Garden Spot FFA’s agricultural sales team places first in state competition

FromJune 13 to 15, LampeterStrasburg High School’s Garden Spot FFA team competed at the FFA State Convention at Penn State University in State College. Over the course of the three days, students competed in a variety of career and leadership development events, as well as multiple workshops that featured keynote speakers.

In the agricultural sales portion of the convention, Ava Immel placed first and Sarah Firestone placed second. Both students, who are sophomores at L-S, received gold medals. The high school’s agricultural sales team, which comprised Immel, Firestone, Sydney Albright and Jaclyn Martin, placed first in the state, and it will compete at the national convention in October.

During the competition, each student on the team participated in an individual sales call, during which he or she was tasked with identifying a product that would best suit a group of customers. Each contestant was allotted 15 minutes to discern the customers’ needs, formulate a presale call and present a sales pitch. The team members were also tested on different aspects of working in sales and what makes a salesperson successful.

Prior to the competition, the sales team was given a list of products that the students would be tested on during the convention. The list included different types of feed and tubs, and the team members spent months studying every detail of the products, such as the benefits of using them and potential objections that buyers might have.

A piece of history restored

In the fall of 2022, LancasterHistory staff member Randy Harris noticed that multiple gravestones at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Lancaster were in need of attention. The three gravestones were leaning heavily and were at risk of falling over completely without the proper attention. Although the historic cemetery is home to many graves, these particular gravestones preserve an important piece of Lancaster’s history, as they belong to Lydia Hamilton Smith and her two sons, William and Isaac.

Harris contacted the African

American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania and Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes to share his concerns about the gravesites. The organizations partnered with LancasterHistory to devise a plan to restore the burial site. Andre Dominguez, a LancasterHistory volunteer and local historian, created a conservation report for the site and worked with Mosko Cemetery Monument Services to start the process of resetting and stabilizing the gravestones.

Dominguez and Mosko used two 12-foot-tall cranes to lift the headstones, each of which weighed over 800 pounds. After the stones were

moved aside, the cranes were used to pick up the bases, allowing the Dominguez and Mosko to dig down and level the ground with stone and marble chips. The base and headstones were then moved back to their proper place and sealed to prevent water from causing any further destabilization. Dominguez then cleaned all three of the grave markers.

Harris and Dominguez installed a commemorative marker at the gravesite following the restoration. The marker offers information on the Smith family and the significance of its role in history. Smith was a close friend of Thaddeus Stevens, and she worked as his housekeeper. The two were heavily involved in the Underground Railroad and actively worked for the

liberation of slaves during the 19th century. “There have been questions about their relationship and lots of misinformation throughout the years, including varied accounts of where (Smith) is buried,” Harris said. “This is another phase of continuing to find accurate information on two pivotal members of American history.” A dedication ceremony for the new historical marker was held on June 28.

LancasterHistory is currently in the design phase for a large project to create the Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Smith Center for History and Democracy in downtown Lancaster. The building will be located on the corner of South Queen Street and Vine Street, and it will be part of the Lancaster County Convention Center. In the new

Fraktur workshop posted

Mennonite Life will present a hands-on exploration of the Pennsylvania German art of fraktur on Friday, July 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. Under the guidance of fraktur artist Emily Smucker-Beidler, participants will learn what birds influenced the art form’s earliest nature motifs, as well as the history behind its characteristic polka-dot, checkerboard and striped patterns. Each participant will create his or her own 5-by-7-inch fanciful fraktur bird.

installation, visitors will have a chance to learn about Lancaster’s role in the Civil War and the lives of Stevens and Smith, as well as others who were involved with abolitionist efforts. “These people were considered fringe characters with no grounding in reality. They pushed the envelope until they brought more peo-

ple to their side,” Harris said. “We want to convey the importance of these people’s lives and what it really meant to be an abolitionist and combat the horrors of slavery.”

LancasterHistory hopes to begin construction on the project by the spring of 2025. For more information, visit www.lancasterhistory.org.

the program has continued to grow each year, with the foundation now serving twice as many people as it did in 2015.

Building Bridges employs two equine therapists, one of whom is a veteran himself. Equine therapy is used to help veterans experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other conditions from their time in the military. All of the foundation’s services remain free due to community fundraising and sponsors.

In 2018, Building Bridges created the Vet’s Café. Every Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon, veterans are invited to gather at the café, which is stationed atop a scenic hill on the property. The private atmosphere, free from the sounds of traffic or commotion, offers veterans an opportunity to connect with those who have had similar experiences. Local grocery stores provide pastries, cookies and coffee for the café. “The biggest thing that happens there is the conversation,” said Joe Campbell, chief operating officer of Building Bridges. “Sometimes it’s riotous laughter; sometimes it’s a sedated discussion about things that are near and dear to them.”

Building Bridges serves veterans from across Lancaster County and sees participation from many residents of the Southern End. As the foundation has grown over the years, it has made an effort to engage in community events such as the Solanco and West Lampeter fairs and Oregon Dairy’s Celebration of America event. The number of veterans participating in the Vet’s Café has continued to grow each year.

Once a month, the Vet’s Café hosts a guest speaker to cover any of a wide range of subjects relating to PTSD and life after service in the armed forces. Building Bridges plans to open an additional weekly timeslot at the Vet’s Café to make it accessible for younger veterans who may work day jobs.

For those interested in participating in equine therapy at Building Bridges, Campbell extends an offer: visit the Vet’s Café on a Thursday morning. The invitation includes families

of veterans as well, and Campbell said he will show what the farm has to offer. “Immediately when you go up the driveway, there’s a sense of comfort and safety,” he added. For more information, visit www.buildingbridges foundation.org.

Garden Spot FFA

“While we were preparing for the convention, we took a breath and reassured ourselves that we prepared and know what we’re doing,” Firestone said. “We wanted to enjoy it together; whether it’s win or lose, we would know that we did our best.”

To prepare for the national convention, the Garden Spot agricultural sales team convened for summer practices. Once qualified to compete at the national level, the team was provided with a new set of products to examine. In addition to studying the product list, the team members are also shadowing professional salespeople to hone their skills before the big competition.

The Garden Spot FFA team was especially motivat-

ed to qualify for the national convention to hear national FFA secretary Jessica Herr’s retiring address, as Herr is a close friend of the team members. The students are

also looking forward to supporting their FFA comrade Abigail O’Neil, a candidate for a national FFA officer position for the 2023-2024 school year.

the form of a sidewalk mosaic. The city is seeking an artist to complete the 40-square-foot mosaic to be installed in the concrete of the courtyard.

The city is committed to creating opportunities for local artists, be it through commissioned works or by facilitating learning opportunities for skill development. Artists are preferred to reside in or near Lancaster city, although non-local artists are also welcome to apply, particularly those who have experience working with emerging artists. Non-local artists will be asked to provide hands-on experience to one local artist throughout the artistic process.

Selection will take place using a two-phase process. A selection committee will first review applications submitted through the request for qualification. Up to three finalists will be selected by the committee. Finalists will then be invited to complete phase two of the selection process, which will include the final design proposal. Final design proposals will be reviewed by the Public Art Advisory Board.

The deadline to submit proposals is Monday, July 17. For more details, go to www.cityoflancasterpa.gov.
