t’s all about community, love and family coming together. Preparations have begun for the annual performances of the Strasburg Community Christmas Pageant Choir, a 67-year tradition that brings some holiday spirit to the Strasburg community and surrounding areas. “I’ve heard a lot of different community members say that, myself included, the pageant is kind of like the kickoff for the Christmas season for them,” said director Amanda Zahm Monywiir. “It’s the first time that they really get a chance to stop, slow down and really feel immersed in the music and the story of Christmas.” Everyone is welcome to participate in the choir. No formal training or experience is required, said choir director Janet Rawleigh. Five choir rehearsals will be held, taking place on Sunday, Nov. 8, and Sunday, Nov. 15, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 22, from 3 to 5 p.m.; Wednesday, Dec. 2, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 6, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Those interested in joining should contact Zahm Monywiir at ajzahm91@gmail.com or 717-983-8556 prior to the first rehearsal. “This is the second year she’s doing this for us,” Zahm Monywiir said of Rawleigh. “It’s really been a blessing, because I can’t imagine anybody else more qualified to do this, but it’s also because she loves the Strasburg community so

The choir singers are so comfortable with her and really feel that they’re able to perform and continue to enjoy their tradition.” Rehearsals, as well as performances, are held at Wesley United Methodist Church, 40 W. Main St., Strasburg. According to the church, the tradition started in 1955, when Dorothy Mayhew had only $60 from the church budget to start the Christmas pageant. The first performance was done with an old upright piano box from a local piano store, a few angel outfits and makeshift costumes for the men. Mayhew, the church’s choir director, turned that first performance into a tradition. This year ’s per formances will be held on Friday, Dec. 11, through Sunday, Dec 13. Friday and Saturday’s performances will be held at 7:30 p.m., while Sunday’s matinee will commence at 4:30 p.m. Performances are free admission with freewill offerings accepted. Refreshments and fellowship will follow each performance. “Performances themselves begin with the choir, and they perform their anthems to kind of greet everybody in,” Zahm Monywiir explained. “It’s kind of like a different version of a live Nativity because the actors are

Two years ago, the café was expanded to accommodate the growing number of attendees.

“If we can continue to have as much success with the Vets Café as we have, I would love to add a second meeting day on Saturdays,” said Fisher. “It can be hard for people who work to make it to the meeting on a weekday.” Building Bridges does not require veterans to participate in its programs or weekly gathering to visit its scenic 20-acre farm. Although the foundation continues to expand its services and weekly gatherings, Fisher said veterans are welcome to visit the property just to enjoy a peaceful, outdoor environment or utilize walking paths throughout the farm. Building Bridges is seeking volunteers to assist with horse handling as well as the operation of the Vets Café. To learn more about volunteer opportunities, call 717-368-3019.

Christmas shopping,” said Mary Martz, who is coordinating the event for the fifth time. “Our church supports four missionaries, and they’re in the Middle East, Italy and Guatemala.” Jewelry, candles, home decor, birdhouses and herbal products are among the vast array of items that will be sold by the show’s 32 local vendors. Martz said that the number of vendors at the show has increased in recent years. Each of the 32 vendors will donate one of their items for the silent auction, which will also feature gift cards and passes for local businesses and experiences, including Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre, Shady Maple, Cherry Crest Adventure Farm, Strasburg Pizza and Shear Fade in Strasburg. Several members of the congregation will also assemble and donate themed baskets for the auction. “Coffee cups and hot chocolate, that kind of thing,” Martz said of the baskets. “People can bid on those as well.” Homemade baked goods will also be for sale at the event, including pies, cakes, cookies and apple dumplings. There will also be a separate food cafe that includes hot dogs, hamburgers, barbecue and pizza that will be for sale. Traci Frantz, a Quarryville-based author, will also be at the show. Frantz released her memoir “With Courage and Grace” last year; the book is a tribute to her daughter who died from breast cancer. Martz said she expects Frantz to sign books at the show. The show is free to attend. Martz said that the church expects around 400 to 500 people to attend. Proceeds from the show will also benefit the church’s children’s ministry, which is in the process of restoring the site’s playground. “They need to do some excavating,” Martz explained. “There’s poor drainage up there, so it gets very muddy. They (also) want to do a walkway from our upper parking lot up to the playground; our property is a little hilly, so it’ll make it easier for strollers and stuff to get up there. The swings and all that stuff also need some care.” The church will also hold a Thanksgiving meal on Thursday, Nov. 26. Registration is required; visit the church at www.lampeter umc.com or call 717-464-4161 for more information. More information about the church and its programming can be found by visiting the aforementioned website. Traditional worship is held on Sundays at 8 a.m., and contemporary worship follows at 10:30 a.m.
