Striving for student success

Lampeter-Strasburg High School

(LSHS) principal Benjamin

Feeney was recently elected to serve a three-year term on the board of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). The position follows a long list of roles that Feeney has played in the world of education, from teaching social studies to meeting with government officials to advocate for students and teachers across the country. Feeney will begin his term in August, and he will continue to serve as LSHS’ principal as he works with NASSP over the next few years.

Feeney started his career as a social studies teacher at Conestoga Valley High School, where he worked for seven years. In 2014, he became the assistant principal at LSHS, a role that he filled until he

became the principal in 2016. This year marks not only his 10th year at the high school, but also his 10th year as a member of NASSP. “I’m really looking forward to serving the board and helping it achieve its mission and vision,” Feeney said.

“We want to focus on growing the number of future school leaders and retaining them.

Those are very important pieces to our field.”

Feeney has been heavily involved in organizations like NASSP over the course of his career. He has served on the board of the PA Principals Association since 2020, and he will conclude his term by assisting with its Summit23 conference in August. Feeney also serves as the association’s representative on the Pennsylvania School Safety and Security Committee, giving him a connection to state lawmakers and Congress. As part of the committee, Feeney meets with state officials

There’s always something fresh going on with GOTR

Girls on the Run (GOTR) is always active, always evolving, always moving forward.

A national initiative designed to support the development of girls in the third through eighth grades with physical activities like running, GOTR has a mission that is seasonal in nature. On the heels of a successful spring campaign, the Lancaster chapter of GOTR is currently gearing up for its 10-week fall season, which will get underway on Monday, Sept. 11.

In addition, Girls on the Run recently assigned new positions and responsibilities to employees Jennifer West and Kylie Homan.

“While Girls on the Run has two seasons, it is a year-round effort to ensure the success of each season,” said West, GOTR’s new executive director. “As a staff, it’s our responsibility to set up our coaches for success. Then it all starts again. We’re always thinking of how we can engage the community more. We know how important it is for girls to have a safe place to land.”

Last fall, Feeney became an ambassador for NASSP’s Principal

Pipeline project. The national campaign and study addressed principal recruitment and retention across the United States, and it connected

Feeney with educators on a national level. When a seat opened on NASSP’s board, Feeney saw it as a perfect opportunity to continue

The Willow Street Fire Company, like many volunteer fire departments, is almost entirely funded by donations. Firefighters rely on the generosity of the community to cover their operational expenses such as vehicle maintenance and new equipment costs. The necessary funds are acquired in many ways, but the fire department’s primary source of income is through individual donations, which are most often received by mail.

Girls on the Run

campaign will run from Thursday, Aug. 10, through Friday, Sept. 15. The season will conclude on Sunday, Nov. 19, with GOTR’s inclusive and celebratory 5K run at Millersville University.

“My job is to ensure our program is up and running so we can serve as many girls in the county as possible,” said Homan, GOTR’s new program director. “It’s about establishing our coaches so they can facilitate the program. Running is a component of our program, not a requirement. In each of the lessons, there are physical activity or games. We are encouraging girls to keep moving, based on the ability they bring each day.”

GOTR officials hope to make their program available through every school district in Lancaster County, an initiative that will depend upon the availability of volunteer coaches. There is a cost associated with the program, and financial aid is available.

In the spring, GOTR

involved 900 Lancaster County girls, thanks in part to the time and effort committed by 380 volunteer coaches.

“Because they’re all volunteer coaches, it’s almost like starting fresh each season,” said West. “We rely on coaches coming back to coach the girls. We’re looking for positive role models to show kindness and compassion to the girls.”

“We are really focusing on reaching out to the community for coaches of all shapes, sizes and ethnicity,” added

West.

“It’s really important for the girls to look into the coaches and see themselves.
There aren’t really restrictions on who can be a coach,

West, who co-founded the Lancaster-Lebanon chapter of Girls on the Run in 2009, replaced Katie Sandoe as the program’s executive director. This past spring, GOTR served its 20,000th participant.

had been mailed in. For each donation, Doyle writes a small thank you card to return to the sender, but one particular letter caught his eye. It contained a check and a small note from West Lampeter Township resident Stacey Callahan, who explained that the money was raised by her 6-year-old son, Jameson. In her note, Stacey said that Jameson acquired the money by operating a lemonade and baked goods stand at a neighborhood yard sale.

Doyle was struck by Jameson’s generosity. He brought the note to the fire department’s treasurer and fire chief, and they decided that the young donor deserved a big thank you. “The amount given wasn’t

important; it was the fact that a kid wanted to help people with his money instead of buying toys,” Doyle said. “It’s not every day that we receive a donation from a 6-year-old.”

Doyle contacted Stacey to let her know how much the fire company appreciated the donation, and he told her that the firefighters wanted to personally thank Jameson. On June 16, members of the Willow Street Fire Company organized an apparatus parade with a procession of fire engines in front of the Callahans’ home. The firefighters made Jameson an honorary member of the company and gave him a hat and T-shirt before taking him and his father, Jim, on a ride in one of the trucks.

“I was shocked,” Stacey said. “I was so touched that they did that. All of the volunteers took time out of their schedules to make this big display, and Jameson thought it was the coolest thing.”

On the day of the parade, Stacey and Jameson made another batch of lemonade and treats to give to the firefighters. Stacey said that Jameson’s T-shirt from the fire department is his new favorite article of clothing and that he would wear it every day if he could.

Jameson was inspired to operate the stand at the yard sale after his friends organized one of their own last summer. Stacey helped him make blueberry muffins, crisped rice treats and chocolate chip cookies

to sell, and she suggested that they put their profits to good use. Jameson had developed a fascination with firefighters and police officers after they visited his school, and he decided to split his earnings between

the Willow Street Fire Company and the Friends of the West Lampeter Township Police Department. Stacey matched the amount that he raised from the stand and sent half of the total to each organization.

“We wanted to teach our son that community is important,” Stacey said. “We have such a great community and neighborhood here, and we wanted to give back to the people who make it special.”

As a member of the board, Feeney plans to continue his work on special projects like the Principal Pipeline. He also wishes to remain active in his advocacy work to bring national awareness to the needs of students and teachers. One of Feeney’s priorities is to raise awareness of mental health and to provide resources in schools everywhere.

“I strongly believe that all students have the ability to learn and to be successful,” Feeney said. “It really is our job as educators to help them identify their strengths and unlock their potential to achieve success. That’s what I strive for.”

Although Feeney will be working on behalf of students across the country, he said he remains rooted in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District. “I will always love this community,” Feeney added. “I really feel blessed to serve this role and to be of service to the district.”
