L-S Marching Band Will Step Into the Spotlight
BY GEORGE DEIBEL

The Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School marching band is getting its time to shine under the bright lights.
The Lampeter-Strasburg Marching Band (LSMB) Boosters will host a Pennsylvania Marching Band Coalition Festival on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the L-S football stadium, 1616 Rosier Way, Lancaster. Gates will open at 5 p.m. If there is inclement weather, check the band boosters’ website or social media for updates.

For more information, go to www.L-Smarchingband.org or the boosters’ social media pages on Facebook at “LSMB Boosters” and Instagram at @LSMBBoosters. Tickets can be ordered in advance through Venmo @LSbandbooster. Venmo payments and cash will be accepted at the gate.

“When you think about the marching band, everything they do is for everyone else,” said LSMB Boosters president Carissa Magras.
“Like, the football games, they’re there to keep the energy up for the football players. The Memorial Day parade, they’re there to honor the veterans. The Halloween parade, they’re there to make it more fun for the kids. Everything they do is for everyone else, to make everyone else’s experience is better. They are there for all of these

There are so many great causes in Lancaster County. Locally, there are so many life-affirming nonprofits performing life-altering work.
The only thing greater is the generosity of Lancaster County residents.
Faithful Give seeks to link those donors and causes and to enhance that great work.
“Lancaster County has got to be one of the most generous counties in the nation,” said Dave Kieffer, president of Faithful Give. “I feel like it gives God glory to highlight every way that Lancaster County needs to be served. There are a lot of people here carrying out Jesus’ ministry. It’s about giving your money, but it’s also about giving your time, treasures and talents. Our goal is to connect the donors and the need.”

Buy a ticket. Enjoy the pride. Strasburg pride, that is.
Eleven Strasburg-area businesses have joined forces for a “Ticket to Strasburg” promotion.
“‘Ticket to Strasburg’ is an initiative that was put together by the Strasburg Marketing Association, which is a group of local businesses centered around Strasburg,” said
local businessman Ryan Dagen. “There’s some that are slightly outside of Strasburg, but everyone works together to support one another and promote one another to the Strasburg area, but then also to out-of-town guests.”

The ticket book can be purchased at the participating businessesBarebones Bicycle and Fitness, 21 W. Main St., Strasburg; Bespoke Brewing, 226 Gap Road, Ronks;

Overseen by an eight-member board, Faithful Give is a county-wide, online giving extravaganza that also promotes volunteering, committed prayer partnerships and general feelings of altruism. This year’s Faithful Give will be conducted over three days, from midnight on Sunday, Oct. 19, to midnight on Tuesday, Oct. 21.
Contributors to Faithful Give can donate to a general fund or designate their donations to specific participating causes or nonprofits.
Donations to Faithful Give can be made by credit card, electronic fund transfer or e-check at https://faithfulgive.org/

Church Sets Open House
St. Michael Lutheran Church, 40 E. Main St., Strasburg, will host an open house and thanksgiving event on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will be held as an expression of thanksgiving to the ministerium and community for the work done in the church’s social hall earlier this year.

guests, a lot of tourists. But we wanted to highlight those businesses to the people that live in the area.”
(on Friday, Dec. 5) right outside the borough building when they light the tree for Christmas,” said Dagen.

The event will include music by the Willow Valley Bells from 10:30 to 11 a.m., organ music by Kirk Garner at 11 a.m., and historic displays and church tours. Homemade cookies and cider will be served.

Choo Choo Barn, 226 Gap Road, Strasburg; Fireside Tavern, 1500 Historic Drive, Strasburg; Joe on the Go Coffee Co., 2 Miller St., Strasburg; New Creations Studio, Inc., 9 E. Main St., Strasburg; Paradise Station, 312 Paradise Lane, Ronks; Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg; Speckled Hen, 141 E. Main St., Strasburg; Strasburg Antique Market, 207 Georgetown Road; and Village Greens, 1444 Village Road, Strasburg.
There are a limited number of ticket books available. Go to www .strasburgpa.com for more information.
“The ticket is something that we launched this year to try to connect more with the local community,” said Dagen. “We feel like the Strasburg area has such an incredible grouping of phenomenal businesses, and some of those businesses are frequented by a lot of out-of-town
Visitors to the businesses are rewarded with discounts based on the number of establishments patronized. “It’s set up to feel a little bit like a train ticket,” said Dagen. “As you go around, you get stamps at each location, so it’s a fun thing to do together as a family, visit the different businesses and earn prizes and discounts as you go.”
Anyone who has their ticket stamped by all of the businesses will receive a season pass to Sight & Sound’s streaming platform and will be entered for a chance to win the grand prize - a value prize pack.
“Whether you’re able to complete the booklet or not, if you turn it in, we’re doing a drawing at the Strasburg tree lighting
Dagen expects the promotion to be even bigger next year. “The goal is to grow this,” he said. “There are 11 businesses involved in the ticket. Next year, I’d love to see that double, and I’d love to see it run all year, not just half of the year like it is this year. This is kind of a stepping stone for us. It’s the first year we’re doing it, and we really would love for this to be something that the locals look forward to each year, getting their ticket, completing their ticket. It’s a fun thing to do as a family.”

