“Veterans, Values, and Voices: Words in Search of Our Missing Peace II” will showcase the veteran experience through art, poetry, music, and storytelling. The event, which was first held in 2018, will be hosted by Writeface at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10.

Writeface co-founder Scott Hower, who is an Air Force veteran and a Conestoga resident, noted that the event was created after Lancaster’s Spoken Word Festival was discontinued.

conjunction with the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts, so creating a similar event seemed like a natural fit.

“We picked it up as a way for veterans to tell their stories the way they want to tell them,” said Writeface co-founder Annie Ginder of Willow Street.

At the event on Nov. 10, about 14 or 15 people will participate in some way. The majority are veterans, although Ginder and several other civilians will also be part of the program.

“Everybody knows a veteran,” Hower explained.

Marc Zito, an Army veteran who lives in Ephrata, and East Lampeter Township resident Stephen Shaw, who served in both the Marines and the Army, will reflect on transitions.

The fifth annual Art and Craft Market and Silent Auction hosted by Lampeter United Methodist Church (UMC), 1101 Village Road, Lancaster, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. More than 20 vendors are slated to sell handmade items.

“Come get an early start on your Christmas shopping,” suggested coordinator Mary Dale.

Among the vendors will be Ana Simmons of Ana’s Captivating Designs, who produces sweaters, mittens, hats, and scarves from wool felt. There will be several jewelers, including Lisa Henderson, who creates sterling silver jewelry utilizing carefully selected natural stones. Veterans Day, a federal holiday, is celebrated annually to honor people who have served the United States in the military in war and in times of peace. In accordance with the

holiday, Martic MOST (Military Outreach Support Team) will host its seventh annual Tribute to Veterans on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Marticville Middle School, 356 Frogtown Road, Pequea.

Lancaster County Garden Club program chair Bob Davis is eagerly anticipating Teri Dunn Chace’s presentation at the group’s annual fall banquet, which will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, at Four Seasons Golf Course, 949 Church St., Landisville. Bob heard Chace speak in Philadelphia last year.

Chace, who divides her time between farm country in central New York and a bay home in Nova Scotia, is a prolific writer.

The Lancaster County Garden Club is in its 85th year - its name was changed from Men’s Garden Club about 15 years ago - and it continually welcomes new members. Residence in Lancaster County is not a requirement of club membership. Currently, 142 people belong to the club, which meets on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at Salem United Church of Christ of Rohrerstown, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. A program is held each month, except for August, when the club hosts its annual corn roast, which began in the group’s second year. Guests are welcome to attend club events, with donations accepted for program attendance.

Every meeting includes a show table where attendees may exhibit flowers, artwork, or anything else related to gardening. A number of members participate in area flower shows, Bob noted.

The club also offers garden tours and takes field trips.

The club focuses on education, and Master Gardeners can earn education credits by attending programs. Bob is particularly excited about next year’s presentation slate.

“I called six ringers and got them all,” Bob said.

The Lancaster County Garden Club also has a commitment to civic projects that enhance beauty and livability of the area. Most notably, the group planted and maintains the rose garden in Lancaster city’s Buchanan Park.

The program will begin in the school’s auditorium at 9:30 a.m. “ We are very excited this year as the Liberty Warbird Association will be flying over and landing their refurbished Huey 823 helicopter at the event,” said Martic MOST member Sandy Musselman.

“This helicopter has become an iconic symbol to the Vietnam War and well-known to our Vietnam veterans.”

According to www.liberty warbirds.com, the UH-1 aircraft flew for the 170th AHC and Company C 101st Avn Bn 101st Airborne in Vietnam during 1968 and 1969. It was brought to Lancaster in the mid-2010s and was restored in order to

educate the public about the impact of the machines, honor Vietnam veterans, and serve as a catalyst for veterans to tell their stories, some for the first time. Huey 823 will be flown to the Tribute to Veterans weather permitting.

The event will be attended by Tim Wright, a veteran who served in Vietnam, Desert Shield, and Desert Storm. He will once again exhibit his Wall of Fallen Heroes of the Mid-Atlantic States. Wright began the project in 2003 to ensure that those who lost their lives in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts are recognized and remembered.

