Railroad Museum events will highlight model train displays

TheRailroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will hold its Model Railroading Days event from Friday, Aug. 18,through Sunday, Aug. 20. Admission for the event will be included in the museum’s regular admission, and attendees will be able to explore a variety of displays from multiple model train organizations.

A Middle Division layout, which is based on the Pennsylvania Railroad in the Harrisburg area, will be set up in the second-floor gallery. The Pennsylvania Landscapes layout will be displayed in Stewart Junction. Both layouts have been crafted by the museum’s volunteers. On Saturday, Aug. 19, a tree-making demonstration for

model train displays will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and it will be included in the museum’s standard admission cost.

On Sunday, Oct. 1, the Railroad Museum will hold its 16th annual Garden Railways Tour from 1 to 5 p.m. The selfguided tour will include five stops across Wrightsville, Lancaster, Lititz and Manheim, and each stop will feature a model train display that is incorporated into a yard or garden. After purchasing a ticket, participants will receive the list of stops on the route, and they may choose which locations to visit for their tour. Tickets may be purchased by visiting the museum’s store during its regular hours or by visiting https://tinyurl.com/gardenrail waystour. Children age 5 and under will be admitted at no cost.

Covered Bridge Classic celebrates the joy of riding

The Lancaster Bicycle Club exists to promote the sport of bicycling, advocate for the safety of riders and provide members with cycling opportunities. Few events exemplify that mission better than the Covered Bridge Classic.

On Sunday, Aug. 20, the 400member Lancaster Bicycle Club will stage the 44th edition of its annual Covered Bridge Classic at seven start/finish points across northern Lancaster County. Some 1,300 bicycling enthusiasts from points

all along the East Coast will descend upon the county to celebrate the fellowship inspired by cycling.

The event is being presented as a ride, not a competition.

“The purpose is to draw in cyclists,” said Leslie Arnold, communications director for the Lancaster Bicycle Club. “It’s to offer a huge cycling event to the community. It’s an eclectic mix. Some are very serious cyclists. Some people do it because they are challenged by friends. Some make it part of their vacations. People want to see the covered bridges.

While many people know that the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is a social club and a veterans’ service organization, the community may not realize that the VFW also supports local charities and provides activities that are open to the public.

Locally, Gap VFW Post 7418 offers weekly specials in its kitchen, karaoke and free family bingo. The post includes a canteen, pool tables, an outdoor eating area and a downstairs meeting room. The property, situated on approximately 10 acres, also offers

The Garden Railways Tour will feature a variety of outdoor model train displays. Members of the Gap VFW include (back, from left) cook Chris Leivers Jr., quartermaster Bob Charlesen, adjutant Lee Reynolds, (front) trustee Scott Barrage, chaplain Herb Buzzard, steward Lucinda Fisher and auxiliary president Cheryl Charlesen.

an outdoor picnic grove and pavilion that the public may rent and a ball field.

The VFW offers membership to veterans, as well as social memberships. VFW members are veterans who have honorably served overseas in an area of foreign conflict. Those who are not eligible for VFW membership but are the parent, grandparent, spouse, sibling, child or grandchild of a qualifying veteran can apply for membership in the VFW Auxiliary.

“The post has approximately 123 regular members, which are people who served in conflict,” explained Lucinda Fisher, the steward of Post 7418, noting that members include Vietnam and Korean War veterans.

The post’s primary goal is to help veterans in need. Most recently, veterans were invited to the post to learn about their Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits during a program held in July.

“When a veteran needs help, they come to us. We can either give them help ourselves or we can steer them to where they can get the help,” said quartermaster Bob Charlesen.

The post supports local fire companies and other veterans’ organizations, and it participates in Wreaths Across America. In June, the post held a fundraiser to benefit Woerth it Hollow, which provides equineassisted therapy to veterans and people with disabilities.

Seasonal activities are also offered. “This is a familyfriendly (post),” said Charlesen. “You can bring your children. We have Christmas parties for the kids, Halloween parties and Easter egg hunts, and you don’t have to be a member to come to those.”

“You don’t have to be a member for any of our food specials. You do have to be a member to purchase alcohol,”

Fisher added.

Currently, the Gap VFW is looking to add new members. “COVID hurt us. We shut down and it’s been a struggle to bounce back,” said Fisher, noting that the post was able to make several building improvements during the shutdown, including the addition of new flooring.

Those interested in joining the post are asked to complete a membership application. “If they don’t have a sponsor, we will find one for them,” Fisher

said. “We definitely need younger veterans (to join).”

Charlesen recently set up an informational table at Strasburg Community Days to encourage membership. “Most people that came over were shocked to hear that they could join a VFW club,” he stated.

The Gap VFW Post is located at 4988 Lincoln Highway East, Kinzers. For more information, including details about upcoming events and food specials, visit www.face book.com/vfwgap.

