L-S Marching Band Prepares For New Season, Tag Day For decades, the members of the Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School marching band have canvassed the Lampeter-Strasburg School District on a hot Saturday in August to collect donations to support the organization through “Tag Day.” The marching band program has won state championships and, more recently, pioneered a noncompetitive coalition of Lancaster County bands that brings thousands of students together to support each other at festivals each fall. As with everything else this year, however, how the band achieves its goals will look a little different, but the crux of the program remains the same: The band will present a complete, fullscale program of music, marching, and visual flair. This fall’s show is titled “V Is for Victory” and commemorates the 75th anniversary of the end of
World War II with music from Beethoven and John Williams, along with some jazz. “With so much changing, we are excited to provide a source of normalcy for our students,” said band director Larry Royer, who is beginning his 27th season at the helm of a marching band and his 18th at L-S. “The kids have responded incredibly well to the safety precautions we have put in place, and I can’t wait for the community to see what they have been working on through the summer.” The marching band’s performance schedule for the fall remains up in the air, but the band has been experimenting with livestreaming technology to make its music accessible to all. “One of the things I have always appreciated about this community is that it shows up to support music in

year, and this year is no different.” Tag Day will be observed on Saturday, Aug. 29, but with a slight change. Instead of knocking on the doors of L-S
residents to introduce themselves, band members will instead place postcards and envelopes at each house. The postcards will feature photos of band See L-S Marching Band pg 3

The Bird-in-Hand Stage, 2760 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand, has several years of presenting live entertainment, including local performers interspersed with original Blue Gate Musicals shows focused on the Plain community. Starting in 2016, Brett and Labrina Myers provided shows for Bird-in-Hand before preparing to open their own Magic and Wonder Theater, 3065 Lincoln Highway, Paradise. Bird-in-Hand’s 2020 season was slated to start on April 2. Magic and Wonder’s first show ever in the venue, “Worlds of Wonder,” was planned to launch on April 8. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, however, neither theater opened in April, but Magic and Wonder opened on July 20, and Bird-in-Hand is holding two shows starting

A year ago, Jenn Knepper, founder of the Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair, was looking forward to moving the fair from its location at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster to The Junction Center in Manheim. This year, Knepper is talking about the online fair that the organization will hold on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During that time period, those wishing to give an alternative gift may visit www.giftsthatgivehope.org and choose an organization to donate to. “You’re purchasing a gift for somebody, and we will send you a card with a description of the gift you purchased,” said Knepper, who added that the fair is the perfect vehicle to find a meaningful gift, especially for those who do not need anything in particular.