The program will also include Solanco High School alumnus Col. Philip Atkinson; a “Fireside Chat” with Afghanistan conflict

“I haven’t heard anyone else speak on this topic,” Bob commented. “These are seeds like you’ve never seen them before.”

There will be opportunities to win prizes at the banquet, and many will have a garden theme. A social hour with a cash bar will run from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and then the buffet dinner will start at 6:30 p.m.

The menu will include Virginia baked ham, roast turkey, mashed potatoes, glazed carrots, tossed salad, coleslaw, fresh fruit, rolls, and assorted desserts. Beverages will include coffee, iced tea, and fruit punch. Vegetarian meals will be available upon request.

“In 20 years in the military, (my life) used to be go, go, go, but now I have stopped,” Zito remarked, adding that he has gone from a highly scheduled life to uncertainty. “Now I’m wrapping my mind around that.”

Shaw agreed. “It’s a cultural transition,” he said. “You go from civilian life to the military and back to civilian life. Before you moved away from home, you had support, and in the military, you had support. Now (that) you’re out, you have to do it on your own. It can be overwhelming.”

Writeface’s process helps individuals clarify their thoughts by putting everything on paper and then reviewing and reflecting. Army veteran Karl Dunkleberger of Mount Joy has been part of Writeface for five years, and he has learned and grown through the experience. “My content is more focused and concentrated, thanks to Scott. He gave me freedom not to worry about my

spelling,” Dunkleberger commented. “Annie has given me lightness to my artwork. It balances out the darkness.”

In contrast to Dunkleberger’s longevity, Chieu Le of Lancaster is new to Writeface. He has been speaking at area high schools about his Vietnam War experiences as a member of the Vietnamese air force and later the United States Army. “I escaped communism in Vietnam at the last minute and was embraced by the warm arms of the United States,” Le said.

Navy medic Gerrie Strobel now lives in Windsor and gladly comes to Lancaster for Writeface programs. She feels strongly about Agent Orange awareness and advocates for survivors of the dangerous chemical.. “There’s so much more to be said about it,” Strobel said, citing Agent Orange side effects and untreated PTSD as challenges taking a toll on Vietnam veterans and the inspirations for artwork that she

will exhibit in the Nov. 10 event.

Admission to “Veterans, Values, and Voices” will be free of charge. The event will take place in the Ware Center’s 400-seat Steinman Hall, and the organizers hope to have a capacity crowd. “We want them to see the value of what we’re doing with the veteran community and be more inclined to support it,” Ginder said.

“It’s all about getting a better (sense) of the veteran experience, getting the general public to understand that in a better way,” Hower remarked, adding that he plans to speak about the time he accidentally wandered into an anti-war rally in Chicago while wearing a military uniform in 1972.

“This is where we make the most profit, and several of our crafters donate good-quality items so we can get higher bids,” Mary said, adding that proceeds from the event will help the Villa Fontane church in Puerto Rico, which was heavily damaged during Hurricane Maria.

“One of our parishioners grew up in that church, and we are now partnering with (the congregation),” Mary explained. “ We have sent two work (groups) there in the past two years and may send one in 2020.

Meanwhile, we are also helping them with funds to restore the church.”

The members of the United Methodist Women will run a food café and sell baked goods during the Art and Craft Market.

“Their breakfast sandwiches are always a big favorite,” Mary commented. “They will have their homemade soups for sale too.”

The American Heart Association, an organization focused on heart and brain health, invites women from across Lancaster County to the ninth annual Pursenalities Party. The silent purse auction to raise funds and awareness for the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Eden Resort, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster.

Designer purses from names like Coach, Kate Spade, and Michael Kors donated by local individuals and businesses will be up for auction. The event will also include hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.

In addition to benefiting the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement, proceeds from the event will be used toward a gift of infant CPR kits to a local hospital. Last year’s event raised $13,000 and helped fund a donation of a year’s supply of Infant CPR Anytime Kits and other resources to WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital.

The Pursenalities Party is chaired by Taylor Rotay, business development representative at Paul Davis Restoration.

Two events will herald the start of the Christmas season at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville.

The annual holiday bazaar held by the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Women (MOPW) will take place on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ten vendors will sell an array of items, including amigurumi (crocheted animals and other characters), cards and stationery, homemade jellies, home décor, and wooden decorations. Crocheted, quilted, and sewn items will be available as well. Door prizes will be awarded every half-hour, with the prizes donated by vendors in lieu of paying a fee to participate.

