Rehabilitating Wildlife At Raven Ridge

The public is invited to attend the 28th annual Veterans Concert on Sunday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. The event will take place on the front lawn of the Strasburg Borough Office, 145 Precision Ave., Strasburg. Music will be provided by the Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band to honor America’s veterans. The concert will be free to the public. Attendees can bring lawn chairs or blankets on which to sit. In 2010, there was an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig located in the Gulf of Mexico, which resulted in what is believed to be the largest marine oil spill in history. After hearing about the oil spill, something sparked in Washington Boro resident Tracie Young. “I saw all those animals covered in oil, and I was so upset,” recalled Tracie. “I cried every day.” Tracie applied to help save the animals, but Deepwater Horizon Pharaoh is one of several non-releasable animals at Raven Ridge Wildlife Center.

Shortly after, one night when Tracie and her husband, Kurt, were driving home from dinner, Tracie witnessed a vehicle hit a goose and drive away. Immediately, Tracie pulled off to the side of the road to rescue the goose. It took her three days to find a rehabilitation center for the goose, and it was located an hour and a half away. After arriving at Red Creek Wildlife Center in Schuylkill County, Tracie saw brochures for wildlife rehabilitation classes. Soon enough, Tracie realized her dream was to help animals.

The Paradise Meals on Wheels program is affiliated with Lancaster Meals on Wheels, which makes about 350 meals per day for area recipients. The Paradise organization is located in a room in the Together Community Center (TCC), 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. Meals provided by the Lancaster program are delivered to TCC each Monday through Friday. One hot meal and one cold meal are included each weekday for each of about 25 clients. Two drivers pick up the meals on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and one driver handles the lighter Tuesday and Thursday routes. Meals are provided for a nominal fee. Clients receive five ounces of meat, five ounces of starch, and three ounces of vegetable a day, and meals are available for recipients who need to follow a customized diet, including those on low-sodium, diabetic, low vitamin K, vegetarian, and gluten-free diets, as well as

Salads are sometimes served in lieu of sandwiches. Currently, the Paradise organization could use a few volunteer drivers. Volunteer time to drive totals about three hours a month. Drivers pick up meals at 8:30 a.m. at TCC and deliver on one of two routes from 9 to 10:30 a.m. “I have 20 drivers and right now I have no substitutes,” noted Glass. Since the Paradise delivery area extends to Lampeter, Glass noted it would be nice to have a driver from that area. The delivery range could include Georgetown, Kinzers, White Horse, the area west to the intersection of routes 896 and 30, and the region north beyond the village of Intercourse. The program allows many senior residents as well as others recovering from illnesses to remain in their own homes. Those wishing to help or to observe a route may call 717-940-4640.

Nutrition Program Vouchers Available Lancaster County Office of Aging announced that as of July 12, it still had Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers available for seniors. The vouchers can be exchanged for Pennsylvaniagrown fruits and vegetables through November at participating farmers markets and roadside stands. Each person is eligible to receive vouchers only once per year. An individual must be at least 60 years of age, reside in Lancaster County, and have an annual household income of less than $23,828 for one person or less than $32,227 for two. Those living in nursing homes or other residential facilities where meals are provided are not eligible for this program. Eligible people who have not received vouchers this year may obtain the application at www.LancoAging.org or by calling Lancaster County Office of Aging at 717-299-7979.

