L-S Staff, Students Say Goodbye to Maya
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Every dog has its day.
For Maya, that day was May 27.
Maya is retiring as full-time facility dog at Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School, and the 10-and-a-half-year-old Labrador retriever was given a sentimental sendoff replete with balloons, photographs, a guest book for students to sign, and, of course, plenty of treats.
“I feel like she has uplifted the spirits of everyone,” said school psychologist Kristin Glass. “She

just walks down the hallway, and kids smile. They can be coming in having a really bad day, and all of a sudden, they are excited and feeling a lot better.”
Glass stated that Maya provides a soothing presence. “I think for a lot of kids, it’s just having that calm comfort in the classroom that brings the stress level down,” she said. “(Maya) specifically works with a couple students who have had panic attacks and a lot of stress and anxiety, and she helps alleviate that so they can get back to class and function for the rest of the day.”
Maya has visited English, biology, and special education classes. “She has a schedule just like students,” Glass said. “It’s a little different every day, unlike

theirs. She gets out and about.”
Maya spends her nights at the home of special education consultant Gerald Kaufhold, and Glass is her primary handler while she is in the building. Glass gets emotional when discussing Maya’s impact.
“I have loved working with her these past nine years,” said Glass. “She has made my job so much easier. I’m a school psy chologist, and kids come in and there’s an instant rapport. She
helps de-stress me as well. She’s very good at knowing when I’m anxious, so she helps me with that. Seeing how much she has touched the lives of students here and has helped kids, I am going to horribly miss her.”
Glass noted that Maya will

The Strasburg Community
Parks Foundation is celebrating 10 years of concerts in the amphitheater by bringing back some of its top crowd-drawing acts on four summer Saturday nights.
Sounds of Strasburg Free Concerts will be held at 6:30 p.m. on June 21, July 12, July 26, and Aug. 9 at Strasburg Community Park, 151 Precision Ave., Strasburg.

It’s said that faith will move mountains.
Mountain Conquerors participants are neither required to move a mountain nor expected to scale one on their own.
Instead they will have an opportunity to embark on a potentially life-altering adventure.

Mountain Conquerors is an organization founded in 2010 by pastor Matt Kroll. “It is an outdoor camp that teaches
leadership skills, life skills, and grows character,” he said. “It provides the experience of a lifetime. That’s our motto, and that’s what we do.”
Until this year, the expedition, which is free thanks to sponsors, was only available for boys ages 13 to 16. MCg, Mountain Conquerors Girls, will have a separate trip for girls in the same age range. Applicants must be residents of Lancaster County.
The inaugural MCg, which will be led by Kari Stauffer, will take place Monday, June 30, to

Foundation To Offer Medical Scholarships

For nearly 35 years, the Lancaster Medical Society Foundation has presented scholarships to medical students. This year, the foundation is opening the pool to include applicants not just from Lancaster County, but also those with a strong connection to the Lancaster community. Any student who is accepted or continuing a medical degree at an accredited medical school and has connections to Lancaster County may apply. Applicants must also demonstrate academic achievement, exhibit leadership and motivation, show an interest in meeting societal needs, and desire to potentially serve Lancaster County residents as a future physician.
Supported by the Lancaster County medical community, including local hospitals, group practices, individual medical society members, businesses, and individuals, the foundation has awarded over $300,000 in funds since its establishment in 1991. Applications must be postmarked by Tuesday, July 1. The awards will be announced in September. For more information or to obtain an application, visit www.lancastermedicalsoci ety.org or call 717-393-9588.

the psychologist said. “She will lay across students and lick their faces. She does things that would be really awkward if I did that.”
L-S freshman Zameer Taylor and junior Phoenix Garabo took time from their lunch period to pose for photos with Maya. “She makes your mood much happier even if you’re down,” Zameer said. “She motivates you. And she comforts you in multiple ways. Maya made my first high school year more calm even though I was stressed out. I’m sad because I’m going to miss her a lot.”
Phoenix said, “I loved having her around because she was my mini support animal. She’s just a very cuddly girl, and everyone is going to miss her.”
Maya came from Susquehanna Service Dogs to the school district in October 2016. She became weary from traveling between buildings, so she became the high school’s facility dog. “Everybody else said, ‘Wait! Where did the dog go? Why does the high school have her?’” Glass said.
Maya was such a success that now every L-S school has its own facility dog. “She has really changed my life working with her, and I have seen the change she has made here,” said Glass.
Maya will not spend her days munching on kibble by the pool. “She is retiring from full-time service, but she still likes to work,” said Glass. “We will let her come in when she wants but stay in the guidance office where she can assist kids that really need her services. She can help students with stress and anxiety. She’s really good at that.”

It may be a dog-eat-dog world, but Maya is patiently mentoring her successor, Higgins, who lives with Glass in the evenings. “She has been showing him the
ropes and showing him what to do,” said Glass. “They have different personalities, and Higgins will reach kids maybe (Maya) didn’t have a
huge impact on. I’m really going to miss the impact she had, because she does things I’ve not seen any other dogs do.”

