As Hospice & Community Care (HCC) donor relations manager Coco Minardi reviewed the items pulled for a photo to advertise the 35th annual Labor Day Auction set for Saturday, Aug. 31, and Monday, Sept. 2, she laughed. “An autographed football, a life-size NASCAR poster, a quilt, and a mailbox: That’s the randomness of the auction right there.” Indeed, at first glance it might seem like the epic two-day sale is full of a jumble of items every year, but it is all very deliberate. The things that have been donated to the auction are grouped by type, such as plants, quilts, sports memorabilia, used cars, and artwork. This year, the event will feature a tool auction for the first time.

Members of the Strasburg Senior Citizens group will hold a meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 21, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Strasburg Fire Hall, 203 W. Franklin St., Strasburg. Entertainment will be Eric Kearns: Voices of Legends. The Strasburg Senior Citizens group welcomes new members from Strasburg as well as from Lancaster city and Lancaster County. The club offers fellowship, musical entertainment, an annual picnic, a Christmas banquet, bus tours, bingo, refreshments, and more. Visitors are welcome.Call Bill at 717-687-9072. DISCUSSION GROUP

After hijacked airplanes impacted the two towers of the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, triggering their collapse, the nation vowed to

never forget the lives lost in that tragedy. A decade later, Lancaster-area firefighter Scott Yuill felt he needed to do something to make sure the 343 firefighters who died during rescue attempts continued to be remembered. See 9/11 Stair Climb pg 4

The Lancaster Memorial Stair Climb committee, including (from left) chair Scott Yuill and Joyce and Frank Mokros, has organized the ninth annual 9/11 memorial event at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium on Sept. 8.

Faith Church Community Picnic Will Offer Food, Entertainment By Ann Mead Ash

When Becky Naughton and Kim Sinopoli sat down with other members of the Faith Evangelical Congregational Church’s fellowship team to brainstorm events, Sinopoli had an idea. “We were trying to think of different ways to bring (church members) together, but also to include people from the community because we have a lot of room for growth,” said Sinopoli. “Food and fellowship go together. I know communities as a whole will always enjoy some food and entertainment.” See Community Picnic pg 4

Working to organize the Faith Evangelical Congregational Church picnic on Aug. 24 are (from left) Becky Naughton, Kristen Hershey, and Kim Sinopoli. The community is invited to the event, which will feature children’s games, food, and entertainment.

The Lancaster Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America has planned its annual picnic for Saturday, Aug. 31, at Waltz Vineyards in Manheim. A social hour will begin at 11 a.m., and the meal will start being served at noon. All current and past military officers are invited, and reservations are required. Interested military officers should contact Jim Cunningham at 717-581-5299 or jetpilot37@comcast.net to confirm reservation by Monday, Aug. 26. More information may be found at www.moaalancasterchapt.org.

“We work with the Amish community, and they do all of our food, which brought in $80,000 last year, but not many Amish people attend the auction,” Minardi explained. In an effort to appeal to more Amish folks, the auction committee asked for advice, and “add tools” was the resounding response. “We called local construction companies, and hospice families have been cleaning out their sheds,” Minardi said. Decommissioned commercial-grade tools and equipment, as well as household tools, have been donated for the auction, and they will be sold to the highest bidders on Aug. 31 from 9 a.m. to noon in the second half of the plant building. “We’re hoping we strike a chord with people who are do-it-yourselfers or Amish,” Minardi remarked.
