Three L-S Girl Scouts Earn Gold Awards

It’s a twin thing.
Hannah and Emily Reiter, twin sisters who recently graduated from Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School, were recently awarded Gold Awards, the highest
possible honor available to Girl Scouts.
Gold Awards are earned by high school girls who tackle pressing issues and lead projects that create meaningful, lasting change in their communities and beyond.
Both twins completed projects
centered around mental health, and both were implemented at the Willow Street campus of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC), where both students partially attended. Emily’s project focused on creating practical and easily accessible
brochures centered on student mental health and well-being, including test anxiety, growth mindset, mindfulness and coping strategies. It was titled “Mind Matters: Tools for Student Well-Being.”

In the area of equal rights, our country has made great strides. But the process continues; there is still much work to be done.
The brand-new Stevens & Smith Center sheds a wider, more colorful light on the issues of equality.
“The center explores the ongoing struggle to expand freedom, equality and democracy in America,” said Jason Traverse, the director of marketing and communications for the Stevens & Smith Center. “Through the stories of Stevens, Smith and countless others, visitors are invited to
consider how ordinary and extraordinary people alike have worked to advance these ideals, and how that work continues in America today.
“What makes the center special is that it doesn’t simply present history as something that happened long ago,” continued Traverse. “It asks visitors to consider how the questions that defined Stevens’ and Smith’s lives - questions about citizenship, equality, justice and democracy - continue to shape our lives today.”
Recently, the Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy opened its doors at 13-15 E. Vine St., Lancaster, to visitors.

around creating an interactive mental health bulletin board for student engagement and encouragement. The board allows students to take inspirational quotes with them, providing tangible reminders of positivity. She also developed “random acts of kindness” challenges to promote a supportive and compassionate school environment. It was titled “Mind Matters: Words of Encouragement.”
“We know a lot about it, so we wanted to just set awareness out,” Hannah said. “There’s a lot of students who don’t understand (mental health) and see it, so we wanted to put it out for them just to get an understanding about it.”
Girls Scouts are awarded
Bronze and Silver Awards through different projects before they become eligible for the Gold Award. Both Hannah and Emily both did their previous projects on mental health, as well, their mom, Eileen, said.
“Two kids that struggle with their mental health to begin with, and learning the coping skills, they wanted to share those resources out with other students and staff, too,” Eileen said.
Hannah and Emily have done almost everything together. Along with both being Girl Scouts, both played volleyball at L-S and both were awarded a James W. and Janice G. Frey Scholarship at graduation. They were both also students of the month in the LCCTC’s Medical Assistant program.
It does not stop there. Both plan to attend HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College in the fall to study nursing.
“You never have to ask for each other to be there,” Emily said.
“There’s like two minds, so we can get things done,” Hannah added.
The Reiters were not the only L-S students to earn the Girl Scouts’ top honor. Brynn Young, a 2025 L-S graduate, was also recently named as a Gold Award recipient.
Young, a bioengineering student at Northeastern University, centered her project around a book donation program that creates a dependable flow of books for children experiencing homelessness.
“I have always loved to read, so it’s just such an important thing to me to allow kids to have an outlet to read and something to call their own, such as a book,” Young said. “I feel like that was where I really stand for the inspiration for this project.”

Young’s project included placing six metal drop boxes throughout Lancaster County so people can donate books conveniently at all hours. The drop boxes, located in Lancaster city, East Petersburg, Salunga, Lititz, Manheim Township and Millersville, are all sponsored by local businesses.
At L-S, Young was the tennis team captain, National Honor Society president, Scrubs Club treasurer, Mini-THON treasurer and a member of Student Council.
Young’s mother and sister are also Girl Scouts.
“Girl Scouts has always just been a very nice community to go to for any age,” Young said. “I just feel like that has created a great foundation for me in creating leadership for other people.”
All three L-S winners were honored alongside other winners from the area at an award ceremony at Bucknell University in June.

