Southern End moms stick together BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

When Aubrie Fry of Christiana was pregnant with her son, she attended a Lititz Stroller Gang meeting with her friend Becca Leboon. The group comprises mothers from across the county who regularly gather to go for a walk and exchange mother-tomother support. Fry loved the idea, but she realized there was no equivalent to the Lititz Stroller Gang in the Southern End. In the months following the birth of her son, Fry found herself struggling with postpartum challenges, and she decided it was time for the Southern End to have its own support group for mothers. Fry reached out to Leboon and a few other friends to help with the logistics of creating the group and setting up its Facebook page. Fry also reached out to the leader of the Lititz Stroller Gang for advice. “She told me that if it was something God led me to, then people would show up,” Fry said.

Fry and her friends held their first meeting last July, calling themselves the Southern End Strollers. The group meets every Tuesday at 9 a.m., and the location the meetings alternates to include parks in different areas. The moms rotate through a list of parks that includes Daniel’s Den in Central Manor, Jaycee Park in Strasburg and Huffnagle Park in Quarryville. The location is coordinated by the Southern End Strollers’ members via the group ’s Facebook and Instagram pages. Since its first meeting, the Southern End Strollers’ number of members has been steadily increasing; the weekly walks are now attended by twice as many mothers as they were in July, and the Facebook group has grown to include more than 140 members. In addition to selecting the location, the Southern End Strollers’ social media features a member every week. Jenn Knepper knows a good idea when she sees one. Sixteen years ago, Knepper read about a unique gift fair being staged in Harrisburg by a women’s group. She reached out to the group, and after some thought, she came to the conclusion that the concept would be something that could benefit the Lancaster County community as well. Fast forward to 2023 and the annual Gifts That Give Hope

(GTGH) alternative gift fair is alive, well and thriving. The event is known for its ability to bring nonprofits together, its unique approach to gift giving and its propensity for fostering hope. “We want people to think more about the things they buy and what goes into them,” said Knepper. “The gift fair is a connection point for people to find out about people who are working to make the world a better place. I describe it as a live version of a gift catalog, except you walk into the event. We want people

This year, Britain Hill will use the funds raised by Vines for Veterans to support two organizations: the Pequea Valley Cemeteries branch of Wreaths Across America and Warriors on the Water Ltd. Wreaths Across America coordinates an annual ceremony to lay wreaths on the graves of veterans as a way to honor their memories and remember their service. Warriors on the Water Ltd. is a nonprofit located in Kirkwood that

offers free outdoor recreational services to military veterans and first responders. The organization’s goal is to provide relaxing and therapeutic activities such as fishing and kayaking to those who experience trauma or other complications as a result of their service. “We chose to support these specific organizations as a way to tie Veterans Day into the event’s theme, since it also takes place in November,” Helm said. Britain Hill will also hold a guest bartending event at its Lampeter location, 1702 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, on Friday, Nov. 17. From 6 to 9 p.m., members of Wreaths Across America will serve drinks and explain the work they do in the organization. and she thought the show was great. I spoke to the kids, and they were very excited. They wanted something that would be challenging and have a powerful message. Many of these kids are ‘actor’s actors,’ and they wanted to delve into character and emotion.” Bartlett noted that the venue is not a traditional stage but a black box theater, which is a more intimate performing space. “That is a very unique experience for students because normally they perform on a stage in an auditorium,” Bartlett noted. “Most kids do not have the experience of performing in a black box theater, and it’s a very intimate show. For HOPE International, money can buy happiness BY JEFF FALK

$1.2 million. That’s a bag of loot. That’s some serious bank. That’s a loaf of bread. That’s the amount of money that HOPE International, 227 Granite Run Drive, Suite 250, Lancaster, recently raised with its 23rd annual golf outing. The Manheim Township-based nonprofit will put those dollars to good use in the form of loans, investments and assistance to financially challenged individuals and families around the globe. “We’re excited about the impact we are having,” said HOPE International founder Jeff Rutt. “That money will impact thousands and thousands of lives. Small loans can empower families to have dignity instilled in their lives. With the families we serve, we really believe God has put each of them in our hands.” “A lot of people like to golf, and a lot of people want to impact lives around the world,” Rutt continued. “This is a vehicle. It’s a way to network together, have a

great time outdoors and at the same time drive out poverty. It’s a fun way of fundraising.” The outing was conducted at three separate golf courses Iron Valley Golf Club in Lebanon, Wyncote Golf Club in Oxford and Turf Valley Golf Club in Ellicott City, Md. - in the middle of September. Some 350 players participated. “It’s small businesses who want to get involved, and they’ll send folks on their team,” said Rutt. “Sometimes the golfers may not even be aware of what the owner of their company is doing. They may not even be aware the company is involved with helping lives around the world. It’s a great way to get involved.” The 2023 version of the HOPE International golf outing raised about $200,000 more than last year’s. The event pulled in $951,444 in 2021 and raised more than $625,000 the year prior. Over the years, the golf outing has collected more than $7 million in donations. “We started very small at the beginning, but we’ve been building on it,” said Rutt. “I

think philanthropy in general has changed over the 23 years. It used to be, ‘We need to send our money.’ But I’ve seen a shift where the world has become smaller.” “The way (the outing) has grown is tied to the impact,” added Rutt. “If something works, the word spreads. Like, ‘Hey, I want to get behind something that’s growing.’ And with some of the people we work with, their businesses have grown.” Rutt founded HOPE International in 1997, and a year later the organization’s first loans were dispersed in Ukraine. In 2004, Peter Greer

became HOPE International’s president, and in that same year it distributed its 10,000th loan. From its founding to the current time, HOPE International has aided 2.7 million families in 24 countries around the world with $1.7 billion in loans. “In the beginning, I had no idea what I was doing,” said Rutt. “I wanted to help, but I didn’t know how to help. Furever Home Adoption Center will host its ninth annual Holiday Shopping Fair on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will be held at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Proceeds will benefit Furever Home and Pet Pantry of Lancaster County. More than 100 vendors will be present at the shopping fair to sell a variety of goods, such as handmade crafts, jewelry, soaps, clothing, blankets and Christmas decorations. Although the majority of the vendors are based within Lancaster County, a few merchants from Harrisburg will join the roster this year. Staff members from the Pet Pantry will sell hot food, baked goods and beverages throughout the day. The first 100 guests to arrive will receive a free entry in a prize drawing, which will include items donated by the fair’s participating vendors, local businesses and individuals throughout the community. Gift cards, gift baskets and pet-related goods will be among the prizes given out during the drawing. The shopping fair was started by Tina Krueger, who vol-

unteers at both Furever Home and Pet Pantry. When Krueger initially became involved with Furever Home, the shelter did not have anyone to manage its fundraising operations. Due to the combination of Krueger’s professional background in marketing and her love for animals, she volunteered immediately and started to plan the first shopping fair. “I felt I had good resources and connections because of my background, plus it kept me out of the shelters so I didn’t take all the animals home,” Krueger said. At first, the fair was held at Four Seasons Golf Club. The event’s immediate success and sustained growth required Krueger to move it to a larger location, and it is now held at the Farm and Home Center annually. “Of course, you always have the folks who just want to support the shelters, both of which do a lot for the community,” Krueger said. “But people also come for a really good shopping experience. I pride myself on having a huge variety of vendors every year.” Furever Home is a no-kill, cage-free animal rescue located in East Petersburg. Although its facility can only
