Honoring a lifetime of devotion

OnSept. 18, Pete Kingsley of Strasburg was in the middle of a meeting with his fellow members of Jaycee Park’s board of directors. The other members told him they all needed to meet with someone regarding a rental, so the group made its way over to the park, located on Miller Street in Strasburg. Pete didn’t think anything of it until he saw his granddaughter’s car in the parking lot and his daughter Kim Ingram waving him over to the basketball court, and he began to suspect the meeting wasn’t related to a pavilion rental.

When Pete approached the court, which was surrounded by his friends and family members, Kim pulled a cover off the fence to reveal a gleaming new plaque. The plaque signified the dedication of the court in Pete’s honor as a way for the community to thank him for years of maintaining the park. “It caught me completely by surprise. I was

First online fundraiser for Kingdom causes planned

Since the fall of 2022, David Kieffer, president of the FaithfulGive board, has been preparing for the organization’s first online giving event to benefit organizations with a Christian mission that are active in Lancaster County. “We prayed and thought and designed and listened for a year,” said Kieffer of FaithfulGive’s five-member board and its organizational team. “Mostly we listened to what would serve various nonprofit leaders.”

The result is a three-day online

giving event, which will take place in October. More than 40 local organizations have signed on to take part in the fundraiser, which will open just after midnight on Sunday, Oct. 15, and close at the end of the day on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

To introduce the event, a breakfast will be held on Monday, Oct. 16, at Westminister Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, beginning at 7:30 a.m. In addition, a short celebration picnic will be held on Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. at Long’s Park. “There will be worship, celebration, and announcing

overwhelmed,” Pete said. “I bowed my head and said, ‘Thank you, Lord, for what they’ve done for me.’” Spectators clapped, cheered and shed a few tears as they expressed their profound appreciation for Pete.

“I wanted him to see how much everyone appreciates him,” Kim said. “I joke by calling my mom the park widow; he’s always in there planting, tending or fundraising.” Only a few weeks ago, Pete was at Jaycee Park planting 150 pachysandra flowers in the pouring rain.

Pete is one of the original founders of Jaycee Park, which was created in 1967 by members of the former Strasburg Jaycees service organization. Fellow Jaycees member Danny Scheurich came up with the idea to buy the plot of land and turn it into a park. The park would then be able to host festivals and provide a place to practice for youth sports teams. The Jaycees frequently sponsored local baseball teams at the time, but Strasburg had few baseball fields for players to use. As See Court dedication pg 5

Community fair wraps up another successful year

On Sept. 27, the West Lampeter Community Fair returned to the fairgrounds, accompanied by the aroma of funnel cakes and the rumble of tractor engines. The annual threeday celebration offered a multitude of tasty treats and exciting activities to local residents, who look forward to fair season every year.

The fair commenced by opening its various tents and freshly judged exhibits to the public. Antique tractors, locally grown produce and pieces of art displayed their ribbons and awards for fairgoers to See Fair pg 8

Awards given at the picnic will include prizes that participating organizations will compete for from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day of the event. Prize categories are the Engaged Donor prize to benefit smaller organizations; the Show Me the Money prize for the largest unique donation; a prize package from Masterpiece Marketing, which will be awarded based on a written submission; and the Just Keep Swimming award, which will be awarded by the board based on nominations by donors who submit a paragraph about why an organization has demonstrated wisdom, love, and persistent courage in challenging circumstances. Nominations for the Just Keep Swimming

award are open at https://faithfulgive.org/ prizes/.

Kieffer pointed out that the first day of the event will not be focused on giving, although the platform will be available. “It’s really a day of prayer,” he said, noting that prayer guides will be distributed to various churches that are helping FaithfulGive to spread the word. “(The guide) will enable people to learn about the organizations and pray for them,” Kieffer said.

Kieffer said that the decision to start FaithfulGive was motivated by the many Kingdom-minded organizations located in the county. “This is really a movement of people who live locally who recognize that Lancaster has a rich heritage of biblically faithful nonprofit organizations founded to reflect and live out biblical convictions in every area of life,” he said. “This was started by those who want to celebrate those organizations,

LCSWMA encourages proper battery disposal

Rechargeable batteries containing metals such as lithium and nickel can spark and explode when damaged. To combat the growing risk of battery fires, the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) has announced the launch of a public education campaign to encourage proper disposal of rechargeable batteries.

Rechargeable batteries are in many common household items, including power tools, toys, cellphones, lap-

tops, watches, vape devices and electric toothbrushes. If the rechargeable battery becomes damaged, it can cause a chemical reaction that creates a spark or explosion. Rechargeable batteries in the waste stream are prone to damage due to the impact from equipment and machinery during the waste management process.

According to Robert Zorbaugh, chief executive officer of LCSWMA, the improper disposal of rechargeable batteries is

putting trash haulers, waste disposal and recycling facilities, employees and the community at risk. Countless fires have started in the back of trash trucks and at waste disposal facilities.

Karen Gross, LCSWMA communications manager, would like the community to know that there are many free and convenient dropoff locations for end-of-life rechargeable batteries. In Lancaster County, residents can use LCSWMA’s drivethrough Household Haz-

Court dedication

Pete and his friends grew out of the Jaycees, which was a service group primarily intended for young men, they continued to keep the park in good shape due to a lack of new members.

Pete had been inspired to join the Jaycees when he was 27 years old, after he heard the Jaycee creed for the first time. The code professes the Jaycees’ primary values, such as faith in God, community and service to humanity, and Pete strives to live by it to this day. “The creed fell heavy on my heart,” Pete said.

