Garden Club Members Create, Grow and Nurture

Good’s Store in Quarryville, 333 W. 4th St., has moved into its new addition. This move completes the first phase of a multi-year expansion project. The new addition has about 24,000 square feet of space, roughly the same as the existing store. The addition, completed on July 22, has a new entrance with a carport and improved lighting and flooring in the retail space, said Dan Zimmerman, marketing manager for Good’s Store, Inc. The second and final phase, which will begin in August, will involve the demolition of the existing store and rebuilding it to connect to the new addition. This phase should be complete at some point

Kathy Heil thoroughly enjoys gardening; she likes spending time alone with her perennials that thrive in the garden outside of her home. But Heil also enjoys sharing her gardening passion with others.

A resident of Manheim Township, Heil is the president of the Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County.

“It’s therapy and enjoyment,” said Heil. “I enjoy seeing if the birds come, and the insects and all the natural habitat. We also have a patio in the backyard, and we enjoy sharing our meals outside. We also have a water feature to go with the garden.”

There’s something calming and medicinal associated with humans physically connecting with an Earth that sustains them. Gardening also has a way of triggering our nurturing mechanisms.

“I just like getting my hands in the dirt,” said Heil. “I’ve pretty much always been a gardener. I come from a farming family. I’ve always had an inclination to do some gardening.”

Many of the same feelings Heil has about gardening she shares with the other 50 dues-paying members of the garden club.

That bond possesses the power to inspire strong friendships and uplifting camaraderie. “ T hey ’re women from all kinds of backgrounds,” said Heil.

“That’s what makes it very interesting. You learn about all these pursuits people have.

“We share our pursuit of gardening interests,” she added.

Visitors should bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. If there is inclement weather, the concert will be held at the Strasburg Fire Company station, 203 Franklin St. The concert has been sponsored by the Strasburg Lions Club since 2014. Prior to 2014, the get-together was sponsored by the Strasburg VFW and organized

by the late Donald A. Bachman.

“When Donnie passed away, the Lions Club thought it would be a good idea to continue having the concerts,” said Bruce Ryder, a member of the Lions Club who organizes the event.

For one day, Columbia’s Janson Field will transform into a living museum, bringing the sights, sounds and r ules of baseball’s earliest days back to life.

On Saturday, Aug. 15, two vintage clubs will compete in a free doubleheader of 1864-style “base ball” (the original two-word spelling), a version of the game played by more than 400 teams across the country.

The games will begin at 11 a.m. at the park, 650 Cherry St. The event is possible thanks to the support of the Columbia Lions Club as part of the borough’s

The matchup will pit the Keystone Club of Harrisburg against the Mechanicsburg Zouaves. B oth teams recently competed with a total of 26 clubs in the Gettysburg National 19th Century Base Ball Festival, held July 18 and 19.

Even the names of the teams are based in history, said Rich Heinick, who was a founding member of the Keystones when the team formed more than a decade ago.

“Both clubs have borrowed their names from actual teams that played in those towns during the 1860s and 1870s,” he explained. “The Zouaves were re-formed recently, and this will be their inaugural game. There will be extra uniforms available if anyone would like to try their hand at 1864 base ball.”

More than one sports historian has described this vintage sport as “a Civil War re-enactment with real bullets.”

The game will look familiar to today’s fans, except for two notable differences: Players compete without gloves, since they were not widely used until the early 1880s, and a ball caught after one hop - known as “on the bound” - counts as an out.

“The bound rule changes the way everyone hits, runs and positions themselves on defense,” Heinick said.

“It seems a little strange at first, but you can see how this made sense in the early days of the sport. After several years of debate, the rule was amended in 1865 to make the game more challenging. Even so, our players try to catch what See Base Ball pg 6

“It’s something pleasant for folks to do,” said Ryder.

“Come out and be entertained and recognized for their service. Everybody (who) comes has a good time.”

The 40-member band, celebrating its 34th anniversary, plays at a variety of local venues throughout the year, Ryder said. Boots is a graduate of Millersville University and is a former music educator in the Cocalico School District.

The club supports VisionCorps (formerly known as the Susquehanna Association for the Vision Impaired), which provides job training and employment opportunities so that people who are blind or vision impaired can attain independence.

The club collects used eyeg lasses, which are cleaned and provided to needy individuals in the third world, and supports Beacon Lodge Camp, which provides summer camp experiences to blind and other special needs individuals.

DMVA Available to Assist With Locating Forms T he Pe n n s y l va n i a Department of Military a n d Ve te ra n s A f f a i r s (DMVA) is available to provide assistance to veterans who have lost their DD Form 214 (DD-214), DD Form 215 (DD-215) or other military documents.

DMVA may be able to help veterans locate these documents so they can get credit for time served and receive benefits they have earned.