Bri Garber Finishes Spectacular College Career The five years that Bri Garber spent at West Chester University as a member of the softball team sure seemed to rush past in the blink of an eye. Yet, when you look back on her collegiate career, her fingerprints are all over the West Chester softball record book. Garber holds six career records and two more singleseason marks while also appearing at the top of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) ledger in three career categories. She owns the second-best total in eight other career statistics and five other single-season columns in the Golden Rams’ record book while tacking on two more runner-up numbers in the PSAC book. Garber was part of two PSAC championships (2017, 2021) and three straight Atlantic Region championships (2018, 2019, 2021). She played an
integral role on some of the most successful and talented softball teams in West Chester University history. The former LampeterStrasburg all-star was a .400 hitter three times during her college career. She was also a two-time honorable mention All-America, three-time AllPSAC East selection, and three-time first-team NFCA All-Atlantic Region pick. She won the PSAC East Player of the Year award in 2018 and received the Freshman of the Year nod the year before. Garber’s career .398 batting average ranks second all-time at West Chester. She holds the school record for games played (247) and games started (243). Her 320 hits is a school and conference alltime mark. The mainstay at second base also holds school records for runs scored (226) and total bases (409). Her sin-
gle-season school records include runs scored (61 in 2019) and hits (85 in 2018). Her 59 runs scored in 2018 is also the second-best mark in school history. She entered the program as
a left-handed slapper. Five years later, she exits with a .508 slugging percentage and ranks among the top 10 in the school in career doubles (42). She lists third all-time in RBIs (138) as well.

For a long time, it had been the vision of Mission Church, 651 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, to open a food pantry to the community. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the church shifted staff roles to keep everyone employed, and after receiving a donation of 12,000 pounds of food, the staff decided to act on the vision of opening Mission Food Pantry. On April 9, 2020, the church officially landed the pantry. At first, the staff members were unsure of how to run a food pantry, so they contacted several food pantries across the country for help. Mission Food Pantry operated out of the church’s gymnasium for several months. Knowing the food pantry had to be relocated, the staff renovated four unused classrooms in the facility. By August of 2020,
Mission Food Pantry moved into its permanent home. “In the beginning, it was eye opening to see how much need there was in the community,” said Brian Bitler, director of Mission Food Pantry and director of operations and community impact at Mission Church. “We don’t do income verification. If people say they have a need, we want to make the food available to them.” Mission Food Pantry partners with four different food banks in the area and receives donations from several local businesses. “It’s a community effort,” stated Bitler. “ We have the privilege of housing everything, but we’re all working together to help those in need in our community.” Bitler noted that he and the staff try their best to take the stigma away from accepting help from others. At Mission Food Pantry, Bitler wants everyone to know there is no

Library Announces Agreement of Sale
Music at the Veterans Concert will be provided by the Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band.
In the event of rain, the concert will be relocated to the Strasburg Fire Station, 203 Franklin St., Strasburg. The Strasburg Lions Club, in recognition of veterans who are residents of the Strasburg area, will sponsor the event. “I am looking forward to sitting in the shade and enjoying the concert after missing it last year,” said Strasburg Lions Club member Bruce Ryder. “Folks should come to the concert to help honor our surviving veterans and enjoy the patriotic music that we all know so well.” The band, which will be conducted by Howard Boots, will play patriotic songs, such as “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “Songs of Soldiers,” “Sound Off March,” “America the Beautiful,” and “Stars and Stripes Forever.” Other musical numbers will include “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho,” which will feature Dale Diller on the trombone, and “Sing, Sing, Sing,” with Howard Boots on the clarinet. Other songs include “Rhapsody of Reruns,” “Led Zeppelin Medley,” “Manhattan Beach March,” and “Reflections From the Wall.” The Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band is celebrating its 29th anniversary this year. The band was formed in 1992 due to an adult education course. It performs at a variety of local venues
throughout the year and currently has about 30 members. The band rehearses weekly throughout the year and welcomes new members. The Strasburg Lions Club was chartered in 1932 as a member of Lions Clubs International and currently has over 50 members. It is one of 49 clubs in the LancasterLebanon area that make up District 14-D of the Pennsylvania Lions. In addition to sponsoring this concert, the Strasburg Lions Club provides financial support to numerous local community organizations such as StrasburgHeisler Library, Strasburg/Willow Street Softball Baseball Association, Strasburg Scout House, Strasburg Playground Association, the Salvation Army, Lampeter-Strasburg Post Prom, and Santa’s Helper. It also presents scholarship awards to Lampeter-Strasburg graduates. In addition, the Strasburg Lions Club sponsors and organizes the Strasburg Halloween Parade and the Santa Claus Train Ride on the Strasburg Rail Road, and it supports the Christmas Banquet for Vision Corps. The Board of Trustees of Lancaster Public Library (LPL) recently announced the agreement of sale of the library building located at 125 N. Duke St., Lancaster. The building is under agreement to a group of investors who have strong ties to the community and who are purchasing the property for its ultimate use by Saint James Episcopal Church, located at 119 N. Duke St. The agreement precedes the eventual move by LPL to a new library location at Barney Ewell Plaza on Queen Street. The new building is intended to improve library services to the Lancaster community with expanded and improved interior and exterior spaces, ADA compliance, and closer proximity to the heart of downtown Lancaster. Until the new facility is ready, the library will retain ownership of and continue to operate in its current location, serving approximately 211,000 Lancaster County residents as a community center for learning,

