CommUNITY 5K Will Support Transitional Housing By Dayna M. Reidenouer

“We do have a house,” said Dave Firestone, a member of the steering committee for the Homes of Hope program in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District. “We are in the process of getting it ready for a family and hoping to have the first family in around November.” Homes of Hope is a program that operates through Love INC of Lancaster County. It provides transitional housing and mentorship for families experiencing homelessness. The program helps students remain in their districts so they have less disruption to their lives. The location of the new

Homes of Hope house will remain confidential to preserve the dignity of its short-term residents. Only mentors and Homes of Hope staff members will know the exact address. The steering committee has raised funds to cover the cost of rent, utilities, and upkeep through the annual CommUNITY 5K event. On the occasion of last year’s 5K, Firestone expressed his hope that the group would secure a home and be hosting a family by the end of 2017. Unfortunately, the group encountered difficulty in finding a suitable house. “It’s very hard to find a house that’s affordable, so the search continued. Somebody actually came to us and said a family was moving out of their place, and they thought it would be great for this program,” Firestone explained. “It’s The organizers of the fifth annual CommUNITY 5K hope to draw a crowd for

Two notable musicians will be featured during the 33rd annual Apple Festival hosted by Boehm’s Chapel Society. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the campus of Boehm’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 13 W. Boehm’s Road, Willow Street. Vocalist Katie Wieand of Strasburg and woodwind specialist Tim Price of Reading will perform with Gracenotes, a 20piece jazz band from Grace Community Church (GCC) of Willow Street. The group was formed by Darin Esterly, the music and arts coordinator at GCC, who plays saxophone in the band. Gracenotes is one facet of the music ministry at GCC, with many of the band members also playing in the congregation’s worship bands. Gracenotes members range in age from 16 to 70s and in skill from student to professional. “Gracenotes tries to play at holidays, about four times a year. This is our first time to venture off-campus,” Esterly remarked. “We are inching more toward getting out there and showing what God is doing through musical arts.” The jazz band specializes in standards from the 1940s to 1960s. “We try to have the American songbook: Count Basie, Mancini, Gershwin, and more,” Esterly said.
