Lampeter-Strasburg

United Methodist Church (LUMC), 1101 Village Road, Lancaster, will host an art and craft market on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free event will feature over 25 vendors, a bake sale, a food café and a silent auction, and it will benefit the church’s missions committee.
Among the many vendors will be Eleanor Delk, who will sell custom-made bowl covers, table runners and hot chocolate bombs; photographer Sharon Verkulien with several images from her excursion to the African wilderness; and fine artist Carol Dale, who will sell original paintings and prints. New vendors have been added to the lineup for this year’s art and craft market, and their items will include jewelry, quilts, birdhouses, hand-painted crafts and holiday wreaths. “I love seeing all of the different items the vendors make and their creativity,” said Mary Martz, coordinator of the art and craft market. “(The art and craft market) gets us all in the holiday spirit, as a lot of holiday items are available.”
Additionally, local author JP Robinson will be present to sell and autograph his books. Robinson is the president of the Lancaster Christian Writers Association and writes books in the historical and political suspense genre. The art and craft market will also feature performances by three members of the church who provide the music for Sunday services - Nancy Snyder, Keith Roberts and Genevieve Karki.
A bake sale will be held during the event, and all items will be either donated or made by members of LUMC. A food café will be available in the church’s all-purpose room, where church members will prepare and sell a variety of food and snacks. Throughout the market, a silent auction will be held, consisting of items donated by the vendors and local businesses and gift baskets prepared by the church.
The art and craft market was started by LUMC’s missions committee seven years ago, and all proceeds traditionally benefit a cause selected by the committee; in the past, the group has supported specific needs of missionaries in the community and raised funds for Villa Fontane Church in Puerto Rico, which was heavily affected by Hurricane Maria. This year, all proceeds raised from the bake sale, food purchases and the silent auction will benefit Ukrainian refugees.
A holiday market will be held on Saturday, Nov. 12, at Tanger Outlets, 311 Stanley K. Tanger Blvd., Lancaster, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will include a variety of vendors, nonprofits, food trucks, seasonal music, holiday games and children’s activities.
Dozens of local vendors and crafters will be present to sell their wares at the market, such as Color Street, Lucy’s Dog Dudds, Pottery by Monica and Off the Hook Creations. Many nonprofits will have their own stands and offer games and activities for children, including tours of Lafayette Fire Company trucks and a pingpong toss. Children will have an opportunity to take a photo with Santa and Elsa, and holiday music will be provided by local carolers throughout the day. To register as a vendor, nonprofit or food truck, visit www.mjsquad.com/events.

able until sold out.

The holiday market is coordinated by MJ Small Business Squad, a local organization focused on prioritizing small businesses in the area. “The
goal of the event is to have people support local businesses while they do their holiday shopping,” said Megan Kalbach, founder of MJ Small Business
Squad. “We found that it was something that is really needed, and it’s been well received by the community.”
Kalbach started the organization in July 2020 with her business partner, Jacque Hess, after the COVID-19 pandemic affected them both as business owners; Kalbach owned a Mary Kay business and worked as a Cadillac sales director for 10 years, and Hess’ family owned Country Table Restaurant in Mount Joy. After Kalbach helped to organize a food truck event with Hess, who was working to keep Country Table operating, members of the community contacted them to inquire about who their marketing team was.
“We decided that since we couldn’t work our own business, instead of sitting around crying about what we couldn’t do, we would apply
the skills we acquired over the years to other small businesses,” said Kalbach. Since officially creating MJ Small Business Squad, Kalbach’s team has grown to include a staff of 13 members, all of whom are working mothers with experience operating a local business. “It has bloomed into something where we can provide a flexible work environment for women to prioritize their families and, beautifully, do the same for the businesses we support here locally,” said Kalbach.
MJ Small Business Squad will also coordinate the Hometown Holiday market at Wyndham Lancaster Resort, 2300 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Saturday, Nov. 19, and Sunday, Nov. 20, and an outdoor community market in Mountville in the spring. For more information, visit www.mjsquad.com.
The Lancaster County Art Association, 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, will offer a “Clay Holiday” beginning clay class for adults on Wednesdays, Nov. 9, Nov. 16 and Dec. 7, from 9 a.m. to noon. Carol Dale will be the instructor.