A crafting supplies room will be new this year. MOPW member Nancy Harnish explained its origin, familiar to many a crafter. “Marlene (Fromm) and I bought a bunch (of supplies) at a sale for dirt cheap, and we had grandiose ideas, but we never got around to it,” she said.

The kitchen will offer Middle Octorara Muffins - breakfast sandwiches containing bacon, eggs, and cheese - to start the day. The lunch menu will include an assortment of soups, beef barbecue, and hot

dogs. Soft pretzels will return for the second year, as they went over well last year, said MOPW member Shirley Miller. The group will try adding turkey barbecue to the menu this year as a way to use the leftover meat from the turkey supper held earlier this month. Miller noted that although 400 people were served at the dinner, the unexpected boon of receiving boneless meat from a new supplier resulted in more net meat than expected.

There will also be a baked goods table with cookies, cakes, pies, and other sweet treats, including peanut butter balls. “Boy, people go (wild) for those things,” Miller said of the nutty delights.

During Trains and Troops, an array of military and military railroad servicerelated vehicles, uniforms, equipment, field gear, maps, books, photographs, memorabilia, and collectibles will be on display from participating exhibitors, as well as items from the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s archives. Visitors also will encounter military, civilian, and railroader living history re-enactors from various eras in the nation’s history throughout the museum.

Cross is a musician, comedian, and magician based in York.

Originally from California, he is an alumnus of the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, where he began playing music and acting in stage productions. While still in high school, he began working as a professional magician, and shortly after graduating, he was booking music and comedy club gigs in New York.

Cross settled in York in 2011, portraying Judas in “Jesus Christ Superstar” at the Strand-Capitol (Appell Center) the same year. In 2013, he joined the Big Dogs of Comedy Tour, which performed

at locations owned by Heritage Hills. In 2014, he appeared on FOX 43 performing his music.

Cross released his debut album, “Here’s the Skinny,” in 2016. In 2017, Cross combined his music, magic and comedy in “RISE,” a solo show at The Pullo Center, which raised $2,500 for NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) York.

In 2018, Elijah began giving random fans 10% to 20% of the payment he receives at gigs. He was a featured performer at the Cola Comedy Con in Columbia, S.C.; was invited by NBCUniversal to perform for its annual talent search; and was one of 32 comics from around the world selected for the 39th annual Seattle International Comedy Competition.

He graduated from Lancaster Bible College before moving to Wilmore, Ky., where he graduated from Asbury Theological Seminary. In addition to the SRM, Guot founded a separate nonprofit that is overseeing the purchase of land and the building of a civic and religious center in Bor. Guot has recently published his story, “The Lost Boy Is Found, A Lost Boy’s Story of Faith, Hope, Charity, and Love.”

Guot and Kroehler, along with many friends from First United Methodist Church and the Lancaster area, created SRM to support the education and development of South Sudanese people.

SRM is particularly interested in helping students who have been orphaned because of the civil unrest in the country and is committed to serving the promising students of South Sudan.

Sudan Rebirth Ministry’s (SRM) sixth annual banquet will feature the ambassador of the Republic of South Sudan to the United States, Philip Jada Natana, as the guest speaker.

Natana, who has extensive diplomatic experience, was involved during the creation of South Sudan in 2011. He assumed his current post in Washington, D.C., in September 2018. Jacob Guot, founder of SRM, will also be a featured guest at this year’s banquet.

The fundraiser will be held Friday, Nov. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Celebration Center of First United Methodist Church, 29 E. Walnut St., Lancaster. The goal of the event is to specifically raise educational scholarship funds for South Sudanese students from kindergarten through college in order to prepare them to be citizens, leaders, and Christians in the world’s newest country. The field hockey team’s post season included the highest of highs and the lowest of lows as their season came to a close last Wednesday, Oct. 23, with a 3-1 loss to Donegal in the District Three Class 2A opener at Penn Manor’s Comet Field.

L-S was coming in with plenty of momentum, having captured their first ever L-L League Championship on Saturday, Oct. 19 (more on that later) while Donegal was coming in with a fire after getting bounced from the L-L League tournament on the same Comet Field. What transpired Wednesday night was not what head coach

Katrina Swarr expected.

