Annual blood drive will be held in memory of L-S graduate

The third annual blood drive to honor Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School alumnus Ryan Smith will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 9, at First Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg. The date of the event has been selected to coincide with what would have been Ryan’s 24th birthday, and the drive will occur from 1 to 6 p.m.

Ryan graduated from L-S in 2018 and attended East Stroudsburg University to study exercise science. He was an avid basketball player in both high school and college; Ryan received the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Freshman of the Year Award in 2019. In August 2019, Ryan was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. He

passed away at the age of 21 in March 2021 after battling the disease for 19 months.

The first blood drive was held in August 2021. Ryan’s mother, Kim, partnered with the American Red

While Ryan was receiving treatment, members of the community raised over $10,000 to help the Smith family cover medical expenses. After Ryan’s death, Kim decided to use the remaining funds to both honor Ryan’s memory and give back to the community by creating the Ryan N. Smith RelentlesS Fund through the Lancaster County Community Foundation.

Cross to plan the event after being connected with the organization by Heather Reynolds. Reynolds and Kim were both members of local community outreach group Mitzvah Moms.

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum reinvents history

There’s ancient history. There’s modern history.

And then there’s living history. At Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, history is alive and thriving.

A Pennsylvania German heritage site situated at 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is an exploratory learning tool and a portal to the locale’s past. Among its highlights are its interactive nature, craft

demonstrations and volunteers dressed in period garb.

“George and Henry Landis envisioned Landis Valley being a Williamsburg in central Pennsylvania,” said Timothy Essig, a museum educator at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. “They envisioned this living history museum of Pennsylvania Dutch in southcentral Pennsylvania. Living history is a reenactment of a previous time period. When you come to Landis Valley and you see these different living

Mennonite Life will offer Fraktur art workshop

Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will offer a workshop on Friday, July 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. The class will be hosted by Emily Smucker-Beidler, a resident of Centerville and an art teacher at Landisville Primary Center. Smucker-Beidler will explain how to create art pieces in the early American fraktur style, as well as delve into the history of the art form. Preregistration for the workshop is required and must be

completed by Tuesday, July 25, at https://mennonitelife.org/events.

When Swiss-German immigrants first came to Pennsylvania, they didn’t bring much; often the settlers only had a few items, such as birth certificates and family Bibles.

Although they didn’t have any physical mementos from their homeland, they remembered it fondly and regularly created what became known as fraktur art pieces.

The word fraktur means fractured writing, and it referred to a specific type of embellished font. The term

now refers to the specific style of art created by Pennsylvania settlers between 1740 and 1840. It is one of the oldest forms of American folk art, it draws inspiration from illustrated manuscripts in medieval Europe. Fraktur art often depicts three core symbols from Europe: birds, hearts and tulips. However, the settlers began to incorporate aspects of their new lives in America into the art.

During the workshop, Smucker-Beidler will offer a presentation on birds that were depicted through fraktur art, many of which were native to Pennsylvania and are now extinct. Participants will compare old art pieces and analyze which parts of the environment the settlers were integrating through the images. Participants will then be able to choose from three templates of fraktur

drawings, which they will trace onto Bristol board and redefine with ink pens. After the template has been traced, participants will complete the piece with their materials of choice. Workshop attendees are invited to bring their own paints or colored pencils, but materials will also be available to purchase during the class. At the end of the workshop, each artist will be able to take home his or her finished fraktur art piece.

“Fraktur art is a great portal to understanding so many things,” Smucker-Beidler said. “These were normal, everyday people that at the end of the day just wanted to make something beautiful.” Often, fraktur artists would not even sign their names on the finished piece. Many fraktur artists were schoolteachers who gave out the artwork as a reward to students.

Smucker-Beidler first learned about fraktur art in Montgomery County, where she was raised. In eighth grade, she was mentored by Roma Ruth, a prolific fraktur artist. Smucker-Beidler also learned from her neighbor Mary Jane Hershey, a fraktur art collector and researcher. After attending college to study fine art, Smucker-Beidler was sought out by people requesting fraktur art pieces, due to the fact that few artists still create it. “I’ve fallen in love with the history of it,” Smucker-Beidler said. “It speaks to people’s basic need to make something beautiful.”

