Arts and Culture Season Announced Lancaster Bible College (LBC) and The Trust Performing Arts Center will offer a variety of events during the 2025-26 Arts and Culture season. GOTR teams typically practice twice a week for 10 weeks, and the season will culminate with a celebratory 5K on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 2:30 p.m. at Millersville University’s Pucillo Field. “By participating in Girls on the Run Lancaster-Lebanon programs, girls learn to raise the bar, to use their voices for positive and effective change, to become empowered leaders over their lives, as well as in their communities, and to simply be the best version of their already extraordinary selves,” West said. Girls on the Run Lancaster-Lebanon was founded in 2009. “A friend (Carrie Johnson) and I got together, and she said, ‘This thing called Girls on the Run looks fantastic,’” said West. “‘It’s an empowerment program for girls in third through eighth g rades. We talk about self-esteem being the best version of yourself that you can be, standing up for yourself and others, and character development.’ At the time, we both had girls in third and fifth grade, and it was fantastic.” The first team consisted of 25 girls in Hempfield and now GOTR teams are in every single school district

It’s absolutely amazing to see the support from donors and sponsors but also from the families that trust us enough to allow us to spend this time with their daughters. It’s just absolutely unbelievable.” GOTR is for girls of every ability. “ You don’t have to run to be in the program,” said West. “That is a common misconception because we’re called Girls on the Run, but it’s really about moving forward. We say you can hop, roll, skip, or jump your way to the finish line.” West noted that the program offers an ideal time to bond with teammates. “The girls will talk about everything from being a good friend to stopping and take a breather before you respond to texts and social media,” she said. “We talk about peer pressure and how can you be the best friend and what qualities do you look for in a friend. It’s so much fun for the girls and it really does introduce them to a lifelong love of being physically active. When you are walking or jogging or running side by side with somebody and you’re having conversations and being silly and having a good time, you’re not thinking about whether you’re jogging or walking.” There are approximately 600 volunteer coaches a year. “We can’t run the program without volunteers,” said West. “One of our big-

We want to make sure they’re equipped with everything they need to serve the girls the best they can.” Each GOTR athlete will compete with a buddy in the season-ending 5K. The buddy must register for the race and be 16 years old or older. “The buddies are there to keep encouraging them to go at their pace,” said West. “It can be a family friend, it can be a teacher, it can be a neighbor.” GOTR is also seeking volunteers for the 5K. “We need hundreds of volunteers to be in cheer zones and people to make it fun and help keep it safe,” said West.

It’s children playing in a museum.” In a very specific way, Ready, Set, Success is a new take on what Hands-on House, Children’s Museum of L ancaster, which is located at 721 L andis Valley Road, Lancaster, has been doing for nearly 40 years. Ready, Set, Success is designed for children between the ages of 2 and 6. Beginning in September, Ready, Set, Success will be presented to the community on an introductory basis. Parents and children will be afforded opportunities to participate in the museum’s Story Stretchers interactive class on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., art classes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:45 a.m. and 1 p.m., and STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) Explorers on Thursdays at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Ready, Set, Success will also feature guest experts each week. Additionally, participants will also be directed to the dozens of Hands-on House indoor and outdoor exhibits and stations for further exploration. Hands-on House, Children’s Museum of Lancaster is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There are entrance fees associated with admission, and memberships are available.
“(Ready, Set, Success) aligns with our focus of foster ing development of young children in our community,” said Ackerman, who possesses a background as an educator and as a school administrator. “It helps young children get used to the atmosphere they’re about to go into. The goal is to help them foster curiosity and wonder. We do it with intentionality to encourage children to see new things, embrace trial and error and make adjustments. Play, in particular, is a ver y powerful tool that can be used to get ready for school. This is truly immersive play, and it allows kids to be actively engaged in learning.” The current plan calls for Ready, Set, Success to expand the width and depth of its experiential offerings in Januar y of 2026. “My absolute favorite t h i n g i s w a tc h i n g t h e adults light up when they see their children progressing,” said Ackerman. “You don’t have to police them. It starts to click for the parent and the child. When a parent can step back and witness the development pro gress, it ’s awesome. K ids are programmed to develop.” Some of the children’s programs that the Hands-on House offers include Discovery to Go, Summer Camps, Sensory Friendly Sundays, Touch-A-
Truck, and Winter Camps. The children’s museum also provides opportunities for Scouts to earn badges and for groups to host events like birthday parties. “ T here ’s really great research that shows children who regularly attend museums score higher in third-grade achievement te s t s t h a n t h o s e w h o don’t,” said Ackerman. “Kids are given an opportunity to play, to be bored and to play with each other. Having spaces where kids can experience their fun is a big part of our work. What we see developmentally is children’s worlds get broader as they grow. As they expand to different environments, their sense of self and world expands.” Hands-on House was established in 1987 by community members with the help of the Junior League of Lancaster. “It was a community effort to build this museum for children,” said Ackerman. “It has been designed to foster the development of our younger visitors, and it’s intentional. We want to be a community hub that’s accessible for all families. We have to be intentional in car ving out time for kids to play. Part of what we’re doing is what we’ve been doing all along. He has also played tennis, baseball, football, and has boxed. Johnny plans to compete on the L-S track and field team. Of all the sports, basketball is a clear favorite. “He was walking before he turned 1 and playing on a mini basket,” Jade said. “He was trying to dunk it. It was just something that he’s loved forever.” Johnny is hoping to contribute to the Pioneers’ high school program this winter and hopes to play basketball in college. W hen he ’s no t on a basketball court, Johnny enjoys volunteering with local food banks.
