he Thanksgiving Day community meal is becoming a tradition at Lampeter United Methodist Church (UMC). Started in 2024, around two dozen volunteers give up a large chunk of their Thanksgiving Day to make sure that others will not go hungry, and have some fellowship in the process. Last year, 114 meals were served. “Our focus is to try and get people in here in communion with each other, having a Thanksgiving meal together,” said Anne Reinert, who helps organize the event along with Sheila Moore. “There’s a lot of people who are alone, people who don’t have families. Even people who do have families, maybe they don’t want to cook.” The free meal will be hosted at the church, 1101 Village Road, Lancaster, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday,

On Sept. 28, Heinly was sworn in as the department’s eighth chief of police.

Steven Heinly is making history inside of the West Lampeter Township Police Department. On Sept. 28, Heinly was sworn in as the department’s eighth chief of police, becoming the first chief to be promoted from within the department. He succeeds Brian Wiczkowski, who served in the position for the past 12 years. Heinly, a resident of the township, started with the department in 1997 after graduating from Penn State University with a degree in administration of justice.

Since arriving in West Lampeter, Heinly has been promoted to roles such as detective, detective sergeant and lieutenant. Now, he has the department’s top job. Since West Lampeter Township launched its own police department in 1950, there have only been eight officers that have held the prestigious position. “It’s actually kind of neat that they entrusted me to take over,” Heinly said. “I take a lot of pride in that. driving force behind the department’s now-defunct bicycle patrol program; he could often be found patrolling on a bicycle at Kendig Square and other Willow Street neighborhoods. “When I first did an internship with State College (Police Department) when I was in college, they had a bike patrol unit,” Heinly explained. “I followed them around on a couple shifts, and I just thought that was something that would benefit the community. ... You get out from behind the patrol car, you ride through the neighborhoods. There’s no barriers with the police car, so more people opt to talk to you.” Heinly explained that ever since he was a kid, he knew he wanted to be a police officer. He looked up to the officers from his community and pursued further education to become like them. Along with his undergraduate degree from Penn State, he also obtained a master’s degree in justice administration from Norwich University in Vermont in 2007. “I’m a people person,” he said. “I like making contacts out in the community, talking to people.

When I was on patrol, I remember stopping and playing basketball with some of the kids that were in the neighborhoods shooting hoops at night.” Heinly has spent some time outside of the department, working part time with Elizabethtown Police Department and for the county. But he never left West Lampeter. Heinly has invested nearly three decades into the township. Now, it is investing back into him. “My upbringing was, you find

a place you like and make it your home,” he said. “The saying is that the grass is greener on the other side, but I always thought we were the green grass.” The department also recently announced Evan Shubrooks’ promotion to the rank of sergeant. Shubrooks joined the department in 2015 and has since received commendations for combatting aggressive driving, distracted driving, speeding, and impaired driving.

Program to Highlight One-Room Schools Leona Baker will present “How They Learned Their ABCs” at the Strasburg Heritage Society’s meeting on Monday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St. “How They Learned Their ABCs” is based on Baker’s book of the same name. The book is dedicated to the memory of the students who attended one-room public schools in the 18th through 20th centuries and to the teachers who, each day, balanced the education of up to 50 children scattered among all eight grades of primary schooling. Baker was a relative newcomer to Salisbury Township in 1962, and her family of five children just missed the one-room schools of former years. As a Cub Scout leader, she met parents whose families had been living in Lancaster County for more than five generations, and through these families she learned about the one-room schools. The idea to write a book on the subject occurred to her when she retired in 2010. The program is free and open to the public. Prizes will be given to all children under age 14 who attend. Refreshments will be served after the program.

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will offer a “Night Photography at the Museum” class on Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Noted railroad photographer and author Brian Solomon will share techniques and practical perspectives on how to take more effective railroad nighttime photos, and there will be hands-on photography opportunities in the museum’s main hall. Solomon earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photographic illustration from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He is the author of more than 70 books, he produces a daily blog about railroad photography, and his articles and photography have been printed in many railway magazines. Solomon was presented with the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society’s Fred A. & Jane R. Stindt Photography Award in 2020 for his lifetime achievements in railroad photography. Solomon is the marketing manager for New Hampshire’s Conway Scenic Railroad and lives with his wife, Kris, in Lancaster County. “(Smith) said to run with it, so we did it, and then did it again last year, and then we’re going to do it again this year,” said Reinert. “We do it as much through donations as we can.” Reinert and Moore said that some of the church’s families have even moved their own Thanksgiving meal to the church as part of the community meal. All are welcome at the meal, and attendance at the church is not a requirement or expected. “Everyone is welcome,” Moore said. “(The church) is welcoming everybody and accepting, which is how it should be.” More information about the church and its programming can be found by visiting the aforementioned website.