Pete was born in Maine, and he first visited Lancaster while working as a lineman in the late ’50s. In 1961, he married his wife, Janet, who is a native of Wakefield. By 1970, Pete had built a home in Strasburg for his family, and he operated his own construc-

tion business in town for more than 30 years. “I’ve grown to love the community and the way people are here in Strasburg,” Pete said. Pete helped to set up Jaycee Park as a 501(c)(3) organization to ensure that it remains part of Strasburg for future generations.

“My dad has spent his whole life taking care of this place,” Kim said. “He’s just got that dedication for everything.”

Sierra Club plans hike

Members of the Sierra ClubLancaster Group invite the public to join them for an easy to moderate scenic hike through the Nolde Forest at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct, 14. The hike was scheduled for last spring but was postponed because of threatening weather.

The 725-acre Nolde Forest with its Environmental Educa-

tion Center, 3025 New Holland Road, Reading, features deciduous woodlands and coniferous plantations, which are laced with networks of trails that meander along streams and ponds and through diverse habitats. In addition to being treated to a scenic walk beside a stream, hikers will be able to view colorful autumn leaves,

which should be at their prime. Registration is required by visiting www.lancastersierra club.org and clicking on the event link on the calendar. For more details, call 717-575-8705 or 717-475-0586 or email SierraClubEvent@gmail.com.

admire throughout the day. The afternoon was filled with market livestock shows and live entertainment from performer Andy Rotz, who dazzled audiences with a flaming lasso and knifethrowing routine. Bluegrass outfit Barley & Steele played for the crowd before dozens of tractors fell in line for the tractor parade. As the sun set on the opening day of the fair, crowds of people looked up from their sausage sandwiches and chocolate milkshakes to watch the procession of candidates for the 2023 West Lampeter Fair Queen Contest. The group of young women comprised nine Lampeter-Strasburg High School students, and each candidate represented one of the school’s clubs or extracurricular activities. After the girls made their

way to the stage, they were individually asked questions pertaining to the fair’s activities, culture and importance to the community. Some fair queen contestants cited their favorite fair foods, while others recognized traditional activities such as the barnyard chase and the horse show in their responses. Each candidate acknowledged the importance of elevating local agriculture and timehonored traditions through the fair.

When asked what she would include in an advertisement for the West Lampeter Community Fair, senior Sarah Blount said she would emphasize the event’s accessibility. “I believe that the fair is for all ages. There is truly something for everyone,” said Blount, who represented the Lampeter-Strasburg High School’s band program.

“Obviously the food is delicious, and it gets people in the door. But once you’re here, you don’t want to leave.” After several rounds of questions, Blount was crowned the West Lampeter Fair queen of 2023. Sydney Albright, who represented the Garden Spot FFA club, was chosen as the fair queen alternate. Last year’s fair

queen, Kiera Knapp, completed the ceremony with a farewell speech, reflecting on her reigning year and passing the torch to Blount. “This was definitely the hardest public speaking competition I’ve ever done, but it was so worth it,” Blount said. “I was confident I would know what to say behind the podium, and I loved getting to see all the familiar faces in the audience.”

The following day of the fair continued the festivities with the children’s sunflower contest, the baby parade, the barnyard chase and tractor games. Lampeter-Strasburg High School’s marching band played a concert in the evening, and Rotz offered multiple shows throughout the day. The third and final day of activities concluded the fair with the All Western Horse Show, tractor pull competitions and a calf roping contest.

Leather, tattoos, bikes, heart - and toys

From the outside looking in, the annual Lancaster County Toy Ride may look like just another group of bikers out for a day on the road. But it’s more than that. The event seeks to help fund Christmas gifts for children who may not otherwise receive many presents.

on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will begin and end at American Legion Post 34, 1388 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

A monetary donation or a donation of a toy with a set minimum value is suggested. All proceeds from the event will go to Lancaster County Toys for Tots.

“Sometimes people just see the (tattoos) and the leather,” said Jimmy Emig, the ride director and an elder for the tri-state chapter of Bikers for Christ. “I think some bikers get labeled just by the look. But you can’t judge a book by a cover. Open the book. If you do, you’re going to see a big heart. It’s one big heart on two wheels. That’s what a

real biker is.”

At 1 p.m., kickstands will go up, and the participants in the Lancaster County Toy Ride will hit the road to Columbia, Marietta, Elizabethtown and back again.

“It’s a brotherhood,” said Emig. “There is nothing bigger than when you’re riding along with another biker. You may not know his name, but you know his purpose. It’s inspiring. It’s coming together for one cause.”

That brotherhood is extensive and far-reaching. Between 500 and 1,000 bikers are expected to participate in the Lancaster County Toy Ride.

“It’s the biker community,” said Emig. “Over half of them who come out are from the Lancaster area. It’s motorcycle clubs coming together. This is the biggest ride in our biker community. We average 80 to 100

riding events each year and this is the biggest one put together for a cause. This is the one that everyone circles on their calendars.”

Emig said that the Lancaster County chapter of Toys for Tots’ operating budget for this year is $80,000. The purpose of the ride is to help provide some of those funds.

“$80,000 is a pretty big number,” said Emig. “There’s no goal besides trying to help offset the costs for Toys for Tots. I think bikers can lead by example and show what happens when people come together. We need to start coming together.”

The Lancaster County Toy Ride was first established 25 years ago. In the past, toys and funds were donated directly to local children in hospitals or children who

This year marks the first time that the ride has been associated with Lancaster County Toys for Tots.

“It’s almost all the time that we’re looking to help out children,” said Emig. “When we first started this, we just wanted to help local children have a good Christmas. We’re always looking for ways to help more children. We want to keep serving the community as a brotherhood.”
