Gala Will Benefit Mom’s House By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“Paths to Prosperity: A Story of Two Generations” has been set as the theme for the third annual gala to benefit Mom’s House of Lancaster. The event will be held on Friday, Oct. 12, at Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster. The doors will open at 5 p.m., at which time attendees may purchase beverages and place bids in a silent auction. The plated dinner will be served at 6 p.m. A social hour will be held following the meal along with a program that will include a live auction and several speakers. Lori Burkholder will act as master of ceremonies. The auctions will feature jewelry, getaways, fine dining, spa experiences, sports memorabilia, and entertainment. There will also be an opportunity to win a stay in a Lancaster County bed-and-breakfast.
Mom’s House executive director Sara Johns and gala committee member Carole Kirchner related that the client speakers are slated to be an adult who attended Mom’s House as a child, a mother who graduated from the program, and a father who has participated in the program as well. “We give (parents) a chance to break the cycle of poverty through education and child care,” Johns explained. “They offer support to the moms and dads to get their educations,” Kirchner added. The mission of Mom’s House of Lancaster, located at 415 S. Queen St., Lancaster, is to break the cycle of poverty by helping single parents reach their educational goals. Church Will Celebrate New Home, New Season Oak Hill Fellowship Church will host Ministry Launch Sunday at its new location on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 9 a.m. The congregation moved into space it is renting from Zion United Church of Christ (UCC), at 902 Winter Hill Road, Strasburg, on Aug. 5, and the service on Sept. 9 will lay out the vision for Oak Hill’s future in its new home. “The congregation and leadership at Zion UCC have been extremely gracious in this rental agreement, and we pray that the light of Jesus will continue to shine from Winter Hill Road as a result of this decision,” remarked Oak Hill pastor Ben Miller. Oak Hill was planted in 2008 with a vision to help reach the Solanco community with the good news of Jesus Christ. The congregation met in a couple of locations, most recently renting space at 15 E. Looking back on the opening of The Trust Performing Arts Center, located at 37 N. Market St., Lancaster, five years ago, executive director Robert Bigley admitted that the new venture held some surprises. “We didn’t really know what we were getting into,” he said, adding that the opportunity to start a downtown performing arts center has had many positive results. “We are honored to have been a part of the arts renaissance in Lancaster this past decade,” Bigley stated That delight is exhibited in the lineup that has been chosen to celebrate The Trust’s fifth anniversary. “We are pulling out all the stops,” announced Bigley. Returning artists who will perform will include the Donald Sinta Quartet, Daniel Hsu, New York Polyphony, and Christopher Shih and Friends. The King’s Singers, a group celebrating its 50th anniversary, will perform at The Trust for the first time. All concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. On Friday, Sept. 7, The Trust will hold its seasonal launch party, where a showcase of local choreographers will present their works in competition. “The AY/dancers will choose one of those (works) to present (at The Trust),”