“Compared to Saturday, we looked flat,” stated Swarr. “However, Donegal was crazy fast and aggressive so I’m not sure we were flat. We certainly could not find the rhythm that we had for the two games prior. We were hesitant! And the only way to explain that is to blame it on the mental game,” she continued. “I have no idea why playing Donegal, and playing on PM’s field, seem to be such a big deal to us. We played them so well the first two games, but this one was hard to follow.”

The No. 9 seed Indians defeated L-S in a 4-3 thriller at Lampeter on Sept. 10 and then topped the No. 8 seed 4-0 on their home field 20 days later.

Donegal set the tone early, not only taking the first shot but working the first five corners of the game. Midway through the first half, L-S forced a pair of corners but came up empty. Their second breakdown actually led to a breakaway and an eventual penalty stroke which Morgan Saunders converted for the first tally of the game with 7:13 left.

Four minutes later they doubled the lead when Regan Clark collected a pass that crossed the front of the cage.

“I’m not sure the stroke was the correct call but my angle was not the best,” said Swarr. “Then, when they scored that second goal, it was an adrenalin/confidence killer.”

corner and a hard reverse hit by Julz Garber from the top of the circle that did not find the back of the cage.

The Pioneers opened the second half with renewed energy, forcing three corners in the first five minutes but couldn’t break through. Donegal returned the favor with four consecutive corners and the L-S defense rose to the challenge, stopping each attempt, including a defensive save from Keiva Middleton.

Then, with 8:28 left, Saunders received the insert on Donegal’s seventh corner and crushed it to the back of the cage for a 3-0 advantage.

“With seven minutes left I called that timeout and told them that I

absolutely believe in them, but that it was looking a little bleak,” Swarr recalled. “I encouraged them to be sure they had no regrets when they left the field - to leave it all on the field. I could not have been more proud of how they ended the game.

They worked until the last horn.”

L-S earned the final corner of the night with 1:20 on the clock. Daisy Frank inserted the ball to Jocelyn Branco who dished a pass to Chloe Blantz for the score from the left side.

“I’m sure I will never have the pleasure of coaching such a wonderful group of girls like this again,” said Swarr. “The difference with this group is their desire to be a team. We certainly wanted to win, but the tears at the end I really believe were less about the loss and more about the culmination of a truly outstanding, history making, season. You know they always say, the awards and accolades will eventually be forgotten, but the memories will last a lifetime.”

Four days prior to the district opener, the Pioneers made school history when they earned the school’s first-

ever L-L League field hockey championship, surviving Manheim Township, 2-1 in overtime at Conestoga Valley HS. L-S needed just one minute to light the scoreboard. Blantz carried the ball down the right side and, with a give and go from Frank, shot past a diving Township goalie for the lead.

“Early and often” is what I try to encourage,” said Swarr. “We seem to have gotten the early part down. That sets the tone and heightens our adrenaline.”

The Streaks netted the equalizer just over six minutes into the second half, using a give-and-go off a corner insert to knot the score. Township pressured with four corners down the stretch but keeper Alexis Garett and Middleton preserved the tie, sending the game into overtime.

L-S needed just 3:32 to notch the game-winner. Blantz carried the ball down the left side and sent a shot into the circle where Julia Smecker collected the ball and beat the keeper with a shot that clanked off the backboard.

looked good. I am proud of the way the girls handled themselves. It is not easy to lose by one goal let alone six and the lady Pioneers handled it with pride and class.

“While the girls did not have the season they had hoped for, I know the coaching staff really enjoyed this group of players,” she added. “Results just didn’t seem to add up for us this year, but the level of play the girls exhibited throughout the season was a pleasure to watch. Our senior group (Olivia Vranich, Jordan Marcroft, Mckena Conklin, Sara Doutrich, Emma Houck, Tara Wehibe, Lauren Breneman, Lizzie Adams, Jackie Schultz) will be greatly missed but they are leaving behind a legacy standard of making district playoffs all four years of their high school career.”

FOOTBALL The Pioneers shared the wealth in their 40-13 win at Elizabethtown on October 18. Five different players reached the end zone for L-S who kept pace with Cocalico and Manheim, all sitting at 7-2 overall.

