Joining Forces For The Community By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Many of the churches of Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) School District have combined forces to host two special events in previous years. Now, they have further collaborated to make Strasburg Day and CommUNITY 5K one great affair. “We’ve combined two events, and that’s very cool,” said Bob Bronkema, pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg. Willow Street Mennonite Church member Karen Bender, who has helped to organize the 5K race, noted that both events fell on the same day last year. The race was held at Lampeter Church of the Brethren (LCB), and Strasburg Day took place at the Strasburg Jaycee Park. Many people who participated in the 5K also planned to attend the Strasburg event. “During that day, the conversation started,” Bender said. “It just made a whole lot of sense.” The CommUNITY 5K was launched six years ago to raise money for the L-S Homes of Hope program. LCB

has hosted the race for the past five years, and while the committee is sad to leave the 5K’s first home, it is excited to offer race participants a different course with new challenges.

Among the dozens of booths that will be at the West Lampeter Fair on Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 25 to 27, the space hosted by Willow Street Mennonite Church (WSMC) has been designed to be a bit different. Instead of showcasing products or only handing out informational pamphlets, the space will be filled with child-friendly activities, including a large corn bin with many toys. “We want to celebrate with the community,” said Lindsey Stiger, church member and Tea Time ministry leader. “Come and hang out.” The reason for the celebration is the 50th anniversary of Willow

Walk To End Epilepsy Will Raise Awareness, Research Funds By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Aaron Wingert of Lancaster was 30 when he experienced his first epileptic seizure. “Everything is normal in your life, and then you wake up in the back of an ambulance,” he said. Nineteen-year-old Nadine DeBalko of Adamstown was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 12 and had to change her perceptions about the disorder. “I thought it was just older people who had it,” she recalled. Lancaster resident Kerri Michnya never remembers

a time without seizures. She was diagnosed at age 10. Now age 42, she has been seizure-free for 11 years. Both Michnya’s and Wingert’s seizures are well-controlled by medication. DeBalko opted to have surgery two years ago to See Walk To End Epilepsy pg 8

Epilepsy Foundation of Eastern Pennsylvania staffer Kerri Michnya (left) and volunteers Aaron Wingert (middle) and Nadine DeBalko have helped to plan Lancaster County’s first Walk to End Epilepsy, which will be held in the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium on Oct. 12.
