Wesley United Methodist Church (UMC), 40 W. Main St., Strasburg, will host a holiday bazaar and cookie sale on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Members of the congregation will sell various Christmas items such as decorations and ornaments during the free-to-attend event. The bazaar is a new addition to Wesley UMC’s tradition of holding a yearly cookie sale.
“We were cleaning out decorations from storage at the church and the idea blossomed from there,” said Kay Graybill, an organizer of the event. Church members will sell a variety of homemade cookies during the bazaar, including the community favorite sand tarts. Last year, the vendors sold out of cookies within a few hours.
Wesley UMC also announced that its Christmas pageant will return this year, after a six-year hiatus. The pageant will be held on Friday, Dec. 9, and Saturday, Dec. 10, at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, Dec. 11, at 4:30 p.m. The pageant will include a live, indoor re-enactment of the
Nativity and will be accompanied by narration and music.
Members of the congregation of varying ages will play the roles of angels, shepherds, village children, King Herod and the Holy Family. “We’re very excited to welcome it back,” said Graybill. “I always loved the tradition of it. When I was a little girl, I was in the pageant. Now my granddaughters and grandsons will be in it.”
The tradition of the Christmas pageant was started in 1955, and it continued until 2017, as the church no longer had enough children to participate. A key factor in the decision to halt the re-enactment was the church’s inability to cast an infant in the role of baby Jesus. Children w ho had played Jesus and other roles in recent
years were too old to play the same parts, and the church did not have enough young families still active in the congregation. Wesley UMC’s plans to bring the pageant back last year were thwarted by the
COVID-19 pandemic. This year, the church has enough young members to bring the pageant back.
For many in the community, the pageant marks the beginning of
their holiday season, and news of its return was met with a wave of excitement. “It’s always been a part of everyone’s holiday, and we look forward to working on it together as a group again,” said Graybill.

In October, Poiema Visual Arts introduced Sketch It! Sunday, a new program that partnered with multiple local churches to connect with members of the community via visual learning techniques. The organization invited churches across Pennsylvania to participate by providing the churches with drawing paper and writing utensils and encouraging them to invite members of their congregations to sketch and take notes during the service. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will once again welcome the holiday season with its annual Christmas With the Conductor events on Saturdays, Dec. 3 and 10, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. There will be a set fee per child in addition to regular museum admission, and the activity is recommended for children over the age of 3.
As guests arrive at the museum, a conductor will greet them in the lobby and lead them to one of many historic railroad cars. Once inside, the conductor will read the Christmas story “The Polar Express” to children. After the story is finished, the conductor will take the party to Jack Frost Station, where everyone will decorate their own gingerbread cookies and receive a small goodie bag to wrap up the event. Guests will have an opportunity to participate in many other seasonal activities before and after Christmas With the Conductor: live holiday music will be played throughout the museum, messages will be telegraphed to the North Pole, and children may take a photo with Santa.

Whitaker 4th in States - Pioneers 5th as a Team
BY MONA STEINHAUER
After a second place finish at the District Three Championships at Big Spring High School, the Lampeter-Strasburg boys’ cross country team set its sights on the PIAA Championships. On an unseasonably warm Saturday, November 5, the Pioneers competed at Hershey’s Parkview course where they turned in some solid performances despite falling short in their quest for gold.
As a team, the Pioneers finished in 5th place with 185 total places. Grove City, with three sophomores placing in the top 30, was the overall winner (67 places). Wyomissing, the District 3 champs, slipped to 11th place.
“It’s a big deal to be at states,” said head coach Mari Cunningham. “There are teams from all over the state and A LOT of people. Everyone gave their best efforts.
“It was definitely a plus for the day to beat Wyomissing,” she continued. “The weather was warmer than we’ve been used to
recently which made a hard course even more challenging.”
Colin Whitaker continued to lead the Pioneers and finished in fourth place with a 16:18.9, just over three seconds better than his sixth-place finish as a sophomore a year ago and just .4 seconds out of third place. That went to Juniata senior Logan Strawser. Rory Lieberman, a Danville Area senior, topped the field with a 15:53.6.
“Colin was also voted as the League Runner of the Year,” Cunningham pointed out. “The coaches vote and look at the regular season, league meet and post season. He definitely deserves this award.”
Also finishing in the medal round and contributing to the Pioneer’s fifth place team finish was Ben Devine. The senior clocked a 16:57.8, good for 17th place and improved upon last years’ efforts - a 31st place finish in 17:16.4.
“Ben ran faster Saturday than at the Hershey Invitational and getting a medal at states was a great way to complete his senior
year,” Cunningham said.
Parker Stoner followed in 43rd place with a 17:45.7 with junior Luke Smith, who dropped 36 seconds and moved up 101 places, finishing with an 18:27 (89th place). Owen Witmer, a junior, rounded out the counting five with a 20:02.4 (201st).
Michael Colosi chipped in with a 20:16.7 (206th place). He was the 19th freshman to cross the finish line. Andrew Cramer’s 22:26 completed the lineup.
Representing the girls’ team and making her debut performance at the PIAA championships was Keira Smecker. The sophomore settled for 116th place with a 22:33.
ALL-STARS
The volleyball team recently named three all-stars with Emily Mullin (First Team), Jenna Hoover (Second Team) and Grace Schonour (Academic All-Star) receiving recognition.
Mullin, a four-year starter on varsity and two-time captain, was a first team all-star as a junior and a second teamer as a sophomore. She finished the sea-
Project Receives Wildlife Grant
The Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), with the recommendation and support of the Sierra ClubLancaster Group, applied for and was awarded a Huplits Wildlife Grant of $9,800. The grant will focus on a wildlife habitat revitalization project at MCC’s 9-acre campus in Akron.
In tandem with the eradication of invasive species, the project will provide educational opportunities for local schools, community groups, and other organizations, as well as research projects for young adults
that concentrate on the restoration of woodland. Currently, MCC, whose campus is strategically landscaped to promote biodiversity, offers children and community groups hands-on education that promotes healthy forests, native plants, wildlife, solar energy, and water conservation.
The grants are subsidized by the private Myrtle Huplits and Woodman Huplits Foundation of Yardley, which was founded in 1991 and most recently had more than $1.8 million in revenue. Sierra Club entities, as
well as non-Sierra Club organizations in Pennsylvania that share similar goals with Sierra Club groups and/or the Sierra Club - Pennsylvania Chapter, can participate in the competition.
For more information about MCC’s project, email katrinalefever @mcc.org. Complete details regarding the grants competition can be found by visiting www.sierraclub .org and searching for Huplits Wildlife Grant at the bottom of the home page.
son with 349 assists and 38 aces and had a hitting average of .370. “Emily is a great all-around player, leader, competitive and intrinsically motivated,” said head coach Sharon Mullin.
Hoover, also a captain this year, finished with a .250 hitting average and collected 114 kills
and 56 blocks. She was a second team all-star last year and played varsity for four years. “Jenna works hard, is reliable and flexible at playing different positions,” Mullin said.
Schonour was the National Honor Society president this year and a NHS member last year. She

The Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy in Lancaster city will present its 29th annual performance of “The Nutcracker” on Friday, Dec. 2, at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 3, at 1 and 6 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 4, at 2:30 p.m. The performances will take place at the High Performing Arts Center at Lancaster Mennonite School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. A portion of the proceeds will be designated to help Ukrainian dancers who have been affected by the war.
The story for the ballet was adapted from the book “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” written by E.T.A. Hoffman in 1816. Pyotr Tchaikovsky composed the score for the ballet, and the first performance took place in 1892.
This upcoming performances will showcase new choreography and professional international ballerinas. Eighty-three local dancers ages 4 to 18 from more than 10 Lancaster County dance schools are part of this year’s cast. Rehearsals
began in mid-August, and the students will perform alongside professional dancers from Lancaster, New York, Ukraine and Japan.
The show’s artistic director, Viktor Yeliohin, is assisted by Alexandra Bube, a senior at Manheim Township High School. She is one of two dancers playing the part of Clara in the shows, and she choreographed a large portion of Act II.
The theater has wheelchair-accessible seating.
A range of ticket prices is available, with discounts for seniors, veterans, and students who choose seats on the main floor. Tickets may be purchased at the door, or readers may purchase reserved seating tickets in advance by calling 610-914-3663 or visiting www.vyballet.com/ performances/nutcracker. Ticketing questions may be sent to vyibanutcrackertickets@gmail.com.
The Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy will perform “The Nutcracker.”

“We wanted to share a tool to reach visual learners,” said Jeremy Miller, founder and CEO of Poiema Visual Arts. “The activity has the potential to greatly impact creatives. For the analytical, they can take written notes, and those who don’t want to participate have nothing to worry about, as the services haven’t changed at all.” Some churches elected to participate on one specific Sunday that aligned with their schedules in October, and others participated every Sunday of the month.
Poiema Visual Arts began by sending over 200 letters that invited churches to participate, and seven churches across four different counties stepped forward to use the technique.
Miller noted that one participating church expressed a desire to integrate Sketch It! Sundays more frequently and asked about other creatively guided opportunities for its congregants. A member of Poiema’s board of directors, who is a pastor at a church that utilized the program, said she was pleasantly surprised at the number of church members who participated and were excited to share their artwork after the service.
“I’m a pastor myself, and we like it when people look up at us during the service, but when that person leaves with that enthusiasm and realizes that this is an option for them to continue learning, what we’ve done is create a disciple of Christ,” said Miller. Miller
has a background in the arts and Christian education, and for several years he struggled to combine his passion for art with his Christian faith.
Over two decades ago, Miller taught at Lancaster Bible College and first began to dream of creating a place for visual artists to engage with Scripture. He started laying the foundation for what he called “biblical creative theology,” as his life took him down many different paths. Miller spent time teaching overseas, attended seminary in Virginia and briefly lived in Texas before returning to Lancaster County. As his sons grew older,
Miller realized that he needed a new direction, as he would no longer need to homeschool them. “(God) gave me permission to take that box of metaphorical dreams off of the shelf and go through them,” said Miller.
Poiema Visual Arts was officially incorporated and opened its membership program in October 2021. The organization is currently based in Strasburg but is involved with churches across the county and beyond, including areas such as Hempfield, Manheim Township and York.
