Eight Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School students will participate in a virtual version of the West Lampeter Community Fair queen contest at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 23, which would have been the start of the 96th annual agricultural showcase. Most elements of the fair have been canceled, and the fair’s board of directors requests that spectators not attend the few events that will take place. The fair queen contest will be held in the L-S Performing Arts Center and will be closed to the public. Instead, it will be streamed live on YouTube, and the link will be posted at www.l-spioneers.org and on the L-S School District’s social media accounts. The contest will open with a recording of the national anthem sung by 2019 fair queen alternate Jessica Heisey. The 2019 fair queen, Jessica Herr, will give a farewell address.

The typical article reviewing the activities of the retiring West Lampeter Fair queen includes lists of public appearances, such as parades and service club meetings. “Outpour Kids” Seeks Choir Participants BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
In February, Grace Community Church (GCC) of Willow Street children’s music ministry director Katie Wieand excitedly announced plans for the launch of Outpour Kids, a new opportunity for primary grade students to develop their musical inclinations. Then, the coronavirus disrupted lives, and the musical theater camp slated for June was canceled. The Wieand family will be involved with leading the Outpour Kids Children’s Community Worship Choir at Grace Community Church of Willow Street this fall.

School Opens Education Center
PSPCA Lancaster Center Receives Grant
St. John Neumann Catholic School recently marked the first day in its new Education Center addition at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Lancaster.
The Lancaster County Community Foundation, in partnership with the United Way of Lancaster County, has awarded the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA) Lancaster Center with a $3,500 grant to assist with the Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) surgeries of community cats in Lancaster. The funds are being put into action immediately to provide free spay and neuter surgery for community cats in the Lancaster area. Upon usage of the grant funds, TNR surgeries will continue at the PSPCA Lancaster Center for a set amount. TNR involves the humane trapping of feral cats, bringing them to a veterinarian to be altered and vaccinated and, after recovery, returning them to their outdoor homes. TNR aims to reduce the number of stray cats over time; relieve cats of the constant stresses of mating and pregnancy; reduce mating behaviors such as roaming, yowling,

St. John Neumann Catholic School marked the first day in its new Education Center addition at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Lancaster after relocating from St. Anne School in downtown Lancaster. Designed by Lancaster architectural firm Hammel Associates Architects LLC, the addition and renovations to the parish buildings were completed by Wohlsen. The project provided the Catholic education facility
with nine additional classrooms, restrooms, and office support spaces. Upgrades to the west portion of the church building are designed to support the education facilities and increase security and accessibility. Select renovations to the church continue and are scheduled for completion by the end of September. A special event to celebrate the project’s completion is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 24.

TNR can also help protect the local wild bird population. The TNR services provided at the PSPCA Lancaster Center will include the spay/neuter surgery, rabies and FVRCP vaccines, ear tipping to denote the cat has been altered and vaccinated, flea and tick treatment, ear mite treatment and ear cleaning. TNR services will be scheduled on Thursdays through October or until the grant funding is used, serving 15 cats each week. Traps will be available to rent for a set fee at the PSPCA Lancaster Center. Upon return of the trap, most of the fee will be refunded. Community members who would like to take part in the TNR effort for cats throughout the region may email lancaster@pspca.org to schedule an appointment.

Aaron’s Acres will accept applications for the 2020-21 school year program. Aaron’s Acres will offer adolescents and young adults ages 13 to 25 age-appropriate virtual programming from October through December. Zoom sessions will be held every other Tuesday, beginning on Oct. 6. Activities will include games, crafts, cooking, and music. There is an application fee for interested participants, but no additional fee to participate in the programming. Interested participants are encouraged to apply online by visiting https://aaronsacres.org/ programs/registration/. Based on feedback provided by parents of younger participants, Aaron’s Acres will offer younger children pre-recorded videos from friends of Aaron’s Acres. Videos will include Aaron’s Acres staff singing camp songs, other music activities, reptiles, dancing, and more. Videos will be shared with the public and can be watched at any time via Aaron’s Acres’ YouTube channel. There is no registration for younger children and no charge to watch these videos. New video content will be posted on https://aarons acres.org and Aaron’s Acres’ social media accounts every other week starting in September and continuing through the beginning of December. The school year program will be reassessed prior to the new year to determine if Aaron’s Acres will continue virtual programming or move forward with in-person programming starting in January. Gabby is a cheerleader and a member of National Honor Society (NHS), and she attends the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center’s half-day Advanced Health Careers program. A waitlist will be created when the choir is full. Rehearsals will be held in a large classroom, with the floor marked to indicate where students may sit or stand. Choir manager Michelle Rohrer will implement a system that enables children to be dropped off and picked up securely without adults needing to enter the building. Additionally, the church has been equipped for socially distanced seating. High-quality audio and video streaming capability has been added so that worship services and the Nov. 20 performance can be broadcast into other areas of the building. This will provide capacity for choir members’ families to attend the performance. “Putting on the Full Armor of God” is the theme of the choir’s fall session. Wieand’s husband, Matt, will help to lead devotionals related to the theme, and her seventh-grade daughter, Audrey, will assist.