explained Bigley. A-Y/dancers will perform on Saturday, Nov. 17, and Sunday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Durang Dance Collective Presentations at the venue. A-Y/dancers will perform three pieces by world-renowned choreographers and one by the winner of the local competition. Bigley noted that the Donald Sinta Quartet, made up of four saxophonists who play transcriptions of classical music, crossover songs, and some fun pieces, will open the season on Thursday, Oct. 4. “They played at The Trust in our first season,” recalled Bigley. “They had just won (gold) at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, which is the most important chamber music competition in America.” Bigley added that the acoustics of The Trust are well suited to the group’s sound. Bigley was also excited to announce that The Kings’s Singers will perform at
The Trust on Tuesday, Dec. 4, and Wednesday, Dec. 5. Bigley noted that the London-based group is the “most famous vocal ensemble in the world.” Pianist Daniel Hsu was only a teenager when he first played at The Trust during the venue’s third season. “He had just won the Concert Artists Guild award (when he performed here before), and in 2017, he won bronze in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition,” said Bigley, who added that Hsu will be just 21 when he appears at The Trust on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019. New York Polyphony, a four-man Grammy-nominated classical a capella group, will return to The Trust for the third time on Sunday, Feb. 17, and Monday, Feb. 18, 2019. On Friday, Feb. 8, and Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019, the one-man show “Bonhoeffer in Prison” will be presented. “Freud’s Last Session,” will be presented on Friday, March 29, at 7:30p.m.; Saturday, March 30, at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, March 31, at 2 p.m. The play, which imagines a series of meetings between Sigmund Freud and C. S. Lewis, will be staged in the mahogany-paneled board room with a fireplace. Limited tickets will be available for this theater-in-the-round experience. The 1719 Hans Herr House and Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street, will host a hearth cooking class from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 22. Using the house’s Germanstyle raised hearth, participants will make soup, bread, and a dessert. They will then share the meal. Patricia Motter, a longtime guide at the Herr House, will lead the class. She often demonstrates the use of the hearth for special events at the Herr House. Before cooking stoves were invented, people cooked on an open-hearth fireplace located in the kitchen. On a raised section of the fireplace, or hearth, a smaller fire was built for use in cooking. The Bedouin Fires will perform acoustic music at Emmaus Road Café, 1886 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Saturday, Sept. 8. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the music will begin at 7:30 p.m. The Bedouin Fires, a folk and rock group, formed in 2005 when Scott Weyman, providing drums and vocals, and Caley Roark, playing the keyboard, horn, and harmonica, united their musical talents for a variety show. After Roark recruited friend Kirk Landis, a singer and guitarist, the trio initially held practices in the local high school’s band room. The band expanded its sound in 2007 when mutual friend John Girvin joined the group to sing and play the bass. The quartet played throughout southcentral Pennsylvania, winning a Battle of the Bands competition in 2010 and co-headlining the 2012 Barnfire Music Festival. The group also gave its first performance in downtown Lancaster in 2013. Local guitarist, bassist, and vocalist Matt Huber was added in 2014, completing the current lineup. In February 2015, The Bedouin Fires hosted its first benefit concert, Live for Celebrate Recovery, to raise money for Providence Church’s Celebrate Recovery program. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will host Railroad Heritage Days on Saturday, Sept. 8, and Sunday, Sept. 9. Museum collections manager Dodie Robbins will present “Hidden Treasures of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania” on Sept 8 at 10:30 a.m. in the auditorium. Frank Gillespie will demonstrate blacksmithing on both days in the outdoor yard. Railroad Heritage Days will also feature the railroad-focused fine art of Peter Lerro. That led the leadership to inquire about available space on the first floor of the building belonging to Zion UCC. “The facility at Winter Hill Road has better parking, a handicapped-accessible lobby, three times the number of kids’ classrooms for our many young families, more office space, and a fellowship hall that provides a worship center with more seating,” Miller said. “Our congregation is excited about the opportunities

A Woman’s Concern, a local pregnancy resource center founded in 1972, has been located in downtown Lancaster on Duke Street for more than 20 years. In August, the organization opened a new location at 1102 Millersville Pike to help support the community. The new location triples the size of the center’s original home office, enabling it to reach a new quadrant of the city while expanding its programs, services, and resources to serve more families. It will still maintain a presence in Lancaster city with its East Chestnut Street satellite location. A Woman’s Concern continues to offer free, confidential care, support, and services to women and families in need. To celebrate the opening of the new location, A Woman’s Concern will host an open house event on Sunday, Sept. 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. The event will provide an opportunity for members of the community to tour the new facilities, as well as meet the staff and some of the volunteers. Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, founded by Jonina Turzi and Sarah Salluzzo, is a nonprofit micro-sanctuary created to advocate for farm animals. “We have a few acres, and we have a few ambassadors for each species,� explained Turzi. “We rescue animals, and we hold public events where humans can interact with the animals and hear their stories.� Turzi noted that the animals at the farm were rescued from abusive or neglectful situations, but they are not available for adoption. She listed two types of chickens, sheep, dairy cows, pygmy goats, a turkey, and several ducks that now live permanently at the sanctuary. Brendan Stengle of Music for Everyone said that the organization has provided Lancaster with thousands of musical moments through its downtown piano program, but what is not as well known is how many grants have been given to local school districts in the dozen years Music for Everyone has existed. “Last year, we gave $112,000 in grants to 13 different school districts,� said Stengle. “As an organization, we have invested more than $1.6 million in direct support for instruments.� Stengle said that the organization is currently purchasing instruments in bulk to stretch its buying power. “Over the next five years, our goal is to repair every school-owned instrument in

