Fictional Story, Real Technology BY COURTNEY MENGEL

“I’ve been writing all my life,” said Lancaster resident Dan Armstrong. From 1982 to 1987, Armstrong wrote songs for his Christian rock band, Damascus; from 1992 to 1997, he wrote 1,000 one-minute shows called “The Wacky Words of Dan Armstrong” on WJTL; and in 2015, he published “The Adventures of a Real-Life Cable Guy.”

Armstrong is a man of many talents. He can speak Japanese, perform magic tricks, and craft owls out of pieces of wood. He’s a real estate investor, a business owner, a storyteller, a husband, and the father of four girls. Needless to say, he’s a pretty busy guy. Armstrong’s schedule, however, didn’t stop him from writing another book - a book completely different from his first publication. See New Book pg 7

The Lampeter-Strasburg High School homecoming court candidates are (front, from left) Mariah Beiler, Ella Horst, Brooke Smith, Molly Bucher, Jenna Daveler, Leah Denlinger, Cassie Meck, Ermine Jacques, (back, from left) Isaiah Parido, Chad Royer, Bennett Stoltzfus, Payton Cunningham, Nick Del Grande, Owen Filson, Andrew Reidenbaugh, and Grant Beiler.

omecoming festivities will return to Lampeter-Strasburg High School (LSHS). On Thursday, Oct. 21, at 6 p.m., the girls’ powderpuff teams will go head to head on the football field, and the homecoming king will be crowned during halftime. On Friday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m., the homecoming football game against Ephrata will begin, and the homecoming queen will be announced during halftime. The homecoming dance will occur on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. at LSHS. The homecoming queen candidates are Mariah Beiler, Molly Bucher, Jenna Daveler, Leah Denlinger, Ella Horst, Ermine Jacques, Cassie Meck, and Brooke Smith. The homecoming king candidates are Grant Beiler, Payton Cunningham, Nick Del Grande, Owen Filson, Isaiah Parido, Andrew Reidenbaugh, Chad Royer, and Bennett Stoltzfus. Mariah Beiler is the daughter of

to study sports medicine and play soccer. Leah Denlinger is the daughter of Jim Denlinger and Jenn Peterson of Willow Street. She is a member of Student Council, Varsity Club, Ski and Snowboard Club, Pioneer Interact Club, and the varsity volleyball team. Leah is also involved with the Cheshire Pony Club, the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA), and the Second Nature Farm Equestrian Riding Team. She plans to attend college to pursue a career that involves animals and to join her school’s equestrian team. Ella Horst is the daughter of Cliff and Roselle Horst of Lancaster. She is the senior representative to the L-S Board of School Directors and is a member of NHS, marching band, concert band, Madrigals, concert choir, full orchestra, and the varsity basketball team. Outside of school, Ella is part of the youth group and worship team at Strasburg Mennonite Church. She plans to attend college to study nursing and hopes to work in labor and delivery.

According to Dan Steinman, Handi-Vangelism BASIS ministry assistant, the Help for People in Pain seminar given by Tim and Kathy Sheetz addresses any loss that significantly affects a person’s life and outlook. “It’s for people with different types of losses,” Steinman said. “Not necessarily the loss of a spouse or a child. It could be the loss of a job … a divorce or bankruptcy … a (difficult) diagnosis.”

Chris Lenhart (left) and Dan Steinman display the Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC) logo. CMBC and HandiVangelism are partnering with Beth Foss (not pictured) to hold a grief seminar in November.

