Lampeter-Strasburg

The Strasburg Lions Club and the Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) Community Band are once again joining forces to continue a summer tradition.
The 33rd annual Strasburg Veterans Concert will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, on the lawn in front of the Strasburg Borough Office, 145 Precision Ave., Strasburg.
The event is free. Visitors should bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating. If the weather is bad, the concert will be held at the Strasburg Fire Company, 203 Franklin St., Strasburg.
L-S Community Band director Howard Boots said the veterans concert is one of the highlights of the season. “This has been one of the concerts that we’ve done the

The Lampeter-Strasburg High School (L-S) softball team pulled out a comeback victory.
Trailing the girls’ soccer team for most of the year and tied entering the final week, the softball squad captured the inaugural Pioneer Cup.
“We were all pretty excited,” junior softball player Paige Baxter said. “We put in a lot of time to go to the other teams’ games and support them. It was fun for us.”
Started by L-S tech education teacher and assistant baseball coach Todd Garber, the Pioneer Cup is a competition where athletics teams earn points by attending each other’s games and participating in Varsity Club events.
Todd said the goals of the Pioneer Cup are to “build overall school spirit and encourage support and unity across all athletic teams, develop team camaraderie and foster strong relationships with and among teams, and promote good sportsmanship.”

Willow Street Church United Church of Christ (UCC) is continuing its commitment to be part of the fabric of the community.
Its latest outreach program is a Back-to-School Fling, which will be held Saturday, Aug. 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2724 Willow Street Pike North, Willow Street. The church’s first-of-its-kind event will be held outside, rain or shine. Everyone is welcome.
“This is a community event,” said Marty Durham, who is the church’s community connections director.
“We want to reach out to our youth and support them
Players scanned a QR code at sporting events, listed the team they are on, selected the event they were attending, and took a photograph that proved they were there.
L-S softball won a $1,000 prize, which was donated by Vitality Vending Company to be used for team apparel or team bonding activities. The softball squad held an internal poll and decided to purchase backpacks for storing uniforms and equipment.

council have long talked about wanting to be a community center, a community church, someplace where people feel welcomed and can come and not feel like (church is) being pushed on them,” said Overley. “That’s one of the reasons that we’re doing this now. Our youth population is growing for the first time in probably 15 years. We have a very young, dynamic minister (Zach Wooten), who is in his second year. He’s come in fresh with lots of dynamic ideas.”
Willow Street Church outreach coordinator Linda Overley said the church has a budget to purchase supplies and is also relying on its congregants and the community. Anyone who wishes to donate materials can bring them to the church Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. up to and including Thursday, July 31. “We have an incredibly generous congregation, and they always come through for us,” Overley said. The church will also provide food, including pizza, hot dogs, popcorn, and dessert. There will be a bounce house, a dunk tank, cornhole, ladderball, a ring toss game, a petting zoo, bubbles, and face painting.
“We as a church and a church
Wooten said, “One of the things we’re trying to do at the church is to be more of a community church, to be a resource for one another, to care for one another. And so folks who come can be a part of that community. I think we’re all yearning for something like that. So folks should come if they want to help celebrate our young people and encourage them, and we

