Kim Smith Named L-S Teacher of the Year
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Kim Smith’s story is one of resolve and resilience.
It’s a story of sorrow and surprise, music, and moments.
It’s a testament to what a person can accomplish after seeing empathy in the eyes of second-graders and forging forward in the face of tragedy while being backed by the compassion of a community.
It’s a success story.
Being named Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) School District 2024-25 Teacher of the Year isn’t the end of Kim’s story, but it is an opportunity to pause for reflection and appreciation.
Kim, a second-grade teacher at Lampeter Elementary School, said she is often asked what makes her different than other teachers. Her son, Ryan, who was a basketball star at L-S, died of leukemia four and a half years ago. That experience caused Kim to see things in a new light. “I
have a lot of resilience to be able to come back into a (teaching) position after such a big loss,” she said.
Ryan was a beloved member of the L-S community, and Kim cherishes his memory daily. “All the kids in my classroom know who Ryan was and that his basketball number was 5,” she said.
“All the parents know who Ryan was. It’s pretty amazing how empathetic kids can be at such a young age. I’m glad to be able to share that with them and allow them to see my resilience. If something happens in their life, hopefully I’ve modeled for them that they can find a pathway to move forward. Even though you’re not going to be the same person, it’s really important that you find a path to move forward.”
Kim said she now has a better understanding of what students may be going through. “I realize that everybody has hard days,” she said. “You never know what kids are bringing to school. It has

Leo - Leadership, Experience, Opportunity - stands for service. Leo means doing the right thing all the time.
Leo is a lion.
“It’s important to be a part of your community and give back to create change in your community,” said Jarrett Falduts, who’s a Bareville, Leola, Leacock Lion and the adviser for the recently formed Conestoga Valley Leo Club. “Just being a person who gives. It’s really just God’s work.
You have to reach down and help people out. The impact it creates for yourself and others is unlike anything else.”
It’s been a few months since Falduts; his son, Geno, a sophomore at Conestoga Valley (CV) High School; and his daughter, Sydney, a seventh-grader at CV’s Gerald G. Huesken Middle School, pooled their talents to form the Conestoga Valley Leo Club. The club is sponsored and supported by the Bareville, Leola, Leacock Lions Club, but it is not officially affiliated

Whatever floats your boat.
That was the challenge facing LampeterStrasburg (L-S) High School science students during the annual Cardboard Boat Regatta, which was held May 27 at the LampeterStrasburg YMCA’s outdoor pool.
AP biology teacher Erica White said the event is an example of L-S science teachers encouraging their students to take academic risks. “Don’t be afraid to fail,” she said. “Take the risk. The payoff can be really fun.”
The regatta is the culmination of a twoweek project. “We offer several AP science

Lampeter United Methodist Church, 1101 Village Road, Lancaster, will present “Coral Reef Quest” vacation Bible school (VBS) on Monday, June 16, through Thursday, June 19, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
This year, lessons will be taught by a seahorse named Sally and her two friends Carlos and Jeri, who witness biblical activities in and on the water and then swim back to discuss them with Sally’s grandpa. All
lessons will be enacted on a stage that has been transformed into an ocean using black light technology.
Youths will rotate through story, art and sports stations and get a snack each night. On June 19, families will be invited to join their children as they rotate through the stations.
To register, visit www .lampeterumc.com.

courses,” White said. “At the end of the year, after all the college board exams are over, the kids get into small groups, which include a student from AP chemistry, AP biology, and AP physics. They have to design a boat out of cardboard and other specs that will survive a race to the other side of the Olympic pool and back without sinking.”
Teachers make recommendations, but the rest is left to the students. “There’s a lot that goes into it,” White said. “They have to also know where their water line will rise to, so they don’t sink. They have to give us their calculations. They have to give us the reasoning behind the shape of their boat. What’s the best boat for survival, basically. And then who is the fastest.”

opened my eyes to knowing that there are children struggling in different ways and I have to find ways to engage them and get them to open up.”
Kim’s students played a big part in notifying her she had been selected Teacher of the Year. She was picking up her students from music class and was greeted at the door by instructor Patricia Creighton. “I walked inside, and the students had hand-clappers they were flapping back and forth,” Kim recalled. “I saw my principal (Michele Westphal) and (school district communications director) Anne Harnish were there, and they all started singing to me. I had no idea what was happening. No clue.”
Students serenaded Kim with customized lyrics to the tune of a song they knew: “Dr. Seuss, We Love You.”

Open to kids ages 3 thru Grade 5, plus there is a class for students of all ages who are disabled.

“The students then brainstormed things they love about Mrs. Smith to replace the lyrics to be about her, and made their ideas fit the tune,” Creighton explained.

A sample of the lyrics: Mrs. Smith, we love you / Mrs. Smith, we really do! / Mrs. Smith, we love you, doodley doo doo doo.
You’re kind and helpful and caring / Reading and math is fun with you / You’re happy, nice, and thoughtful / We are thankful for you!

“I looked at my principal, and she said, ‘Congratulations! You got Teacher of the Year,’” said Kim. “I was just really surprised.”
Westphal stated, “Mrs. Smith is a professional, compassionate, resilient, and inspiring educator who creates a classroom environment where students feel safe, supported, and empowered to grow as learners. She advocates tirelessly for her students, collaborating with parents and colleagues to ensure that every child’s needs are met and that every decision is made with their best interests at heart.”