Eight students recorded themselves singing parts of a specific song, and the recordings were compiled into a group performance that was posted online. “We were pleased we had the ability to offer something,” Wieand commented, adding that she recognized that students were burnt out by virtual learning, so the decreased participation was not unexpected. Now that in-person gatherings are permitted if organized correctly, Wieand is once again excited to host an Outpour Kids program at GCC, 212 Peach Bottom Road, Willow Street. The Outpour Kids Children’s Community Worship Choir will meet on seven Thursday evenings from Oct. 1 to Nov. 12, with a final dress rehearsal and performance on Friday, Nov. 20. The fall session had initially been scheduled on Wednesdays, but it was moved to accommodate AWANA programs at local churches and GCC’s youth group, which will use the church building on Wednesday evenings. “We’re being very cautious and respectful of keeping kids safe,” Wieand said. “We have done a
knowledge of and a love for Jesus,” Wieand said. During the fall and spring sessions, students will learn to sing in unison and simple parts; practice singing basics such as proper breathing, diction, and posture; develop choral disciplines like watching the director and choir etiquette; and gain an understanding of worship to God and service to the church. There is a cost per student to participate in the fall session. Family discounts are not offered, but scholarships are available for those with financial need. I hope it’s a song that comes to their minds when they’re facing challenges,” Wieand said. “It’s totally a God thing that this theme was chosen last year. Jessica Herr from pg 1 fair has been a significant part of the Herr family members’ lives. Jessica’s parents are Eric and Melissa Herr, who are the co-chairs of the club food stands and practically live at the fair each September. “My parents have set an example of volunteering and having a servant’s heart,� Jessica said. Jessica has helped in the food stands and in the fair office in recent years, and she has pitched in on some of the grimier jobs as well. “Some of my best memories are cleaning up trash (at the fair) with friends and family,� Jessica said. “I love the fair. I like to say it’s my favorite holiday.� In previous years, Jessica also exhibited animals in the livestock shows. This year, she got to help with the sale on the closing day of the fair, and she called it the highlight of her year. “Buyers had donated money to support a student in need,� Jessica recalled. “You could tell that people wanted to come together and support that family. That was a really impactful moment for me. It showed me why I’m so grateful to call West Lampeter my home fair.� The last official duty Jessica performed as fair queen was assisting with the chicken barbecue fundraiser in June. “I look forward to it every year, but participating in it was a highlight,� she said. “We

The community was excited for some normalcy.� Jessica graduated from L-S this year and is taking a gap year to serve as the Pennsylvania FFA Association’s leadership team secretary. Although this year has been tough, I’m so grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to serve in this capacity.� Jessica’s reign started out in the usual way: She competed against other LampeterStrasburg High School students, each representing a different school club - Jessica represented the Garden Spot FFA chapter - on the opening night of the fair. For the next three days, Jessica stayed busy on the fairgrounds, interacting with visitors, awarding ribbons in the livestock shows, and delivering hamburger buns and ketchup bottles to winning bidders at the leftovers auction. She had time to help with the baby parade and to visit the fair restaurant. Then, in January, Jessica represented the West Lampeter Fair in the state fair queen competition, where she met her personal goal of placing in the top five and formed friendships with several other candidates. “It was exciting to represent our small fair at the state level,� Jessica commented. “It was cool to talk about the tradition of 95 years (of being strictly agriculture, without commercial rides). It was a really awesome experience.� Serving as fair queen was a dream come true because the
convention at Penn State University in the summer, but it was conducted via Zoom this year. Jessica noted that it was gratifying to be chosen to serve because state officers are elected by a group of their peers. She is serving with Emma Musser from Elizabethtown Area High School, and two other Lancaster County representatives Brandon Bixler from Garden Spot High School and Arilyn Oatman from Penn Manor High School - were state officers last year. Orchestra Posts Music Education Program In collaboration with Carnegie Hall, the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra is participating in the Link Up program The Orchestra Rocks, a music education program provided by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute (WMI), during the 2020-21 season. The nearly 5,500 students participating in Link Up will participate in a virtual culminating concert in May 2021 where they will sing and play the recorder or the violin with the orchestra from home. This performance often serves as students’ first concert experience and provides them with the opportunity to apply the musical concepts they have studied. For more than 30 years, Link Up has paired orchestras with students in grades three through five at schools in their local communities to explore orchestral repertoire and fundamental musical skills, including creative work and composition, through a hands-on music curriculum. Link Up provides a
free, yearlong curriculum that teachers can implement, along with classroom materials, online video and audio resources, and the professional development and support necessary to make the program an engaging experience for students. The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra is one of 120 national and international organizations chosen for this program. Since 2003, Carnegie Hall has partnered with professional, community, and university orchestras across the U.S. and around the world to support their existing education programs and strengthen their partnerships with local schools. In the 2020-21 season, Link Up will partner with sites in the U.S., as well as in China, Canada, Colombia, Spain, Kenya, New Zealand, and Japan, to serve approximately 450,000 students and teachers globally. Church To Sell Apple Butter, Soup

The Boehm’s Chapel Apple Festival, scheduled for Oct. 10, has been canceled this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, fresh apple butter and holiday bean soup will be available for purchase starting on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Boehm’s United Methodist Church, 13 W. Boehms Road, Willow Street. The apple butter is made the old-fashioned way in copper kettles over wood fires. There is a fee per pint for the apple butter and a fee per quart for the soup. The food will be available on Oct. 10 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Preorders may be made, but are not required, by emailing the church secretary at secretary@boehmsumc.org.