In the first two sessions, students will learn hand-building clay techniques, and they will glaze their fired work in the final class. The class is limited to eight students.
Separate fees have been set for members and for nonmembers, with an additional fee for materials. To register, call 717-687-7061 or visit www.lcaaonline.org.
“Preparing for Life Passages: Courageous Conversations About Life and Death” will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence.
During this interactive seminar, author Kendall Keeler will share four steps that he believes can help anyone navigate any of life’s passages. Keeler’s model for planning and preparation can apply to a variety of situations, including marriage, firsttime parenting, a home purchase, starting a business, beginning retirement, or receiving a terminal diagnosis.
Several community experts will speak about steps that may be taken to ensure a family is cared for if a loved one dies unexpectedly. In addition to Keeler, the speakers will be Jona Green from Edward Jones, David Spangler from LegalShield, funeral director Michael Miller, Valerie Stocker of State Farm, and real estate agent Kelli
Brandenberger.
This event will be the final “Preparing for Life Passages” seminar this year. To register, visit www.kendallkeeler.com /seminar.
For Keeler, the past few years have included a job transition, a new business startup, helping his children venture into adulthood, and assisting his parents as they age. Through these life passages, Keeler discovered a need for wisdom to avoid reactionary decisions through better personal planning, as well as a need for the input of experts. He saw a need for families to courageously prepare for the death of a loved one. Keeler’s belief in the importance of planning for the future was also fueled by his having led a variety of local nonprofits through organizational strategic planning, including Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, Solid Rock Youth Ministries, and New Hope Counseling Center.
Lampeter-Strasburg’s Colin Whitaker, leading almost from start to finish, posted a winning time of 15:49.9 to win the Lancaster-Lebanon League cross country championship in Ephrata Tuesday, Oct. 18. His time is the second fastest L-L time since 2008. Only McCaskey’s Nathan Henderson ran faster in that time. He is also believed to be the first L-S runner to claim a league crown.
“I’m thrilled that Colin won but also excited to see how he has progressed as a competitive runner and grown in character and maturity over the past three years,” said head coach Mari Cunningham.
Whitaker’s nemesis, Hempfield’s Aidan Hodge, last year’s winner, finished ten seconds behind though the Knights did claim the team title. The Pioneers were third overall and first among AA schools.
Other top 25 medal winners for the Pioneers included seniors Ben Devine, with a fourth-place finish in 16:29 and Parker Stoner (17th, 17:17).
“Ben is a great example of what it means to set goals and make progress one season at a time,” said Cunningham. “His determination and
discipline paid off. He had a great race. Parker and Luke Smith (26th) also ran with determination. Both teams gave their best efforts.”
Other place winners included Andrew Cramer (75), Owen Witmer (78), and Michael Colosi (86).
The girls team finished 13th overall (4th against AA schools) but also brought home a medal when Keira Smecker crossed the line in 21st place (20:35).
“Keira ran a smart race and had a PR,” noted Cunningham. “Merin Kauffman (30th but the eighth freshman to finish) missed medaling but ran well and has had a tremendous season for a freshman.”
Also placing was: Morgan Wright (64), Jocelyn Wolff (100), Olivia Magagna (101), Abby Welchans (103) and Mikayla Coe (106).
Ben Wilson competed in the PIAA state golf championships at Penn State on Oct. 17-18 where he battled for a medal. After carding a 77 on Monday, Wilson shook off the cold and windy conditions Tuesday and posted a 72 for a 149 total that left him tied for 10th place.
“Ben wanted to place higher, but he finished his senior year in style, setting numerous school records,” noted head coach Mike Chiodo. “He was the first L-S golfer to qualify for states twice. He shot the lowest round at states of any L-S player. His round of 72 broke the previous record of 74. His 149 is the lowest two-day total for an L-S player. Josh Burg shot a 151 in 2007. He is the first L-S male golfer to finish in the top ten and medal. He is also the first L-S golfer to have multiple rounds in the 60’s during the regular season.
“That’s a fine career,” said Chiodo.
Poised to start the post-season, the volleyball team split their final league matches and improved to 8-5 on the year.
Thursday, Oct. 13 they suffered a second 3-1 loss to Section Two champ Ephrata, bowing out 25-14, 25-21, 17-25, 25-17.
