Checking In With L-S PAWS Facility Dogs By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Students and faculty members are not the only school personnel to feel the pangs of remote learning. Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) School District’s facility dogs have also had to deal with the change. “This was a huge adjustment for the dogs because you can’t tell them why they can’t go to work anymore,” said L-S school psychologist Kristin Glass. “Some of them appeared a little subdued or even depressed due to not going to school. I think some students can relate to that.” The canine companions have been part of school life since Oct. 24, 2016, when Susquehanna Service Dogs (SSD) Maya started her first shift at LampeterStrasburg High School as part of the L-S PAWS
(Puppies Achieve Wonders for Students) program. Glass noted that SSD Maya started high school with the current senior class. SSD Maya’s acquisition was the result of an effort by the Aevidum club, Glass, and club co-adviser Lisa Boone and funded in part by the Rotary Club Lancaster - South. SSD Maya is owned by special education consultant Gerry Kaufhold, but she has several primary handlers, one of whom is Glass, and multiple secondary handlers. The primary handlers attend training and pass the public access test for service/facility dogs. The secondary handlers attend training, but they work with the dogs only at school. SSD Maya’s first year at the high school went so well that the rest of the district’s schools applied for their own facility dogs. In October 2018, SSD Gabby See L-S PAWS pg 3

Virtual Convoy Scheduled For Aug. 16
“2020 Lancaster County Little Miss Agriculture USA” might be a big name for a young girl, but titleholder Riley LaBow was eager to take it on. Riley was just 7 years old when she applied for the title with the help of her mother, Kaire LaBow. The youngster celebrated her eighth birthday on May 17. Kaire noted that Riley became interested in agriculture, particularly soil cultivation, as a result of the family’s box gardening practice. “Dad (Craig) is enjoying this as well, with the box garden,” Kaire remarked. “He’s been getting (Riley) out there to pull weeds.” The LaBows added chickens to their agricultural ventures at their home in a Landisville development last year. “Raising the chickens last year was awesome,” Kaire remarked. She pointed out that their place of residence was not a drawback in

In April, COVID-19 restrictions put Make-AWish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, an organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening diseases, in a precarious position. Concern for the children served by Make-A-Wish, who fall into high-risk categories, was of the utmost importance. Wishes were postponed, and the popular Mother’s Day Convoy, which was ready to make a move to the Manheim Auto Auction, was postponed. The convoy is now scheduled as a virtual event to be held on Sunday, Aug. 16. See Make-A-Wish pg 2
Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley grants the wishes of children with life-threatening diseases. While COVID-19 restrictions have made that mission difficult, the organization recently held a giving week that raised nearly $100,000 toward making that goal easier.
