The theme of the performance is a tribute to the country’s 250th anniversary, called “American Faces: A Star-Spangled Spectacular.” The show will start with what Royer referred to as the most recognizable tune in the set - the theme from the movie “Top Gun.” “Then we’ll go into some music See Marching pg 5

Beginning Sept. 2, 2026, you may notice some changes in how your weekly community newspaper is delivered as we continue evolving our distribution methods to serve our communities effectively and responsibly. Like many businesses, we continue to face rising postage costs and other changing expenses associated with producing and delivering our publications. To ensure we can continue providing our communities with the local news and information they value, we have made several thoughtful business decisions regarding how our newspapers are distributed. These changes will help us operate more efficiently while maintaining our longstanding commitment to the communities we serve. Depending on your location, your newspaper may continue to arrive by mail or may be delivered directly to your driveway, but in some cases home delivery may be reduced or no longer available. Please note that our delivery drivers are not permitted to place newspapers in or access your mailbox. If your household is designated for carrier delivery, your newspaper will be delivered outside of the mailbox. Because these deliver y changes will not take effect until Sept. 2, we kindly ask that you wait until that date to contact our office with any questions or concerns regarding your delivery. Program to Explore Flax Processing
DELIVERY UPDATES
Lancaster Area Sewing Network (L A SN) will present “Processing Flax” on Monday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. at Lancaster Friends Quaker Meeting , 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster. Cloth, and the thread with which to sew it, all begin as fiber. Today’s fabrics come from a wealth of fibers, many of which are synthetic, but before the 20th century, sewing thread and fabric were made of natural fibers and could even be homemade. Flax was the typical fiber Lancaster County families used to make their own sewing thread and cloth. Flax comes from a plant that was once a commonly grown crop in Pennsylvania.

Marching from pg 1 that represents time periods,” he said, beginning with “Chorale and Shaker Dance.” Next, the band will perform Samuel Barber’s “Adagio.” “That’s sort of a hymn to the fallen, a more reverent piece,” said Royer. “Then we’re going to go into a swing tune, jazz tune called ‘Swing, Swing, Swing.’ This is the one that I’m probably most excited about because it’s from our 2020 field show which nobody got to see (because of COVID-19). The only people that saw it were parents and some football parents, and that was a really fun tune. We want to bring that back. We’ll finish the show with portions of a piece called “American Faces” with a big statement of the doxology. That little statement just brings it all together.” Royer explained, “Back in the first Continental Congress in Philadelphia, there’s a chair at the front and center of (Independence Hall), down in the historic village. It’s got a half of a sun carved into it, maybe painted into it.
And the story goes that Ben Franklin sat in the hall and looked at that chair, and he said out loud, ‘The question is, is that a rising sun or a setting sun? Is this the beginning of our nation that’s going to be great, or was this just a grand experiment that’s going to fail?’ And, of course, now we can see that it was a rising sun, and we hope for more. That’s going to be sort of a tying point to the whole production.” When coming up with a theme and a playlist, Royer considers the specialties of that year’s band members. “Ever yone is accountable, and it takes everyone to do it,” he said. “We definitely do look at if we have a student that can handle this solo, or do we have a really strong dr um section that can do this swing tune? Can the color guard pull off a swing dance-type thing? We definitely do look at what we have or who we have. … We have strength in every section, and then I think it’s important to
push cer tain kids in a direction, push them a little bit beyond what they think they can do.” In addition to playing at all Pioneers’ football games, the band will display its skills at several festivals during the fall. L-S is a member of the Pennsylvania Marching Band Coalition (PAMBC), which includes many b a n d s f ro m L a n c a s te r County and some from Chester and Berks counties. There will be two big finale shows this year, with L -S performing at McCaskey on Halloween. Before that, L - S will par ticipate in festivals at Lancaster Catholic on Saturday, Sept. 19, and at Owen J. Roberts on Saturday, Oct. 3. PA MBC fest ivals are considered noncompetitive, and no trophies will be awarded. That doesn’t mean L-S plans to phone it in. “There’s obviously great importance to put on a good show,” said Royer. “There’s going to be a lot of people there watching. That’s the neat

thing about the coalitions, because all the students and the fans are in on the home side enjoying everyone’s performances,” Royer said. “In a competitive setting, you’re sitting out there in front of your parents and all the other kids from other schools are rooting for you to mess up. T here ’s a place for competition, and that’s not wrong. It’s just we’ve chosen to take a different route.” The L-S Marching Band will hold its annual fundraiser Tag Day from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 29. Students go out in the community to speak with residents and seek donations. “ The community really supports us ver y well,” Royer said.

prevent certain diseases. Most people who participate really want to advance research, more than help themselves. Obviously, preventing a heart attack is better than treating one.” The Gene Health Project is an immense undertaking that involves multiple health care systems from all over the nation. The study collects samples of individuals’ genetics, stores the data and examines it. From those examinations, the study can predict an individual’s likelihood for certain illnesses and diseases. In six to eight weeks, participants are notified of the results of their studied samples. But the project needs samples to study. Interested individuals over the age of 18 can request blood draws or saliva kits through their Wellspan Health internet portals or by visiting the health care system’s website at www .wellspan.org. There are no costs involved with participating. WellSpan Health operates 12 hospitals and more than 250 patient care facili-
Local Crafters’ Sale Planned The Strasburg Heritage Society will hold its annual Local Crafters’ Sale on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will take place at First Presbyterian Church, 101 S. ties in central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland, including locations in Ephrata, Lebanon, Mount Gretna and York. “It’s a very large research project, and we will be collecting an enormous amount of data,” said Dr. Kann. “We’re also working with 15 to 20 hospital systems across the country. Soon we will have the largest data bank in the world. People who participate can learn some of the characteristics about themselves. The benefit to volunteers is that they learn about these problems and then they’re in position to prevent serious problems. “If volunteers have a family history of any problems, we can tell them their risks for those problems,” added Dr. Kann. “We store all of this data digitally. If
a question ever comes up in the future, we just have to ask the computer for the details.” The Gene Health Project was initiated three years ago, and to this point the study has collected more than 6,000 genetic samples from volunteers. The goal for the project is to collect another 4,000 samples, but the research won’t stop there. “After that, the hope is to continue the project,” said Dr. Kann. “We’ve already probably saved 1,000 lives and made 1,000 diagnoses. It’s the most remarkable way to do precision medicine. “Each of us has 23,000 genes,” continued Dr. Kann. “These genes are responsible for making proteins, and these proteins make us who we are. Basically, they make us who we are and allow us to be able to survive in most environments.” Spreading the word is one of the biggest challenges currently being faced by the Gene Health Project. Like any research, the bigger the sample size, the more accurate the findings. “The more you spread it, the more you’re able to help people,” said Dr. Kann. “I would encourage people to sign up for the Gene Health Project and see what you can learn about yourself. It’s just a win, win, win. “Up until now, health care systems have been mostly reactive,” concluded Dr. Kann. “Now we’re putting a lot of effort into who’s going to get sick and how they’re going to get sick.”