The DD-214 is a Department of Defense document issued upon a service member’s retirement, separation, or discharge from active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces. It contains information needed to verify military service for benefits, retirement, employment, and membership in veterans’ organizations. Without this document, there could be significant delays when a veteran seeks benefits earned through his or her military service. The DD-215 is used to correct

errors or make additions to a DD-214.

Sites Needed for Air Quality Sensors The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group PurpleAir Monitoring Initiative, which is placing air quality sensors throughout Lancaster County, is seeking volunteers to host additional air-sensing devices that it plans to purchase with a $2,600 Conservation Grant from the Sierra Club’s Pennsylvania Chapter.

PurpleAir is a hyper-local air quality monitoring network that transmits data through a Wi-Fi connection to a real-time, public access map. While not as robust as government-regulated sensors like the two currently in Lancaster County, PurpleAir ’s sensors are considered fairly accurate for particulate matter, and they serve as a supplement to the government-regulated sensors.

Areas in L ancaster County without the Lancaster Group’s PurpleAir sensors include Columbia, Conestoga, Drumore, East Petersburg, Gap, Intercourse, Landisville, Leola, Lititz, Marietta, Millersville, Mount Joy, Paradise, Quarryville, Washington Borough, and Willow Street. People residing in these locales who are interested in hosting one of the devices may email sierra clubevent@gmail.com and ask for an application, which covers the requirements for becoming a monitor host.

Other areas of the county with existing or proposed future sources of air pollution will also be considered.

When positioning of the additional PurpleAir sensors is complete, the Lancaster

United Way Awards Scholarships United Way of Lancaster County recently awarded more than $102,875 in Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Pre-K Scholarships. The scholarships are intended to help children and families across Lancaster County.

Assessing Lancaster County’s air quality became a goal of the Lancaster Group as a result of the American Lung Association’s annual surveys, which consistently give the county low marks for shortterm particle pollution. Manufacturers’ Association Announces Expansion T he Manufacturers ’ Association has announced an investment by BAE Systems to help expand the organization’s Automation Training Center, a new 5,000-square-foot stateof-the-art training facility dedicated to automation, robotics, and mechatronics training in support of the defense industrial base and regional manufacturing sector.

The newly named BAE Systems Automation Training Center is an expansion of the Manufacturers’ A ssociation’s existing 20,000-square-foot training center and was made possible in part through the support of BAE Systems, which helped underwrite the development of the facility. The center will provide hands-on train-

ing and apprenticeship opportunities designed to upskill workers in the high-demand fields of automation, robotics, and mechatronics.

The BAE Systems Automation Training Center will be a key component of TIDE, the Technology Innovation Defense E co s y s te m , a ce n t ra l Pennsylvania initiative of the region’s defense manufacturing community, designated by the Department of War. TIDE was also awarded a $6.1 million grant in 2023 through the U.S. Department of War’s Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to train and upskill the defense manufacturing workforce across the region.

The club periodically hosts open houses and embarks on regular field trips. Its meetings feature presentations from gardening experts and an Americanized informal tea that includes coffee and appetizers in addition to tea.

Nine subcommittees support the structure and work of the club.

“Being we meet once a month, it’s always great to get together,” said Heil. “We try to get everyone involved.

CAP Squadron Relocates T h e C i v i l A i r Pa t ro l (CAP) Jesse Jones Composite Squadron has announced that it will relocate to Alliance Aviation within the terminal of the Lancaster Airport in L i t i tz b e g inning in August. The squadron’s meetings will be held on Mondays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., which represents a change from the previous schedule.

The new location will provide a larger meeting space as well as a professional environment for cadet and senior member development. It will suppor t all three of C AP’s chartered missions: cadet programs, emergenc y ser vices, and aerospace education.

Cadet programs include leadership development, physical fitness, and character development for youths ages 12 to 18. Emergency services include training for search and rescue, disaster relief, communications, and also mission support training for qualified members. Aerospace education includes STEM instruction, learning about aviation, and an aerospace curriculum for cadets and senior members. C AP also provides additional oppor tunities, such as flight training, encampments, and national special activities.

The relocation was made possible through the continued support and partnership of airport manager Ed Foster. The squadron remains committed to serving Lancaster County throu g h volunte er ing , youth development, and mission readiness.

Lancaster Conservancy naturalist Keith Williams will speak about the biology and ecology of moths, which are diverse insects and are well adapted to avoid predation and find love in the dark. A moth lighting will follow the presentation. A moth lighting, also called a mothing or light-sheeting, is an activity where an artificial light source is used to attract moths and other nighttime insects to a white sheet, allowing for individuals to look at the specimens up close.

Williams is a naturalist, educator, writer, and photographer. He has a Bachelor of Science in environmental biology from Kutztown University and a Master of Science in ecological teaching and learning
