A fundraising craft and vendor show to benefit the local chapter of Wreaths Across America (WAA) will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at T he Factor y Ministr ies, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. Proceeds from the event will help fund the cost of placing wreaths on the graves of veterans at cemeteries in the Pequea Valley, Octorara and Strasburg areas. This is the third year for the craft show, which was held at the Gap Fire Company last year. This year’s show is set to have 30 vendors, an increase from last year’s figure of 21. “We were really out of room (at the fire hall),” said WAA committee member Deb Plum, who plans the event along with Paula Diem. “I’m a small business owner, and I do vendor events, so I know what it’s like to be squeezed into a tiny space.” Vendors, who will be set up in the facilities’ gymnasium, are asked to pay a registration fee and to donate one item for a random drawing that is held as part of the event. The prize drawing includes gift baskets, as well. Two of the vendors are bakers, one of which will be selling sourdough items; the other will offer cupcakes and pumpkin rolls. WAA volunteers place wreaths on the graves of veterans every holiday season to remember and honor those who served in the militar y. The Pequea Valley Cemeteries chapter alone places over 3,100 wreaths across 32 cemeteries every December. In addition to the craft show, the chapter holds annual golf outing, bingos and more similar fundraisers. This year, wreaths See Craft Show pg 12

Students across Lancaster County will benefit from a recent school supply drive organized by the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office, which collected school supplies to support local students and families. The donated materials will be distributed to Lancaster County school districts through Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13), helping the 16 districts address ongoing student needs throughout the school year. While school supplies are often associated with the start of the academic year, districts frequently welcome new students and families throughout the year. The
supplies will provide a readily available resource for students who enroll midyear or face challenges accessing necessary classroom materials. IU13’s Early Childhood and Special Education Services (ECSES) team will sort the donated materials before making them available through the District Special Education Administrators’ network and the District Social Workers’ Cohort. School districts will then identify local needs and distribute supplies directly to students and families. The effort reflects a commitment to supporting students and reducing barriers

The Associators eventually organized in all Pennsylvania and Delaware counties, and the group ser ved until it was superseded by the passage of the Militia Law on March 17, 1777. Members of the units thereafter reorganized as elements of the Pennsylvania Militia. Over its 30 years of existence, the Associators served the colony and state in numerous capacities.

Seymour’s talk will focus on the service of some notable members and the ways in which their service intersected with that of Gen. Edward Hand. Seymour attended Lewis and Clark College, the Pennsylvania State University, the University of Edinburgh, and Temple University, earning a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science. As a historian with the U.S. Army, he has focused on Army force structure and unit history, which includes preparing lineage and honors certificates, especially for units of the Army National Guard. In addition to his duties with the Army, his professional focus has been on the history and culture of the American soldier during the long 18th century, the evolution of tactics and small arms during that era, and the Army in World War I. He is the author of the books “The Pennsylvania Associators, 1747-1777” and “ T he Philadelphia Campaign, 1777,” and he has been published in the periodical Military Collec-

and children’s health and safety,” including familyoriented activities, free food and lead poisoningrelated resources. “The goal is just to educate the community on lead poisoning and how to prevent it,” said Meredith Lasdin, supervisor of the Lead-Free Families initiative. “Our program exists to help with that and come alongside them in the journey of lead poisoning prevention.” L a nc a s te r Co u nt y i s greatly susceptible to lead poisoning due to its large number of older homes. Nearly 60% of homes in the county were built before lead paint was banned, according to the Center for American Progress. “Our housing stock is old,” Lasdin said. “Houses that were built before 1978 are at risk of having lead paint because lead paint was not banned in this country until 1978. ... The age of lead paint at this point has caused it to start breaking down, and that’s when it becomes a hazard.” “The health effects of lead poisoning cannot be understated,” said Leaha Shermeyer, outreach coordinator of Lead-Free Families. “When a child is lead-poisoned, the effects of that poisoning are permanent on their brain.” Free ice cream will be served at the event. Mul-
tiple food trucks have also been invited to the event. As in the past, costumed characters will also be in attendance. Free admission to the event is possible due to a grant from the Women’s Giving Circle. Another feature of the day will be the opportunity for families to win giveaway drawings, which include tickets to community businesses and experiences. “People will get tickets, and there’s no purchasing needed,” Shermeyer said. “(We’ll have) Corn Cob Acres, Dutch Wonderland, Fox Meadows Creamery, Nothing Bundt Cakes and also some lead check swabs that are EPA certified.” Many free resources will be offered at the event, including point-of-care lead screening for children age 6 and under through Warwick Community Ambulance Association (WCAA); soil sample testing for lead through Property Lead; and tabling partners that will provide resources on other children’s health and safety-related topics, including early learning, nutrition and gun safety. Free car seat checks will also be provided by certified technicians through WCAA, a new feature of this year’s event. “Families are welcome to bring a soil sample or an item they’re concerned about, because all of those free resources are going to be there,” Shermeyer explained. The Lead-Free Families initiative was launched in 2021 with a $50 million grant from Penn Medicine. It’s the first program of its kind in the United States and has already checked out close to 900 homes in the county for lead. “There is no other program that does this; this is a very unique investment that was made in Lancaster,” said Shermeyer. “Lead poisoning affects families living in all different types of old housing across the county, rural and urban housing.” More information about the initiative can be obtained by emailing info@leadfree families.org or by calling 717-554-5323. The program currently offers lead screening, in-home lead testing and remediation, health care and social service support, community education, outreach and public policy advocacy and education.

Trunk-or-Treat from pg 1 and organizations from the community are invited to decorate their vehicle trunks with a festive, interactive theme that can range from anything from a ring toss to a mini-haunted house. “L ast year, we had a huge ‘Alice in Wonderland’ trunk; they used playing cards as sort of like mini putt-putts,” Mencarini said. “The people really get into it. Like, we have people that aren’t (YMCA) members that come here - they don’t even live here, they just love to do the trunks and be creative.” A sign-up link for trunks can be found by searching for “YMCA of the Roses - L ampeter- Strasburg YMCA” on Facebook. Those interested are asked to sign up by Saturday, Oct. 17, and asked to set up no later than 6 p.m. on the day of the event in the parking lot directly in front of the YMCA. No live animals may be part of or given out as part of the trunks, and political groups are asked to keep their trunks interactive and in the spirit of the event. All organizers of trunks are asked to hand out candy or some other form of prepackaged treat as part of their setup. There is no rain date for the event. T here will be pumpkin carving at the park’s