Trivia Event Posted
The Moravian Center of Lancaster will present a trivia contest on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 4 to 6 p.m. on the second floor of 227 N. Queen St., Lancaster. Featured trivia questions will be about music and artists from the ’50s
through the ’80s.
The event is free, with prizes awarded to the first-, second-, and thirdplace winners. Doors will open at 3 p.m. with snacks available for sale.
For more information, call 717-278-9008.
Dagen noted that the “Ticket to Strasburg” program will reward local residents. “I think that Strasburg is a community that benefits from tourism,” he said. “But I feel like a lot of the businesses in this area are really rooted in our local community, and we love making those connections with locals, with regulars, people that are visiting not just once or twice a year, but once or twice a week, once or twice a month. This is a way for us to kind of give discounts and give back to the locals that support us on a regular basis.”

“Faithful Give exists to support and advocate for faith-based, biblically faithful organizations in Lancaster County,” said Kieffer. “We’re not designed to compete; we’re focused on Faithful Give and what we do. Healthy competition can improve the outcome for all organizations. Generosity begets generosity.”
Faithful Give is also sponsoring two in-person events as part of this year’s initiative.
The first is a kickoff prayer breakfast that will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 20, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. Leaders and representatives of some of the charitable causes will be present to meet donors and answer questions.
Faithful Give will informally conclude its efforts with a community celebration event and expo on Oct. 21 from 5 to 8 p.m. at DOVE Westgate Church, 1755 W. Main St., Ephrata. That family-friendly gathering will feature bounce houses, a strolling magician, balloon animals, face painting, nine holes of miniature golf and fellowship.
“One hundred percent of your money goes straight to where you designate it,” said Kieffer. “We encourage people to give to nonprofits throughout the year. Lancaster County people steward their money well. We’re really trying to expand our definition of generosity. The organizations I get behind most are the ones who have won my heart. It helps me to buy into their mission.”

Faithful Give, which does not maintain a physical office, is aiming to raise a total of $2 million for 130 Lancaster County causes like Christian schools, youth and college programs, adult programs,
elderly care, human services and overseas organizations headquartered locally. Last year, Faithful Give raised more than $1.568 million from 2,933 donors.
“There are probably a thousand great causes in Lancaster County doing great work,” said Kieffer.
“Faithful Give is designed to come alongside nonprofits with a Christian vision or a Christian philosophy of what benefits the community. Our goal isn’t to

replace anything else. It’s to help in ways we can and feel called to.”
“The youth will be educated,” continued Kieffer, “the homeless will be cared for, families will find resources they need, the arts will be advanced in a way that will help the community, houses will be built, and early education programs will be supported. Some of these ministries cross over.”
Since its inception in 2023, Faithful Give has raised more than $2.3 mil-
lion for local nonprofits.
“I think Lancaster County has a rich heritage of biblically led, faithful-led nonprofits,” said Kieffer. “Faithful Give exists to celebrate and nurture that and protect that mission for the future. Since it was started, it’s grown in number and in quality. It’s also grown in reputation. I think we’ve grown in trust with our donors, and we’ve grown in trust with our causes. We’ve delivered on what we’ve promised.”

Band Festival
other people and all these other things. I think for me as a mom, this event is just for the band kids. It’s for them. It’s about them. And that’s honestly really cool because it’s like you see all these people are coming just purely to watch them and support them.”
L-S hosted a festival for the first time last year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the marching band. “It went really well, so we decided we’d do it again,” L-S band director Larry Royer said.
Magras stated that it takes teamwork to be able to host such a big event. “I know there’s one band that’s 20 people, but then we have another band that’s 150,” she said. “You have such a wide range of bands, and especially the smaller schools, they can’t put on a show. They can’t do a festival like we can. I think that shows that in the Strasburg, Lampeter, and Willow Street community, we have such a strong community, and so we’re able to put on these kinds of things. We’re able to have a festival because it takes a lot. There’s a lot of parent involvement and a lot of work that goes into it.”
Judges will provide constructive feedback, but there is no placement. “It’s really cool,” said Royer. “(The L-S band) gets to go on last while all the other
bands will be seated and all eyes will be on them. That makes it exciting to perform, and it’s kind of an honor.”
He added that all nine bands on the docket, including one from Millersville University, will be worth seeing. “Lots of kids will be doing great performances,” Royer said. “It’s near the end of the year, so the bands are at their best. It’s an exciting time to watch them.”
The band boosters will sell food, including Oola Bowls, hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, chips, and beverages. “We are going to have some really good food,” said Magras.
Magras said spectators will enjoy the experience.
“Personally, I just think they’re fun,” she said. “If you’ve ever been to a college football game, the band is so much fun to watch. … I’m obviously a band fan, so I’m going to be biased, but I just think it’s a lot of fun to come out. The cool thing about the marching band is you’re not sitting there for two hours. Because they’re performing their halftime shows, the bands will be out there for 15 minutes and then they’re done. It’s very fast paced, and it’s fun music. They do neat music. Different bands have different themes. It’s upbeat, and the kids do such a good job performing.”
