Chicken Barbecue Will Support West Lampeter Fair By Dayna M. Reidenouer
West Lampeter Fair directors hope to tear down the food pavilion and build a new structure for the milkshake, burger, pork barbecue, and soup stands in time for the three-day event in September. A chicken barbecue sale on June 13 will help to raise money for the project.
Life looks a lot different for many people right now, but one thing has not changed: The smell of chicken barbecue has been filling the air on Saturday mornings in several municipalities. That pattern will continue in Lampeter on Saturday, June 13. “We thought with the way everything’s going, everyone would want a break from cooking,” West Lampeter Fair board chair Don Welk said when announcing the fair’s annual chicken barbecue will be held as planned on June 13 at the fairgrounds, 851 Village Road, Lampeter. “Buy some extra halves so you don’t have to cook later on,” he suggested. The barbecue sale always takes place on the second Saturday in June, and Welk estimated that it has been held for
Sweet Pea Plants Virtual Garden More than 10 years ago, Stephanie Paige Cole, founder of Sweet Pea Project, an organization that offers comfort and support to families that have experienced the death of a baby, and her board members began holding a Sisters and Brothers Picnic for children who had a sibling who was lost
during pregnancy or infancy. This year’s event was to be held on Saturday, June 6, at Dutch Wonderland. When the picnic was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, Cole wanted to re-create a part of the picnic in time for Mother’s Day, which was held on May 10. The chicken barbecue sale takes place on the fairgrounds and has always been operated as a drive-through because there are no facilities to eat on-site during the summer, Welk said. That makes this event ideal for a fundraiser during social distancing. The only significant difference this year is that tickets will not be available for presale. Instead, the food will be sold on a first-come, firstserved basis. Only cash will be accepted as payment. All of the volunteers will wear gloves and masks. For the sale, traffic will enter the fairgrounds from the firehouse entrance on Village Road, then proceed through the fairgrounds, exiting onto Lampeter Road. Lancaster Chef Garners Gold With Regional Team By Ann Mead Ash
Susan Notter of Lancaster, a pastry chef, is one of eight professionals, all from the East Coast of the United States, who participated as a regional team in the Culinary Olympics held in Stuttgart, Germany, from Feb. 14 to 19. The event is an international culinary competition held every four years. The Olympics drew 1,800 chefs from nearly 70 countries. The group with which Notter participated won a gold medal for its display program and placed third overall in the regional team category, taking home a bronze medal. Notter, who has made her home in Lancaster for a decade, has been participating in culinary competitions since 1979. Along the way, she has placed first in prestigious competitions such as the Southern Pastry Classic in Atlanta in 2003. More recently, she earned gold as a member of a U.S. team that competed in the Culinary Olympics in Erfurt, Germany, in 2016. See Chef pg 5

Welk, who had been in charge of the event about 25 years ago, is the interim chair. Myer is helping behind the scenes and sharing his expertise. The proceeds from the chicken barbecues help to maintain the facilities on the fairgrounds and to run the fair in September. It is the only fundraiser for the fair, although the organization garners funds from selling advertisements in the premium books and from food sales during the fair. This year, the earnings will also help to cover the costs of replacing the food pavilion, which the board of directors had planned to tear down and rebuild on

Council Supports FFA Seniors

For young people involved in FFA programs around the commonwealth, one of the high points of the year is the Pennsylvania FFA state convention held annually at Penn State University in early June. Typically, approximately 1,500 FFA members attend the convention, which focuses on career and leadership development events during interactive and hands-on competitions or activities. The in-person state convention has been canceled and will be replaced with a virtual state convention that will be held the week of Monday, June 8. As a sign of its support for seniors who will not have the opportunity to attend an in-person convention this year, the Lancaster County Agriculture Council is providing 2020 FFA state convention T-shirts at no charge for graduating seniors in FFA chapters in Lancaster County that responded to its offer. They include Manheim Central, Pequea Valley, Penn Manor, Solanco, Lampeter-Strasburg, Grassland, Elizabethtown, Lancaster County Career and Technology Center, and Ephrata. Most teachers from the programs came to the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster on May 26 to pick up the shirts for their chapters. Seniors recognized included Elizabethtown students Emma Musser, Julia Neideigh, Jolynn Rosenberry, and Josh Neidig; Ephrata students Maxine Bodnari, Clara Bollinger, Mary Campbell, Genna Ellis, Carsyn Greene, Abigail Kachel, Katelyn Sauder, and Abigail Zorrilla; Grassland FFA
designated as a permanent Sweet Pea Project Remembrance Garden. “It has a big tree and hundreds of flowers, and our logo and sign is there,” said Cole, who noted that she is continually amazed at how the siblings flock to the garden during the picnic. “There’s pizza, ice cream, and roller coasters, and these (siblings) stop in the middle of this super fun day to plant a flower,” she said. “It has been the most meaningful part of our picnic.” To give bereaved mothers and their families an opportunity to join together in a similar and safe way, Sweet Pea created a virtual flower garden. “I thought we should try to create a sense of community and salvage that flower piece,” said Cole, who noted that families do not forget the feeling of losing a child. She added that because of the quarantine, the spring of 2020 may have been even more difficult for those who lost a child. “Parents who (have lost a child) are already feeling isolated, and then they come to Mother’s Day,” explained Cole. “The isolation was really piling up this year.” The virtual flower garden, which can be reached on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtags #stillamothergarden and #sweetpeaproject, acknowledges bereaved mothers and honors the children they love and miss. “We are still