Virtual workshop will teach tree pruning

Penn State Extension will offer a virtual workshop on how to correctly prune trees.

“Why We Should Be Making Small Pruning Cuts” will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 29, from noon to 1 p.m.

Branch failure can be caused by wind, ice, snow or a climber aloft. Such breakage can result in costly property damage, personal injury, power outages or blocked roads.

During the upcoming workshop, attendees will learn how tree branches deal with loading throughout the tree structure. There will also be a discussion on the biology around why small cuts are better than larger cuts and the impacts of decay on wound closure after pruning.

The program is designed to benefit municipal managers, foresters and arborists, as well as others interested in urban and community forestry.

The webinar is free, but a fee may be associated with the following credits: Society of American Foresters (CFE), pending approval; International Society of Arboriculture; Certificate of Attendance for Professionals and Others to Self-Report; and Peer Volunteer/Master Gardener Update Training.

The program is being presented by the Penn State Extension in partnership

St.

with the U.S. Forest Service, State and Private Forestry; Pennsylvania DCNR, Bureau of Forestry; and Pennsylvania TreeVitalize Program, Pennsylvania Community Trees.

To register, visit https:// extension.psu.edu/education -format/webinars and search for “Why We Should Be Making Small Pruning Cuts.”

Covered Bridge Classic

That’s what draws people.”

From the seven start/finish points, participants are treated to rides of various length - 35, 50, 65 or 100 miles - through the Lancaster County countryside in the areas of Warwick Township, Ephrata, Manheim, Stevens and Hempfield. The 100-mile trek incorporates 14 of Lancaster County’s covered bridges into its journey.

All of the routes include rest stops, some of which feature mechanical support, parking and refreshments.

“Lancaster is not flat,” said Arnold. “There aren’t steep, steep climbs, but we

have climbs that are going to push you. The shortest course has the least amount of climbs, and the longest course has the most amount of climbs.”

The Covered Bridge Classic also serves as a fundraiser. From its participation, the Lancaster Bicycle Club is hoping to raise more than $10,000, some of which will be put back into the club, some of which will be funneled into community causes related to bicycling and some of which will go toward the maintenance of the covered bridges.

Since 1999, the Lancaster Bicycle Club has awarded

Bus trip to offer singing opportunity

$545,000 in grants mainly funded through the Covered Bridge Classic.

“It’s a huge way to give back to the community,” said Arnold. “The Lancaster Bike Club is all about advocating for cycling safety. We have social events throughout the year. We have different things for everybody, different types of rides for all levels of riders. Throughout the year, there’s always an effort to schedule a ride every weekend.”

In addition to its relaxed rides, the Lancaster Bicycle Club also organizes two other more formal ridesthe Three Creek Century

and the Chocolate Tour.

The Lancaster Bicycle Club was formed in 1973, and six years later it presented its inaugural Covered Bridge Classic.

“Over the years, we’ve evolved,” said Arnold. “More people came in, and we became bigger and more complex. At one point, we had 600 members. It’s a pastime you can do, and there’s also more serious riders. The club has evolved to reflect the needs of the membership.”

The Railroad Museum first introduced the annual Garden Railways Tour after learning about the practice from museum volunteer John Bowman. Bowman is heavily involved in the garden railway community and continues to connect the museum with model train enthusiasts who have garden displays throughout York and Lancaster counties.

“I think the appeal is the scale; garden railways are the largest model train displays,” said Elizabeth Myers, program coordinator at the Railroad Museum. “Many people associate model train displays with basements and small rooms, but this combines the hobby with nature

frompg 1

and being outside.”

Not only are garden railways located outdoors, but they also often integrate a mix of elements that can be found in nature, such as branches, flowers and stones. When setting up the displays, garden railway enthusiasts often place pieces made of plastic and metal alongside the natural elements to create a realistic model of real scenic train routes. The outdoor setting also allows the displays’ creators to utilize landscaping to customize their constructions. “It’s a really fun way to get outside in the early fall and enjoy a family-friendly activity,” Myers said. national movement. Each level of the Bicycle Friendly Community award provides a clear path for cities and towns to continuously improve.

One of the significant endeavors contributing to this certification is the expansion of the Bike It Lancaster bike share program. With five more bike stations and 25 additional bikes strategically placed throughout the city, locals and visitors can now enjoy greater access to a fleet of 50 brand new bicycles, making it easier than ever to explore Lancaster city on two wheels.

With the implementation of new bike lanes, improved signage and the expanded bike share program, the city of Lancaster continues to prioritize the safety of all cyclists. These efforts are aligned with the city’s strategic priority of creating a safe and accessible city for all, as well as the Vision Zero initiative to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries in the transportation system.

For more information about the City of Lancaster’s bicyclefriendly initiatives and the Bike It Lancaster program, visit www.bikeitlancaster.com.
