Car Show To Benefit Santa’s Helpers BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
G
lenn Davis is adamant that the Santa’s Helpers car show set for Saturday, Oct. 17, take center stage over the organization’s presence in the Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) School District. “We like to be under the radar,” Glenn said. “We just need the car show to do well so we can support the kids.” This is the group’s first car show, although Glenn has attended plenty. He bought a fully restored 1967 Camaro with modifications about 10 years ago. “It would’ve been a very good leading competitor on the drag strip back in its time,” Glenn remarked. “I’ve always been attracted to Camaros. It was my dream car in high school.” Glenn invites other owners of dream vehicles to bring their cars, trucks, and motorcycles to the Santa’s Helpers car show. Street rods, muscle cars, antiques, imports, and more will be welcome. Trophies will be awarded in eight categories.
“Everyone’s got a pride factor in their hobby or toy,” Glenn said. “That’s why we didn’t limit them.” The car show will be held at the Lampeter Fire Company grounds, 851 Village Road, Lancaster, from noon to 4 p.m. In the event of rain, the car show will take place on Sunday, Oct. 18, from noon to 4 p.m. Most of the area’s other car shows were canceled this year, so Glenn is anticipating a big crowd. “I’m hoping there are a lot of other car buffs like myself who are chomping at the bit to get out,” Glenn said. “I think it’s going to be a very fun event. I hope to see a lot of people out there.” A fee has been set to exhibit a vehicle. Spectators may attend free of charge. To supplement the eye candy, the event will include music; prize drawings for car cleaning kits, gift cards, cash, and more; photo opportunities with motorhead models by donation; and woodgrilled burgers and hot dogs, other food, and beverages for sale. When the 2020 Solanco CROP Hunger Walk takes place on Saturday, Oct. 17, participants may help to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first walk, which was held in 1980. There will be several photo opportunities, said planning committee member Mary Etta Reinhart. “We’re trying to make it a fun event but a socially distanced event,” she noted. Reinhart shared that the planning committee discussed the walk in light of coronavirus mitigation guidelines and decided to go ahead with holding the event because it takes place entirely outdoors. School-year programs for students in kindergarten through ninth grade will begin at Solid Rock Youth Ministries, 34 E. State St., Quarryville, on Tuesday, Oct. 6. Information about the after-school and evening offerings is available at www.solidrockquarry ville.com/school-programs. Additionally, the Christian ministry has planned two fundraising events that will take place in the coming weeks. An online auction will be held from Monday, Oct. 19, to Thursday, Oct. 29. The third annual 5K and fun run has been set for Saturday, Oct. 31. Registration for the 5K must be completed by Monday, Oct. 12, to be guaranteed an event T-shirt. Dana Nixon and her daughter, Andrea Nixon, have coordinated the auction for the last three years. Typically, live and silent auctions are held in conjunction with a ham dinner, but a sit-down meal for 200 people was not feasible with social distancing guidelines. “We’re hoping it’s a good thing,” Dana remarked. “We hear people do better on virtual auctions than in person.” She noted that participation in an online auction is not limited to the capacity of the fellowship hall where Solid Rock’s in-person auctions were held. Individuals from anywhere may place bids, as long as they are able to pick up their items at Solid Rock from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 31. Payment will be made at pickup, and cash and check will of be preferred.