A 1989 graduate of L-S, Kim concluded her 26th year of teaching, with 20 of them in the L-S School District.
Her late mother, Beverly Bjornson, was a teacher, and Kim said she has always loved being around children. “(Teaching) was something that was always in the back of my mind,” she said. “Once I decided to go to college (at West Virginia University), I thought I would pursue education and see if I like it. I did enjoy it. I loved the classes.”
Kim began her career as a

with the Conestoga Valley School District.
The Conestoga Valley Leo Club conducts meetings online at 6 p.m. on the second Sunday of every month and engages in community-building altruistic activities, not unlike its parent organization. Included in the monthly meetings are guest speakers, leadership-building exercises and the development and planning of upcoming events.
“For me, as the adviser, I’m giving kids an opportunity to see things they may never have seen before in their lives,” said Jarrett. “It’s a leadership development group for giving back to the community. I want to show kids how to work with the community. We want to motivate people to be philanthropists. This club is about giving back and getting things moving.”
The Conestoga Valley Leo Club is currently made up of 18 students ages 13 to 16 who attend school in the Conestoga Valley, Warwick and Lampeter-Strasburg districts. Many of them are friends of Geno and Sydney or close relatives.
“They’re like the top kids in their grades,” said Jarrett. “They’re athletes. They’re very involved. A lot have part-time jobs. They’re already very busy. But to take something else on means they want to be better people. They’re super kids who will probably go to college and end up making a difference in the world.”

“Being part of the Leo Club reminds me of how lucky I am,” said Jackson Poole, a sophomore at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. “I appreciate what I have, and it makes me want to help others.”
Among the events that the Conestoga Valley Leo Club has been involved with since its founding are a banquet celebrating Lions and Leo Club presidents at Yoder’s in New Holland; an Easter egg hunt for Arc of Lancaster clients at Leola Community Park; and a regular Bareville, Leola, Leacock Lions Club induction ceremony.
In addition to helping to build job résumés and providing valuable experience, volunteering can serve as a way for getting kids outside and off screens.
“It’s really up to the kids what they want to do,” said Jarrett. “We want to help out with Lions Club events. There are a lot of kids who don’t know what Lions Club is about. We just want them to get their hands dirty. We want them to see what Lions do. We want them to learn about things that are already in place in the community.”
“They’re learning how to be leaders in their community,” added Jarrett. “They’re creating a better world for themselves and others.”

fourth-grade teacher in Manheim Township for six years before taking time to raise her three children. She then worked as a reading specialist and has spent the last 11 years in the classroom. “Teaching in second grade, all the kids still love school,” joked Kim, who has earned a master’s degree and reading specialist certification from Millersville University. She still gets a thrill from watching her students learn. “One of the things I really enjoy is when kids have those ‘light-bulb moments,’” Kim said. “You work so hard to get them to understand a concept, and finally the light bulb goes on for them, and they’re like, ‘Ahh, I get it.’ That, for me, is so rewarding.”
Her methods are constructive and uncomplicated. “I like to engage the students as much as
possible, trying to make learning hands-on and trying to make it as real life as it can possibly be, so the kids can try to make connections with everything that we do,” Kim said. “I try hard to incorporate fun ways to get their attention, and I try to honor every child as an individual and try to build on what they came with, knowing that every child is so different and every child’s needs are different, as well.” Kim does not enjoy being the center of attention, but she is honored to be singled out from a group of talented teachers. “I feel like any single teacher could be nominated as Teacher of the Year,” she said. “We have such a dedicated, professional staff that always puts the best interests of the kids at heart. So to be recognized is a little bit humbling.”

She noted that students learn about collaboration and communication. “There is a lot of communication (needed) because they are in different science classes, and they are juniors and seniors,” said White. “They might only see each other one time during the day to work on the project. So they learn a lot about time management to make sure they hit all their requirements and deadlines.”
The teacher also expects students to understand the science behind their design. “They can pull from a lot of cross-curricular ideas and realize it does apply to real life,”

said White. “It’s adventurous.”
Participants are permitted to use cardboard and tape, as well as permanent markers to decorate their vessels. Winners receive trophies, which are also constructed with cardboard and duct tape. “They are extremely valuable in this world,” White noted.
The Franklin entry - Parker Reinhart, Saaketh Vermuri, Callie Reynolds, Keira Smecker, and Jack Kirchner - survived both heats and was the last team standing. “We had multiple layers of cardboard
layers on the bottom and three layers on the side as well.”
Callie took part in the regatta last spring and passed some intel on to her teammates. “We made it wider this year, with more surface area,” she said. That helped Callie and Keira distribute their weight evenly. “If you put all your weight it the middle of the boat, it will start to fold and break there,” Callie said. “We put most of our weight on the sides of the boat, and I think that worked pretty well.”

Keira and Callie piloted the boat and used an unorthodox method of rowing as Callie got a little overexuberant and inadvertently conked Keira in the noggin several times. “I got whacked in the head, but I don’t know if that’s a strategy,” said Keira.
Whatever they were doing worked as the duo rowed to victory. “I was pretty surprised,” Keira said. “We were happy. I turned around and saw all the boats sinking, and I thought, ‘We might make it!’”
The team made up of Asher Reno, CJ Grandizio, Kaitlin Churchill, Addie Rodriguez, and Owens Maines won Best in Show with its

Mario Kart theme, and the watercraft also proved to be seaworthy. “It was very big,” Asher said. “I had to take it home and work on it over the weekend, but we got it done. The actual calculations weren’t hard, but keeping it together was very difficult. I’m happy it was able to float, and it made it across the pool.”
Team Mayflower - Hayden Nebel, Dom Brown, Rylee Diller, Evan Girdharry, and Avary Weiler - won the Sea Shanty Spirit award for its pre-race chant.
Hammerhead Shark - Brynn Young, Isaiah Jones, Danny Jones, and Riley Lefever - got the Titanic award, although there were no icebergs to be blamed for their sinking.
