids, which is neat to see.”
Palmieri said that many visitors return to view the display each year, and the number of new guests has continued to grow since the first event. In 2023, Strausner and Palmieri raised more than $1,500 and garnered 400 nonperishable items for the food banks in Conestoga and Quarryville, and 365 community members visited the layout.

This year, the benefit event will feature a second layout at the residence of Justin (left) and Chris Trout.

Strausner and Palmieri’s train-centered Christmas tradition has grown in more ways than one. In addition to collaborating with other model railroaders and having more visitors each year, Strausner said people have begun traveling from all over Lancaster County to check out the display and to support the food banks.
“We just love the whole thing,” Strausner said. “Seeing the people who always come back is neat, and they’ve helped us raise a good amount of money for a good cause.”

Volunteers sought for Christmas Bird Counts
The Lancaster County Bird Club will sponsor the Lancaster County Christmas Bird Counts. Citizen scientists may participate in Solanco on Sunday, Dec. 15; in Lancaster on Sunday, Dec. 22; in the Christmas Bird Count for Kids at the Lancaster County Central Park on Dec 22; or in Lititz on Sunday, Dec. 29.
Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called the Christmas Bird Count, with much of the legwork done by volunteers. Birders of all skill levels may participate, including backyard bird watchers. The data collected has been used for studying bird population trends, migration patterns, and conservation policy.
The Christmas Birds Count for Kids will be held in collaboration with the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation. It is designed to teach children about birding and volunteering as a citizen scientist. All children are required to register with the Parks Department by calling 717295-2055, and all kids must be accompanied by an adult. Adults without kids are also welcome. Additional questions about the Christmas Bird Count for Kids may be directed to John Lahr at 717-205-3030 or johnlahr324 @gmail.com.
For all the Counts, backyard
birders are asked to register with the contact person before the event to determine if their home is within the Count circle. Interested persons will be assigned to a team with leaders who are acquainted with their areas.
For details on the Solanco event, contact Derek Stoner at 484-723-3348 or derekstoner @hotmail.com. For the Lancaster event, the contact is Roger Stoner at 717-393-9030. Information

court and works together with other team members. At the start of the season, Platt set a personal goal to receive the title of MVP, but she said she was still surprised when she received the honor. “I told my dad at the beginning of the season that I wanted to be MVP,” added Platt. “I made sure I was encouraging my teammates so my energy would fill the court, reaching other players and connecting us to play well together.”
Platt started her volleyball journey in elementary school.
Although she had played the sport a few times with her cousins during vacation trips, Platt wasn’t hooked until she attended a volleyball camp as a young athlete. Platt progressed to the club level when she was 12 years old, and she started competing at Spooky Nook Sports in Manheim. “I fell in love with itthe competitiveness, diving all over the place and working as a team,” Platt said.
Platt plays the position of libero, a back-row player who specializes in defensive maneuvers instead of serving or rotating to the front line. Platt has played other positions in the past, but she said the excitement of making a last-second save and diving to keep the ball in play makes her a libero at heart. The position also allows Platt to be quick on her feet and go toeto-toe with players who have a height advantage. “You don’t have to be as tall as everyone else to play volleyball, but I finally found the position that my size is perfect for,” added Platt.
Platt doesn’t only credit her athletic success to her love of the game and a specialized skillset. “My faith is a big part of my volleyball career,” said Platt. “Everything I do is for Jesus; I play for Him on the court.”

cues from slowcore and screamo conventions. The 12-track release showcased Ludewig’s glittery guitar melodies and Alicea’s poignant delivery of spoken-word poetry; the dreamlike combination is anchored by Copeland’s vigorous but surgically precise drumming.

of hard work as a band and the personal growth of its members, and the five-song EP separates itself from Fragile Like Life After’s earlier releases with an entirely new approach. Although shorter than the band’s first two albums, “A Long Look At A Short Distance” doesn’t waste a second; the songs are sequentially structured and work together to tell one story. “It felt like the most collaboratively we’ve ever written something,” Alicea said. “I filled in on bass, but my contribution was more lyrical. Max took initiative in writing the guitar riffs, and Chris helped structure the songs and flesh them out.”

In November 2022, Fragile Like Life After released its sophomore album, “(I Don’t Think They’re Coming).” The band became an active player in Lancaster’s music scene and the East Coast DIY circuit with frequent local shows and its first tour, and the 10-track album reflects Fragile Like Life After’s increasingly cohesive sound. “(I Don’t Think They’re Coming)” introduced gripping vocals screamed by Alicea to Ludewig’s lead vocals and the driving riffs that defined its debut.
“Sonically and lyrically, (‘A Long Look At A Short Distance’) is a lot more concise than the other stuff. The songs flow into each other,” Copeland added.

Three years of touring and recording sharpened Fragile Like Life After’s edge and allowed its members to refine both their sound and their dynamic as a band. The trio’s live shows became increasingly electric; Fragile Like Life After’s sets typically feature Ludewig’s rowdy engagement of the crowd while Alicea and Copeland remain individually locked in an intense showdown with their respective instruments.
“A Long Look At A Short Distance” is the product of three years
“From the start, it was (Alicea’s) idea to write something that doesn’t stop,” Ludewig said. “They said to me at one point, ‘I don’t want to talk during our set at all. I want to say hello, play our songs and say goodbye. (‘A Long Look At A Short Distance’) is not just five songs; this is a piece of work.”