Help for People in Pain will be presented at Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC), 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, on Saturday, Nov. 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The program will be simulcast and livestreamed at Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, for those who would rather attend at that location. Tim and Kathy have presented the seminar more than 200 times both in and outside the U.S., and the book they utilize will be updated for this event. “(Tim and Kathy) will offer tools to navigate through grief,” said Steinman. “They will talk about the different stages of grief and different ways to personally deal with the situations, including specific sec-

tions on illnesses or the death of a spouse.” Chris Lenhart, pastor of CMBC, noted that the seminar is not just for those who are grieving. “(An attendee) may be a neighbor or a coworker or a good friend or a family member (who is) trying to figure out a way to reach out and care for (a grieving person).” Steinman shared that those who take the seminar often say they wish their pastor had attended one. Lenhart concurred, saying, “Pastors, ministry leaders who deal with loss, chaplains for retirement communities and hospitals … anyone who is around people experiencing grief and loss would benefit from attending this seminar. I think they will get valuable tools.” He added that he is looking forward to what he will learn. There is a cost to attend the seminar, which will include a book and lunch at both locations for those who register at https://calvary monument.org/journey -through-grief by Monday, Nov. 1. In-person registration on the day of the seminar may be completed at either church, but a book and lunch will not be guaranteed. Coffee and light refreshments will be served.

ny in Massachusetts. In 2006, her passion for Shakespeare led her to found TPSP, a nonprofit organization devoted to sharing the joys of Shakespeare through instruction and performance. Tickets may be purchased in advance at www.peoples shakespeareproject.org or for a higher fee at the door. This production is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes long, and the play is suggested for audiences age 12 and up. To protect the health and safety of the actors, staff and audience, TPSP is limiting seating to 50 people per show and requiring proof of vaccination at the door as well as mask-wearing while inside the barn. The barn has on-site parking and a heated space with bathrooms. TPSP is celebrating its 15th year presenting Shakespeare’s works for the Lancaster community and beyond. All its performances are made possible through the contributions of individual donors and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. TPSP’s lead sponsor is Historic Rock Ford, and it has also received assistance from The Stone Independent School. For more information, contact Howell at laura@peoples shakespeareproject.org or 717-371-7793.

“Witch … Love, Loss and the Mystery” is a departure from TPSP’s full Shakespeare productions. It was inspired by Shakespeare, but is just as much about his personal struggles as it is about his characters and plays. In the play, the Three Witches from “Macbeth” sense an imbalance in the universe. Shakespeare is stuck, and to get him unstuck they must stage an intervention and call on some of his memorable women to assist them in this effort. This one-act play combines the language of Shakespeare with modern English. With a cast of three, plus one disembodied Voice, the play is full of humor even as it explores the depths of human emotions and the need for poetry in the world. The play was developed and is being directed by Howell and Sena Taskapilliohlu, a theater artist from Istanbul. Howell is a local Equity actress, teacher, director, playwright and roster artist with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. She received her training at Circle-in-the-Square Theatre, The Actor’s Center in New York City and Shakespeare & Compa-

on Fridays to Sundays, Oct. 29 to 31 and Nov. 5 to 7, with a nightly 7:30 p.m. curtain time. The play will be performed at the barn at Historic Rock Ford, located at 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, in Lancaster County Central Park.

The People’s Shakespeare Project (TPSP) will return to live theater with a new, original play, “Witch … Love, Loss and the Mystery,” written by Laura Korach Howell, TPSP’s executive artistic director. The performances will take place

New Book Almost two years ago, Armstrong came across an article about Smart Dust - the world’s smallest radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip, measuring 100 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. By combining the chip’s compactness and wireless communication with internet technology, Smart Dust could be used for security, transportation, entertainment, traceability, logistics, and more. Armstrong couldn’t believe that such a thing has existed for the past 20 years, so he decided to learn more. One thing led to another, and soon enough, Armstrong found himself wondering, “What does it mean for us as a society to allow somebody or a group of people to have information about us without our consent?” For the past 18 months, Armstrong has explored this question by writing a book where the story itself is fictional, but the technology is real. In Armstrong’s new book, “Smart Dust: The Dawn of Trans-Humanism,” the Smart Dust particles penetrate human skin, which enable trackers to monitor every moment of an individual’s day. Readers will be exposed to history, psychological warfare, and philosophy. By trans-humanism, Armstrong ex plained, “ We’re on the edge of becoming human robotic AI counterparts.” He continued, “Like human 2.0 … that we’re no longer pure, but we’re a mixture of human technology and organic materials.” “In an age where sci-fi merges with reality by the day, we see the world in ‘Smart Dust’ is not too far away,” wrote Zachary Denman, a filmmaker in the United Kingdom, who reviewed the book. “This is an AI horror story, which no one can truly comprehend, not even the creators of it.” A sequel is already in the works. “Smart Waves” will be about frequencies that affect a person’s mood that were used during the Iraq War. Copies of “Smart Dust: The Dawn of Trans-Humanism” will be available to purchase on Amazon.