Faith-Based Soccer Program Planned for Children
Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) of Lancaster County will offer a new Soccer Party Club to celebrate the World Cup coming to Philadelphia. Soccer Party Club is a 90-minute program that meets for one day. It is free for children ages 5 to 12 and will be held at various locations throughout Lancaster County. Housed in a multistory building, the Stevens & Smith Center tells its tales through exhibition galleries, original artifacts, educational programs and immersive experiences.
Visitors connect local history to national history through stories about the Underground Railroad, the Civil War, Reconstruction and the Christiana Resistance.
“Many people are surprised to learn that some of the most important stories in the fight against slavery and for equal rights happened right here in Lancaster,” said Traverse. “We want visitors to understand that Lancaster’s history is not a

An influential statesman from Lancaster County during the 1800s, Stevens actively assisted individuals in search of freedom through the Underground Railroad, and many of his ideals helped form national laws. Steven’s longtime confidante, Smith was a successful businessperson and property owner who shared Stevens’ home.
“History helps us understand how we arrived at the present moment,” said Traverse. “It gives us perspective, context and a deeper understanding of the choices individuals and communities have made. Preserving history allows us to learn from the past while inspiring future generations to engage thoughtfully with the challenges of their own time.”

Grants Awarded for Native Plantings
The Giant Company, known locally as Giant and Martin’s, in partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, has announced the 21 recipients of its 2026 Healing the Planet grants. A total of $100,000 was given to support projects across the company’s operating areas in Pennsylvania.
Among the grant recipients were the 18th Wonder Improvement Association in Reading, the Lititz Public Library, and the York County Industrial Development Authority.
Since 2021, Giant has partnered with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to offer over $1.4 million in Healing the Planet grants
to recipients to help fund projects that connect communities with green spaces; protect and improve local waterways and water resources; prevent, reduce, and recover food waste; and support native plantings and habitat restoration.

Historic Rock Ford Posts Lectures
Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, has planned three programs, all of which will take place in the Langmuir Education Room, located on the first floor of the Rock Ford barn. Tickets to the programs may be purchased at www.historicrockford.org/ special-events.
“The Revolution’s Last Men: The Soldiers Behind the Photographs,” a presentation by Don N. Hagist, will be held on Wednesday, July 15, at 6:30 p.m. Hagist will present information on six Revolutionary War veterans. These veterans were photographed and interviewed for a book published in 1864, but the biographies were garbled and distorted, containing information that ranged from inaccurate to implausible. Now the military careers of these men have been researched in detail using a wide range of primary sources. The result is a new perspective on the actual service of these soldiers, from enlistment to discharge, along with new details of their relatively quiet post-war lives.
Hagist is managing editor of Journal of the American Revolution, and his historical studies focus on presenting an accurate picture
of individual soldiers and their families, especially those of the British army who served in America. He was a consultant for the PBS documentary “The American Revolution” produced by Ken Burns and has written several books, including “Noble Volunteers: The British Soldiers Who Fought the American Revolution” and “The Revolution’s Last Men: The Soldiers Behind the Photographs.” He is also an engineer for a medical device manufacturer and writes for several syndicated cartoonists. The presentation will be approximately two hours in length.

“Buff & Blue: How George Washington Fashioned the Revolution” will be offered on Sunday, July 19, at 2 p.m. Fashion designer and historian Chloe Chapin will share the history of the iconic buff and blue color scheme and its lasting impact on American style. The color scheme was used by George Washington in designing his own military uniform, and within 15 years men across America, England, and France were copying his look. In her forthcoming book, “Suitable: The Sartorial Revolution and the Fashioning of Modern Men,” Chapin investigates the materiality, manufacture, and meaning behind men’s suits between the American Revolution and the Civil War. Chapin holds a doctorate from Harvard. Previously, she costumed rock musicals on Broadway.
Visitors may park in the area located behind the barn. Prior to the lecture, attendees may visit the Snyder Gallery and the 2026 Focus Exhibit. The Snyder Gallery closes at 4 p.m.
Karin Wulf will present “Lineage: Genealogy and the Power of Connection in Early America” on Sunday, July 19, at 5 p.m.
The lecture is based upon Wulf’s book of the same name and explores how genealogy was a powerful force in 18th-century America, shaping society, law, and identity for all people, not just the elite. The book argues that family records, created in diverse forms from documents to artifacts, were crucial for individuals and institutions to claim status; define freedom, especially in relation to slavery; and navigate legal and social structures, connecting personal emotion with political power.
Wulf is the director and librarian of the John Carter Brown Library and professor of history at Brown University. A historian of early America focused on gender, family, and politics, she writes widely for both public and academic audiences about history, the worlds of research and scholarship, and libraries and archives. She serves on a variety of nonprofit boards, is involved in planning for the United States’ 250th anniversary celebration, and is a vice president of the American Historical Association.
