Foundation Provides Families With a Chance To Feel Normal

Lynn Walker was worried.

In 2013, after her son Caleb had undergone his third brain surgery, a friend sent the family away for an extended weekend trip to Ocean City, N.J. Caleb had been gone for more than two hours on a beach bike expedition, and Lynn was getting anxious. “Caleb comes bursting through the door and says, ‘I know what I’m going to do! I’m going to start a foundation!’” Lynn recalled.

Caleb explained that while biking by the ocean he had felt normal for the first time in four years. “He said, ‘When you get away from everything else, you get to feel normal. This is what I want to give people,’” said Lynn.

For the last 11 years, the organization Caleb formed, A Week Away Foundation, has been providing

families with weeklong vacations. “Our mission is to provide respite weeks for families that are battling a life-threatening illness, thereby enabling them to come back refreshed from some time away so they can re-engage and continue to fight their disease,” said Lynn, who is the director of the registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

There are no age limitations for people going on the trip, which is for a patient diagnosed by a medical doctor and undergoing treatment, as well as family members and friends who have been caring for the patient since the diagnosis.

The site of the respites must be drivable and within a 500-mile radius of A Week Away’s coverage

area, which is made up of Adams, Berks, Bucks, Chester, Cumberland, Delaware, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh,

A local Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) boys’ basketball program is playing its cards right.

With teams mostly made up of players from LancasterLebanon League schools, the Lancaster Aces are entering the summer on a heater.

At the East Coast Super Regional Showdown in King of

Prussia on May 24 to 25, the Aces’ 16U team finished first and the 17U team placed second. Both squads will participate in the AAU World Championship on Thursday, July 3, to Sunday, July 6, at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando. “The 17-under team did that last year for the first time, and the boys really loved it,” said Abby Tillie, who operates the Lancaster Aces with her husband, Darren.

Good is universal, timeless and objective. Because it mirrors God, good is good.

The Lancaster County Women for Good (LCWG) group knows some things about the concept of doing good. It’s part of the all-volunteer organization’s mission, purpose and reason for existing.

“We use that word a lot, ‘good,’” said Anna Horst, the chairperson of the five-member board that oversees LCWG’s operations. “It’s in our name. I think it’s safe to say our connections and providing nonprofits with resources is part of the good we aim to do. I think there are a number of nonprofits in Lancaster County who have amazing missions. They’re real people trying to help real people. They are problems that a majority of us would agree need to be solved. Maybe we need to be more clear by what we mean by ‘good.’”

LCWG, which does not operate from a physical office or building, conducts more than 15 membership events each year, including one on the second Wednesday of each month, at various locations throughout the county. Those events revolve around the process of providing grants generated through membership dues and social fundraisers to local nonprofits.

“We have a shared purpose to benefit others outside of our group,” said Horst, a resident of Lititz. “The mission is a unifying thing. The women of the group are generous and genuinely curious. It’s special to get together with a group of

It was a highly successful spring for the Aces. The 17U squad won the title at the Mid-Atlantic Super Showdown in West Chester on April 5 and 6. Both Aces teams won the Zero Gravity Empire State Showdown title in New York and excelled at the Philly Clash in Oaks.

The Lancaster teams have not needed an ace up their sleeves. “I think the success is because of a lot of heart, determination, and willpower to give all their effort,” said Darren, who is the head coach of both squads. He also credits his assistant coach, Elijah Robinson Sr.

The Aces 17U roster is composed of Solanco High School students Kayden Tillie, Isaiah Wright, and Kiran Ludgate; Hayden Martin from Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S); Elijah Robinson Jr. from Octorara; Julien Severino from Penn Manor; Luke Waas from Cocalico; Brandon Bromfield from Church Farm; and Angelo Martarano from Manheim Township.

Lancaster’s 16U squad is

Garrett Wagner and Sam Harper of Solanco; Lebanon’s Alec Wolf, Elliot Schappel, Robert Santiago, and Daryan Rodriguez; Micheal Leonardo of McCaskey; and Cody Stoltzfus, who is a homeschool student.

The Aces usually practice on Wednesdays and Fridays at Carter & MacRae Elementary School in Lancaster. Tournaments take them all over the East Coast, including South Carolina, Florida, and New Jersey. “That helps us get a lot better, so if we get to college, we’re used to that environment,” Kayden said.

His dad, Darren, praises Kayden’s competitiveness. “He’s a leader, very vocal on the court which is always needed,” said Darren. “He’s a solid rock player. It’s not always about scoring. He’ll do the defensive work also. He’s a team player at the end of the day.”

Kayden and Isaiah have played in the same backcourt for many years. “I’ve coached Isaiah for quite some time,” said Darren.

“He’s like family to us. He’s a quick player, and he likes to be a leader, also. He’s a floor general, and he has heart. He wants to win, and he wants to better himself.”

Garrett lauded the Aces’ culture. “It has helped with my confidence and development as a player and a teammate,” he said.

Sam added, “It’s fun because we’ve been playing together all these years. It helps my try new moves and stay ready for school ball.”

Hayden is a rising senior at L-S.

A chance meeting with Kayden set the stage for joining the Aces.

“I was playing at the Y (Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA) and they had a tryout, and I just happened to be there. Ever since then, it’s been great.”

Darren stated, “Hayden is a great guy, also. He’s very colorful. He’s

emotional in a way, and he always uses his emotions positively on the court. He always hustles. He’s a grit player. He’ll get in there and play against big guys, even though the matchup may not be favorable to him.”

Julien is in his third season with the Aces. “He’s one of the nicest kids I’ve known,” Darren said. “He brings a lot of positivity to the team. He’s always smiling and plays with heart. These guys give their all out on the court, and I can’t ask for more than that.”