When the library’s move is complete and the sale transaction is closed, which are both expected to occur within two years, the property may be converted to office use until Saint James has finalized its longterm plans for the building. In the meantime, Saint James will begin a discernment process to assess how the property will add to its ongoing commitment to civic and spiritual renewal, sustainability, and community growth. Both Saint James Episcopal Church and LPL hold deep roots in Lancaster history. The church has maintained its location on the corner of Orange and Duke streets for 275 years and includes a 200-year-old sanctuary. The Pennsylvania Railroad Museum recently purchased the three existing books from J. Arthur Moore’s four-book collection related to his fictional Virginia and Truckee Railroad of West Virginia. This railroad shares a name with a real railroad in Nevada. Moore began writing the four books 40 years ago. When “Summer of Two Worlds” was finished, it was released in manuscript form; in 2015, it was first published, and it was recently republished in its third edition. “Summer at Stewart Creek” was recently revised and then released on Dec. 1, 2020, and “Twelfth Winter,” was
released on June 1. The remaining book, “Stranded in Snow Shoe,” is due out in early 2022; this book, “Summer of Two Worlds” and “Twelfth Winter” make up the “Summer of Two Worlds” trilogy. “Summer of Two Worlds” has also been released alongside two other titles by Moore: “Journey Into Darkness,” a story in four parts, and “Blake’s Story: Revenge and Forgiveness.” At the time, these three books were released as Civil War and Native American historical fiction for middle grade through adult readers. “Summer at Stewart Creek” includes photo illustrations of
an HO-scale model railroad that the author created when envisioning the book’s setting. The cover photos for this book feature the Tahoo, a locomotive in the collection at the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum. The Tahoo was used on the real-life Virginia and Truckee Railroad in Nevada. The Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes & Crematory will open a new funeral home location with an on-site crematory in Willow Street in 2022. Designed by Cox & Evans Architects, the facilities will be built on nearly three acres of what was previously an office building and farmland. The new 12,500-square-foot building will include 145 parking spaces. Site work design has been done by RGS Associates. Fulton Bank is providing financing for the project, and Benchmark Construction will be the general contractor. The modern funeral home will feature several amenities, including a state-of-the-art crematory, a spacious lobby, a large chapel with vaulted ceilings and 350 seats, a small chapel with a fireplace and vaulted ceilings, four arrangement offices, a witness room, a comfort room, a picturesque patio and garden located off the large chapel, a monument office, a pre-planning office

and a large carport for family comfort. Kelly Gramola Townsend will serve as the supervising funeral director for the new funeral home location. She is a native of Lancaster County and has spent a significant amount of time with her family in Willow Street. The design of the funeral home will combine modern styles with architectural elements commonly found in the Lancaster area, including touches of limestone like those found on Lancaster County barns. Each room will have an open design and feature large windows to fill gathering
spaces with as much natural light as possible. Once the new funeral home is complete, Charles F.