Megan Platt’s 15 kills and three aces fueled the offense. Emily Mullin, who dished out
29 assists, tied Jenna Hoover with 9 digs and Grace Schonour put up five blocks.
They rebounded with a Monday night, Oct. 17, road win, spoiling Solanco’s homecoming but not before an exciting third set (25-12, 25-11, 25-23).
“Our serving was definitely the key in the first two sets,” said head coach Sharon Mullin. “And then we lost our mojo a little and things got interesting. But we pulled it out and now we look forward to districts.”
L-S trailed the bulk of the third set. Tying the game at 16-16and 22-22. Tied at 23, Solanco served out of bounds and then committed an unforced error to help lift the Pioneers.
Platt against sparked the scoring with 7 aces and 6 kills while Hoover cleaned up on defense with 6 blocks and 8 digs. Mullin added 15 assists.
The Section Two runner-up Pioneers posted mixed results in their recent trip to the District Three 2A Team Tennis championships.
The No. 3 seed Pioneers opened with a dominating 3-0 rout over visiting Harrisburg Academy (No. 6) Wednesday,
Oct. 12. Rowan Kimmel worked a shutout at No. 2 singles and Laura Leaman added a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3. The final team point went to Jess Salgado and Emma Williams with a No. 2 doubles shutout.
Both Kylie Gerhardt (No. 1) and Katie Finn and Eve Miller (No. 1 doubles) were winning their matches when L-S secured the needed three points to win.
In the semifinals Monday, Oct. 17 at Hershey Racquet Club, the Pioneers lost a 3-0 result to No. 2 seed Lancaster Country Day (15-0).
“We knew their singles girls were very strong,” said head coach Mark Trach. “Our doubles teams were close but after the three singles losses the match was called.”
Tuesday afternoon, with a chance to qualify for the state tournament, the Pioneers went up against top seed Wyomissing (11-1), who was knocked into the third place match with a 4-1 semifinals loss to Conrad Weiser. The Pioneers (13-3) fell short 3-1.
“Kylie won in singles and Jess and Emma split sets at second doubles,” explained Trach. “Then we lost first doubles and
In their last game of the regular season, the Pioneers suffered a second straight loss, bowing out 3-2 to Section Four champ Lancaster Mennonite in non-league play Thursday, Oct. 13.
The Blazers scored twice in the first half to take a comfortable lead at the half. The Pioneers cut that lead in half when Landon Rice finished a nice feed from Dan Marcroft in the 68th minute. Two minutes later, Marcroft, on a corner kick, found the back of the net to tie the score. Jack Kelly assisted. Just before the end of regulation, however, the Blazers found the game-winner.
“Another tough loss to a solid team,” said head coach Chris Garraffa. “We had some good opportunities but couldn’t finish.
“Mennonite’s final goal was a quality finish. We broke down defensively, but Luke Brenneman came out to make the save as he should have and it just snuck by him.
“Now we need to get organized for districts,” he added. “We’re the underdog but hungry dogs eat. We’ll find a way.”
On the road Friday, Oct. 14, the football team posted its third and most dominating shutout of the season, hanging a 49-zip loss on a 4-4 Elco squad.
Trent Wagner completed 6-of-8 attempts for 219 yards, throwing for a season-high five touchdowns to pace the action. Hunter Hildenbrand was on the
receiving end of three of those strikes for 98 yards while Dean Herr grabbed a pair of TD tosses for 110 yards.
“Elco had been playing pretty well,” said head coach Victor Ridenour. “They loaded the box and gave us some one-on-one opportunities in the passing game, and we were able to take advantage.”
Wagner hit Herr with a 55yard toss for Lampeter’s first score of the game. About four minutes later, Wagner found Hildenbrand with a 40-yard strike.
The Pioneers made it 21-0 early in the second quarter when Hildenbrand hauled in a 42-yard TD pass. The duo capped the halftime score with another hook-up, this one a short two-yard toss that pushed the lead to 28-0.
The passing onslaught continued in the third when Wagner launched a 67-yard bomb to Dean Herr that put the game out of reach. Carson Coleman chipped in with a 53-yard rushing touchdown late in the third quarter while Louie Malatesta’s (55 rushing yards) 4-yard scamper with 8:58 left in the fourth capped the scoring.
Peter Fiorello booted six PATs with Eric Doutrich kicking one.