“Our job is to provide an experience for these kids that will last a lifetime and get them plugged in, if they’re not already plugged in, to a healthy structure,” said Kroll, who is the program’s coordinator and the

leader of the boys’ camp.
“Whether that’s church. Whether that’s a teen center. That’s the goal. We don’t want to reinvent the wheel of the structure.”
Staff members, who are all volunteers, will lead campers on practice hikes before taking a backpacking

Free Concerts
It is recommended that visitors bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating. No coolers or alcohol will be permitted. If it rains, the concert will be postponed and every effort will be made to reschedule for a future date, said Patti Creighton, a member of the parks foundation board who organizes the events with help from a team of other volunteers.
The series will start with Swing Night on June 21, featuring Flipside Big Band, which is composed of members of the Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band. Instructors will provide dancing lessons, and then Flipside will play a full set.
Local businesses Robino’s 717 and Joe on the Go Coffee Co will sell food and beverages.
On July 12, Studio Two, a tribute act of the Beatles, will perform. Studio Two has headlined numerous ticketed shows in New

England and tours during the summer. “It’s a topnotch, high-quality show that residents can see for free here, which is pretty nice,” Creighton said.
Walk-O Taco and Joe on the Go Coffee Co will be the vendors.
On July 26, Steven Courtney & the Suitcase Musicians will grace the Strasburg Community Park stage. Courtney is a renowned children’s musician who hosted a local television show, The Steven Courtney Channel. “The show was entertaining for adults, as well,” Creighton said. “I watched it before I had kids.”
Creighton noted that Courtney and his band will perform a blended set.
“He’ll play some children’s tunes, so if you bring your kiddos, they’ll be entertained, but he also plays old-time rock covers and songs that appeal to people of all ages,” she said. “He has

a longstanding reputation of being a great entertainer, so we’re happy to have him here.”
Stoney’s Burgers and Fries and Penny’s Ice Cream Truck will sell food.
On Aug. 9, award-winning Nashville recording
Band will bring its brand of county-rock music. Hailing from Berks County, The Jess Zimmerman Band has played along the NASCAR circuit.
“They’re just wonderful,

personable, and entertaining,” said Creighton.
Gio’s Smokin’ Grill & Sweet Treats will sell food during the final performance of the season.

Creighton is happy with the star-studded lineup. “We try to reach different interests and hit different genres,” she said. “(The concert series has) grown and grown and grown over the years, and it’s been wonderful to see.”
Go to www.strasburg communitypark.org or email soundsofstrasburg concertseries@gmail.com for more information. “We are always looking for new ideas and suggestions for future acts,” said Creighton.

In addition to donations from community members, Sounds of Strasburg Free Concerts is sponsored by Alere Family Health, Joe on the Go Coffee Co, Red Truck Heating & Cooling, Strasburg Dental Group, Willoughby & Associates Inc., SERVPRO, Strasburg Scooter Tours, Bachman Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, and SoundFocus.
The Strasburg Community Parks Foundation, which is responsible for the upkeep of the park, will accept donations to be used for maintenance.
“Obviously, I am a little biased, but personally, I

think live music is one of the best ways to bring a community together,” said Creighton, who is a music teacher at Lampeter Elementary School. “Every age group from (toddlers) to people in their 90s can enjoy music in a relaxed atmosphere while the sun is setting. It’s a beautiful chance to experience nature and music together, which I think go hand in hand.”
“People reaching, people touching / A real celebration / Waiting for us all / If we want it, really want it / Can you dig it? Yes, I can / And I’ve been waiting such a long time / For the day.”

Book Discussion and Forest Walk Set
The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group will host a book discussion and forest walk at Lancaster County Central Park on Wednesday, June 25, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The book discussion will take place at 6:30 p.m. in
the auditorium of the park’s Environmental Center, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. The featured book will be “Forest Walking: Discovering the Trees and Woodlands of North America” by Jane Billinghurst and Peter Wohlleben. The book shares the authors’ experiences and observations from visiting various types of forests around the country.
After the discussion, a Lancaster County Parks naturalist will guide participants on a forest walk to study the trees and woodlands around the park. There is a fee. The program is open to people age 16 and older, and participants must register by noon on Tuesday, June 24, by visiting www.lancaster countyparks.org, clicking on “Online Program Registration” on the right side of the page, and searching for “Book Discussion and Forest Walking.” For more information, email janedruce@gmail.com.

in Mountain Conquerors in 2020 and is now one of the trek’s leaders. “I learned skills and that you can overcome things with God helping you,” he said. “I had never experienced anything like that before.” Reed said he teaches younger hikers to embrace the things they can’t control and take on the challenges.”

Mountain Conquerors is designed to test one’s mindset. “You don’t know what character you have until you put it under pressure,” Kroll said. “Are you going to whine? Are you going to quit? You start hiking up a hill; your true character comes out. We’re good with that because now we have something to deal with.”

The pastor cited Galatians 5, which includes the allegory of the Fruit of the Holy Spirit and characteristics such as patience and kindness. “We’re looking at all those things, the staff included,” Kroll said. “We all need to grow, and we want to challenge each other and encourage each other and hold each other accountable. By changing your thinking and the words you speak, you can change the outcome. The kids begin to overcome the obstacles they didn’t think they could ever overcome. These are life skills you can teach in a classroom but can’t experience unless you really do it.”

Mountain Conquerors camp provides challenges that test the mind and body. Traditionally, on the first day of the boys’ camp, participants are instructed to plant a flag after 90 minutes of hiking. The following day, campers get a workout on the ropes course before going on the same hike as the day before. They are challenged to beat their time from day one. “There’s never been a year where they haven’t beaten their mark,” said Kroll.
At the end of the week, campers must trek one by one up a steep incline that Kroll refers to as Challenge Hill. Until that point, everything is done as a team. “It’s great to have a support network, but there are many times in life when it’s just you, your hurdle, and God,” Kroll said. “I’ve seen some amazing things in this camp. From the beginning to the end, the transformation of the kids is pretty cool.”