The Chamber Choir of the Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) recently participated in a GO! Summer mission assignment with Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM). The 29 participating students visited Indonesia from June 26 to July 14. The choir, directed by Rosemary Blessing, performed in four airports, multiple museums, several Mennonite churches, two cultural festivals also featuring Muslim and Buddhist performances, a rice field, the tip of a volcano, two Islamic boarding schools, a palace, and one mosque. At some of the venues, the students were able to have faith conversations with Muslims. The trip challenged participants to widen their worldviews. These interfaith experiences were organized by the director of the Indonesian Mennonite Diakonal Service, Paulus Hartono, who has worked with peacemaking and Christian-Muslim relations in his city of Solo and throughout the country for the past 20 years. Following his experience with the Chamber Choir, Hartono posted a video on Facebook proposing three languages for peace: smiles, singing, and taking pictures. The trip occurred in the wake of five bombings in the Indonesian city of Surabaya in May. Three churches were among the targets of the attacks. After intensive security analyses, EMM, its Indonesian partners, and MCCL determined that the risk level for the choir was low. Families of choir members were able to make the final decision on whether to allow their children to participate in the
trip. Nearly all of the families decided to continue with the trip as planned. Choir members used the entire year to prepare for their third international trip with EMM’s GO! Summer program, a short-term mission exposure opportunity offered during the summer. Both local and global opportunities are available. Previous international trips included locations such as Germany, Albania, and Bulgaria. The choir’s preparation included learning several Indonesian songs and visiting the Philadelphia Indonesian Mennonite Church. Multiple fundraisers were held, including a dinner featuring authentic Indonesian cuisine. Participants were required to go through a slightly abbreviated version of the EMM application process that other short-term applicants undergo. Much like EMM’s other global workers, participants experienced discipleship, culture, and language training in preparation for the trip. The choir’s mission is to train children and youths to glorify Jesus Christ through excellent choral singing. MCCL’s five different groups - one of which is the Chamber Choir - have a total of approximately 170 members representing 75 congregations from 17 denominations. A program of Lancaster Mennonite School, MCCL also includes students from 53 schools, as well as homeschooled students.

A major part of the Mom’s House program is the free state-accredited Keystone Star 3 early learning center for children age 6 weeks through preschool age whose parents are Mom’s House participants. “All of our kids leave our program kindergarten ready, or they are set up with an Individualized Education Program,” Johns said, noting that a variety of therapists provide services to children at Mom’s House as needed. Currently, 20 children and 14 parents are active Mom’s House clients. At least a dozen families are on the waiting list. The program, which has been in existence for 28 years, has recently mushroomed. “We have tripled in terms of staff and doubled in terms of children in the last two years,” said gala committee chair Dan Massey.

Colombian-born artist Yesid Gomez will present live performance art at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Friday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. in Steinman Hall as part of the We the People First Fridays Initiative. The free event will allow audience members to witness Gomez’s unique combination of movement, music and imagery to create an intricate work of art. Gomez, a contemporary visual artist, draws upon years of formal education that started at age 14 in his native Colombia at Medellin city’s Instituto de Bellas Artes (Beaux-Arts), where he received his certification as a leading painter. His work draws on a philosophical concept that transforms a range of colors and surreal poetic shapes into real movements, forming a colorfully styled mix of metaphors and lifelike compositions. In addition to Gomez’s live performance, the First Friday event will also feature Gomez’s exhibit “Miserable� on display in the Regitz Gallery. The exhibit will be open for viewing and purchasing daily during business hours from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. and during First Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibit will be showcased until Friday, Sept. 28. Professional fees are covered by Building Bridges Foundation’s Mission Action Plan and the annual budget. CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health and the Library System of Lancaster County will present the third annual Brush Twice-A-Day Challenge, a free educational program designed to encourage children to create and maintain healthy oral hygiene habits.