L-S led from start to finish in this Section Two battle and took advantage of three first half turnovers to build a 20-6 lead at the break.

“We had two fumble recoveries and an interception,” said head coach John Manion, “and we didn’t turn the ball over at all. It’s always important to win the turnover war.”

Alex Knapp (54 yards, 10 attempts) was the first Pioneer to reach the end zone. His 15-yard scamper came two plays after Jake Hines recovered that first fumble.

“Brady Cole’s strip sack set up our next TD,” Manion recalled. “Connor Nolt found Ian Herr with a 38-yard pass late in the first quarter.”

E-town closed the gap early in the second quarter with a 12-play drive that ended with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Gilhool to Cole Hitz.

But the Pioneers countered with three unanswered scores to pull away.

Michael DelGrande’s interception led to Tim Martin’s one-yard plunge just before the half. Martin found the end zone again, midway through the third quarter, on a 16-yard scramble and Bryan McKim, who led the team in rushing (165 yards on 26 attempts) scored from nine-yards out to start the fourth.

The Bears stopped Lampeter’s run with another TD toss by Gilhool but the Pioneers had the last say when Owen Fikkert crossed from five-yards away.

Lampeter’s defense was also a shared effort. Logan Bradley led the way with seven tackles with Christian Garver, M. DelGrande and Nick DelGrande recording six each and Cole, Austin Stoltzfus and Jacob Kopelman chipping in with five.

While the 5-0 final score is a bit lopsided, the first half was tight. L-S took a slim 1-0 lead when Alex Baker took the ball to goal, slotted the ball across the six yard box to Gavin Shue who tapped it in for the lead just five minutes in.

“It’s nice to score the opening goal fairly quickly as it helps us set the tone and flow for the game,” said head coach Gino DiSomma. “Both teams had chances in that first half. If we would have capitalized, I felt it would have deflated their confidence but they settled in and also had chances, which could have changed the flow of the game had they scored.

“Coming in, we felt we needed to play to our level of soccer and not our opponents,” he added. “We felt that second loss to Central was a tough pill to swallow but it taught us some valuable lessons.”

L-S added to their lead in the 52nd minute when Luke Kelly’s breakaway opportunity was denied by the Baron’s freshman keeper Dylan Smith (10 saves) but rebounded to Caden Wise who pushed the lead to 2-0. Seth Beers also found the back of the net on a rebound, this one coming on a corner kick just 2:18 later and the flood gates were opening. Max Franco found the back of the net with 19:05 left to play and Joe Frego made it 5-0 seven minutes later.

“Their keeper made some incredible saves,” noted DiSomma. “Central came in with a hunger in their underdog role. That was evident by their fight and grit.”

In Thursday night’s quarterfinal round, the Pioneers hosted another familiar foe in Northern York. The 5th seed Polar Bears broke a scoreless game with what proved to be the game-winner in the 69th minute, ending Lampeter’s season with a 14-6-1 record. The Pioneers had defeated N. York 3-2 in overtime on September 21.

GIRLS’ SOCCER Despite ending the regular season with a 2-1 loss to Elizabethtown and a 3-0 shutout against Ephrata, the lady Pioneer booters qualified for the District Three Class 3A Championship with an overall record of 8-9. They opened their post-season action Monday, October 21st against No. 3 seed Mechanicsburg (16-3) but were eliminated with a deceiving 6-0 loss.

After dropping a 3-1 final against the Wildcats on October 2, the Pioneers knew what they were up against. In a defensive first half, the upset-minded Pioneers matched the Wildcats’ effort despite falling behind 1-0 just 11:11 into the game. That one-goal lead stood as L-S denied Mechanicsburg opportunities through the rest of the half.

The visitors played with renewed energy to start the second half and pinned the hosts in their backfield over the first 14 minutes.

“We had a breakaway around the 54th minute and it looked like we were going to tie the game, but Mechanicsburg handled it well and returned with an extremely quick counter that resulted in their second goal,” recalled head coach Emily Lebo.

“From that moment, Mechanicsburg had the momentum.”

BOYS SOCCER The boys’ soccer team opened postseason play in the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs, getting past Pequea Valley 1-0 in overtime before suffering a 1-0 setback against Manheim Township in the semifinals. The second portion of their post-season got underway last Monday, October 21, as L-S hosted Manheim Central in the first round of the District Three Class 3A tournament.