Fall and home décor, jewelry, indoor furniture, a vintage table, gardening supplies, gift certificates, and more have been donated for the auction. Union Presbyterian Church continued its tradition of contributing a hand-knotted comforter, and Wesley Church repeated its popular package of a fire pit and s’mores supplies. Library Friends Plan Book Sale
Scouts, AMVETS Plan Veterans Wreath Ride
The Friends of the Lancaster Public Library will hold their annual Fall ReSort Book Sale from Friday through Sunday, Oct. 9 to 11. The sale will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 9 and 10, as well as from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the Book ReSort Center, 225 N. Marshall St., Lancaster, located at the corner of North Marshall and Fulton streets. The sale will offer more than 20,000 books of varied subject matter, including fiction and nonfiction. Vinyl records, DVDs, and audiobooks will be for sale, as well as hundreds of music CDs. On Oct. 11, the Friends will offer a half-price sale. The book sale will operate with COVID-19 safety measures in place. Face masks or face shields must be worn at all times. Shoppers will enter the sale via the Book ReSort’s side door, accessible from Fulton Street, and they will exit via the back loading dock. In addition, the sale is limited to 25 shoppers at a time to allow for social distancing. Customers are asked to postpone their shopping trip if they are feeling unwell or if they have recently traveled to any states on the Pennsylvania travel quarantine list. There will be fewer tables of items than usual, so volunteers will continuously restock from the Friends’ inventory of donated books. All proceeds from the sale will directly benefit Lancaster Public Library and play a vital role in the library’s operating budget. Free on-site parking is available, and credit cards are welcome. The Friends of the Lancaster Public Library hold several book sales each year that raise nearly $200,000 for the library. Additionally, the Friends have two bookstores that are open yearround: the Marshall Street Bookstore, 225 N. The usual fundraising strategies used by the members of Boy Scout Troop 64 have had to be modified this year for the expected reason. That prompted new ideas for raising money to support Wreaths Across America (WAA), which Troop 64 has participated in for several years. Thus, the Veterans Wreath Ride was created. Hosted by AMVETS Post 19, 715 Fairview Ave., Lancaster, the Veterans Wreath Ride for motorcyclists will be held on Saturday, Oct. 17, rain or shine. Registration will be open from 10 to 11:45 a.m., during which food may be purchased from the post kitchen. The ride will leave the post at noon and will end at the veterans’ memorial at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery (IGNC) in Annville about an hour later. There is a cost to participate in the ride, and the money collected will be given to WAA. The purpose of WAA is to remember, honor, and teach by laying holiday wreaths on veterans’ graves in December each year, Troop 64 assistant Scoutmaster Nina Evans said. “We’re remembering the veterans, their service, their sacrifice. We’re honoring their families. We’re teaching the youths about the military and the sacrifices that have been made for them to

live in a land that is free,” she explained. When Troop 64 first got involved with WAA a few years ago, it focused on collecting money for wreaths at IGNC. A former troop member is interred at IGNC, as is the father of a current Scout. The number of graves at IGNC has increased to about 43,000, and the troop has expanded its impact to local cemeteries. The troops laid wreaths at Landisville and Salunga cemeteries last year and will add Rohrerstown/Lutheran and Reformed Cemetery and Laurel Hill Cemetery in Columbia - a total of 1,000 veterans this year. Three additional burial grounds may be added next year. Evans is recruiting businesses to sponsor the purchase of wreaths, and she hopes to get veterans’ families involved as well, as much for the families as for the Scouts. Evans appreciates being able to share the families’ personal stories with the Scouts. “I can’t give them connections like that with anything I could teach them from a book,” she said. “This is a real thing we’re doing.” Evans related an interaction she had with a woman who sponsored a wreath for her son’s grave last year. “I realized later that she was a Gold Star mom. A lifelong member of Assembly of God (AG) churches, Mark Thiboldeaux never expected he would pastor a congregation in a different denomination, but the Lord has a way of surprising people. Mark grew up in north Philadelphia and earned a bachelor’s degree in Bible from Valley Forge Christian College. He held youth pastor positions in New Jersey and in Berwick before accepting the role of senior pastor at Strasburg Assembly of God. “When I took it over, it was getting ready to close. If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. In December 2019, a colleague at the Charles Snyder Funeral Home, where Mark has worked as a chaplain since 2010, suggested he consider applying to fill the pastoral vacancy at High View Church of God (COG), 2470 Leaman Road, Strasburg. Mark declined the candidacy but agreed to serve as interim pastor. “There were too many doctrinal hurdles and the worship styles were too different,” Mark explained. Two days after Christmas 2019, Mark and Julie left for Israel, spending two weeks relaxing and discerning God’s will. When they returned to Strasburg, Mark began working at High View, primarily just as a preacher for worship services. In April, the pastoral candidate the church was pursuing withdrew his name from consideration, and the church board asked Mark if he would consider staying. To abide by COG regulations, the congregation filed for a waiver so the interim pastor could become the full-time pastor. Mark and the elders also had a long conversation about beliefs and traditions, and he ultimately traded his AG pastoral credentials for COG credentials. “We decided that we would focus on the things we agreed upon,” Mark said. Mark enrolled in a religious global studies program at Liberty University School of Divinity in January. As part of the master’s degree work, he was required to evaluate church life, so he looked at High View. “I saw some very excellent foundational things at the church, but outreach was a gap. They really wanted that to change,” Mark recalled. A prime opportunity was presented with the arrival of the novel coronavirus. Church members dropped off meals to people affected by the virus, whether physically or economFREE PARKING