“The defense as a unit played extremely well,” said Ridenour. “Despite the lopsided score, we were able to limit mistakes and we executed pretty well,” he added. “It was also an opportunity for some of the younger kids to see what varsity speed looks like.”

Keeler’s first step in navigating his life’s passages was to write and publish a book, “Your Last 24,” which is intended to open the door for conversations about life and death. The book is available for purchase on Amazon. Keeler next hosted a podcast with a friend who had lung cancer; episodes can be found on most podcast platforms and at www.kendall keeler.com/podcast.
This year, Keeler decided to take the conversation more broadly into the community and was inspired to do so by a friend and community leader, Butch Marvin, who had experienced loss. To host the seminars, Keeler sought partners who were experts in the areas
that he believed would most benefit families as they prepare for life’s passages, especially death. Being a longtime member of the Southern Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and having personally benefited from a variety of business leaders’ expertise, Keeler contacted Chamber members and found several who agreed to partner with him to offer the seminars. Keeler, who is a co-chair of the Solanco Pastors’ Fellowship, also asked several pastors to host the seminars at their churches. Previously this year, Keeler and his team hosted seminars at Waterway Church in Oxford, Mt. Vernon Church in Kirkwood, and Timberline Church in Strasburg.
Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PC&D) observed National Ampersand Day on Sept. 8, celebrating the symbol that indicates there is more of something. In PCA&D’s case, that means more art, creativity, initiative, and inventiveness. College president Michael Molla has adopted the ampersand as a symbol of the college and all that it adds to the Lancaster community.
For its celebration of National Ampersand Day, PCA&D invited all students in the college community to design their own ampersands for competition, create their own ampersand T-shirts, take part in ampersand-themed contests and games, and line up in the shape of a giant PCA&D ampersand for a drone photo. The photo was taken in the Art Garden during a picnic, where the menu featured items with “and” in their names, such as macaroni and cheese, chicken and waffles, peanut butter and jelly, and A&W root beer.

“I am super excited,” said Michelle Gibbs, program director with House of His Creation (HOHC), as she headed down to the basement of the house at 301 N. Broad St., Lititz. “All of this is new.” The new area includes a Cricut Creation Station Gibbs has set up to teach the mothers who live at HOHC how to make personalized items and a boutique for the mothers to shop in.
Gibbs has used the Cricut machines to create T-shirts, mugs, jewelry, and purses with the HOHC logo on them. “Who doesn’t love
personalized items?” asked Gibbs. “My goal is to help the women learn some entrepreneurship skills because we know that as a single mom, it takes a lot (to support yourself and your baby),” she explained. “You need to be able to generate extra income and still be mom to your children.” Gibbs said creating the station has been on her heart for a while. In addition to the Cricut station, Gibbs has stocked the area with arts and crafts items. “Some of the women like to draw or sew,” she noted. “We want to be able to offer them something they can do to make some
extra money during those first months (when) you want to be there with your child.”
Adjacent to the Cricut station is the small boutique. “(Women at HOHC) can earn points to purchase things for their children and themselves,” said Gibbs. Points can be earned by attending certain classes, preparing a meal, or cleaning office space. Gibbs has lined the shelves of the boutique with baby items such as diapers, wipes, shampoo, baby clothes, and stuffed animals. A few larger items, including strollers, playpens, and a highchair, are also available.
Other items in the boutique include backpacks, school supplies, and journals, and Gibbs has stocked pots, pans, and cookbooks for program graduates who are ready to leave HOHC.
Changes at HOHC, which provides housing and other support to pregnant women age 18 and over, have been occurring in the last several months. Matthew Neff, director of HOHC, and his
wife, Callie, program director with HOHC South, recently relocated to Florida, where they opened 685, a refuge for girls who have been rescued from human trafficking.
In Lititz, Gibbs said, the house is prepared to accommodate up to four women at a time. New house parents Bill and Trish Sclafani are settled on the third floor.
“We are excited to open these doors again,” said Gibbs, who said that women should primarily be in their first or second trimester of pregnancy and that they may remain at the house for six months after delivery. Gibbs works with a number of outside agencies to bring together all the components a woman needs during her pregnancy and after, including A Woman’s Concern and the Nurse-Family Partnership. Gibbs has also instituted the Stepping Up House of His Creation Aftercare program for women who choose to continue to receive services after leaving HOHC.