A 2025 graduate of Penn Manor, Julien will continue running his pressure-washing business while beginning an internship with state Sen. Scott Martin.

Lynn said. “It’s like living in a cement mixer, and they never, ever get a break. If we can take them out of that world, that reality, for a week and give them a stress-free experience at no cost for them, we can buy time. And if we have time, we can give God and science a chance to work.”

Before he was diagnosed with brain cancer after having a seizure, Caleb was a seemingly healthy senior at Lampeter-Strasburg High School two months before graduation with plans to study pre-med and wrestle in college.

He was briefly paralyzed following the first of his six brain surgeries but bounced back and was able to run and ride a bicycle.

Lynn recalls a visit to the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania when Caleb was 18. “He put his head on my shoulder and started crying,” she said. “That wasn’t like him at all.”

Caleb had noticed a young mother holding a tiny infant and said, “We’re so blessed. We have our family and our faith. Who helps them?”

Lynn said, “That was the day the seed (for the foundation) was planted. On the boardwalk, it sprouted.”

When he realized he would not have time to graduate from Millersville, Caleb took on a variety of jobs in the city to raise money for A Week Away.

The Light the Tree campaign is one of the foundation’s big fundraisers. In 2014, Caleb arranged for an ill child to hit the button

that turned on the lights on the Christmas tree in Penn Square. In October, he suffered 40 seizures in one day, and doctors told him he likely had less than a month to live. “You have to get me to my fundraiser,” Caleb responded. He survived long enough to see the foundation grant its first respite and deliver a speech during the tree-lighting ceremony. Caleb died days later on Dec. 3, 2014, after becoming unconscious while writing thank you letters. It was one week before his 24th birthday.

Lynn keeps a collage on her desk featuring photos of some of the businesses and community members who have helped the foundation raise more than $2.5 million. “It’s a reminder that so many people have been with us for 11 years,” she said.

Lancaster County Motors Subaru sponsors the annual August golf tournament, which is already sold out. Members 1st Federal Credit Union, Speedwell Construction, and Hess Auctioneers are also major contributors. “My favorite donation is someone who gives $2 a month,” Lynn said. “That always puts a smile on my face.”

There are many avenues to help A Week Away, including the donation of a property that can host respites. “God has blessed this organization. He has taken care of it,” Lynn said. “(The organization) always needs money, but the best way to help us is to give us referrals. We want to help people.”

For more information about the A Week Away Foundation, go to www.aweekaway.org.

“It’s Caleb’s legacy,” said Lynn, who keeps a quote in her office that reads, “I’ve not heard your voice in years, but my heart has conversations with you every day.”

“This is my way of being able to support his dreams,” Lynn added. “There’s a little selfish part, too. It puts me in touch with people who loved him and who he loved.”

his first season with the Aces. “It’s been amazing,” he said. “It feels like family.”

Darren said, “Elijah is taking on the challenge of playing up on 17U team. He’s a very good guy and always looking for an opportunity to come in and better himself. He’s a workhorse and a tough guy.”

The Lancaster Aces organization was founded by Mike Schmelder, and it was originally intended for at-risk youths. At Schmelder’s request, the Tillies joined the group at the end of 2021. “Solanco didn’t

have an AAU program,” Darren said. “Our son (Kayden) had gone into basketball head deep, so we decided it would be a great opportunity to do that.”

The Tillies said they are grateful for the sponsorship of Hayden’s parents, Scott and Amber Martin, and Amber’s business, Woo-Cat. “They have been amazing,” Abby said. “They both do so much.”

women and have purpose.”

LCWG provides one grant to a Lancaster County nonprofit in each quarter of the year. LCWG members nominate worthy nonprofits and a general vote of the membership determines three finalists. After the participating nonprofits make presentations about the merits of their missions, LCWG votes again to determine that quarter’s grant recipient.

Typically, the grants range between $4,800 and $7,100. Since its inception in August of 2022, LCWG has awarded 10 grants to county nonprofits like SWAN (Scaling Walls a Note at a Time), Aevidum, Phoenix Assistance Dogs of Central Pennsylvania, Hope Inspire Love, Clare House, Arch Street Center, Aaron’s Acres, North Star Initia -

tive and Power Packs Project, totaling $62,000.

“The only common thread with the grants is that they go to nonprofits serving the local Lancaster County area,” said Horst. “Their services have to directly impact Lancaster County. We’ve also provided awareness. I feel like we strengthen the fabric of Lancaster County by contributing to its resilience. We feel like the nonprofits of Lancaster County are already doing good work. We believe the people closest to the communities are best equipped to know the needs.”

Currently, LCWG’s active membership is made up of 96 women who work or live in Lancaster County. They hail from all parts of the county.

“They are women who want to be part of something bigger

than themselves,” said Horst. “They like that this is a very accessible way to volunteer in Lancaster County. It’s a way to connect with other like-minded women. They all want to see our community thriving and flourishing. We try to make an inclusive environment where everyone’s voices are heard. They all feel like they need to do something. (The grant) is a democratic process.”

“My favorite part is the connection with a diverse group of women,” she added. “But they all have this drive for working together for the community. I like seeing the impact. Pooling our resources, time and skills to benefit Lancaster County feels really good.”

LCWG was established in August of 2022 through an

online social giving platform, Grapevine. LCWG has brought together dozens of Lancaster County women who were already looking for ways to give back.

“(Grapevine) reached out to start a group local to Lancaster County,” said Horst. “They sort of initiated the group, and the locals drove it from there. We have a good group of leaders who are committed to the cause. I think we’re becoming a more confident organization. The members can know what to expect.”

“The camaraderie is something special,” Horst continued. “A lot of the women enjoy the friendships they are making. A lot of these women are business owners, so we network and support each other.” For additional information, go to www.lancowomenforgood.com.