Southern End Sluggers claim tournament crown

Members of the team include (front, from left) Gavrin Wyant, L-S; Dom Burrell, PV; Westin Rhine, Solanco; Carter Galbreath, Solanco; Cam Naggy, Octorara; Chase Messinger, L-S; (back) coach Jeremy Messinger; coach Greg Schaub; Brady Messinger, L-S; Landon Welk, Solanco; Jake Stahovich, L-S; Houston Schreck, L-S; Toby Schaub, CV; Cordell Bair, CV; coach Nate Galbreath; (not pictured) coach Justin Hart; and Brayden Hart, L-S.

The Southern End Sluggers, a youth baseball team made up of players from Solanco, Lampeter-Strasburg, Conestoga Valley, Octorara and Pequea Valley, recently captured the Essex Express Baseball Father’s Day Summer Classic.

“Last fall, we won three tournaments,” said coach Nate Galbreath. “This tournament made it four in a row. We have kids of equal talent, so we bat all 12, and every kid gets their time on the bench.”

The tournament was held

in Essex, Md.

The Sluggers opened with a 12-1 Saturday morning win over the Owings Mills’ Spartans. Later that evening, the Sluggers settled for an 8-8 tie against the Arlington All-Stars.

“The Saturday games were for seeding, so we went into the single elimination Sunday games as the second seed,” Galbreath explained.

Sunday morning, the Sluggers defeated In the Dirt 8-1 and in the afternoon pulled out a 4-3, come-from-behind

win over the Blue Chips to get to the finals. There the Sluggers defeated the top seed, Tripletown Aces, 4-2 to claim the tournament crown.

“It was a total team effort,” said Galbreath. “We pitched well; made a lot of great plays defensively, including turning multiple double plays; and had some great throws home from the outfield to nail runners at the plate. Everyone put the ball in play, and we had very few strikeouts against some really good pitching,” he added. “We had

multiple extra base hits, and we ran the bases really well.”

The Susquehanna District, a part of the Boy Scouts of America’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council, held its annual awards dinner on June 14 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Willow Street. The annual dinner recognizes leaders who have exemplified the Scouting ideals and program in their Scout units or leadership within the district.

The District Award of Merit is the top volunteer award the district can present. Chet Bowen from Troop 84 and Fred Frey from Troop 146 received this award at the dinner.

Bowen was the committee chair for Pack 93 for six years and has been an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 84 for five years and a member of Crew 162 for two years. He is also a unit commissioner. He is currently the Pennsylvania Dutch Council spring sales chair and the district committee membership chair. He was a Wood Badge staff member

Frey is an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 146, the committee chair of Pack 146 and an assistant roundtable commissioner for the district, a role in which he is instrumental in creating recruitment materials and incentives. He also serves on staff for the College of Commissioner Science and often volunteers for district events like the Klondike Derby. Frey has earned the bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the College of Commissioners Science, Arrowhead Honor as a commissioner, and Scouter’s Key, and he is an Ordeal member of the Order of the Arrow.

Located in Manheim Township, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum consists of 40 acres of general Pennsylvania Dutch living history surrounded by 60 acres of fields and farmland. Nearly 60 buildings have been erected on the property, some of which are historically interpreted constructions that provide the village with its 18th- and 19th-century atmosphere and others of which serve supportive purposes.

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is a state-operated facility that is also supported by the Landis Valley

Associates.

“Our goal continues to be to share the story of this unique culture in American history,” said Essig. “When you come to Landis Valley, you’re going to learn about agriculture, different trades and the architecture of the overall German contribution to the American culture. We do tell a big story.”

The peoples who would later come to be known as Pennsylvania Dutch immigrated to the United States and the area in three distinct waves, from the 1680s to the 1840s. Brothers and Landis Valley founders Henry and George Landis collected more than 200,000 objects related to these immingrants’ culture

and stored them in buildings that, in 1925, became the foundation upon which Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum was built.

When the state became involved with its operation in the mid-1950s, Landis Valley was transformed into the living history village it is today.

“Henry and George Landis were two men focused on their culture,” said Essig. “They weren’t millionaires, but they spent their entire lives collecting artifacts of that culture.”

Today, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum hosts nearly 70,000 visitors each year for school field trips, family vacation visits, bus trips from destinations main-

ly east of the Mississippi River, special events and facility rentals. The visitors come mostly from southeast and southcentral Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey and from as far away as the rest of the 50 states and even other countries.