“We tried to stay as a team when we would go to these games,” junior softball player Aubree Morrow said. “The whole team would go to a baseball game. The whole team would go to lacrosse. We went by a majority opinion to decide where we wanted to go that day.”
Paige added, “We used it as team bonding experience instead of going out and paying for a
dinner. We would just go to a baseball game, talk, and have fun and cheer on the team.”
Aubree noticed that more students attended softball games because of the Pioneer Cup competition. “Having the QR code up at our games really inspired people to come to watch so they could earn points for their team as well as support their friends,” she said.
The idea for the Pioneer Cup came from Todd’s daughters, Jules and Hanna, former L-S softball players, who ran a similar activity at their respective colleges. “I’m not aware of any high schools doing the format,” said Todd. “We adjusted it for high school. The administration was supportive, and everyone helped to get it off and running.”
Todd got help from L-S business teacher Steve Spealman, who set up the QR code system, and senior softball player Alaina Brenneman, who put up posters and made announcements to spread the word. “It really took off right away
where everyone was participating,” Todd said.
He is considering a few tweaks for next year, including naming a winner for both the first half of the year and the second half to create more interest throughout the year, as well as awarding points for winning championships and performing community service.
All L-S High School student-athletes, including those on junior varsity teams, are eligible to join the Varsity Club and can contact Todd at the beginning of the year to do so. In addition to taking part in pickleball and dodgeball tournaments during flex period,
members of the Varsity Club hold an annual chicken barbecue, run a concession stand at the powder puff game, and help with the hall of fame banquet. This year, the club organized a ceremony for seniors, where each one received a plaque.
“That was a really fun activity that we got to do,” Aubree said.
Todd, Paige, and Aubree agreed the first Pioneer Cup competition was a big success. “We know that basketball and football are heavily attended sports,” said Todd. “We wanted to really target other sports that maybe aren’t as supported in past years. I think it was a success that way.”
Paige stated, “It promoted school spirit. We’re really big on
sports at L-S, and cheering each other on is a big part of who we are. We always have big crowds come out to our games to support us because we always have good sports teams. I think it’s school pride that brings us together as a school district.”
“I think it went really well because it promoted being a team,” Aubree said. “We saw a lot of teams go together to these sporting events, and they would all scan the QR code. We heard people talk about it in school, how they wanted to go to the game, and they would encourage their teammates to scan the QR code to make sure they did win the money. But unfortunately, they didn’t. Because we did.”
most,” he said. “I think now the public has kind of received it as a proper honoring of the vets with (the band) playing great tunes, great American tunes.”
The set list will be composed of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “America” (from “West Side Story”), “His Honor,”“The Homefront,”“Rainy Days and Mondays,” “Big Fun in the Sun,” “Wayfaring Mountaineer,” “Armed Forces, The Pride of America,” “God Bless America,”“To Those We Remember,” and “Stars and Stripes Forever.”
“I think we’ve done it long enough where the community looks forward to it and really appreciates the nod to the veterans,” said Boots. “We play a wide variety of music, but obviously there are tributes to the veterans. We do the service songs, we do ‘Stars and Stripes Forever,’ which we don’t always do. We usually save it for that concert.”
The Strasburg Lions have sponsored the concert since 2014. Club secretary Jim Rice said the tradition was started by Donald A. Bachman, who teamed with the local VFW. “Donald was a pretty well-known citizen here in
Strasburg and a very patriotic person,” said Rice. “He wanted to do something to give back to the veterans and people that had served.”
Bachman’s passing in 2013 left a void with people discussing how to continue the events he had started.
“People were trying to figure out how to keep his legacy going,” Rice said. “(Strasburg Borough) called around the different organizations to see what people could do to promote these events and keep them going. And we chose to do the veterans concert.”
Rice noted that summer is an ideal time for such an event. “Our meetings are from September to June, and we don’t want to lay dormant in the summer months,” he said. “We want to keep our activities going within our club and then also within the community as well.”
The concert has special meaning to Boots, who served in the Pennsylvania Air National Guard for 24 years. “Anytime we can honor the vets and keep them in the forefront of people’s minds in the community is good,” he said.
The L-S Community Band was formed in 1992. “A small-town community band concert is such a long tradition here in Strasburg,” said Boots. “There was always a celebration in music here. Even long before (the L-S Community Band), every community had their like little bands and things like that.”
The band has 46 members with varying levels of experience, and everyone is welcome to join. “It’s really been growing,” said Boots.
The director stated that he enjoys the camaraderie among the musicians. “As I always tell the band, one

could all use a little bit more encouragement right now.”
Durham said the church’s motto is “Hope, love, and joy live here.”
“That’s an important quote,” she noted. “That’s the model that we stand by. We want people to come as they are. God is love, and we want people to find love when they come here and when they see us. They should come to this event if they need support, if they need school supplies, if they want to free meal, if they want to have fun and fellowship, if they want to make new connections, if they just want to be uplifted. There are so many reasons to come here.”
Willow Street Church had previously held a Spring Fling on Mother’s Day weekend, but that ended after the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Overley said as the congregation aged, the church was unable to staff large events. This year seemed like an ideal time to bring back the event in a new format and add fresh ideas. “We just decided that why let the grass grow under our feet, just because we’ve always done it on Mother’s Day? We wanted to do the school backpack giveaway which we had done in the past, but it was not a big event. We figured what better way to reintroduce ourselves to the community than through a bash?” Overley said.
Willow Street Church holds many events throughout the year, including Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. The church provides healthy community meals on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Doors open at 5 p.m. Meals are served beginning at 5:30 p.m, and continuing until everyone has eaten.

of the cool things about the band is I meet people, and we get to know one another,” said Boots. “Probably, if it wasn’t for music, we’d never, ever meet each other or learn about each other. Because of music, we come together, and that’s what’s cool with the community. It’s an opportunity … to bring people together in the name of the veterans and our great country we live in.”