Golfers Second in District, XC Wins Section Title

BY MONA STEINHAUER

“That was our lowest score in school history,” said head coach Mike Chiodo. “It was our best match of the year and the first time we qualified as a team. I was thrilled. This was a tight match the whole way.” Matt and Ben Wilson carded a 1under par 72 for their lowest round of the year. Harsh finished with an 80 and Smith was two strokes back, both hitting their average on the season. Individually, the Wilson brothers advanced to Saturday’s second round by making the 79-stroke cut. Matt, with a 79 on Saturday, finished with a two-day 150 total and tied for fourth while Ben carded an 80 for a 151 and tied for seventh place. They are two of the top 18 that were inside the 158 cut and qualified for the PIAA Championships. “Saturday’s conditions were more challenging,” said Chiodo. “It was windy, the pin placements were tougher, and we played longer tees. Very few kids shot better the second day. This is the first year we’ve had two boys qualify for states,” he continued. Emily Chiodo and Cory Gast both qualified in 2007.

CROSS COUNTRY Lampeter-Strasburg claimed the first six places in tri-meet action at The golf team continued its N. The girls team also picked up two wins, moving to 9-2 for third place with convincing results over Elco (24-35) and N. Lebanon (18-45). Aubrey Magagna was six seconds off the winning pace and finished second with a 21:10. Jaclyn Martin (21:33) was third overall, Keira Smecker (22:25) settled for fifth while Jocelyn Wolff, Molly Wissler, Morgan Wright, and Abby Welchans secured the eighth through 11th places. They are currently ranked 8th in the AAA bracket. Molly Buher’s second half goal, assisted by Tonna Harnish, proved to be the game winner over the Raiders while a balanced effort provided a 4-0 result over the Spartans. Chloe Buchler and Jenna Daveler, who scored on a penalty kick, provided first half tallies while Hannah Cisne and Ashlynn Keys scored in the second half with determined efforts on rebound goals. TENNIS The tennis team opened postseason action in the L-L League Flight tournament which got underway on October 7. Rising to the top of their bracket was Lindsey Steele and Katie Finn with an 8-3 championship round result over Donegal. “Our third doubles team played fantastic throughout the tournament and took the title easily,” said head coach Mark Trach. Individually, Kylie Gerhardt settled for second place in the second flight with a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Township’s Jade Miller while Ryan Gerhardt, playing in the top flight, came in fifth place after suffering a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Allison Evans. VOLLEYBALL The volleyball team posted mixed results over the last week, topping Solanco 3-1 on Oct. 7 before dropping a 3-1 result at home on the 12th against Manheim Central. L-S rocketed to a 25-12 first set against Solanco but each of the next three sets were determined by five points or less with L-S prevailing 25-22 in the final set. Chloe Nolt’s five aces and Emily Mullin’s 11 kills along with 13 setups by Riley Stoltzfus sparked the offense. Mullin and Alexis Moran each provided two blocks with Morgan Lapp hustling for 14 digs. Action against the third place Barons on “Dig Pink” night was another nail-biter. The largest victory went to the visitors who claimed the first and fourth sets 25-22. The middle sets were closer with Manheim pulling out a 25-23 win, after nine ties, in the second set and L-S answering with the same result in set three. Mullin racked up a team-high 12 kills, Stoltzfus distributed 18 assists and served four aces, while Leah Denlinger added 10 digs.