The mission of Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is supported by hundreds of volunteers.

“History is not ‘was’; history ‘is,’” said Essig. “You experience history when you visit Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. History comes to life.”

In addition to the community service projects, the Smith family has created multiple scholarships in Ryan’s name. The Ryan N. “One thing we feel very strongly about is trying to support the community, because it supported us so much through our journey,” Kim said. “We also want to give back to the things that were important to Ryan: his youth group, his faith and athletics.”

Make It With Wool Contest announced

The Pennsylvania Make It With Wool (MIWW) Contest will take place on Saturday, Oct. 7, at the PA Preferred Banquet Hall at the Farm Show Complex, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. The contest is open to individuals age 8 and older who sew, knit, or crochet garments with wool or other animal fibers.

There are three categories for individuals under age 25, along with a category for adults age 25 and older and a Made for Others category for which the model and contestant may be of any age.

Expert judges will handle the garments and meet with the contestants. Judging will be based on several criteria,

Trout Unlimited hosts fishing derby

including appropriateness to the contestant’s lifestyle, fit and overall appearance, coordination of fabric/yarn with garment style and design, the contestant’s presentation, construction quality, creativity in design and use of wool, and how well the entry conveys and promotes the beauty, comfort, and versatility of wool. All fabrics or yarns used in the body of the garment must be 60% or more animal fiber.

Registration is due by Tuesday, Sept. 5. There is a registration fee, plus an additional testing fee per fabric or yarn used. For a registration form and more details, contact Linda Siegel at 717274-1197 or linda @lebaweb.com. For additional details, visit www.makeit withwool.com.

A fishing derby organized by the Donegal Chapter of Trout Unlimited (DTU) in collaboration with the Lancaster Special Olympics took place on June 17. The event was hosted at Hugh Wenger’s residence in Elizabethtown and planned by lead organizers Wenger; Claire Landis, president of DTU; and Tony Watts, a member of the Special Olympics leadership team.

A total of 10 athletes, accompanied by their guests, participated in the derby, receiving assistance from 29 DTU volunteers. The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission (F&BC) provided fishing rods, while Kinsey’s Outdoors supplied the bait.

To facilitate the smooth movement of supplies and assist guests, Messick’s Equipment offered a utility

transport vehicle. Andy Desko, aquatic resource program specialist from the Pennsylvania F&BC, acquired a special fishing event permit and provided guidance for the event.

The derby began a 9 a.m. in the well-stocked pond, showcasing the contestants’ angling skills. The contestants successfully caught a variety of species, including catfish, bluegills and smallmouth bass. By noon, the Olympians had collectively reeled in more than 140 fish, with Caroline Whitson leading the pack by catching 25 fish. The attendees also had the opportunity to observe the red-winged blackbirds, listen to the croaking bullfrogs and catch glimpses of turtles surfacing from the water.

At noon, DTU member Stan Shenk and his crew served lunch to all the participants. The meal was accompanied by snacks provided by Utz and Pepperidge Farm.

Tickets available for Lititz Chocolate Walk

The Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area will hold its 22nd annual Lititz Chocolate Walk on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event is hosted each year by the Kiwanis Club and Wilbur Chocolate on the Saturday before Columbus Day. All money raised supports children’s charities, such as the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic and Lititz and Manheim Township libraries.

All the chefs and chocolatiers donate their time and treats, and merchants provide locations for the chocolatiers to distribute food.

The event has sold out in recent years, so early ticket

LOCAL BUSINESS DIRECTORY

purchase is recommended. Tickets went on sale on July 1, and more than 500 tickets were sold within the first 24 hours. To purchase tickets, visit www.lititzchocolate walk.com or stop by Wilbur Chocolate, 45 N. Broad St., Lititz; Aaron’s Books, 35 E. Main St., Lititz; Zum Anker Alley Shoppes, 22 E. Main St. (rear), Lititz; Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz; or Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster.

Over the course of the event’s existence, the Kiwanis Club - which has fewer than 25 active members - has raised more than $1 million for local children’s charities, with more than $100,000

raised last year. As part of Kiwanis International, a worldwide service organization, the Lititz club is devoted to helping the children of the world, one child, one community at a time.