ically. Then a friend of the church gave a significant financial gift that the church has opted to use to support community meals. Beginning on Oct. 7, the meals will be held on the first Wednesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. free of charge. Registration is not required. Although the church lacks a commercial kitchen, the meals will be prepared under Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture guidelines and will include catered aspects from a local restaurant. A “parenting toolbox” class will follow the meals at 7 p.m. Child care will be provided. Everyone who attends the meals may receive bags of nonperishable foods and gift cards to a local market. The new outreach is a practical way that High View is carrying out the message of Matthew 25, which Mark is currently preaching through. “It’s a basic way of caring for those who are hungry, thirsty, naked, in prison, or foreigners,” he said. Worship services are held on Sundays at 10:15 a.m., Sunday school meets at 9 a.m., and Bible studies take place on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Prerecorded audio messages for worship at home are posted at www.hvcog.org. The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps distributed water and information about #RescueChristmas on Sept. 18 to kickstart local fundraising efforts. Lancaster commanding officer Maj. Dean Satterlee noted that the Red Kettle campaign has historically been The Salvation Army’s main fundraising campaign. “We need the community’s help more than ever this year to help us rescue Christmas for so many in need,” Satterlee said. “We know the Lancaster community has always answered the call to help those in need, and we are optimistic this campaign will be no different.” With more people facing hardship this year, the opportunity to help is greater than ever. “Because of COVID-19, we have seen our 2020 service numbers grow to be significantly higher,” Satterlee said. “After the Great Recession of 2008 ended, The Salvation Army served an additional 10 million people over the following three years, and we expect a similar prolonged need from this current pandemic.” Since March, The Salvation Army USA has provided more than 100 million meals, which is a 155% increase over the same period last year. In addition to the need for food relief, housing has been a main focus of The Salvation Army’s recent service. With many Americans owing money for missed rent or mortgage payments, the organization anticipates a substantial increase in requests for emergency financial help for expenses such as rent/mortgage payments, utility bills, and food. Locally, The Salvation Army has provided almost $13,000 in rental and utility assistance since March. “We have served over 10,000 meals with our food relief assistance so far
during this pandemic,” Satterlee reported. “In addition, we have clocked thousands of hours of disaster relief, social service, and emotional spiritual care given by dozens of employees and volunteers during this time.” Since 1865, The Salvation Army has been providing social and spiritual services to communities around the world. Additionally, everyone will be required to wear masks during registration. Individually wrapped refreshments, along with hot tea and coffee, will be available before the walk begins at 9 a.m. and upon participants’ return. The Solanco CROP Hunger Walk is 5 miles long. The first part of the route will take place on a paved trail. Individuals will have the option of then proceeding onto grassy paths, or they may complete another loop on the pavement. Reinhart said the entirely paved route is ideal for people with strollers. Masks will not need to be worn if participants maintain social distance. Leashed dogs are welcome at the event. Reinhart related that at last year’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of the nationwide CROP Hunger Walk, one of the celebratory photos featured a dog that has participated in five walks. The committee has created three ways to participate in the Solanco CROP Hunger Walk. First, individuals may do as they have in previous years and join the
walk in person. They may pick up fundraising envelopes by contacting Reinhart at 717-808-4306 or ereinhart403@comcast.net and solicit donations from friends, family members, co-workers, and others. Funds may be turned in on Oct. 17 or within two weeks after the walk. Second, individuals may participate entirely virtually by creating a fundraising page at www.crop hungerwalk.org/quarryvillepa and committing to complete a 5-mile walk. Fundraising may be done entirely digitally, so participants never need to be face-to-face with anyone. The third option is a hybrid of the other two. Participants may pick up envelopes and collect donations from others but complete the 5 miles at another time or location. “Any variation works,� Reinhart commented. However the money is collected, the important thing is that it is collected. The proceeds will be divided, with 75% going to Church World Service and 25% to the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank. “The need is up. The need is huge worldwide,� Reinhart said.