The No. 4 Pioneers were more than familiar with the Barons, having split the regular season series. L-S defeated Manheim 2-1 on September 9 and the Barons returned the favor with an identical score 17 days later. The Pioneers entered the tournament with a 14-5-1 overall record while the Barons, seeded 13th, were 8-11. And they advanced to Thursday’s quarterfinals with a convincing 5-0 shutout. It was their eighth shutout of the season and matched their season-high for goals scored in a game.

The conference will continue on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m., when the CAHS hosts Will Fenton, director of scholarly innovation at The Library Company of Philadelphia. Fenton will introduce a new graphic novel, “Ghost River: The Fall and Rise of the Conestoga,” which was produced with assistance from Circle Legacy Center, Pew Charitable Trust scholars, and public school teachers. Lancaster newspaper columnist and author Jack Brubaker will discuss the aftermath of the massacre of Conestoga Native Americans in 1763.

A weekend conference staged at two western Lancaster County historical societies will explore the relationships among American Indians and the first Europeans to settle, farm, and trade in central Pennsylvania in the 18th century. A variety of programs will be open to the public without charge.

The conference will begin on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 9 a.m. with the Millersville Area Historical Society’s meeting at the Millersville municipal center, 100 Municipal Drive. Nicole Eustace, professor of history at New York University, will present a program titled “Murder and Mercy on the Susquehanna: Captain Civility of Conestoga Teaches Pennsylvania Colonists New Principles of Justice.”

Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School senior Luke Brodersen was announced as a Semifinalist in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. This academic honor is the result of Luke’s performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) and places him within the top 1% of current high school seniors, including the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

Luke is the son of Glen and Julie Brodersen of Willow Street.

He is a member of the marching band, the concert band, orchestra, tech crew, and the quiz bowl team.

He is a member of the L-S High School National Honor Society and received the Burrowes Scholar Award for mathematics in 11th grade. Luke also volunteers at his church. He plans to study chemical engineering in college.

As one of 16,000 Semifinalists nationwide, Luke is now in the

running to become a Finalist and ultimately a National Merit Scholarship winner. Finalists and award winners will be announced in the spring of 2020.

L-S seniors Douglas Bell and Andrew Bliss have been named Commended Students in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the high school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, was presented by the principal to the students.

The Lampeter-Strasburg High School District’s health department received a $2,000 grant from the Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness (OTDA) Project to help combat the national donor shortage. The grant is run through Lancaster Lebanon IU 13, and funds will be used to raise awareness in the community, especially among new drivers. The Scrub Club (Future Nurses Club) will be helping to raise awareness as its community service project.

According to the OTDA website, more than 7,000 Pennsylvanians are on the transplant waiting list.

The program aims to provide students with the information needed to make informed decisions about organ and tissue donation.

The grant officially kicked off on Sept. 13 at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. Students were encouraged to wear blue and green to school, and the initiative See Donation Awareness pg 15

Malfregeot II (right), senior vice president and market president at BB&T Bank, presented the donation to Lisette Colon, finance manager at YWCA Lancaster. The Pennsylvania EITC Program provides tax credits for corporate contributions to Scholarship Organizations (SOs) or Educational Improvement Organizations (EIO).

Through this program, qualified prekindergarten children receive scholarships for YWCA’s Child Enrichment Center and summer care programs designed to lead to kindergarten readiness and ongoing academic success. Additionally, school-age children are exposed to before- and after-school care, mentoring and support groups, and field trips. Adolescent girls also gain confidence in advanced technology through free school year science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programming and fee-based, two-week summer camp experiences. Lampeter-Strasburg High School social studies teacher Jeffrey Houck was selected by faculty and staff as Teacher of the Quarter for the fourth marking period of the 2018-19 school year. Houck also serves as the senior class adviser and has taught at the school for 18 years. He previously taught at J.P. McCaskey High School for eight years and is originally from New Holland.

Houck currently teaches Introduction to Law, American Government and American Cultures. In his law class, Houck invites guest speakers from every part of the criminal justice and legal world. The students also get a tour of the prison and attend a court trial at Lancaster County Courthouse.
