Second Fridays at Lampeter
United Methodist Church (UMC) have proven to be popular.
The event that will take place on Friday, July 11, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. might be the biggest one yet.
The band Midst the Noise will
perform patriotic songs and music from the ’70s to today at the church, 1101 Village Road, Lancaster. Attendees will be encouraged to sing along with the five-piece acoustic group that includes Tracie Kortright, who is also a member of Lampeter UMC’s praise band.
Midst the Noise is composed of county residents. Kortright (vocals) is from West Lampeter
Township. Allan Dutton (guitar and vocals) and drummer Mike Egge both live in Manor Township. Genise Wade (vocals) hails from Conestoga Township, and Kevin Kresge (bass and vocals) is from West Hempfield Township.
“It’s going to be so much fun,” Kortright said. “We especially love Lampeter UMC because of how much (it loves) the community and

Charlie Hirschy said he is experiencing all the feelings: happiness, excitement, and sadness.
“We’re excited to go, but we’re very, very sad to leave here,” he said.
Hirschy’s last official day as associate pastor at Grace Church at Willow Valley was June 15. He will begin his new job as lead pastor at Valley Grace Church in Hagerstown, Md., on Monday, July 14.
“I have enjoyed working here,” Hirschy said in early June. “I love working here, but a couple of years ago, as I started thinking about where I was and who I am and how God has wired me, I talked with the elders.” He explained that he didn’t have a timeline in mind, but he had been considering becoming a lead pastor in the future. “They affirmed that and have been supportive,” Hirschy said.
The process began last December.

The first Progressive Agricultural Safety Day was such a big success, Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School’s Garden Spot FFA is already looking forward to the next one.
Torrential downpours did not dampen the spirits of the 220 fifth-graders who attended the event at the West Lampeter Fairgrounds on May 9.
“The students were having a really great time,” said L-S freshman Ashlynn Frey. “They were getting into the stations, and they were answering all the questions. They were very enthusiastic and enjoyed the hands-on activities.”
Katie Ranck, one of two Garden Spot FFA advisers, stated she was happy with the way all the students handled the soggy conditions. “The fifth-graders were troupers with the rain, and they were smiling ear to ear,” said Ranck. “We’re thankful for the teachers who led them over, and I am proud of the way everyone adapted to make the day happen.”
She was also grateful to hold the event at the fairgrounds. “It’s a community space that’s very ag-based and rich in ag history,” said Ranck. “It was a neat way to see that all come together.”
Garden Spot FFA also holds a third-grade holiday workshop and an ag literacy week in March for students in kindergarten through second grades. There is a middle school FFA program for students in sixth through eighth grades. “Fifth grade is a group we really haven’t talked to, so it was
Hirschy was interviewed and preached a sermon at the Maryland church in April. “The congregation
voted to affirm the call,” he said. “It was a months-long process of exploring and seeing if this was a good fit
for us and a good fit for them.”

Hirschy had been affiliated with Grace Church for nearly 13 years, starting as a member of the congregation. He began attending the church during his freshman year at Lancaster Bible College (LBC). He grew up in Indiana, where his youth pastor was Dan Cosentino, a native of Palmyra and an LBC graduate.
Cosentino had interned at Grace Church while attending LBC and told Hirschy, “If you’re looking for a church to get plugged in to, I know of one.” Grace Church is part of the Charis Fellowship denomination, like Hirschy’s church back home in Indiana.
Hirschy also interned at Grace Church while attending LBC. While at LBC, Hirschy started dating his

how the church tries to find what the needs of the community are and meet those needs.”
Lampeter UMC will provide customary picnic fare such as hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, and salads, as well as drinks. Visitors should bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating. If it rains, the concert will be held inside.
Lampeter UMC started its Second Friday tradition 18 months ago, and it runs yearround. Anne Reinert and Velda Emonds, co-chairs of the church’s outreach and social witness committee, help organize the events along with Sheila Moore and other volunteers.
“Second Fridays are to bring the community together,” said Reinert. “It’s to get the kids involved and give the community something to do.”
Previous Second Fridays have featured trivia, line dancing, and a magician. “It’s always something different, and it’s always free,” Moore said.
Lampeter UMC volunteers whip up different kinds of food depending on the event, but one item is a fan favorite. “We’re getting pretty famous for our homemade pizzas,” Moore said. Pizza will be served at the Friday, Aug. 8, event, which will be held indoors. Visitors will be encouraged to wear ’80s attire, and a movie from that decade will be shown.
People who come to Second Fridays are invited to bring goods for the church’s Blessings Pantry. The pantry, which serves residents of the Penn Manor and Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) school districts, is open Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon, Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m., and the first and third Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon.
It is a choice pantry, which means people shop for items with assistance from volunteers. Blessings Pantry usually has a variety of itms including produce, cereal, paper products, toiletries, laundry detergent, and diapers.
The food bank is supported by grant money and members of the Lampeter UMC congregation. Cub Scout Pack 286 of Lampeter and the L-S School District hold food drives to assist. Families of children who attended vacation Bible school in June also brought donations.

really neat to be able to connect with them before they enter middle school and started hearing about the Junior FFA,” Ranck said.
Garden Spot FFA adviser Holly Oberholtzer learned about safety day while attending a national convention. L-S sophomores Landon Giberson and Trent Thomas were charged with bringing the idea to fruition.

