Behind the Shake Stand BY LOGAN MOYER

The milkshake stand is one of the most popular features of the West Lampeter Community Fair. The numbers on just how popular the stand is are jarring. Over the course of the three-day fair, held this year on Sept. 23, 24 and 25, the stand uses more than 350 three-gallon tubs of Turkey Hill vanilla ice cream. That’s more than

1,000 gallons or 1,500 pounds of ice cream, for anybody who does not have a calculator on standby. All that ice cream equates to more than 5,000 milkshakes sold every year, according to Jason Hair, who has operated the stand since 2021. All of the proceeds from the stand go back to the fair committee for next year’s festivities. “I don’t look at the numbers,” Hair explained.

The fair serves more than 5,000 milkshakes every

It’s More Blessed to Present Gifts That Give Hope BY JEFF FALK

One of the things that make Gifts That Give Hope so special is that it thrives in the no-judgment zone. The local nonprofit is currently gearing up for this year’s foray into the world of alternative gift giving. “We try to promote more charitable giving,” said Jenn Knepper, the founder of Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster. “I started to think about giving more meaningful gifts to my parents, things like promoting women’s education around the world. I felt like that was something my parents encouraged for me. I think it’s a chance to be creative, like what are the causes that are important to people?” Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster’s upcoming gift festival de-emphasizes material items and emphasizes experiences, altruism and charitable causes. This year’s 19th edition of the unique gift fair will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The event is free to attend, and all proceeds will benefit the participating nonprofits. “I’m always trying to make things run more smoothly,” said K nepper. “ We change things based on feedback. Each year we’re just always trying to improve on how we reach people and engage with them. We’re connected with different nonprofits, and we try to promote the things that the nonprofits See Gifts pg 9

Sticking with the fall theme, there will be plenty of autumn-oriented games set up on the church’s lawn, including a bounce house, pumpkin golf, autumn bingo, pumpkin ring toss, football toss, apple toss, beanbag throw and more. The festival will be held rain or shine; festivities will be moved indoors in the event of inclement weather. “When everybody enters the fall fest, we give them this stamp card,” Short said. “Once they complete a game, they get a stamp in that game box. Then, they can hand that stamp card in at the end and get a prize and a treat back.” A new highlight for this year’s event will be face painting. There will also be fall-themed crafts and pumpkin decorating with p u m p k i n s d o n ate d b y Cherry Crest. “We make a little pumpkin patch, and the kids can go pick their pumpkin and decorate it at the pumpkin decorating tables,” Short explained. While the event is completely free, guests are invited to bring a nonper-

ishable food item to support the church’s in-house Blessings Food Pantr y, which supports families in the Lampeter-Strasburg and Penn Manor school districts. The pantry is open from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays, as well as the first and third Saturday of every month. No appointment is needed to visit the pantry, which is also open from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays. Short said that around 300 to 500 people typically attend the fall festival. The fall festival is one of the church’s signature family events, along with its Christmas program, Easter egg hunt and vacation Bible school in the summer. Junior church is offered during the 10:30 a.m. service on Sundays for elementary students; kids’ club for elementary students is held from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month. More information about the church and its programming can be found by visiting www.lampeterumc.com or by calling 717-464-4161.

Nakamatsu will then join the orchestra for Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor, a work steeped in Norwegian folk melody and known for its dramatic opening and finale. The concert will close with Stravinsky’s “Petrushka,” a colorful depiction of a Russian street fair. It will be performed in the composer’s 1947 concert version. Johnson is one of five

“I just make milkshakes as fast as I can. ... It’s $5 a unit, so we might make $25,000.” Even at the busiest times of the day, the stand manages to serve milkshakes at an efficient clip. What makes that possible are volunte ers from L amp e t e r - S t ra s b u r g ( L - S ) High School and various churches from within the community. During the day, the stand is staffed with L-S students from the school’s Interact Club, a service organization that is a branch of Rotary International. The club, which also helps run the conjoined pizza and burgers stand, allows students to sign up for shifts during the school day that allow them to fulfill the school’s graduation requirement of 30 community service hours lo g ged over the course of four years. Getting out of school for a few hours is just a bonus. “We have over 300 kids that are in the club,” said Cathy Lynch, a retired family and consumer sciences teacher at L-S, who still advises the organization. “The fair actually could not r un without them because we help in four booths.” The milkshake assembly line starts with the ice cream scoopers, who scoop 8 to 10 ounces of vanilla ice cream into cups. After a whole tray of ice creamfilled cups are assembled, the trays will go into the freezer. They are pulled out when they are needed, which allows the workers to prepare for the rushes of customers. “It gets crazy,” explained

Church Posts Community Meal Joseph’s Table at Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, will offer a takeout meal to members of the community on Thursday, Oct. 15. Meals may be picked up from 5:30 to 6 p.m. There is no charge. Those who would like a meal should enter the parking lot from Penn Grant Road and exit onto Shiprock Road.

Ella Schaefer, a freshman at L-S. “I’d probably say, when it gets super busy we need four or five people scooping ice cream, three weighers and then I guess five people (blending).” T his year, the stand ser ved chocolate and vanilla milkshakes, root beer f loats and caramel apples. In the past, strawberr y milkshakes were also on the menu, which muddied the concocting process, Hair explained. “ T he strawber r y was such a thing because you had to have strawberry ice cream, and there wasn’t enough demand for it,” he said. “They simplified it, so we’re just using vanilla ice cream for everything.” In the past, different flavors of ice cream were used

for each corresponding flavor of milkshake. Now, chocolate syrup and chocolate milk are combined to flavor the chocolate shakes. “ T he concentrations, once you mix that in, it does give a sweeter chocolate punch,” Hair said. One thing customers will notice when they look inside the stand is how much fun the volunteer workers are having. “It’s a good way to get some hours, but it’s really nice seeing some people that you don’t always hang out with, don’t always talk to,” explained Peyton Smith, an L-S junior who spent his Thursday afternoon working at the pizza stand. “It’s good to see those people and get to interact with them.”

The main event will run from Friday, Oct. 23, through Sunday, Oct. 25, with an optional extended weekend add-on beginning Thursday, Oct. 22. Base camp for the weekend will be the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, where KTA will be set up at the outside pavilion. “ We welcome folks to stop by, whether they’re registered for the weekend activities or not, to meet us and hear about the work we do throughout the commonwealth,” said Kate Prisby, manager of events and programs for KTA. “Each year we work with volunteers to maintain hundreds of miles of PA hiking trails, offer skills-based training to prepare hikers for safe adventures outdoors, and we provide single-day and weekend events open to the public.” As Prisby explained, the weekend will feature more than 50 events throughout the region. “In the Columbia area, there are walking tours dis-

sylvania while promoting responsible use of the state’s natural resources. “If you’ve been hiking for a while, there’s a good chance you’ve walked down a trail that Keystone Trails Association has helped maintain,” Prisby said. “If you’re new to hiking, we love welcoming folks out on trails See Outdoor pg 8