Welk said that whoopie pies are currently planned as the dessert. The West Lampeter Fair is set for Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 23 to 25. Planning for the fair is continuing through phone calls and emails. “As of now, the fair is still a go,” Welk commented. “If things don’t go into the green (shutdown phase), we might have to postpone it. Growing up in Cheshire, England, Notter often created sweet treats for her three younger sisters. “My parents didn’t buy boxed cookies and cakes,” recalled Notter. “When we wanted something sweet to eat, I had to make it.” Notter soon discovered that she enjoyed baking cakes and organizing birthday parties. Following high school, she worked for a year in a hotel before attending culinary school in Leicester, England, where she earned a degree in hospitality management. Knowing she wanted to specialize in pastries, Notter worked evenings and weekends for a small bakery in Melton Mowbray that focused on European-style pastries. At the age of 19, Notter completed culinary school and moved to Germany to work full time in the pastry field. She was employed by a large bakery that distributed products to 10 of its own pastry stores. For more than two years, Notter moved between departments, learning how to make decorative items, layered cakes, and tortes. At the same time, she learned to speak German. “People were friendly and welcoming. It was a wonderful experience,” said Notter. From there, Notter moved to Luzerne, Switzerland, to work in chocolate. She created bonbons, bars, and other confectionary treats for four months on a work visa. In 1983, she transferred to Zurich, where she began taking evening classes to learn to work with sugar. The teacher saw that she had talent, and she became his assistant. “We taught people to work with sugar in a way that was very learnable,” said Notter. The pair began competing and teaching in other countries, eventually relocating to the U.S. in 1992. After working for Albert Uster Imports as corporate pastry chef, Notter took a job in Baltimore and found a house just over the Pennsylvania border in New Freedom around 2008. She worked in a variety of positions, including as director of the pastry arts program for YTI Lancaster. She is now employed as a distribution partner with Max Felchlin AG as a U.S. sales professional. For the Culinary Olympics in Germany, the team was required to create a fivecourse menu, four different finger foods,

Quarryville Fire Company Plans Barbecue Sale By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The Quarryville Fire Company, 217 E. State St., Quarryville, will hold a chicken barbecue sale on Saturday, June 6, from 10 a.m. until supplies run out. Quarryville Fire Company Special Division co-chair Erin Welk said that 1,000 meals will be available. Each meal will contain a half-chicken, applesauce, a roll, chips, a dessert, and a beverage. Chicken will not be sold a la carte. Cash will be the only accepted form of payment, and the process will be a drivethrough designed to be safe and convenient, Welk said. The proceeds will be used to fund
the daily operations of the fire company. The chicken barbecue is a special event for the fire company. “We decided to plan something to help raise some money since the shutdown for the last two months has caused many of our other events to be canceled,” Welk explained. In addition to the Quarryville borough, the fire company serves Eden, Colerain, East Drumore, Providence, Little Britain, and Strasburg townships. been affected by the stay-at-home order. “We are probably about 75 calls below where we normally are this time of year,” Herr reported, offering his theory on the decrease. “It is due to no one really doing too much and being extra cautious,” he suggested. WellSpan, Letterkenny Partner On The Front Lines Of COVID-19 As potential supply shortages became imminent for WellSpan Health because of COVID-19, leaders within the organization took a proactive approach by fostering relationships to secure necessary resources needed to care for communities and staff members. for WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital, watched a local television newscast in early April that highlighted Letterkenny Army Depot’s upholstery shop, which produced around 4,800 cloth masks to protect its own employees. He wondered if a similar effort or collaboration could help protect a portion of WellSpan Health’s 20,000 employees. Massimilla shared the information about Letterkenny’s efforts with WellSpan Health’s performance improvement team, comprising hospital officials and engineers. According to Keith Noll, senior vice president - chief administrative officer for WellSpan Health, the team would later be nicknamed the “MacGyver team” after the star of the television series who uses unconventional problemsolving skills to save lives. The team, led by Debra Ruckert, senior director of performance improvement at WellSpan Health, utilized unconventional designs and paths to production that incorporated local manufacturers and distilleries, which had capabilities of producing anything from hand sanitizer to intubation devices and masks. Members of the hospital’s team visited Letterkenny Army Depot to learn more about its manufacturing capabilities. Typically, the upholstery shop at Letterkenny focuses on production of items such as canvas tents, kitchens and vinyl products.