“We felt like we wanted to tap in to our fifth-grade population here and show them a different angle of content we teach, as well as content within agriculture,” Ranck said. “We tapped on the shoulders of our co-chairs (Trent and Landon) and said, ‘Let’s see if we can make this happen.’”
Garden Spot FFA used the Progressive Agriculture Safety Day curriculum. Ranck and Oberholtzer underwent training to be able to implement the stations accurately and safely and then adapted it to meet the needs of the L-S community.
“We wanted to show students that agriculture looks at producer and consumer knowledge,” said Ranck. “I think the safety day showcased that and introduced (the younger students) to not only to tractor and livestock safety, but food safety, fire safety, hearing safety, and electrical safety.”
Seven of the nine stations were led by community members and entities: Hoober Inc., Refton Fire Company, Bridlepath Equine Center, JK Mechanical, Penn State Extension Food Science, Metzler Home Builders, and Brooke and Kim Rubincam.
“It was neat to see (Garden Spot FFA members) connect with the businesses and communicate what our expectations were and also asking them to bring in their expertise,” Ranck said.
Landon added, “I think one thing we did really well this year is we were responsive to what the kids were thinking. If we saw they needed
energy, we tried to give them something to build off of, and I think that helped to combat the weather.”
Fifth-graders were given a drawstring bag filled with safety items such as safety glasses, earplugs, vests, whistles, tape measures, and first aid kits. That was made possible by donations from Lowe’s, Benner Insurance, Landis Heritage Insurance, Peterbilt, Legacy Landscape, and YZ Lancaster.
Trent spearheaded that effort. “It was a whole new learning experience for me to go out and talk to companies and see how they were willing to commit to the community,” he said.
Ranck applauded her students. “As these guys are young leaders in our organization, they were tasked with their first event to plan for the FFA,” she said. “It was very neat to see them interact with our community and businesses and put a plan into action.”
Ashlynn noted she was pleased to see Garden Spot FFA members establish a bond with the younger students. “This is way to help them learn a little bit more about agriculture and introduce them to what FFA is so they know that could be an option for them later on in their lives. They can learn not only about agriculture and safety but also about leadership and growing in this organization.”

now-wife, Bethany, who is from Lancaster. After graduating in 2016, Hirschy took a job on the staff, of Grace Church, and he has been working there full time for more than nine years. “I started connecting with people and building relationships,” he said. “It was a place I felt welcomed and a place I could serve and use my gifts and be trained and discipled.”
Hirschy is grateful for his time with Grace Church lead pastor Adam Swift, as well as church elders and staff members and the deacon team. “They are just a great group of people who love the Lord,” he said. “It’s been an absolute joy to serve beside them.”
Hirschy said that God’s grace had confirmed the new direction he should go. “God has oftentimes used me in spite of myself, which He likes doing, and He gets the glory as He should,” Hirschy said. “Knowing myself and how God has wired me and knowing what the church was looking for in a lead pastor, Valley Grace was a match. It is what they were looking for and what we were looking for. We learned through this process to stop doubting Him. It seems like a really good fit for a long-term relationship.”
Dan Pritchett, who is retiring after a 40-year career at Valley Grace, will stay on to assist with Hirschy’s transition to the western Maryland church. Hirschy said serving as a lead pastor involves two aspects. “There is the relational side of things, which is infinitely important,” said Hirschy. “Then there’s also the organizational, structural part of it. A lot of things where I am hoping to be the most helpful is on that organizational side of things.” He added that he wants to provide leadership, along with clear and direct guidance.
He said he is eager to learn from the 40 years of wisdom and experience Pritchett has, while bringing a new energy and zeal to the position. Hirschy faces a similar situation to the one Pritchett encountered when he started at Valley Grace. Pritchett was married with two young daughters. Charlie and Bethany are the parents of two sons, Ezekiel, who is 4, and Titus, who is 1 and a half.
Hirschy said he felt fortunate to spend so much time at Grace Church. “We’re living in a culture where church is maligned by many,” he said. “What’s been really cool for my wife and me is that Grace Church at Willow Valley is just a really good place to be. The love of God abounds. The Gospel work that’s been happening here has been a joy to be a part of. We’re stepping into a place in Hagerstown where good things are happening, and that’s special for us. They are both groups of people who love Jesus and want others to know Him, whether that’s through the proclamation of the Gospel or the good things we do to love one another and our neighbors.”
