n important piece of Lancaster County history has found a new home in Strasburg. Following a special-exception hearing in September, Strasburg Township approved a project that will place the historic Rocky Springs carousel on the Choo Choo Barn property in Strasburg. Built in 1899, the carousel was built by the celebrated Dentzel Carousel Company and found its way to Rocky Springs Park near Willow Street and Lampeter until it closed in 1982. Since its departure from Lancaster, the carousel has been all around the country. Bringing it back to Lancaster County was a process that involved collaboration from the Choo Choo Barn, the Choo Choo Barn Foundation (CCBF) and the Rocky Springs Carousel Association (RSCA), as well as local government entities and organizations from outside the county. The RSCA has housed the carousel since 1999. “Tracy is the president of the

(RSCA),” said Gary Russell, owner of the Choo Choo Barn and president of the CCBF. “They were caregivers of the carousel until an appropriate place would be found.” Russell said that the RSC A wanted the carousel to be housed in a place that was nonprofit and heavily involved children. The Choo Choo Barn checked all of the boxes.
The carousel’s remarkable collection includes 48 animals, two chariots, an original ring machine and a historic Wurlitzer band organ with more than 200 music rolls. Once enjoyed by Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers and Burt Reynolds while the carousel was housed at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., the CCBF’s goal is to restore the carousel back See Choo Choo Barn pg 12

The Promise Players are putting a new twist on metatheater. Instead of watching a play about another play, you can watch a play about a church while sitting in one. The theater group will put on its fall show, “See You in Bells,” on Thursday, Nov. 5, through Sunday, Nov. 8, and Thursday, Nov. 12, through Sunday, Nov. 15, at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. Thursday and Friday performances will begin at 7:30 p.m., Saturday shows will start at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday shows will commence at 2:30 p.m. The show, written by Edie Claire, follows the chaotic wedding of Jenna Bower, the youngest daughter in a family that has been doomed by ruinous weddings. “The family has had a series of disastrous weddings in this church building before,” said Glenn Grubb, the director of the show. “The building is kind of old and run down, and it’s actually going to be the last service in the church. … Some disastrous things happen in the church; that sort of sets a scene for why (things) are the way they are.” The show has five flashback s ce n e s a n d fe at u re s s o m e younger actors who will play past versions of the adult characters. “It’s a good, funny show, but it does have some good messaging,” Grubb said. “We usually prefer to do comedies, but we have done some dramas in the past. … This is another one that everybody really liked.” The Promise Players launched in 1995 and have put on more than 50 shows over the course of

Ceili Band Causes Feet to Move BY JEFF FALK
Music is a series of sounds, notes, beats and rhy thms arranged in a way that is pleasing to the ear. But music is also a combination of dozens of different genres culturally influenced by time-honored traditions, not unlike Scottish or Celtic. “ We play a variety of Irish and Scottish music,” said Christy King, who’s been the musical director of the Ceili Band for five years. “ T he music uses ornamentation and rhy thms that are ver y distinct from other music. While we use sheet music as well, the style needs to be studied by ear in order to capture the essence of music. That probably creates the greatest challenge for musicians learning Celtic music, especially for those trained classically.” A part of the Paloma Performance Troupe, the Ceili Band is an independent musical ensemble that also suppor ts the Doherty Petri School of
Ir ish Dance. A fter all, what’s dancing without music? The Ceili Band generally practices a couple of times a week, mainly at the Celtic Center of Lancaster, 1285 Manheim Pike, Lancaster. “Our goal is to bring musicians of all ages and musical backgrounds to g e t h e r to l e a r n a nd enjoy Celtic music,” said King. “The band is also an opportunity for musicians to get exper ience performing on a stage for an audience.” The Ceili Band is made up of about 25 musicians, mostly from L ancaster County and ranging in age from 8 to 70. Those musicians play fiddles, keyboards, guitars, cellos, bodhrans, f lutes and a double bass. “I think the band is unique in the wide range of a ges and abilities ,” said King, a resident of Ephrata. “We try to have a place for everyone to participate. We want people to know that anyone is See Ceili pg 12

Faire, Highland Presbyter ian C hurch and the Maryland Irish Festival. “Celtic music is beautiful and attainable for anyone,” said King , “whether you want to dust off your fiddle and join us at practice or come out to one of our performances. We hope to pass on the joy of music to everyone around us.” The Ceili Band was formed about five years a g o , a ro u n d t h e s a m e time that dance instructor Esther Pujol was piecing together the Doherty Pe t r i S c h o o l o f I r i s h Dance. It turned out to be a match made in Irish music heaven. “I had been teaching fiddle lessons at the Celtic Center and started a group practice with some of my students, along with a few other musicians from the dance school,” said King. “Esther was, at the same time, putting together numbers with the dancers, some of them involving both the band and the dancers together. The idea was Esther’s brainchild, and we worked it out along with the help of many other incredible teachers and musicians over the years.”

to its original condition. The CCBF is preparing to build an enclosed building to house the carousel at the end of its property, near the intersection of Gap Road and Historic Drive. The plan is that anytime the Choo Choo Barn is open, the carousel building will be open. “It’s going to be there at the light, right at the end of our proper ty,” Russell said. “It’s going to be beautiful. Everybody’s going to be able to see it. ... We are looking to have a Rocky Springs museum there. We were getting a lot of things that were being donated, so we look to have a museum there, which showcases Rocky Springs as it was for Lancaster.” Russell has an ambitious plan to sell his first ticket within the next 24 months, which will require copious amounts of fundraising, planning, construction and restoration. Around $3 million will be needed to fully complete the restoration. “ We are now in the design phase,” Russell explained. “We are showing what we want to get, what it’s going to look like and everything like that. We don’t have anything
to show for the design quite yet, but I’m hoping within the next 30 days or so I would be able to have something like that that we can release.” Parton passed away in August at the age of 80. Parton and her team were well aware of the efforts to restore the once-famous carousel. “We did have her blessing,” Russell said. “ We definitely had her interest to be involved with this restoration and reopening of the carousel.” More information about the Choo Choo Barn can be found by visiting www .choochoobarn.com or emailing info@choochoo barn.com. The attraction is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, excluding select holidays. It is located near the Strasburg R ailroad and histor ic downtown Strasburg. Russell is not the original owner of the Choo Choo Barn but founded the CCBF after getting involved a few years ago. “ The purpose was to reduce the screen time kids have,” he said. “We replaced the screen time with a hobby, and a hobby for so many kids of all ages, including both males and females, is trains. It’s a perfect match.”

The program has grown from approximately 50 students in the fall of 2024 to 120 students and counting this fall. L ancaster Rec offers eight genres of dance, including ballet, contemporar y, dance fitness, jazz, hip-hop, and tap, with beginning and intermediate classes designed to meet a variety of interests and experience levels. New th is s e a s on for adu l t dancers are musical theater dance and movement lab. Ten classes are
available for adults each week, with options available every weeknight and on Saturdays. The adult dance program has also expanded to three dance educators, who lead weekly classes across the schedule. For some participants, dance has become a family endeavor. Affordability is paramount to Lancaster Rec’s mission, and scholarships are offered for children from families with financial need.
